View 8 RepliesDoes anyone know the part number/manufacturer for the XPS 16's 128gb SSD. I just bought the 1645 with it and would like more info when I present the computer as a gift for xmas.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have an XPS 1640 and an ancient Dell Insiprion 9300 (1.6 GHz and just 2 GB ram) with XP.
Running identical programs on identical machines,. the XPS (2.6 GHz processor and 7200 RPM HD) is MUCH slower running programs (e.g., website creating programs, photoshop, etc.) The culprit must be the Vista.
I see the topic raised here before but no real clear answers. Has anyone eliminated the Vista on the 1640 completely and run the XP in its place .....
Bringing in an SD slot and bringing back the FireWire port—while also lowering prices—eliminated Apple's weakest links in the 13-inch MacBook Pro. Add bigger, better battery life and you've got yourself a winner.

I am trying to decide between the Studio 15 laptop or the XPS 15 laptop. I really really really wanted a backlit keyboard, and while the Studio 15 has it the XPS 15 does not.
But, that being said I really like the look and build qaulity of the XPS 15. I'm just using it for web surfing and programming, so the power isn't a concern and they are relatively the same price(with the customization that I want)
I just got a Dell Studio laptop (OPI edition), and it’s incredibly fast & gorgeous!
Just thought I’d pass this along too, Dell has a coupon for $50 off systems $699+ with coupon code: WQQ$MQ0M4JNCWD. Or you can save $100 off systems $999+ with coupon code: B980P775CS2Z02. These last til the end of June at dell.com/dellu. I highly recommend Dell. I know Macs seem to be the latest trend or the “go to” computer, but Dell is all I’ve ever owned and I’ve never had an issue. I’m definitely a repeat customer, and I always suggest it to my friends and family.
I have an order for the XPS 1645 16" and am wondering what bag you guys would recommend.
Ideally I'm after something lightweight and not a heavy duty briefcase style if I can help it.
I see loads of bags for 15.6" and 17" - should I err towards a 17" one?
I'm in the UK, so have been looking at what Amazon offer, this one seems popular:
Does anyone know off hand if opening up my laptop would affect my warranty? I am taking a ComTIA A+ course, and I wanted to open the case to my Dell Laptop in class, but my instructor wasn't sure if I should because he said the warranty may not be any good if I open it.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm looking into getting a laptop fairly soon. I am trying to decide if i want to go with the xps 1530 or studio xps 16. I read various reviews of how hot the studio xps got and was wondering if it has gotten that problem fixed at all.

Any recommendations for a Studio 1555 laptop sleeve?
I was looking at this one from Amazon..
I want to buy a dell.com.au Studio 17 laptop. Problem is that they only offer Windows Vista and the software I want to run on the laptop is buggy and generally slower with Vista.
If I purchase Windows XP software speratly; will I be able to erase Vista and run XP?
I've done this with desktops before though i'm not sure if Dell has specific drivers/hardware only available in their factory install of Vista...
On another note, will RAID 0 still work with two SATA 200gb 7200rpm hardrives if I am able to get XP on it?
I'm worried that if I format the laptop I wont be able to install anything and have to get it repaired by sending it back to dell !
I have a 9cell on my Studio. On power saving mode, it really only last like 3 hours. I just want to compare what other's are getting on battery power.

I just updated my laptop to bios A09 and it froze part the way through the update, needless to say the worst happened and the laptop no longer powers up ,
after some googling i have found others who have had this problem and have also bricked there laptops.
Please beware when or if you use this update as it could happen to you.
The good news is Dell are picking it up tomorrow and are replacing the motherboard under warranty
This might be a dumb question but, can I transport my Dell studio 1737 laptop without the battery in it? Is the tiny battery inside enough to keep everything okay (not sure what 'everything' is).
I based the size on specs from the Dell site plus answers to my questions from a tech support guy via chat. He told me that my new 9 cell battery would only stick out the back of the laptop by 1". I specifically asked him if it would stick out the bottom, he said no.
I am having DELL Studio 1558 laptop. Recently, my laptop is getting overheating problem. Once I start it, gets overheated within 15 minutes causing my machine to respond slow and finally it gets stuck. Then I have to hard-shut down it and wait till it cools off.
Is it my laptop's cooling fan are not working ??

