Dell :: Is The E4300 That Bad Of A Machine
Sep 20, 2008
The Dell E4300 for example is generally inferior (IMO) to the Vaio Z (heavier, slower, uglier, lower quality screen, lower quality build materials, etc.) yet it costs just about the same."
Sony Z here in Canada: $2614 before tax ($45 shipping)
If you make the warranty the same (3 years), $2943 before tax + $45 shipping
Same specs, I paid $2100 before tax (and free shipping) for the Dell E4300. Is it worth the difference when the keyboard (I don't like the Z's keyboard)?
I have to wait the same week (Oct 14/15) to receive either.

While in use, the XPS 12 is usually fairly cool and quiet through normal operation. It spins up if in heavy use of course. This is whether on AC or battery power.
However, if the machine sits there and goes to idle, the fan spins up like crazy and the bottom warms up to. This is for hours and hours at a time - often if I leave the machine at night and come back in the morning this is the case.
I thought it might be some process that starts running when the machine is idle and away, but if I leave Task Manager open there isn't any disk or CPU activity that would indicate that happening.

The power button on my XPS 13 has been slowly becoming less and less responsive when the machine is powered off and has now (After ~a year and a half) reached the point where it will no longer power on at all.
What makes this more confusing is that the button seems to work normally whenever the machine is on.

I got myself a lovely little Precision M4400 on christmas eve. It was downgraded from Vista to XP from Dell. Since I have a specific way of setting up my systems, I spent a week in januray installing the OS from scratch.
Usually this isn't a problem, I have installed my own systems the past 15 years, and things have worked out pretty good so far. But there are some things about the M4400 that I simply don't understand, and I hope there are someone here that can guide me towards a solution.
The specs are: Dell Precision M4400, with 4Gb Ram, a Quadro FX 1700M graphics card, and a Intel WiFi Link 5300 AGN card. I am currently running 32bit Windows XP on it. I think those are the relevant specs for the things I'm fixing.
So, there are three main issues with the machine.
First, I haven't been able to find any official graphics driver for the machine! On the Dell site there are only drivers for Vista. If I select XP as the OS, I only see drivers for a 770M graphics card.
I got a forceware driver from Nvidia installed, but I get a lot of BSOD right now (sometimes from just resizing a Quicktime window!), so I could really need some help on this. That's the most critical issue .....

I have XP on my macbook pro via bootcamp/vmware. I tried putting 7 on it, but then XP stopped working. So I deleted the partition that 7 was installed on and XP worked again.
Is there a way I can have both XP and 7 working via bootcamp? As far as I know I can't, so I was thinking about running 7 with bootcamp and XP via vmware. Also ever since deleting the partition that 7 was installed on XP doesn't seem to be able to boot via vmware. It was says I have to remove the physical disk from the virtual machine then add it again. How do I do this?

Despite installing the Texas Instruments PCI8412 Memory Card / 1394 Controller on my M6500, the machine does not seem to recognize any memory card that I put into the drive. The driver states its installed fine and despite several attempts at re-installation, I don’t seem to be able to get it working.Â

I chose a Dell Inspiron and believe the model is 15R although I can't be sure as I cannot remember exactly which one I chose to begin with and just checked my Dell boxes and all I saw was 'P17F', so I don't know if that's the model haha! But anyway..
Ever since I got my laptop to begin with there was the occasional time where it would switch off randomly. At first I found no reason for it and thought it might just be me and that I need to be a little more careful with it. Then it became more frequent and I noticed that it's when I move my laptop. I had it on my lap one day, I pulled my laptop a little closer to me as I was reading, and it shut down. I turned it on again and all was fine but now, 15 months on it's becoming a daily problem. I have checked the bottom of my laptop and see nothing that could be causing it. It is at the point now where small things such as tilting the screen back (and my laptop moves), setting my laptop on a cushion even the tiniest movements can cause it to switch off.
Just a minute a go, I put my sofa recliner up and it shut down as it was resting on my lap. I turned it on again, moved my leg slightly and it went again. I put it on a cushion because sometimes that works, it shut down again. I moved my laptop slightly to position it on the cushion better, went AGAIN. Then I tilted the screen back ever so slightly, it went again. I'm wondering if it's just the battery, as my battery only lasts for two hours unplugged when at first it lasted for five, then went down to three, and now two.

I am considering the P8700 2.53, T9550 2.66, and the T9800 2.93. I know the T series requires more power to run thus causing more heat to be generated. but for anyone who has any of these processors, does the computer actually get hot to the point where it affects the computer or your hands?

I just accepted an offer on my MBP and I'll be purchasing a new unibody MBP in the following week.
I have a lot of personal data and applications that are backed up right now in the form of a Time Machine backup.
The old MBP is a SR (sig below) and the new one will be the unibody; different specs, GPU, HD etc...
Can I just plug in my external HD that has my Time Machine backup into the new machine and restore it? Would the fact that there are different hardware complicate matters? And if so, since I still have my old machine for now, what would be the best solution to do what I'm trying to do here?

