Dell Precision M6300 :: CPU Upgrade To Intel X9100
Dec 16, 2012
Upgrade Dell Precision M6300 - CPU to Intel® Core™2 Extreme Processor X9100 (6M Cache, 3.06 GHz, 1066 MHz FSB)
I know that you can upgrade to Intel® Core™2 Extreme Processor X9000 (6M Cache, 2.80 GHz, 800 MHz FSB)
I am concerned that because of the 1066MHZ FSB on the x9100 the CPU will not work.
However it did not work running BIOS A14...

if anyone has tried to put a 7950GTX from an M1710 into the Precision M6300. My boss wants me to order one for him but he wants to know if he can put in that card for gaming reasons.

Well can it? I want to put one in mine. I guess it's anybody's guess, but I would assume the motherboard will apply the right stepping. The voltage and chipset and socket requirement is the same.

"Notebook Italia has shots and specifications for a rumored 17-inch Dell Precision M6300 laptop, which could replace the ageing Dell Precision M90. We'll start with the most interesting feature, which is a BTO option for up to 8GB of installed RAM available when you include a copy of Vista 64-bit. Beyond that, the M6300 is rumored to feature Intel Core 2 Duos from 1.8GHz up to 2.4GHz, with a 2.6GHz Intel Core Extreme X7800 topping out the line. It'll also come with options for NVIDIA Quadro FX 1600M, 2600M, or FX 3600M graphics cards. There will apparently also be options for 1440x900, 1900x1200, and 1920x1200 glossy and matte displays, and a Blu-ray drive configuration. The word is that this model could ship by August 31st, so at least you haven't got long to wait."

this short review was already posted by me in the dell 17" section,
but i'll put it here, too, so it is easier accessable for all forum users.
it is also a little different, since i added a few things, which i noticed
while playing around with the laptop.
DELL Precision M6300
a few days ago i got my precision m6300 notebook from dell.
so far i benchmarked it with 3dmark06 and took a short look at it.
i payed 1483 euro and the laptop came with the following options:
core2duo t8300 2.4GHz/3MB L2 cache
nvidia fx 3600m card with 512MB
2GB 667MHz RAM (upgraded to 3GB myself)
200GB HDD 7200rpm (seagate)
1440x900 non glare display (lg, replaced by a samsung)
fingerprint reader
vista business to xp professional downgrade (you can use both)
3 years international guarantee
1. 3dmark06
i did the 3dmark06 benchmark at stock clock speeds (i think it's 500/799) with the stock dell driver 175.75. i am running the preinstalled xp pro operation system and most unnecessary background processes are disabled. i have:
8860 3dmarks
with a light overclock (600/900) i have:
9686 3dmarks
i think that's pretty nice. considering the slower cpu (2.4GHz vs. 2.8GHz) and the 175.75 stock dell driver, which is not optimized for gaming, the performance comes pretty close to the 8800GTX in the alienware/ notebooks (~9200 3marks) and it is pretty much the same like the mySN notebook's with the same processor (~8900 3dmarks).
this fact makes me think, that the fx3600 is probably rather a modified 8800gtx card than a gts and that the info shown by gpu-z is wrong. but who knows.
as the card can be overclocked even higher and also there is a way to oc the cpu, the notebook is able to get 10.000+ in 3dmark06.
btw: overclocking is very easy, you can just do it with ntune and there is no need to flash the vbios.
2. what's new
the notebook is very similar to the inspiron 9400/e1705 i had before.
the differences are:
a. different colour (makes it look a lot better)
b. the useless media direct button is used to switch between performance and battery save mode now (useful)
c. the battery is stronger (4 hours battery life vs. 2.5 hours)
d. fingerprint reader available................................

I have an M6300 Mobile Workstation that does not turn on. The green "On" indicator goes on and then the Cap Lock indicator just blinks. The screen never turns on and I never see the Dell opening splash screen when starting the computer. I have to hold the power button for over 20 seconds to turn the unit off.
What is going on with this computer especially what the blinking Cap Lock indicator means? Can I guess that it could be a hard drive problem because it tries to start, but never does and hangs with a blank screen, a Blinking Caps Lock indicator and the "On" indicator on steady?

I may have the opportunity to pick up a cheap X9100, far cheaper than I could get say a T9800 T9900, both of which would be preferable due to 35W.
Acers literature states CPU's up to C2D 6mb are supported, I saw over here Acer 8930 - X9100 CPU update. that a user with an 8930g upgraded to an x9100.
Does anyone know if the laptop power supply etc would handle a 44W cpu, don't want to burn anything out?
Also heat may be a concern? The cooling system on this notebook appears more substantial than the average. Currently with my P9500 after 8 hours of stessing the max temperature is 63c, and thats on a fresh AS5 application without undervolting
I don't 'need' to upgrade to an X9100 but thought if it's cheap enough I might as well!

I'm curious if anyone knows if these notebooks can be overclocked? If so, how?
I read a review that one laptop vendor allowed over-clocking via BIOS but I'm not sure if Dell does this also and was hopeful that those of you much more learned than I could tell me if it's possible on the new Dell 6300 64 bit with the Intel Core 2 Duo Extreme X9000 chip?

I would like to request your opinion on upgrading my current Sony Vaio VGN-Z590 P9500 2.53ghz processor into a X9100 3.06ghz one. I would like to know if it would still be possible to upgrade my cooling system by just applying a thermal compound on the existing copper wire cooling system. I also plan to add more thermal compound on the cpu and heatsink.

