Dell Latitude E6510 :: Doesn't Boot / What Is Option ROM
Jan 25, 2015
I was given a nice E6510 that doesn't boot. I've taken it apart and tested the memory, all the connections, reseated the processor (yes I used arctic silver) and it never gets past the 'one time boot menu', the diagnostic boot freezes but I CAN get to the very complex BIOS version A16.
So, I bought a new MOBO thinking that would solve the boot issue but it hasn't-it's doing exactly the same thing. may indicate the problem-Dell calls this an "OPTION ROM", may be 'unseated' or the system board is bad.
What is "Option ROM" and how can it be reseated? Are there any other things I can do in BIOS to change this? I also replaced the SATA CDROM and the hard drive, and I know the USB port works okay but nothing will boot from them.

Installed replacement hard drive in Latitude E6510. Ordered same drive as originally installed from Dell. When I try to install OS on new drive I get the "No Boot Device Found" error. When I enter set up the HDD and DVD drive are shown as installed. I changed the boot sequence to have the DVD run as first boot device.

I received a Studio 1558 with spec in my signature last Tuesday. Its screen just went crazy (changing colors, vertical screen, all sorts of things) on Friday and Dell offered me a new system replacement. I bought the system with Dell Preferred Account and also purchased extended warranty on Wednesday (right after I received the laptop) using my debit card.
I said go ahead and the rep in Philippines told me that she would process the new system dispatch on Monday, which is tomorrow. Now I'm thinking I would not want Studio 15 for durability issue, especially because of the screen failure in 3 days of opening the box. I loved virtually everything of the laptop initially but I feel like I should get a Latitude.
Question 1
So, I'll talk to Customer Services first thing tomorrow in the morning and return my Studio. Since I used DPA, I haven't paid anything for the system itself - this probably won't be a problem for refund. But how about warranty? Am I going to get that refunded to my debit card account as soon as I return the laptop?
I configured Latitude E6510 as follows:
Core i5 520, 4GB @ 1333, 250GB @ 7200rpm, FHD 1920x1080, NVS 3100M, backlit keyboard, advanced-N 6200, no bluetooth, no webcam, no DVD burner, 3yr basic mail-in service warranty.
I also decided to just get Windows Vista Basic 32 bit. They are charging US$109 more for Win7 Pro x64, but I'll be able to download it for free using my school's MSDN Academic Alliance program .....

I have a Dell Latitude E6510 that I bought new in 2010. Its only 4 years old, but the HDD I believe is failing as I got this message when I did a Pre-Boot Assessment:
Error Code: 0146
Message Error Code: 2000-0146
My machine did not come with Windows 7 Disks. Is there a way I can backup the Windows OS so that I can get Disks to install on the new HDD I purchase? Or do I have to buy another Windows 7 license?
I have the Windows 7 Repair Disk. Would this get me going to install Windows 7 on a new HDD? I have my original Windows 7 OS License and Dell Backup and Recovery is installed on my machine. I used The Dell Recovery Tool to make a backup media on an external HDD and this is the file structure that was copied:
Boot
Dell
Sources
bootmgr
Are any of these files the Windows 7 OS or how do I get copies?

on my E6510 I did install 8gb ram but windows 7 32 bit recognizes only 4GB. I'm thinking of switching to the 64-bit version of Windows 7 Professional, but I have doubts about the license key and the drivers. First, when changing from 32-bit to 64-bit, the current license is valid? If it is not, can I get a valid license from my actual? Finally, the drivers, are all supported? There is an image of Windows 7 Professional 64-bit (eg iso) downloadable from the Dell site with all the drivers and applications for my laptop?

