Dell :: On The Fence For A Sxps 1340!
Oct 25, 2009
I have been waiting around for the release of all these new notebooks but I find that this is more within my price range while having solid specs.
I would plan on this build:P8800 (2.66ghz)4gb ddr3500gb hdd (maybe 128 ssd)210m gs
For you owners out there:
Are still any problems with heat or anything after the bios update? What battery life should I expect with the 6 cell? or the 9 cell?Is the P9600 worth the extra $150?Does the leather accent wear easily?
Am I better off with just standard glossy?Any other concerns? or reasons I should or should not get this?

In the process of trying different nVidia GPU drivers I inadvertently uninstalled a bunch of other nVidia drivers from my SXPS 1340 . Managed to reinstall most of them, but I keep on getting an error looking for drivers for the SM Bus controller. Now all the advice on t'internet is that this is part of the chipset drivers, which I have reinstalled a number of times- all the other devices are fine now, but the SM Bus controller is still flagged up in the device manager.

I've had my laptop since June and have not been impressed with the graphics performance of the Hybrid SLI setup.
I installed nHancer for the first time and started tinkering around with stuff and noticed that some of the games I was disappointed in weren't utilizing both GPUs by enabling the SLI Load Balancing Graph (Vsync has to be disabled for this to work).
Upon further tinkering I noticed that for both GPUs to be used, the game profiles had to be modified with "Hybrid SLI mode" set to "1". Thought I'd share this information so everyone can try and get the most out of their computer.

Does anyone's screen dim itself every now and then? I don't know if it's a defect in the screen or maybe a bug in Quickset or something else, but occasionally my screen just dims a few levels.
Quickset shows it still maxed out and lowering it a notch and raising it back up using the keyboard shortcuts makes it go back to normal.

If the information below is true, then why does Dell offer 6&8 G memory upgrades in the configurations? (Main points highlighted in color)
Memory
Connectors two internallyaccessible
SO-DIMM
sockets
Capacities 512 MB, 1 GB, and
2 GB
Memory type 1066 MHz DDR3
SO-DIMM
Memory
configuration
possible
1 GB, 1.5 GB, 2 GB,
3 GB, and 4 GB
Just wondering, as I have been "window shopping" today. So far, it looks like Dell's upgrades are actually cheaper than DIY kits. I guess you could subtract whatever you could sell your stock memory for.
To anyone who has actually opened theirs: Does it really only have two slots? 3x2 Gb kits are around 100-150 USD, depending on where you look. Would be too convenient to have empty slots to stick extra 2 G modules into...

I am really curious if any other 1340/1640 users have run into a similar situation.
The problem:
when typing on the lappy, sometimes the text jumps to wherever the I beak of the cursor is. At first i thought i was accidentally touching the touchpad with the base of my thumb, but now i'm sure thats not the case
I've already tried uninstalling dells drivers, using the drivers from synaptics website, changing the sensitivity of the touch pad, using the touchpad with no drivers at all (windows drivers only)...

HSPA+ MC8700 PCI Express Mini Card
Works fine in my sxps 1340's wwan slot btw.. drivers are just latest version of sierra watcher software.
recent speedtest using Telus HSPA+ , this was in my office in downtown edmonton earlier this evening;
ping: 28ms download: 12.83Mb/s upload: 2.76Mb/s
excellent speeds for internet on-the-go
I chose this card because it is capable of full HSPA+ speeds (Peak downlink speeds up to 21 Mbps and peak uplink speeds up to 5.76 Mbps) .. Dell's current WWAN cards are just not fast enough, lol

Replacing Dell's default thermal paste in the Dell Studio XPS 1340 can lower your cpu, gpu and ambient temperatures by as much as 15C/60F.
When I first received my SXPS 1340 from Dell, my temperatures were:
THRM-57C, CPU-52C, GPU-62C.
For me, these temperatures were O.K., but I knew I could lower them by replacing the thermal paste.
My temperatures after replacing the thermal paste were:
THRM-48C, CPU-34C, GPU-50C. Note that after a month or two of having the MX-2 inside your computer, the cooler it will become as it settles

I have an SXPS 1340 running Windows 7 Ultimate. I have tried to connect a Western Digital My Book Home external HD through the esata port but i can't get the computer to recognise it. Has anyone else successfully connected this model HD to the 1340 through esata? To those of you who have successfully connected a different external HD through the esata port what brand and model of external HD are you using?

