Dell Studio 1558 :: Laptop Won't Boot Up / No BIOS Screen
Dec 3, 2014I have a Studio 1558 laptop, about 3 years old and a couple of weeks ago it stopped working.
When I press the power button (both on battery and on mains supply) the power button lights up white and stays white and my backlit keyboard lights up. I can hear the fan whirring but thats all that happens. It will stay like this for ever until I press the power button and it then shuts down instantly. There is no BIOS screen and I get no POST beeps.
I've tried plugging it into my TV as an alternative monitor but there's still nothing. I've checked the hard drive and swapped it for a new one but it still makes no difference. I've checked the memory and that's fine. If i try to boot up with the memory removed I do get two beeps.

Dec 8, 2009I hope I am using the right part of this forum to ask this... Heres my problem: I bought new Dell studio XPS 1340 (CPU: I Core2Duo T9300, GPU: GeForce 9500M (GF 9400MG + GF 9200MGS, HDD: 320GB, 7.2k, RAM: 4GB)
and I had some troubles configuring my graphic cards in SLI mode. I read somewhere, that BIOS upgrade from A07, which I have, to A11 will help with this problem.
I downloaded A11 BIOS update, but the setup wont recognize my current BIOS. When I load into the BIOS I see, that its really rev. A07, also it has header from Dell inc.

So today I found that Dell had an update for the current A8 BIOS on the Studio 1555 that I bought in May of 2009. Just a quick comment, I have had nothing but problems with this laptop. I got it with VISTA 64bit, which you all know sucks balls!!!! So once Win7 came out I bought a 500gb HD and Win7 Ult. 64bit, but as I said, it doesn't seem to be just one thing, its the blue tooth, or the network card, or explorer keeps crashing and restarting by itself constantly, especially yesterday. Plus I've been trying to use this laptop as a dual boot with Ubuntu and Win 7.
So I found the BIOS update today, DL it and closed everything and then started the update. Says its going trough sectors and there are 39 of them, when it got to #20 the thing just stops, everything then freezes after trying to open a new window, ctrl-alt-delete doesn't work, nothing works. So I take the battery out and then of course I go to turn it back on and its dead or bricked or what ever you want to call a $1300 piece of on my coffee table.
So after that I found that a few other people have had the same problem and some people haven't, but I have yet to find someone who has fixed it. So I brought up the ol' Dell Chat support and of course they tell me"oh my supervisor says that your hard drive and mother board are dead now".....!!!!!! I asked how that can be with something they post and let the end user install, now my computers dead, I'm supposed to wait a few days for a tech to call me a schedule an appt. to come to my home and replace the "motherboard and hard drive" according to the chat support.
First of all I am about to smash this thing with a freaking hammer, I have been with PCs forever and when I was looking to buy a laptop, my wife said, don't buy another PC, all you do is spend days and days at your desktop when something goes wrong with windows, she of course is a MAC person and has always used them, but I said "oh no hun, this new Win7 is going to be great and Dell have great laptops" Holy on a shingle I was totally wrong and I will never buy another PC, it will be Macs from now on once I get a chance to buy a new laptop or desktop. But anyway, since Dell has about the test customer service I have ever experienced, I decided to post my conversation with the person from dell....enjoy, and by the way..... DO NOT INSTALL DELL STUDIO BIOS UPDATE A8 TO A9, YOUR COMPUTER WILL DIE.....I'm only kind of lucky since the computer is less than a year old and I have 2 years of onsite service if I need it. So anyway, here is my conversatation, take it as you will, but I would be very wary with this whole thing and Dell laptops in general, Dell, your company used to be all over the news and mags. because you were made by a smart guy who liked computers and wanted to give people what they really wanted when they needed to buy a new computer. Well I can tell you that ever since Dell came about as a company, all of that flash and glitter about their company, computers and people has faded so badly, these things might as well be sold in a vending machine, you think that when you spend $1300 you will get something really good. What a crock of crap...forget you dell, this thing is being sold ASAP after it is fixed......oh yeah heres my conversation for all you other dell studio 1555 people who need help or ammo in case their crappy customer service doesn't help you.
please for the sake of all of us, if you can and are willing, please read the doc I attached to this post which is the chat log between me and the Dell support person....we are all going to need help with this at some point if a simple BIOS update that is made to run in windows kills are computers!

