"Notebook Italia has shots and specifications for a rumored 17-inch Dell Precision M6300 laptop, which could replace the ageing Dell Precision M90. We'll start with the most interesting feature, which is a BTO option for up to 8GB of installed RAM available when you include a copy of Vista 64-bit. Beyond that, the M6300 is rumored to feature Intel Core 2 Duos from 1.8GHz up to 2.4GHz, with a 2.6GHz Intel Core Extreme X7800 topping out the line. It'll also come with options for NVIDIA Quadro FX 1600M, 2600M, or FX 3600M graphics cards. There will apparently also be options for 1440x900, 1900x1200, and 1920x1200 glossy and matte displays, and a Blu-ray drive configuration. The word is that this model could ship by August 31st, so at least you haven't got long to wait."
picked up this system last wkend but still in the progress of benchmarking and testing

this short review was already posted by me in the dell 17" section, but i'll put it here, too, so it is easier accessable for all forum users. it is also a little different, since i added a few things, which i noticed while playing around with the laptop.
DELL Precision M6300
a few days ago i got my precision m6300 notebook from dell. so far i benchmarked it with 3dmark06 and took a short look at it. i payed 1483 euro and the laptop came with the following options:
core2duo t8300 2.4GHz/3MB L2 cache nvidia fx 3600m card with 512MB 2GB 667MHz RAM (upgraded to 3GB myself) 200GB HDD 7200rpm (seagate) 1440x900 non glare display (lg, replaced by a samsung) fingerprint reader vista business to xp professional downgrade (you can use both) 3 years international guarantee
1. 3dmark06
i did the 3dmark06 benchmark at stock clock speeds (i think it's 500/799) with the stock dell driver 175.75. i am running the preinstalled xp pro operation system and most unnecessary background processes are disabled. i have:
8860 3dmarks
with a light overclock (600/900) i have:
9686 3dmarks
i think that's pretty nice. considering the slower cpu (2.4GHz vs. 2.8GHz) and the 175.75 stock dell driver, which is not optimized for gaming, the performance comes pretty close to the 8800GTX in the alienware/ notebooks (~9200 3marks) and it is pretty much the same like the mySN notebook's with the same processor (~8900 3dmarks). this fact makes me think, that the fx3600 is probably rather a modified 8800gtx card than a gts and that the info shown by gpu-z is wrong. but who knows.
as the card can be overclocked even higher and also there is a way to oc the cpu, the notebook is able to get 10.000+ in 3dmark06.
btw: overclocking is very easy, you can just do it with ntune and there is no need to flash the vbios.
2. what's new
the notebook is very similar to the inspiron 9400/e1705 i had before.
the differences are:
a. different colour (makes it look a lot better) b. the useless media direct button is used to switch between performance and battery save mode now (useful) c. the battery is stronger (4 hours battery life vs. 2.5 hours) d. fingerprint reader available................................
if anyone has tried to put a 7950GTX from an M1710 into the Precision M6300. My boss wants me to order one for him but he wants to know if he can put in that card for gaming reasons.
I have an M6300 Mobile Workstation that does not turn on. The green "On" indicator goes on and then the Cap Lock indicator just blinks. The screen never turns on and I never see the Dell opening splash screen when starting the computer. I have to hold the power button for over 20 seconds to turn the unit off.
What is going on with this computer especially what the blinking Cap Lock indicator means? Can I guess that it could be a hard drive problem because it tries to start, but never does and hangs with a blank screen, a Blinking Caps Lock indicator and the "On" indicator on steady?
does anybody know some news abou the new models of precision line from dell? i checked that the last two series were announced after one year and the 4400 was releases in august 2008...
i'd like to buy a m4400 but i don't if it worth is to wait...
I was wondering when we can expect to see an all-new, top-end gaming laptop from dell. The transition from the M1710 to the M1730 seemed extremely quick, in fact with seemingly minimal hardware improvements.
I have been looking into purchasing a desktop replacement laptop and the 8930g seemed to be exactly what i was after.
However due to the fact that the laptop has been out for quite some time now i was concerned a successor would come out within the next 1-2 months for a similar amount of money.
I tried searching for an 8940, as the 8920 was first and then the 8930, i have found no 40 but i have found a press release for a recently announced 8935:
[url]
There is very little information available in english about this model atm on google but obviously i would like to know if this is going to be the successor for the 8930 and whether it is worth waiting for this model to come out with what i presume to be superior specifications.
What i am actually holding out for though is a graphics card option that would be higher than then 9700 option found within the 8930.
Anyway, i was hoping other people might know something about this 8935 and if it was indeed the follow-up to the 8930 or that perhaps it is unrelated to it and i may as well just proceed with the 8930 purchase now.
After spending a great deal of time reading through various forums I've arrived here in hopes of getting Fallout 3 to run properly on my M6300.
Whenever run the game it seems to wind up having many graphic bugs (improper texture mapping etc.).
I believe the issue lies with the fact that the M6300 uses a Quadro card which isn't optimized for game playing--though I would appreciate it if I could play the game on any level, albeit the lowest possible settings.
i have M1710 and i have question about replacement of MB and Graphic card will MB and graphic card from M6300 fit into M1710 chasis? and will it work if i will replace only those two components?
I'm just selling my Inspiron 9400 on eBay and considering to buy a M6300 instead. It seems to be a powerful Laptop and a worthy upgrade.