I keep running into a problem with windows not loading after installing new RAM. I am currently using the original 4GB (2 x 2GB) it came with and I am wanting to go with 8GB (2 x 4GB). I am using the recommended Crucial RAM and I have checked the BIOS which recognizes the new memory. The BIOS is up to date running A16 version. I have not been able to find any settings that would be inhibiting it from running. I have noticed that the currently installed RAM runs a 1067mhz even though it is rated at 1333mhz. As far as I can tell there is no memory remapping feature for the BIOS which does not make sense.
Here is a snap shot of what I have:
Operating System
System Model
Windows 7 Ultimate (x64) Service Pack 1 (build 7601)Install Language: English (United States)System Locale: English (United States)Installed: 9/29/2014 3:01:57 PMBoot Mode: BIOS (Secure Boot not supported)

I've had my E6510 for about 2 months and I am having trouble with a spontaneous shutdown and reboot. There are no errors in the shutdown and the system reboots automatically within a few seconds of shutdown. I'm also experiencing trouble with system freezes. This latter problem may be fixed by an updated bios (as mentioned in another thread), but the shutdown and reboot is about to drive me crazy.
There is no rhyme or reason for it. I had it shutdown once when I pulled out a flashdrive one time, but the other times this was not an issue. Today I was typing an email message when it simply shutdown and rebooted.
It does not seem to be getting hot, but I need to check the LCD as mentioned in another thread.
I should mention this is 64-bit with 8MB RAM, running Windows 7.

I'm using laptop Latitude E 6510 with video card nVidida NVS 3100m. I have external monitor - HP LP2465, which I use when I'm working home.
Working of office jobs, I saw, that laptop become warm. I cheked the temperatures (Everest Ultimate, vers.4.50) and I saw, that video card is relatively worm - after several minutes temperatures of video card is about 130 F and soon reach up to 140-150 F. Then temperature stay in this limits.
I would like to know if such temperatures are normal. I bought cooling laptop pad, but it doesn't make real difference.

The notebook proceeds into Windows startup (I am running Win 7 Pro 32-bit). How can I get to the system setup menu and the boot menu on this notebook?

Latitude E6500 and Precision M4400 were basically the same machine, the differences being the M4400's (obviously) different aesthetic on the lid, the more powerful GPU options, and a handful of other tweaks that I don't really remember the specifics of.
From what I can tell, the situation looks to be about the same this time around with the 15.6" Latitude E6510 vs. the 15.6" Precision M4500.
The Precision offers beefier GPU options and a 1600x900 sRGB LED display option, but I want the lower-power WLED 1080p display anyway so that's no loss

We have a user that has had a Latitude E6510 for 16 months. During this time, she has had A LOT of blue screens of death. We have tried numerous attempts to troubleshoot and fix. The Event Viewer doesn't show anything abnormal prior to the crashes.
Once I can get my hands on the laptop for a decent amount of time, I plan on running the Dell online diagnostic tool but I think we've tried that before. I am posting this in an attempt to see if any others out there have had the same problem with their E6510 crashing and have come up with a fix on your own.
I TRIED to do searches to find potential answers but the I kept getting "Error retrieving documents." no matter what I used as a search value from E6510 to Latitude to Blue Screen.

I have a Latitude e6510 display port. The graphics card that came with the laptop is Nvidia NVS 3100M.
My display port does not output. External screen just says <No video signal>
The Nvidia control panel can also not see any other monitors.
I have tried this with multiple displays. I have updated to the latest drivers for everything including Nvidia.I ran the scan system for driver updates utility from Dell.
How do I get the display port to start outputting. Is there some special driver that is needed?

When I installed Windows 8.1 (from the MSDN developer site) on My Latitude E6510 it has an unknown device called Broadcom USH. A Windows 7 driver would probably work, but I don't know what that device does, so I don't know which driver to try and install. I think it's for the BCM5880 chip. What does that do?