Feb 21, 2013When I boot up my PC it comes to a screen expressing that the battery is critically low and the AC Adapter cannot charge properly, press F1 twice to continue.
The computer continues to boot up fine, but is running strictly off AC power. It boots up the same with or without the battery locked in. I even bought a used, but guaranteed functional battery and it had the same result.
After researching a lot online I saw a common solution is to update the Bios.   Currently my system has Bios A01, and I have tried updating to A07, A11, and even A00 without luck. When running the executable in Windows 7, just before it flashes the system with a new bios I get fail message saying operation cannot complete because AC Adapter and battery must be present and functional.
So I found a guide online to create an MS-DOS startup boot drive, along with the Bios .exe's which can be run from MS-DOS. The system booted up into MS-DOS mode fine, but I received an error running the .exe, "Cannot run in DOS mode". I also tried to run the .exe with the /forceit command afterwards with no luck.
So at this point I don't know if my laptop simply needs a BIOS update, or if I have a faulty motherboard or battery sensor.Â
Ideally I'd like a solution to upgrade the bios without a battery that works and can resolve my problem. But if we can't find a solution, I need to know what needs to be fixed so I can repair my laptop through Dell's Out of Warranty Repair service.Â

Nov 19, 2009A new bios update was released today for the XPS 1645 which apparently enhance sound quality. Thats the only thing listed in the release notes anyways.
I installed it on mine, but haven't noticed a difference as of yet.

Dell Studio 1737 :: Hard Drive Recognition After BIOS Update
Feb 17, 2013I was trying to update my old studio 1737, and updated the BIOS to A09 while doing an otherwise thorough and effective diagnostic (from Dell website). Now when the BIOS does identify my hard drive its inaccurate (intermittent ID of the HDD, showing no HDD sometime and a Samsung other times). So, laptop fails to boot, saying operating system not found. Am trying to flash BIOS using last working version on USB stick, following advice found on internet. Well out of warranty period.

I will have to try to call them and order rather than order via the website directly as I want the Windows 7 Home Premium install and all the accompanying software to be in English (I live in Italy and that's the reason for the italian info in the configurations).

Mar 5, 2010I was wondering if anyone has had problems with their Studio 1558 orders? I ordered on 23/02 and the EDD was 09/03, but it's now been put back to the 01/04!
The only custom components I requested were the FullHD WLED screen and the backlit keyboard. I have to say I'm not very impressed!

Feb 10, 2010Just received my Studio 15 today and it's a nice looking machine but the fan seems to run more often than I'd like. I've updated the BIOS to A03, the most current, but it doesn't seem to resolve the issue.

Feb 18, 2010I got a new Dell Studio 1558 a week or so back. Ever since I got it, I feel a constant vibration to the left of the touchpad.
After doing some research and asking some questions, apparently the Seagate 7200 RPMs have this issue. I confirmed it was the HD by putting the HD to sleep and the vibration would stop.
The best solution to me seems to replace the Seagate with a WD 5400 RPM HD. I have been looking at their Scorpio Blue for this:

Will it work with the 1558? And, how do I go about setting up the laptop after replacing the HD?
I don't have any important documents that need to be transferred, but I am guessing I will have to use the Dell DVDs to setup Windows?

After installation it said there's a warning in the log, I checked the log and there was nothing wrong there.

1080p monitor is a must unless you need large text. The 1080p screen is perfectly fine for all use. I thought it might be too hard to read, but actually find it to be perfect given how crisp the image is.
Build quality is good, not as good as the XPS but still decent. At work I use a Lenovo T500 that has a magnesium skeleton under the lid and it very solidly built .....

Jan 25, 2010I ordered a Dell Studio 1558 on January 19, 2010.

