Whats your opinion on the case design? Im looking to purchase and looking at the case it looks kind of frimpy and ugly, and that ripple effect on the outside seems very cheesy!
But i've been fooled many times by pictures online vs. the look of something in person.
By contrast, the 6400 series look like they have beautifully elegant case designs with aluminum look to them.
I'm a proud new owner of a MBP 13-inch. couple of matters.
(1) A good skin/sleeve/cover/case to protect it on the go. Ideally I'd like a very lightweight and elegant skin or shell that's on all the time to protect the exterior from wear and tear, without trapping too much heat.
(2) I need a sleek padded case to carry the unit and typical accessories (charger, adapters, mouse) and other small items.
(3) I'm looking for a convenient laptop stand for my desk to set the MBP alongside an external monitor.
I'm considering buying a Studio XPS 16. What do you guys think of it appearance-wise? The back (lid) looks sweet, but looking at the front, the metal part with screws on the sides of the display looks like it could be a bit distracting.

have been sold units that under perform even the slowest of Walmart brand laptops!!!
Hold on, bare with me. No it's fine in games, as the CPU usage is hardly ever at above 80 usage for more then 2-3 minutes, and fluctuates up and down.
However, should you try to run a dual core test! Something that loads both your cores up at 90%+ like Sony Vegas, DIVx Converter....anything that will require more then 5minutes of processing time. The dell XPS case, along with it's worthless heat pipe cooling solution is not sufficient enough to cool the processor. I have taken off all overclocks in my sig, have had dell replace all my fans and heat syncs and NOTHING!!! Still the same result.
Putting both cores at high load, for more then 4 minutes, ie encoding a video, etc. will through the CPU into throttling mode!!! As if that wasn't enough, dell decided to write it's bios, that when that occurs at 93C, the voltage supplied to the CPU remains constant!!! Regardless of the clock!
As such, if you continue the work flow...(anything stressing the cores for more then 4-5min) you will see the processor throttle down to as lot as 1000Mhz!! effectively turning a 70+ fps video conversion into 20fps. I couldn't believe that this was happening but it does!!
Use CPUz to watch your clocks, along with Intel's thermal analysis tool, that you can find here http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/20...etemp-speedfan to test your rigs.
I have called dell, and they basically, after 2 and a half hours of me demonstrating the issue to them over and over with different programs and methods, have told me that it's not a dell problem and that it's an intel problem, and that throttling at 93C is a processor issue.
I asked to see that maybe there is something wrong with my unit, but they said run the tests, and of course, the test come out that everythign is positive.
The idiot on the phone, even had the nerve to tell me, that the "event log" in windows would display any overheating issues!!! HOW?
I'm realy pissed at Dell and am venting a bit, but originally, I though that my CPU went that hot, because I had it overclocked, but it turns out, that it does it regardless and even at the stock 2.33GHz!!!
Please run some test on your systems. This is unacceptable. I can get more work done on my crappy wallmart brand POS, then on the Dell.
Please also check this link for another user experiencing the same issues, as well at even stock clock speeds on the 7600G!!!!

I am very dissapointed when I see the Studio 1555's keyboard does not include Numpad, Sleep Stop Numlock buttons, Device status lights. It is not easy to press F1-F12 as it require user to hold fn key first.
I use F1-F12 frequent than the External display, Wireless switch, battery and the Display and keyboard backlit brightness keys, so I really don't like the F1-F12 in Studio 1555.
And the Display and keyboard backlit brightness keys are wasting 3 spaces for Sleep, Stop and Numlock buttons.
I was just wondering what the community thinks of design of the new Dell Adamo.