I have a dell Inspiron 15r 3537 i7 model with windows 8. I bought it 4 months ago. I was playing a game on it and it suddenly hanged. I waited for 5-10 minutes and tried to close the game but it wasn't closing and it was hung. I waited for atleast 15 minutes and I had no choice so I switched it off from the power button thinking that it will turn on normally. But when I switched it on it showed the dell logo and then it said

I've recently offered to help out a friend who's Acer aspire has stopped working.
It won't book into windows, but she is keen to keep her old files.
I installed a 2nd version of windows onto the machine to basically back up the whole disk using acronis true image. I've now got that image storage remotley on my own machine.
I think she bought the computer 2nd hand and never got a burned copy of the recovery disks and for some reason the Alt-F10 thing doesn't work to get into the recovery stuff (I've checked in the Bios for D2D)
I've managed to make the PQService partition visible and was wondering what was the best way to restore the machine to factory defaults. I created a CD from the STCDBOOT.ISO file, which allows me to book into the recovery manager, but all it does is prompts for the first disk/system disk.
I'm guessing that all the data required is held in the PQService partition, but I'm not sure how to create the backup DVD's that should have been done when the machine was first used.
I would image that the data is held in the 92EPIXIE.nnn files in the D2D/images directory of the PQService.

I have two laptops. One is a macbook and the other is a Toshiba that has Vista. The Toshiba works pretty well, but I want to be able to back it up like I can with the mac and time machine.
Is there any Windows software out there that can come close? I know there is backup software that comes with some external hard drives, but I think they just save your files and not your settings.

I upgraded to Windows 7 today on my Fusion Virtual Machine on my Macbook today. I preceded it with a Time Machine backup, and it copied a few gigabytes, which I expected since I installed CS4 the other day.
Two hours later...
I installed the Windows 7 upgrade, and then did another Time Machine backup. This time it copied 36 gigabytes (the amount of my virtual machine file).
This got me thinking... Does Time Machine backup the entire virtual machine file each time there is a slight change? If so, then merely launching Windows in Fusion would be enough for Time Machine to backup the virtual machine file, using almost 40 gig on my backup drive most every time I launch time machine backup, even though the change is minor (a few bytes)
The consequence is that for a Fusion user, the backup device is going to fill awfully fast because of the relatively minor changes to the VM file, thus making for paltry space for history on all the Mac files.
I figure that a 320 Gig backup device is effectively extremely tiny for a 250 Gig HDD with only 90 Gig of files. My backup drive is already full after only ~8 backup sessions, hence deleting old history, which is hardly a few months old!

I noticed that there were new updates so I went ahead and installed them. On restart, the gray screen came up and just sat there. I shut down and started up a few times and same thing. I restarted and held the option key down and it gave me the OS menu and I'm able to boot Mac OSX from there.
I'm going to try to set the default OS using Boot Camp to see if that fixes the problem.

Just started TM backups on a new 1TB drive today....
It did 30GB in 2 & half hours! A little slow...
Why does it go soooo slow? Supposed to be faster in SL.... don't think so....
Went for Carbon Copy Cloner..... much better.... currently 27GB in 23 mins.... thats more like it.
That'll be my weekend moan out of the way I guess...

I broke my XPS M1330 at work and one of the laptops the computer dept is suggesting as a replacement is the Dell E4300.
I played around with one that my colleague has. The size of 4lbs is okay, the performance seems okay for my usage pattern. However, there's a major show-stopper: the screen. I'm none too impressed by the screen, in terms of contrast and black levels. This review confirmed my impression:
Notebookcheck: Review Dell Latitude E4300 Laptop ). And it seems this laptop does not offer any screen upgrade option.
Also resolution was okay, but I wouldnt mind a bit more, although that is not a deal breaker like the other two issues.
So is there any Latitude or corporate Dell unit that would basically be an E4300 with a better screen?

Windows 7 runs amazingly on this machine (specs in sig). Though, it ran fantastic with Vista as well.
Despite my overall good experience thus far, there are a few things to note:
1) The webcam. Yeah, it works fine with AIM and what not out of the box, but I'd like it if Dell released an official Win7 driver + Win7 Webcam Central to better support the Latitudes.
2) The Ambient Light Sensor. It's a bit wonky under Win7, so I've left it disabled for the time being and manually change the brightness when needed. Again, I'd like to see Dell release a Win7 version of the ALS Utility found under their Vista drivers.

I'm in the process of trying to decide between getting an E6400 or E4300 to replace my aging Toshiba A105-4074. I'm somewhat surprised by the lack of discussion here about the E4300 compared with the huge number of threads about the E6400.
I have an E4300 here at work that I have been impressed with, so I have hands-on experience with it. I haven't had any hands-on experience with the E6400, and have only seen one briefly. While I've read lots of good things about it, I wish I could use one for a couple of days in order to get a feel for it .....
