I have a new 5721 running ubuntu 12.04 and the fan runs full speed constantly from seconds after loging in. I am using s fraction of the CPUs' power and still the fan runs full belt and is pretty noisy. I have read that Dell computers are certified to run ubuntu, but this seems to be a problem with no solution after hours of searching the web for an answer.

If I boot up my system, the fan is already rotating very fast.
I flashed my BIOS to the newest version (A14) already.
I checked my hardware thru the Dell Diagnostic program and
apparently everything is working functionally.
I recently purchased a Inspiron 5721. The fan comes on about a minute after it boots and never shuts off. Very irritating. I updated the BIOS to A05 but it didn't make any difference.

I get used to it but now it makes noise from the moment I turn it on. I can´t even watch a movie without headphones because of the loud fan.Is there any way to make it stop or decrease the noise?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI put the sims 3 in the computer, it loads to the main screen and the shuts down. It doesn't give any warning and does not restart.  It also doesn't give a reason or notice as to why it shut down. The computer is not over-heating and I only have 1 expansion pack. Extra info: It is an 8GB RAM, intel core i5,  is a 64-bit operating system, and Windows 8.

After installation, when rebooted, it gives error: "The system is running in low graphics mode.
Your screen, graphics card and input device settings could not be detected correctly. You will need to configure these yourself."

I have tried OEM Manufacturer mode.
In all the cases same thing happens. I want to use my computer.
I have an Inspiron 7010 which is 2 years old. In control panel devices it tells me to troubleshoot the laptop and cannot rectify problem with Broadcom virtual wireless adaptor. Secondly running the diagnostics say the Read test is not running. These are the only problems but are not affecting the efficiency of the PC. Should I ignore it?

right now you can hear the fan sound even though i am not doing anything and when i try to open up some folders or software like Steam the scratchy sound ( not loud but annoying) Â came out ( the ones you hear from old computers.
i tried online support but they keep saying i have to call customer care because theres a "pending issue" with my account ...

I've tried to collect all the info I can. Please add as you seem fit.
Recently returned a dell 1745 due to bad fan control. While idling the fan would rew up to max each 3-5 minutes easily detectable by speedfan (see the last link). The core temperatures would slowly ("") increase to around 38 degrees when the fan starts at horrendous pace for ~10-15 seconds and cool the cores to sub-30 degrees and the whole show starts again. This is a showstopper and noone should really by these products.
It is as though the cpu fan only has two paces. Silent and Noisy. There shoudl of course be some kind of gradient in the fan speeds at different temepratures but his has not been implemented though very easy for BIOS coders to do so. The fan vigorously tries to cool the cpu to 30 degrees each time it hits ~40 degress - we're talking intel cpus that could easily go to 60-70 degrees without fuzz.
While idling any laptop should keep a constant temperature - the current lineup of inspirons and studios (at least 1564, 1745, 1747 an 1749) cannot achieve this and unleashes fan hell very often.
Untill fixed (which dell seems very reluctant to) don't buy dell. It's simply not worth it.
This have nothing to do with throtteling. And don't even get me started on doing something "cpu intensive" like browing.

My dell laptop is dell inspiron 14R with preinstalled windows 8.I want to install ubuntu 10.04 side by side. I switch to legacy boot option too.But could not install it through disk since during partition table creation, it is not showing any os that is preinstalled.Its imp for me to install ubuntu.
View 2 Replies View RelatedThe UEFI thing screwed my head a bit while trying to install Ubuntu 12.10 in Dell 7520, I made separate partition in Windows 8, installed Ubuntu via liveUSB it went well, but Ubuntu didn't load. So, I hit the Ubuntu install again, it asked me to erase previous Ubuntu, I said yes, now the Ubuntu 12.10 works perfectly.
I used boot-repair to repair the GRUB as suggested in some answers in askubuntu, and when I reboot, there was no option for windows 8. I booted to Ubuntu to check the Ubuntu have used whole 1 TB (total space). That means I deleted windows ? If so, any way to get the setup back? I don't have repair disk, nor DVD. Win8 came pre-installed.
I use Windows for windows mobile app development and Ubuntu for Normal use.
This is my new laptop, just purchased today, but this secure bios thing screwed all the fun of using multiple OS.
Anyways, how can I get back the Windows 8?