What are some good applications for webdesign/maintenance. Anything of that type.
Basically I will be running a website, I have the domain, I have a host, I have a Mac, now I just need to make it and maintain it.
I feel E6400 w/ Nvidia has big design flaw w/ Heat! I had hopes Bios A15 would fix some of it.
Even though I used RMClock to reduce the voltage (it did drop 5-7C), the left side vent of the laptop blows VERY hot air out ALL THE TIME!! My graphic cards on a fresh boot starts at 58C and goes up to 68-70C w/ normal web usage (not even games).
By using Antec Cooler (No choice otherwise, which makes enough fan noise & feels much heavier) + laptop fans noise.. it feels like a desktop, rather than sleek and quiet notebook. Becuase of this fans noise + Heat I don't tend to use my laptop much often. My Dell XPS 720 desktop is much quieter to use. I felt previous D620/D630 were much better when controlling the heat.
Im currently using an Acer Aspire 5920G. Im in the market for a new Laptop since the 5920Gs battery is terrible (lasts about 1.5 hours) and so I found this:

My only problem is that I feel the CPU is too slow to run programs like Dreamweaver CS4 and Photoshop CS4 adequately. My 5920G has a Dual Core 2.0Ghz Intel CPY where as this 4810 has a SU4100 at 1.3Ghz. I cant find any benchmarks for the SU4100 either which doesn't help............
Sony come out with a UNIBODY design? It's the most durable laptop design out there...it just can't be beat as far as durability and toughness go.
View 10 Replies View RelatedThe aluminum unibody design has been here for a while. With probably the most significant running change being the closing up of the battery compartment so that user change-over is limited to a surgical, versus an on-the-fly service issue.
Do you think that this design is here to stay for awhile in the MackBook (pros), the next couple of updates anyway?
Or do you think it is just a trend that will yield to some other trend to catch the fancy of fickle consumer whims for something new, for newness sake? (back to lightweight plastic, perhaps). I'm sure the apple marketing machine can spin polycarbonate another life as a "space-age miracle of modern science", or some-such blather. The base MacBook notwithstanding, of course.
Just purchased new Dell Inspiron 15 (3521). Wireless will only connect at 72Mbps. After some googling found this is by design. The adapter is the Dell Wireless 1703 Adapter. Can Dell pls confirm this is the case and that there is no way to achieve TRUE wireless N speeds ? The fact that this limitation is not advertised on any product material/brochure/sales rep is a concern. Would Dell replace the adapter with one capable of proper wireless N speeds free of charge ?

Now I haven't used my notebook on battery very often but judging by reviews and battery use here and there I do believe HP could've done better with designing their battery. I mean they can achieve up to 24 hrs with an elitebook (given its like a battery slice plus sticks out in the back) but don't even get close to a proper battery usage time with the standard battery. I've read reviews where the battery runs about 2hrs on battery and even some around just an hour, and that really is sad. I know the MacBook Pro was able to get about 7-8 hours out of a thin-n-light(given crappy hardware) so I know hp has the resources and capability to make this new battery. At least bring it out by the time the next gen Envys will come out and make sure these batteries will be backwards compatible with older Envys as well. Besides the battery life and locked multiplier I love my Envy
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm considering a Macbook Pro 15" or 17" for University. I'm studying Computer Games Design for 3 years, this includes Graphic Intensive work on Photoshop, Maya, 3DS Max and Importing models into Unreal Engine for level creation etc.
Do you think a Macbook Pro would be suitable for these tasks? Otherwise I'm going straight with a PC Laptop, as well over the majority of games are made on PC platforms. I was just interested in the MBP for the Battery life, OS X and all the little quality features it has.
Also would just like to know, how is the battery life on the MBP whilst running in Windows 7?
I'm looking for a stand for my MBP. mStand by Rain Design caught my eye as it is (in my opinion) a good looking stand. However, I was wondering if it is worth the money or if there is a better stand for a cheaper that would do just as well.
View 10 Replies View RelatedI am one of the many people here who has a defective Studio XPS 1645 (random crashing and throttling issues). I was promissed a replacement system by a tech support supervisor and Studio XPS 1647 was mentioned by him as a replacement for the 1645 system which will fix all outstanding issues (as claimed by him). I don't have a detailed system configuration yet and will post as soon as I recieve one.
I just don't want to be a beta tester for Dell once again if 1647 proves to have design flaws like the 1645.
Does anyone out there have 1647 yet? Is this an upgrade to 1645 (hope its not a downgrade)? Should I accept this offer or demand a full refund?
I own the Metal Mosaic (lower-end) Signature Series model. This is to report my negative findings - none of which are anything close to show-stoppers in my book.
Here is the list I have so far:Plastic palmrest creaks ever so slightly when I rest the weight of my arm on itThe front microphone and head phone jacks have a design flaw. With the extended battery installed (which increases the tilt) the headphone jack that came with the laptop just BARELY clears the surface of the desk. Essentially the jack itself is parallel to the plane of the keyboard; this means that the line that the jack port makes intersects with the desk just in front of the laptop. This wouldn't be an issue if the jack was on the side like on the previous Z generation, but with this design, certain (many?) headphone plugs might not be connectable. What Sony should have done would have been to have the front jack have a slight "upward" tilt to counter the tilt of the laptop, resulting in the headphone jack making a parallel - or at least MORE parallel line with the desk.They keyboard brightness varies across the keyboard, especially on the right-most side. For example, the arrow of the "Backspace" key is bright, but the the "ace" is dim. This is true down the entire right edge of the keyboard.The front-most USB ports on both the left and right sides just barely allow for "comfortable" insertion of the USB cable. MAYbe it's because I'm using the extended battery; maybe not though. As it is, I find myself having to position my fingers higher on the cable plug than I normally would, making it harder to find the port without looking. The thicker your fingers (mine are skinny), the more I imagine this would be an issue.The light sensor can make the backlight of the display flicker from passing shadows. In the artificial light of an office, that's not a problem, unless you have a window seat near a window on a partly cloudy day. Sometimes as little as you leaning forward and your head casting a shadow on the sensor is all it takes.