I'm obviously excited about receiving it, however.... after close to a week... it's still in "pre-production."
I've called a few times. First time I was told "It could take up to 48 hours to get out of pre-production and into in-production."
Fair enough. 48 hours later it was still in pre-production, so I called back and they told me it could be a payment issue. So I called the verification department and they told me everything was 100% good to go.
Anyway, different people telling me different things, finally I landed on some honesty. A representative told me that the problem is that there is a part on back-order and so that is why it hasn't moved into production yet. I'm guessing it's the processor, what do you guys think?
Anyway, the original delivery date was projected as February 4, 2010. The guy on the phone today said that I should expect the order to be moved into production within 48 hours (I'm not so sure I believe this) and that the delivery date will probably move to February 9, 2010.
I have absolutely no problem with this, part not in stock = no problem. My issue is, different reps telling me different stories. If it comes down to waiting till February 9 and I get my laptop then, I am fine with that, but if this drags on farther, I would rather cancel my order and purchase from another company.
What do you guys think? Also, has anybody actually received their 1558 yet? What do you think of it?
Dell :: Studio 1558 Freezing, Unresponsive
May 14, 2010Had this Studio 1558 for about a week now. It's been mostly good, except it's been freezing for no good reason every so often. I'm not getting error messages, BSODs, automatic restarts, or any of that. The screens just stop responding.
I suspected it was a bad Win7 install, so I wiped and reinstalled Win7HPx64. Still froze.
Went back to a single-monitor setup, still froze.
Tried updating to the Catalyst 10.04 drivers, still froze.
Disabled Powerplay, still froze.
Changed AV/Firewall and uninstalled a pile of crap, still froze.
Installed XP, then Ubuntu, still froze.
Odd thing? Nothing in the event viewer to indicate a crash, other than the fact that a kernel power error shows up because I force a shutdown. I've yet to find a .dmp file anywhere that would indicate an actual BSOD. Fan never spun up, CPU monitors and logs don't show any sudden spike or drop in processor activity. Think the 4570 is busted?

just recalled, I've also changed power settings so the CPU can't throttle, been monitoring all 8 cores, ran off battery and off ac, all to no effect.
happens whether i'm streaming video via hulu desktop, just browsing webpages, running virus scans, or just doing mostly nothing. ran the gamut of dell diagnostics, but nothing.

Feb 18, 2010so, this has happened twice. Last time I didn't now when it happened as I was not using the laptop for anything.
But just right now, I was listening to music on it and it just shutdown in the middle of all that. Nothing else being done on it.

May 19, 2010Just got a 1558 in replacement for a 1525. I popped the back cover to install my upgraded Wifi, and add the WWAN and Bluetooth... No extra mini PCI slots for the BT or WWAN - There is a sticker that says WWAN but no connector or wires.... Since my 1525 has these options ( I did not buy the BT or WWAN card from Dell ) do i ask for another system that has these on-board? Is Dell obligated to provide one that is capable even though in their records i did not have BT or WWAN.

May 3, 2010I received a Studio 1558 with spec in my signature last Tuesday. Its screen just went crazy (changing colors, vertical screen, all sorts of things) on Friday and Dell offered me a new system replacement. I bought the system with Dell Preferred Account and also purchased extended warranty on Wednesday (right after I received the laptop) using my debit card.
I said go ahead and the rep in Philippines told me that she would process the new system dispatch on Monday, which is tomorrow. Now I'm thinking I would not want Studio 15 for durability issue, especially because of the screen failure in 3 days of opening the box. I loved virtually everything of the laptop initially but I feel like I should get a Latitude.
Question 1
So, I'll talk to Customer Services first thing tomorrow in the morning and return my Studio. Since I used DPA, I haven't paid anything for the system itself - this probably won't be a problem for refund. But how about warranty? Am I going to get that refunded to my debit card account as soon as I return the laptop?
I configured Latitude E6510 as follows:
Core i5 520, 4GB @ 1333, 250GB @ 7200rpm, FHD 1920x1080, NVS 3100M, backlit keyboard, advanced-N 6200, no bluetooth, no webcam, no DVD burner, 3yr basic mail-in service warranty.
I also decided to just get Windows Vista Basic 32 bit. They are charging US$109 more for Win7 Pro x64, but I'll be able to download it for free using my school's MSDN Academic Alliance program .....