This is my GF's notebook.
The specs are:
CPU- Intel Core 2 Duo 1.5GHz
RAM- 2GB
OS- Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit
HDD- 160GB
It gets almost too hot to touch on the bottom.
Its pretty uncomfortable to use.
So my mom has a 17" Inspiron 1721 from like August 2007. I have been using it off and on for the past year or so, I just today got my Studio XPS 16" 1647 :-)
But anyways, her laptop seems to run a little (burning hot to me). It's not all the time, but all she did was play farmville on Facebook for maybe 2 hours, and it's burning hot to the touch. (Half of the time it was plugged in.
On my xps the fan i running nearly all the time...is this normal. It runs all the time if i turn on the laptop and do nothing on it. Sometimes it stops for 2-4 min. It is quit noisy...... Are you guys xps' doing the same thing???
View 7 Replies View Relatedlately my Inspiron 1720 has been running crazy hot, and overheating (actually shutting down) while playing games (specifically Sacred 2).
For example right now I am only running Firefox and HWMonitor, and here is an excerpt from the HWMonitor report:

In fact shortly after saving that report, my computer actually shut down from heat. I have since restarted it and it is currently running at a roughly constant 52C.
The CPU gets into the 70s and overheats a lot when playing Sacred 2. However, strangely even after closing that game the temperature doesn't come down, such as what happened above .....
I am currently in possession of an Inspiron 9300, which was brought to me so I could try to fix it. The user complained that the computer will lock up and artifacts would appear on the screen. After investigating further, I discovered that the GPU fan never runs. I tried temporarily connecting it to the CPU fan pins, at which point the fan would spin: so it seems that the fan is not physically broken. Moreover, when I connected the GPU fan back to its own pins, I could get it to spin using third-party software: so it seems that it can be told to spin by at least the operating system.
Now, the question is: Why won't it spin on its own, even when the card begins to overheat? I've tried using the latest drivers and BIOS from the Dell website to no avail. I also tried to boot into Ubuntu Linux, and the same thing would occur, which suggests that the problem is more fundamental than the operating system. But what could it be? The sensors seem to accurately report the GPU's temperature. And the GPU, when cooled (using an external fan), seems to run without a problem. So whatever is supposed to tell the GPU fan to start spinning just isn't doing its job.
My ancient Inspiron 1520 laptop with XP works fine but recently the "N" key misses now and then. Do I get that key replaced or is there some way to fix it.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI just bought a latitude E6500 (intel 8600 - 2.4 GH, 3GB RAM, Samsung HDD 200 GB 7200; Vista Business) from an ebay resaler here in UK. From a one day experience I can tell that is is a beautifull machine but it is VERY NOSY all the time no matter what i do - it is like this from the time it gets turned on and stays noisy the whole time.When I put it next to my old Latitude D520 it is almost like a desktop noise. I am not sure if it is only the fan because there's no air flow coming from the radiators neither from the side one nor the vent on the bottom. I thought that there can be somehow that the fan is not working but it turned and blew very hot air for a vew seconds when i updated the BIOS. The noise is mixed with some high friquensy noises coming from where the wents and the proc is. I am confused if it is a hardware issue or it can be fixed somehow ... It comes with a 3 years warranty but i wonder if i should use the 7 day return policy and return it to the seller; which will be pityy because the machine is really beautiful..
View 10 Replies View RelatedIs there any way the DVD drive noise can be reduced? When I put in some DVD/Cds it is so loud I can't even here the sound coming out of the computer. And the all laptop vibrate , I am almost afraid it will damage the drive altogether.
The thiing is, it does not do it for all dvd/ cds. but when it does, it is pratically useless using them. And when I am in a public place it is outright embarassing!
I've been frustrated all week dealing with a new HP dv7t that arrived on Monday (9/15). The moment I powered it up, the fan started running at full speed and hours it hadn't kicked off a single time. I've never heard a notebook fan more audible or more annoying before. It would be impossible to use the system in a library or other quiet setting without distracting others. Even with fan running at gale force, the wrist rest to the left of the touchpad was always uncomfortably HOT! I did figure out how to change the BIOS setting that had the fan set to 'Always On'. But it still ran 90% of the time!
I called this morning and got my Return Authorization, so it's going back on Monday and I refused to trade it for another HP....the fan in a store model I checked out yesterday was just as loud as mine....so that puts me back to square one- looking for a new laptop!