1. Is it worth to buy 3 GB of RAM instead of 2 GB? I mean, is there ANY performance boost (for gaming)? Or will upcoming titles be probable of making use of more than 2 GB? I will be using Win XP btw...
2. Is the C2D T8300 (2.4GHz,3MB L2 Cache, 800MHz FSB) a good choice? Or is the T9300 (2.5GHz) THAT much better (in terms of gaming performance)?
3. Is the 1440x900 non-glossy screen any good? Maybe some comparison to the one I used before (sharp/1920x1200/glossy)?
4. My set of choice will cost around 1550 euro (without the VAT Tax) and be something like:
- T8300 (2,4 GHz) - FX 3600 - 200 GB HDD (7200 rpm) - 1440x900 non-glossy - 3 years guarantee
Is there any 15"/17" laptop from dell with a similar graphic performance at a similar (or cheaper) price?
5. Is it really worth to pay the 350 euro more to get the fx 3600 instead of the fx 1600?
As far as I can see it the only option with the possibility of docking and decent graphics performance are the m90/m6300 (regardless of manufacture). Has anyone heard news of a 8800 equivalent card for the m6300? I am duo to replace my m90 and believe the docking to be very convenient. Why doesn't the 5793 or m15x come with a docking option!
i recently saw some cheap mobile penrynn processors on ebay. so i think about upgrading my cpu in the future (they get cheaper from day to day) .
but i have the following questions before further considering that:
1. does changing the cpu on your own void your dell warranty in any way? 2. is it difficult to change it (never opened my laptop before)? 3. can i use ALL of the processors listed on the bottom of this post? (as the x9000 has 44 watt instead of the others' 35 watt) 4. is it just plug & play /stick the new cpu inside and it works?
I'm not looking to debate the geforce vs quadro performance nor do I want people to tell me to wait for the 9m series cards, just a couple quick questions.
Does the m1730 have a docking port? From what I can find, I'm thinking it does not. For that matter, does the m6300 have one? I think it does...
Can an 8800gtx from an m1730 be put into an m6300? If not, I'll be fine with the 3600m, but I prefer geforce cards.
If yes, where can you get an 8800gtx and how much do they cost? I've seen people saying anything from over $2000 to $700.... which is quite a difference.
I guess while I'm at it, are there any other huge issues that I've maybe overlooked? I'm thinking about things like the huge LCD problems that everyone experienced with light leakage and whatnot on the m170/9300 series and even overflowing into the next gen stuff iirc.
I have installed a FX 2500M (rev A02) on a M6300 system board A10 Bios, the card is working but its clock is fixed to 100MHz (100MHz core + 100MHz mem).
FX 2500m doesn't switch to 3D Low mode (200/300) or 3D Performance mode (500/600). It always remains on 2D Mode (100/100)
Off Course the same card works correctly on M90 System Board.
I have tried many drivers, DELL version and generic version by laptopvideo2go, but same results (always fixed to 100MHz).
I have tried Rivatuner to force clock switch. Same results No Switch
I have even installed a new OS (Vista 64) and with it, I have a strange situation.
With Vista64 (no SP1) original driver supplied by MS (and based, I suppose, on forceware 96.xx) the card seems to works at high clock.
No information tools can be used (with MS Driver) so I can't see which clock are active but 3D performance (games and benchmark) are near the performance achieved with M90.
But once I update the driver by installing a recent version supplied by Nvidia (Dell version or generic is the same), the card blocks to 100MHz even under Vista64.
Unfortunately with MS Driver there are many graphics error and it isn't so usable with 3D application (i.e. games) and furthermore I want to use the card with XP32 (Vista64 has been installed only for tests).
Well i can usually fix my laptop problems but this one has me very surprised and i wanted to ask for opinions before doing somehting drastic (like changing the screen)
But alf m laptop screen goes dim, if this were the only thing the anwser would be obvious (broken screen change it) but the thing fixes when it goes into battery and slowly comes back when its conected again
I has virtually the same brightness on battery mode than on conected mode so the only real thing conecting her does its dimming alf the screen.
Why would it work while on battery and not conected? and why only alf screen?
Like what the title says ive been googling it and can't find anything about it if the x9000 is to be able to be overclocked on the m6300. Anyone care to provide some insight
Was wondering if any of the programmers out there could crack the M6300 bios so it would blind flash a M1710. I have a video card here from an M6300 and an M1710 that I would be willing to brick and RMA if it doesnt work.
I'm looking to buy one of these machines to replace my 2 year old M90 (which I upgraded to full spec, 2500fx, 4gb, fastest available fitting processor).
Essentially both machines have X9000, 4gb RAM, 8xDVD. The 6300 has 200gb HD, and a 512mb 3600fx card, the 1730 has 2x160gb and dual sli 8800gtx. The M6300 is about £100 less ($200).
I'm struggling to decide :- I love the screen and design of my M90 (the glossy screen on the M1730 looks nasty to me), but I'd imagine the 1730 would outperform the M6300 quite substantially (although my M90 actually drew with if not beat its XPS sibling on several games). The M90 was also built fantastically well....I'm not sure about the 1730 never having seen one.
I am trying to find out who the ODM ( original design manufacturer) is for these precision models, dell no longer sells them, perhaps there is another channel for buying one besides Dell???
If anyone has any information please let me know and also what model not just the ODM's name.
For example ALienware laptops are made by the ODM Clevo which also sells the same Chassis without the alienware bling and price under the name of Sager, Averatec also as I recall ....