I recently ordered Mushkin Enhanced Blackline 16GB (2 x 8G) 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Laptop Memory Model 997067 - Newegg.com to upgrade ram on DELL M4800. When installed it doesn't let the Laptop to boot. Newegg says this is compatible but the product doesn't.I'm sure I installed it properly. By any chance, did I receive a defective product ? or is the product incompatible unlike Newegg's Memory finder suggestion ? Newegg charges $15 restocking fee, so I would like to make sure i'm not doing something wrong before before returning it.

I just wanted to let everyone know that it works and doesn't require an OS re-install like the Yonah-Merom upgrade did on my Toshiba.
The P9700 is ideal because it consumes 28 watts, but operates at 2.8 GHz and has 6 MB of L2 Cache. The T series, which tops off with the T9900 is only marginally faster and consumes 35 watts. The rest of the P series consumes 25 watts.
Consequently, I found the P9700 to be the best performance/power usage ratio for this laptop/platform. Currently it is only available through OEMs as a configuration option on a few Sony Vaio laptops.

I have upgraded my HDX 16 to 8 GB PC2 6400S 800 Mhz RAM and X9100 CPU. I also have Seagate 320 GB 7200 RPM ASG Hard drive.
I was going to try the QX9300 but I was told that QX9300 will not work in a HDX 16.
It looks like the GPU is the bottleneck in this laptop. I’m running DOX’s 185.20 and when I try to overclock the GPU for anythingh over 574 MHz Core Clock or 535 Mhz Memory Clock, the screen starts freezing.
Let me also say that I’m running BIOS F13-A if that has anything to do with it.
I have read some users overclocking up to 660 Mhz Core Clock in HDX 16. How do you do that?

As the title say's,the fastest core duo against the second to slowest choice,as there seem's a fair number of people here who play game's on their M4400's,I thought this might be interesting to some.
Empire total war,I'm sure still carry's out control instruction's much better with the X9100 despite framerates being pretty much identical.....a bit hard to tell as the game AI is soo buggy....

i would like to upgrade my video card, if it is possible and if it is worth it. my 1720 has the mobile intel 965 express chipset family. ive seen sigs (dr650se and someformofhuman) stating that they have the nvidia 8600m gt and was wondering if this is compatible with my 1720.
also i found out through this forum that i can upgrade my cpu (which is the measly t5450 1.66 ghz) to the beastly t9300, and add a 2nd hard drive (which is my first step in upgrading this dell because i only have a 160 gb drive).
i was looking for a new laptop until i came across this forum and found out the possibilities of my dell. i decided to stick with this and just upgrade it! thanks for the insight, and thanks in advance for all the help that i will be asking for!

Just recieved my intel 5300 wifi card ready for the upgrade.
Upgrade physically went semi well, the 4965agn that was fitted was a devil to get out.
Seems like acer decided to get superman to tighten the two screws that hold the wifi card down. In the end the only solution was to remove the 2 pillers from the pcb(with pliers and brute force) and remove the card.
Windows xp fired up fine, no wifi connected popup. drivers were my first thought.
Checked device manager, code 10 on the device. tried new drivers, old driver sets, no progress.
Also there was a few links about the pcie 2 and pcie 1 compatiblity problems. But a pcie2 card should run at the pcie1 speeds when fitted to that slot, so that shouldnt be the problem.
Ive ordered a 2nd intel 5300, one that should be 'more' compatible..we will see. will post update on that when it arrives.
as of this point id say that the intel wifi 5300 does not play well with the acer 6920g.

A friend has a macbook pro 17" with an SATA 113GB usable drive, Intel 2GHz core duo drive (not core 2). I normally work on PCs- I know very little about macs other enough to find system specs.
Is there any limit to the storage capacity size of a notebook drive I can install? I typically use the Seagate Momentus 7200 drives on laptops.
Also are there any links or threads to instructions on replacing the drive? I found the one for how to do it on Sony Vaios on this site invaluable.

After spending a great deal of time reading through various forums I've arrived here in hopes of getting Fallout 3 to run properly on my M6300.
Whenever run the game it seems to wind up having many graphic bugs (improper texture mapping etc.).
I believe the issue lies with the fact that the M6300 uses a Quadro card which isn't optimized for game playing--though I would appreciate it if I could play the game on any level, albeit the lowest possible settings.

I'm just selling my Inspiron 9400 on eBay and considering to buy a M6300 instead.
It seems to be a powerful Laptop and a worthy upgrade.
1. Is it worth to buy 3 GB of RAM instead of 2 GB? I mean, is there ANY performance boost (for gaming)? Or will upcoming titles be probable of making use of more than 2 GB? I will be using Win XP btw...
2. Is the C2D T8300 (2.4GHz,3MB L2 Cache, 800MHz FSB) a good choice? Or is the T9300 (2.5GHz) THAT much better (in terms of gaming performance)?
3. Is the 1440x900 non-glossy screen any good? Maybe some comparison to the one I used before (sharp/1920x1200/glossy)?
4. My set of choice will cost around 1550 euro (without the VAT Tax) and be something like:
- T8300 (2,4 GHz)
- FX 3600
- 200 GB HDD (7200 rpm)
- 1440x900 non-glossy
- 3 years guarantee
Is there any 15"/17" laptop from dell with a similar graphic performance at a similar (or cheaper) price?
5. Is it really worth to pay the 350 euro more to get the fx 3600 instead of the fx 1600?

As far as I can see it the only option with the possibility of docking and decent graphics performance are the m90/m6300 (regardless of manufacture). Has anyone heard news of a 8800 equivalent card for the m6300? I am duo to replace my m90 and believe the docking to be very convenient. Why doesn't the 5793 or m15x come with a docking option!
