Dell :: M4500 Vs E6510: On The Fence

May 15, 2010

I am trying to decide between the M4500 and the E6510.

I am a photographer and will be using this computer for photoshop work in the field and hooked up to a 26in monitor at home.

I want something that will last a few years, so I am considering the M4500 as future proofing, because you can get a faster video card and CPU with it.

Dell :: Latitude E6510 Vs. Precision M4500: Is It Just The Video Card Again?

Apr 6, 2010

Latitude E6500 and Precision M4400 were basically the same machine, the differences being the M4400's (obviously) different aesthetic on the lid, the more powerful GPU options, and a handful of other tweaks that I don't really remember the specifics of.

From what I can tell, the situation looks to be about the same this time around with the 15.6" Latitude E6510 vs. the 15.6" Precision M4500.

The Precision offers beefier GPU options and a 1600x900 sRGB LED display option, but I want the lower-power WLED 1080p display anyway so that's no loss

Dell :: On The Fence For A Sxps 1340!

Oct 25, 2009

I have been waiting around for the release of all these new notebooks but I find that this is more within my price range while having solid specs.

I would plan on this build:P8800 (2.66ghz)4gb ddr3500gb hdd (maybe 128 ssd)210m gs

For you owners out there:
Are still any problems with heat or anything after the bios update? What battery life should I expect with the 6 cell? or the 9 cell?Is the P9600 worth the extra $150?Does the leather accent wear easily?

Am I better off with just standard glossy?Any other concerns? or reasons I should or should not get this?

Dell :: M4500 Vs M6500

Apr 19, 2010

I am in the process of specing a new laptop for engineering work. I will do a little bit of CAD, but mainly processor intensive mathematical simulations in Java, Matlab, or Scilab.

I am considering purchasing either the m4500 or m6500. I don't think I will mind lugging around the m6500. The positive attributes, as I see them, of the two machines are shown below.

Other than that they seem like they are on par, though I can't help but think the m6500 will be able to better handle the cooling requirements of their components than the m4500. What does everyone think? Is it even fair to compare the two?

m6500 pro's:
Graphics power (I would get ATI graphics)
1600 mhz memory supported
4 RAM slots
USB 3.o .....

Dell Precision M4500 :: Not Booting Into Win7

Jul 11, 2013

I have a Dell Precision M4500, I recently changed out the HDD as the one in the machine was getting full.

Since doing this I have ran into no end of problems, first of all, upon installing WIn7 onto the new HDD where I had to change some bios settings, no problem really. Then when installing drivers it would ask for a restart and upon the restart it would get caught in a loop. I would reinstall Win7 again and then go through a few drivers and when it needed to be restarted same problem.

Now there is another problem, I cant boot into windows at all, it come back with this error:

Boot Manager:Windows failed to start. A recent hardware of software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:1.Insert your Windows installation disc and restart the computer.2.Choose your language settings, and then click "Next".3.Click "Repair your computer."If you do not have this disc, contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for assistance.Status: 0xc000000fInfo: The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible.

I have the Dell Win7 64bit repair CD in the disk drive and it is reading that it is there,

When I run the start up repair and the Dell diagnostic tool both report back that there is no error....

Dell Precision M4500 :: Cannot Update BIOS Past Version 07

Jan 11, 2015

What is going on with updating the Bios with Dell laptops? I have a Dell M4500 precision laptop. I'm running Windows 7 pro 64 bit an I7 quad processor and 8 gigs of memory. I can't update the bios past V 07. When I looked through the support  posts I found people asking the same question and when I did a search I found over 300.000 hits for the same problem many Dell laptops.  What I have NOT found is Dell addressing the problem.  Is it the update engine it's self or a problem with the computers?  I installed all the patches and all the updates for my computer except the Bios.

Dell :: E6510 Vs. E6410 I5 Vs. I7 Hdd Vs 's Ssd Vs. After Market Ssd?

Apr 19, 2010

I am in the market for a new computer and have been doing a lot of research into my options. First off i found this website to be the best source of information so i figured it was about time to register. I'm just finishing up my Business Degree and then will be doing another two years of education in Crop Science i plan on continuing to work for the Family Business(Agriculture Retail). I currently have a Dell Inspiron 640m Due Core 2GB Ram Windows XP Pro with 9 cell. This has been a great laptop for me and lasted over years now of pretty continual use. It is starting to fall apart though and i'm in the market for a new laptop this spring. Our company has generally ordered from Dell and for the most part results have been pretty good however they sure haven't been perfect.