I am trying to decide between the M4500 and the E6510.
I am a photographer and will be using this computer for photoshop work in the field and hooked up to a 26in monitor at home.
I want something that will last a few years, so I am considering the M4500 as future proofing, because you can get a faster video card and CPU with it.

This is interesting... a friend of mine just tried to order the SXPS with the i7-820 processor and got denied by Dell. Apparently, the 1645 has been fully discontinued, and Dell will no longer be placing the i7-820 processor in any SXPS form factor. They quoted that due to hardware and power issues as the reason behind discontinuing the 1645 (and replacing it with the 1647) and killing i7-820 support. The sales rep said the only offering will be the Studio series for the i7-820.
As a 1645 owner with the i7-820, this is kinda scary that this laptop has been discontinued this quickly as well as the offering of the 820 series chip. We ended up calling a second time, and another sales rep confirmed the same story.
Anyone get similar information from Dell on this? I'm also wondering if this is a "Dell Canada" thing...

I configured a SXPS 1340 for $1334 with LED and 9500M. THe BB XPS1340 is similar but with a CCFL and 9400M for $900. Is it worth the $434 difference?
How bad is the heating issue with the 1340?

I just ordered a XPS 1340 fully loaded P9600/LED/4GB/Nvidia 256/256GB SSD/BT option.
I used my Dell credit card (logon to Dell.com/DPA5PERCENT)(evalue code 6M278-DYPDFP1)to get 5% plus a $150 gift card.
I started with a chat then they called me. After humming and hawing the rep was unable to to a better deal than my saved cart. I said thanks anyway but its out of my budget.

I just bought this new laptop and it froze on me during inital set up and dell had to reimage it on the phone with me. Now that I have it where I can use the machine after about an hour of web surfing it seems like the bottom is pretty hot and near the vent is so hot you could not hold your hand there. I was thinking of calling dell back and talking to them about it. Are other people experiencing a lot of heat with this computer?

I have an XPS 1340 on order, with the g210m graphics card. I have been reading about this computer, and while performance seems good,
I am starting to freak out a little bit about the heat issues people are reporting, even recently and with the new g201m.
I owned a laptop once with heat issues, and I don't want to go back to the bad old days of lockups and crashes related to heat.
I am thinking of canceling my order (or returning it if I can't), and getting the Vaio SR with the HD4570 graphics card.
What do people think of this as an alternative?
I lose the backlit keyboard and small amount of potential graphics performance, but also lose heat issues, fan noise, and potential problems related to the SLI configuration.

I think I have decided to purchase a Dell Studio XPS 1340, as I require a new laptop before the end of June and I'm not sure anything better in this class will be available before then.
I will be using it for a bit of everything, including work, portability, hooking it up for presentations, general surfing on the couch and some minor game playing. I have a few questions about purchasing it.
1. CPU. At the moment both the P9500 (2.53GHz) and the P9600 (2.66GHz) cost an extra $388.30. Shouldn't the P9600 cost more than the P9500? Am I missing something here?
2. Screen. I get a lot of glare on my current laptop at work. Does the XPS 1340 have a glossy or matte screen? Does choosing WLED or CCFL have any effect on this?
3. Deals. There is currently a $150 cash off deal which ends tomorrow (Thursday). This seems like a pretty good deal to me.
Should I take this or is there a high likelihood a better deal will be available soon? I will also be using the EPP code as I'm a full-time student.
Are there any other coupons I could use? In addition to being a full-time student, I am also a small business owner (strange combo I know), and have bought Dell desktops for employees in the past. Would I be able to get a better deal going through a small business sales channel .....

I'm really debating on which laptop to get, since I've heard a fair share of both good/bad reviews from both models.
I'm not really a heavy gamer, just a little Counter-Strike 1.6 and WarCraft III.
I was looking for portability with the 1340, but the aspect of full 1080p on the 1640 keeps pulling me back!
I'm just worried that the 1640 will be too big for me to be considered "portable" and more of a desktop replacement. .

I have read threads about Skype and windows 7, Skype and Dell XPS 1640and IDT codec sound drivers having issues.
I have an XPS 1340 with IDT for sound software, I have had my machine running good for about a month now, after I did a complete system restore 3 times.
So, I was wondering can anyone recommend a Skype version that is pretty friendly with the XPS 1340. or can I use the IDT drivers for the 1640 that I read about working with Skype

Anyway Im running it with the A07 bios and all new drivers from dell's website.
When Im running it on heavy load like a game the 9400 GPU reaches to 86c.
The 9200 is around 75c. CPU is 74c max .....