I have a Dell Latitude E6510. I recently bought an off-brand replacement battery to replace my two year old battery that came with the laptop. The new one is a 12 cell battery whereas the old one is a 6 cell battery. I put the battery in just fine and it booted up perfectly. Its weird because on the bottom right of the monitor, it says there is no battery detected and yet I am able to run my laptop without having the power cord plugged in. I have uninstalled the battery drivers and that did not fix it. I am currently letting my battery die in hopes that will fix it.
This is the link to the battery I bought.
[URL]
Also, upon plugging the new battery in, no matter what I do, whether it be charge it with the power cord or let it run off the battery, the battery icon on the hardware of my computer blinks yellow/orange 4 times and then blue once and keeps repeating that.

New Latitude E6510 running Win7 Pro 64 bit. Periodically the laptop will boot with a red X through the speaker icon in the tray. Placing the mouse cursor over the speaker icon displays a message something like "No audio device is installed. A cold boot does not correct the problem. Shutting down, disconnecting the power supply, removing the battery then restarting has corrected the problem so far.
I assume this is a hardware problem.

I'm trying to do a Dell Factory Restore on my Dell Inspiron 1440 Vista laptop. I did a manual reinstallation some days ago, but only halfway through as I got confused with the drivers to install and messed up on the installation sequence, and thus started having driver problems again. Now, I don't see "Repair your computer" on the Vista Advanced Bootup options menu, even though the partition is still there intact and undamaged.
Any way to work this out ? I think I saw an article where doing a lot of steps through command prompt made the Factory Restore work, even when it does not show up.

I have a Latitude E6510 that will not start. When pressing the power button, the power light goes on for about 5 seconds and then turns off. I also notice the battery light flashes a few times when re-connecting the AC adapter.
Removed the battery, held in the power button 30 seconds, but still not working.
We have had this laptop about 6 months. About a month ago, it exhibited this problem. After talking to Dell Support, they recommended a system board replacement. The laptop was sent in and the board was replaced. When I got it back and tried to start it for the first time, it did the same thing. I then pressed the Latitude "ON" button, and the laptop started.
Now it is doing the same thing, and I find it hard to believe that another system board is bad. I am suspicious about this "ON" feature, that maybe the laptop is "stuck" or something trying to get into the "ON" mode. Or maybe it is just trying to get into "ON" mode.
I am not sure what the "ON" feature does, but I have noticed a few other posts on the internet of users having the exact same problem. Again--I find it hard to believe a second system board could be bad.

I’m testing some E4200s (with SED SSDs and regular SSDs) and have run into a possible bug with the HDD password “bypass” option in the BIOS. The “bypass” option in BIOS allows you to specify if the HDD password needs to be entered during warm boots (restarts), standby, etc. I’ve set it to “disable”, which means that the HDD password must always be entered (even for restarts). However, the E4200 does *not* prompt for the HDD password during warm boots (restarts). It correctly prompts for the HDD password during cold boots and standby/hibernate only. I’ve tried upgrading the BIOS to the latest version (A13 to A20), but that didn’t work.
At this point I think it's a bug in the BIOS. I've tried this with different e4200 laptops and different drives (regular SSDs, and self-encrypting SSDs).

I have an Inspiron 15R Model 5010-3228
Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: windowssystem32configsystem
I was able to run diags from F12 at startup - everything seemed to pass but it ended with a message indicating there was no recovery partition.
I have no original media to reinstall.
The laptop was a gift from my father-in-law in Poland. As a result Dell would not provide service. Warranty is now expired.

I noticed that there were new updates so I went ahead and installed them. On restart, the gray screen came up and just sat there. I shut down and started up a few times and same thing. I restarted and held the option key down and it gave me the OS menu and I'm able to boot Mac OSX from there.
I'm going to try to set the default OS using Boot Camp to see if that fixes the problem.

The integrated webcam on my E4310 is not being recognised anywhere. This is a topic which already has several previous discussions, but without any solution for me. The webcam doesn't appear in device manager:
and is not recognised on skype, or the Dell Webcam Central. When put through the Dell diagnostics test it says no camera is installed. Is it possible that there is no webcam on this laptop and what I see above the screen is something else?