I've decided that I'd rather have a 15.4" model than a 17", so the Dell Studio 15 is high on my list. I also love the XPS M1530, but both of the nVIDIA graphics cards offered are included in the current nVIDIA mess that's been all over the news....
So, the Dell Studio 15 with the ATI Radeon HD 3450 graphics card and either the 2.1GHz T8100 or 2.5GHz T9300 is my front-runner at the moment. But I've got a few questions for those of you with some hands on experience and knowledge of the Studio models-
What percentage of the time does the fan run during normal usage (email, spreadsheets, internet)?
Is the fan noise muted like most other notebooks? Or is it more audible?
Are there any areas of the keyboard, wrist rest or touchpad that become uncomfortably warm to the touch?
I ran Win7's Upgrade Advisor and got a couple flags on Inspiron 9400's hardware. But I've heard that people have nstalled Win7 on them (with mixed results).
A couple reports on graphics malfunctions, and someone said the Sigmatel drivers were not found.
I wouldn't bother, but I have a couple development projects that require Win7.
Wondering if anyone has had good luck with Win7, and whether there are certain things to watch out for. All drivers work OK? Did you install 32-bit or 64-bit?
I totally wiped out my drive and started anew on my 9300. Most of my hardware drivers were accounted for. But, I'm missing sound, wireless, Fn+X keyboard shortcuts, and (most importantly) my ATI X300, which may as well not exist because Windows sure isn't recognizing it.
I haven't been able to get online with it yet, so I'm not sure how many of these problems I can clear up by searching with 7's troubleshooting tools.
Of course, ATI doesn't have official Vista drivers for the X300. Has anyone worked around Dell's OEM drivers, or have those been fine for you?
I really wanted to make it a nice cable/OTA HD Media Center, but I especially need my video card up and running for that.
My computer is out of warranty. On Thursday, my Dell Inspiron 1525 (bought in 2008) running Vista Operating System was working perfectly. No issues at all. On Friday morning, I went to turn on the computer and the 2 blue lights on the bottom left (the power and the one beside it) light up, the computer sounds like it is going to boot and then it beeps once and dies. It will continue to do this over and over every few seconds until I turn off the power manually.
I have tried the trick of taking out the battery and the cord, pressing the power button and then plugging the battery and cord back in, but it still did not work. The computer will not boot using just the cord (and not the battery) and vice versa.Â
I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 running Windows 7. I try to turn on my computer, it goes through the Dell logo screen and comes up to a black screen with a blinking white cursor in the upper left corner and will not go any further. I have pushed F2 and F12 during the Dell logo screen, but no way. I have run the diagnostics for my computer, but it reports no errors, everything passes. I have also tried hitting the F8 and Ctrl+F11 keys during the Dell logo screen, but neither of these do anything, I have the OS disc for reinstallation, but because of the computer not going past the black screen with the white blinking cursor in the upper left corner, I cannot reinstall Windows because it will not restart correctly. What do I do?
View 15 Replies View RelatedI have a month-old dell inspiron 5323 13z running windows 8 that stopped booting yesterday. I had a problem with booting since I got the laptop, namely the boot always stopped and had to press ctr+salt+del to continue the boot process. Dell support recommended the usual things: updating the bios, the OS, resetting the system to factory settings with no effect. Finally, I have decided I can leave this minor annoyance until know when it stopped booting at all after hybernating the system (there was no problem with hybernate before this incident).
So, it displays the dell logo for a short time when powering up, then the screen goes blank but not completely black. After pressing some keys like space a text  'f12 options' is printed in the lower right corner and en empty horizontal bar may appear. Then typing ctrl+alt+del or some random keys the boot may continue and at this point it may be possible to enter the boot menu by pressing f12. So I can change the boot option to uefi or legacy, but neither works. There is no option to boot from USB or anything else (no DVD drive anyway!). So I cannot even try to boot a linux live CD. However, i remember that these options existed before before in the boot order or priority list which is empty now. I can run the pre-boot diagnostics from the boot menu, but it does not find any problem.
I have a Dell Inspiron PP41L when I turn it on I get the power light but nothing else. I can not hear the fan running and it has a black screen. I tried a hard reset, new battery, and charger.