I take my laptop everywhere i go so i'm hoping my next laptop be a little slimmer then my current model and ideally a little lighter. I'm also wanting my next computer to be better at multitasking and these new intel chips look like they will fit the bill nicely. I always have outlook open and often many chrome or firefox tabs as well as itunes, word, excell ect. I don't do much for PC gaming i have a PS3 for that, however it would be nice to be able to at least have the ability to play some more basic PC games if needed (I'm thinking of going with the discrete video card). I dont watch a lot of movies on my computer but i am considering getting a blueray drive depending on if i can negotiate the $500 price down a bit. I want to have a computer with good battery life i've noticed some of the average 15/16inch futureshop/best buy models only last a couple hours on battery and thats not acceptable to me. At home i currently hook up to a nice hd 23inch dell monitor. I really like the latitudes ability to dock and would likely get one dock for home and one for work.

I would say my leading model of choice would be the e6410 right now. I'm used to the 14 inch screen and it would have the same resolution as what i have now. However the full hd resolution on the e6510 does sound really nice and i'm hoping to try to find a local kiosk store to see one in person. I just don't know if the extra real estate is worth the extra weight size and i assume less battery life. How much of a battery life difference between the 15 and 14 inch models? Even from the older 5100 vs 4100 series anyone compared? The Dell reps claim they are similar but i don't believe it. I'v been watching the Owners Lounge on both models and still waiting for some true weights to be posts as i don't believe Dell's Claimed weights. I also was looking at the Lunova T series and the new MacBook Pro 15inch. The Macs are very nice and i enjoy working with my Parents MacBook Pro 13inch every once and while. The visual performance of their iworks programs are Superior in my opinion however in order to be integrated well into work i need to be able to use Outlook and essentially i feel i would need to use Bootcamp or parallels to run Windows. If i end up using mainly windows i guess it doesn't make much sense to buy a mac. I'm also hoping office 2010 will be an upgrade on 2007.

As far as the new processors at first i figured that it would be nice to get the true quad core i7 processors in the e6510 however after doing some research on the forms i don't think i have any need for a quad core and i believe that i would get more value out of the lower energy consumption of the dual core series. So essentially i think its just a debate between the i5 540 and in the i7 640. I found a link somewhere on here with a test comparing the two and essentially it recommended sticking with the i5 540 because it has very close performance with constantly lower energy consumption. However i'v also read some of the new macbook pro 15 reviews and some of the reviews saw some significant improvements of the i7 vs i5 options. Whats your thoughts anyone have real life experience comparing the two, or more links for me to look at?

I'm heavily considering get an SSD drive on my next laptop i know they are a little pricey but from everything i'v read they are one of the most noticeable speed improvements you can make. I also like the extra reliability of no moving parts. This seems to be a quickly changing field with new options such as "Trim" support. I know this is only available on Windows 7 and i am planning on going with Windows 7 Pro unless someone thinks that Ultimate is worth the extra money. I don't really see any extra features of importance in the ultimate version though. But back to the SSD what is the exact model that Dell uses i'v read that it is a Samsung model but can't seem to find much for reviews on any Dell/Samsung SSD's. If i'm going to spend the money on an SSD it sounds like going with an aftermarket SSD such as the Intel SSD may be the way to go. The 160 Intel looks like a nice option it seems like the Intel has been getting strong reviews from everything that i have read. My question is will this void warranty with dell? I plan on getting the 3 year warranty with pro support and accidental coverage. Also has anyone compared the Dell SSD to an aftermarket one? How hard is it to switch the hard drive with an after market one? Could someone explain the drive size to me i have seen 1.8 and 2.5 as the different sizes. Most SSD's for laptops seem to be 2.5 will this work with the E6410/6510?

On another note anyone from Canada buy a dell from the States. I'm frustrating with the huge price differences right now between the US and Canada pricing. I priced out a fairly loaded up model in each country and their is about a $1000 difference with the Canadian dollar being so strong this is frustrating. If i do go ahead with the Dell i will be bringing this up with our local busn. rep.