My XP finally gave up and so have a brand new Acer Aspire E5 with 8.1 which is a beautiful machine and love lots of the features but if I can't figure out how to open a downloaded embroidery design with the Bernina Artlink 7 software (download free from Bernina) I have no use for it at all. This should be a very simple task and has turned into a nightmare of support calls with no one understanding that all I need is to be able to tell the computer what program I want to use for opening the embroidery design.

And please, don't tell me that just buy the aluminum model for the extra $200, my question is strictly from an engineering point of view: heat. We all know aluminum Macbooks are quite hot, right? But how does the white unibody compares to the aluminum regarding heat issues?
2.What might be the reason that the whole bottom of the white unibody contcts the table beneath it, compared to the aluminum model, which has four rubber contact points on the four corners?
3.On the other thread I read a dedicated graphics card does not really add to battery consumption. Can you confirm that?
My main usage profile is office, web and seeing (HD, if available) Youtube videos. This one is rather a 15" vs. 13" Pro question, and half hypothetic. Let's say, all things are being equal on two models, the processor none the least, the only differences are one model has the integrated Nvidia, the other the integrated Intel plus discreet Nvidia combo, which one would serve me better, regarding performance and battery life? The discreet graphics would at least turn on when playing the HD videos?
4.Running native Windows (7 or XP) still suck on Macbooks, because of the drivers?
The build quality on my Studio 1535 is really, astonishingly poor. All cheap plastic and case creaks and noises. Very flimsy, even for a budget laptop.
My question is this- Would it be possible to purchase another case- a better case, perhaps and XPS or something similar,
and move the internals from the Studio to the new case? Or would that just be a logistcal nightmare not even worth attempting?
Has anyone here done an XPS m1530 case mod? I'd like to take off the front panel of my 1530 and do a custom paint job on it, but from the few sites where I've seen instructions for disassembling the 1530 it seems like a huge hassle.
If I weren't using spray paint, I suppose I wouldn't need to take it apart. But I'm new to case modding, and I haven't seen any mods done with anything other than spray paint.
What type/brand of case is everyone using to tote around their E4300. I just got mine in yesterday and I need something to protect her!

I didnt think the Studio XPS 16 would fit but its an actual PERFECT fit.
it's the best case on the market in my opinion. And it retails for $99.00 but I got it through amazon for $55.00 brand new. It's awesome!
I'm putting this in this forum because of the difficulty many have had finding a good case for the SXPS 16..
But I figured more SXPS 16 users would see this here .....