Dell :: Studio 1558 Vs. Latitude E6510

May 3, 2010

I received a Studio 1558 with spec in my signature last Tuesday. Its screen just went crazy (changing colors, vertical screen, all sorts of things) on Friday and Dell offered me a new system replacement. I bought the system with Dell Preferred Account and also purchased extended warranty on Wednesday (right after I received the laptop) using my debit card.

I said go ahead and the rep in Philippines told me that she would process the new system dispatch on Monday, which is tomorrow. Now I'm thinking I would not want Studio 15 for durability issue, especially because of the screen failure in 3 days of opening the box. I loved virtually everything of the laptop initially but I feel like I should get a Latitude.

Question 1
So, I'll talk to Customer Services first thing tomorrow in the morning and return my Studio. Since I used DPA, I haven't paid anything for the system itself - this probably won't be a problem for refund. But how about warranty? Am I going to get that refunded to my debit card account as soon as I return the laptop?

I configured Latitude E6510 as follows:
Core i5 520, 4GB @ 1333, 250GB @ 7200rpm, FHD 1920x1080, NVS 3100M, backlit keyboard, advanced-N 6200, no bluetooth, no webcam, no DVD burner, 3yr basic mail-in service warranty.
I also decided to just get Windows Vista Basic 32 bit. They are charging US$109 more for Win7 Pro x64, but I'll be able to download it for free using my school's MSDN Academic Alliance program .....

Dell Latitude E6510 :: How To Upgrade HDD Without OS Disks

Dec 27, 2014

I have a Dell Latitude E6510 that I bought new in 2010. Its only 4 years old, but the HDD I believe is failing as I got this message when I did a Pre-Boot Assessment:

Error Code: 0146

My machine did not come with Windows 7 Disks.  Is there a way I can backup the Windows OS so that I can get Disks to install on the new HDD I purchase? Or do I have to buy another Windows 7 license?

I have the Windows 7 Repair Disk. Would this get me going to install Windows 7 on a new HDD? I have my original Windows 7 OS License and Dell Backup and Recovery is installed on my machine. I used The Dell Recovery Tool to make a backup media on an external HDD and this is the file structure that was copied:

Are any of these files the Windows 7 OS or how do I get copies?

Dell Latitude E6510 :: Doesn't Boot / What Is Option ROM

Jan 25, 2015

I was given a nice E6510 that doesn't boot. I've taken it apart and tested the memory, all the connections, reseated the processor (yes I used arctic silver) and it never gets past the 'one time boot menu', the diagnostic boot freezes but I CAN get to the very complex BIOS version A16.

So, I bought a new MOBO thinking that would solve the boot issue but it hasn't-it's doing exactly the same thing. may indicate the problem-Dell calls this an "OPTION ROM", may be 'unseated' or the system board is bad.

What is "Option ROM" and how can it be reseated? Are there any other things I can do in BIOS to change this? I also replaced the SATA CDROM and the hard drive, and I know the USB port works okay but nothing will boot from them.

Dell Latitude E6510 :: Will Not Recognize Memory Upgrade To 8GB (2 X 4GB)

Oct 21, 2014

I keep running into a problem with windows not loading after installing new RAM. I am currently using the original 4GB (2 x 2GB) it came with and I am wanting to go with 8GB (2 x 4GB). I am using the recommended Crucial RAM and I have checked the BIOS which recognizes the new memory. The BIOS is up to date running A16 version. I have not been able to find any settings that would be inhibiting it from running. I have noticed that the currently installed RAM runs a 1067mhz even though it is rated at 1333mhz. As far as I can tell there is no memory remapping feature for the BIOS which does not make sense.

Here is a snap shot of what I have:

Dell Latitude E6510 :: Spontaneous Shutdown And Reboot?

Sep 8, 2010

I've had my E6510 for about 2 months and I am having trouble with a spontaneous shutdown and reboot. There are no errors in the shutdown and the system reboots automatically within a few seconds of shutdown. I'm also experiencing trouble with system freezes. This latter problem may be fixed by an updated bios (as mentioned in another thread), but the shutdown and reboot is about to drive me crazy.

There is no rhyme or reason for it. I had it shutdown once when I pulled out a flashdrive one time, but the other times this was not an issue. Today I was typing an email message when it simply shutdown and rebooted.

It does not seem to be getting hot, but I need to check the LCD as mentioned in another thread.

I should mention this is 64-bit with 8MB RAM, running Windows 7.