It is an automatic drive. My computer says the bluray drive is working right. Tried right clicking and ejecting and hitting the eject button. It is an automatic slot drive. Tried windows software to find problem and it couldn't work either. It worked just 10 mins before it happened. It is a windows 8 pro OS. HL-DT-ST DVDRWBD CA10N is the drive windows calls it.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI've had my Studio 1537 for about a year and once in awhile my laptop screen goesblank after my computer restarts or if I turn my laptop on. This happened to be about 10 times (the first time I spent about 3 days on the phone with a technian) already and I always have to reinstall Windows Vista to get my laptop working again. Today I found out that whenever my computer updates my video drive my screen will go blank, is this normal? What I can do to prevent this from happening again? My screen also goes blank when I install a video driver from the dell CD, but when I uninstalled it in safe mode and restart my laptop my screen is no longer blank.
View 1 Replies View Relatedwhen i turn on my laptop it tries to auto-fix a problem, then says it cant.Â
Then it either restarts or shuts down.
I dont know what the problem is and untill its solved i cant use my laptop.
I just bought a new Dell Studio 1535 and encountered the following problem:
I inserted my windows xp installation cd (as the laptop came with no OS). Windows setup began running, installing a multitude of drivers and files as it should until a message, something in the likes of "starting windows" (up to this point the screen is still the dos-style setup program). After a few seconds, a MS windows blue screen appears, stating that it encountered a fatal error.
I have a Studio 1558 laptop, about 3 years old and a couple of weeks ago it stopped working.
When I press the power button (both on battery and on mains supply) the power button lights up white and stays white and my backlit keyboard lights up. I can hear the fan whirring but thats all that happens. It will stay like this for ever until I press the power button and it then shuts down instantly. There is no BIOS screen and I get no POST beeps.
I've tried plugging it into my TV as an alternative monitor but there's still nothing. I've checked the hard drive and swapped it for a new one but it still makes no difference. I've checked the memory and that's fine. If i try to boot up with the memory removed I do get two beeps.
I have been having problem with my laptop, lately. For some strange reason, the hard drive would make a loud revving noise. I've even completely replaced it, and as I was installing the new OS, the NEW hard drive began to rev loudly!
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a Dell Studio XPS 13. Laptop is about 3-4 years old and everything was fine until yesterday. I was working on my laptop and suddenly my screen went white and the laptop shutdown after a few seconds (3-4) and it smelled like something burned down. I tried to power it on after few minutes and it went on, the hdd signal lamp was blinking but when the display should show the dell logo the computer shut's itself down.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI own a Dell studio 1555. When I first encountered the auto shut down problem, I ran the diagnostics and found my HDD is crashed. So I replaced with a new 1TB WD. My RAM is of 3GB. After couple of days, this problem started again. Â Majorly, I see this problem when I am trying to use internet in some browser.
One of the service center person told that it could be a CPU fan problem. He replaced it, but still the problem persists. Warranty period is expired for my laptop.
I returned from windows 8 to windows 7 64 on my Dell Studio 1749 because i had a Hibernation problem.Â
Now the problem is not solved, i've the same in my windows 7 64 (when the laptop hibernate, it freeze). I think it  is a bios error, and i want Reset it, but, if i try to  reinstall the last bios, installation program does not work and report: "the last bios is already installed).
Last Friday i received my new Studio 1749 with i3. As told by the documentation I put in the battery, put the power cable in the ac-adapter, pluged the AC-cable into the laptop and then pluged the ac-adapter into the wall outlet. I booted the laptop and once I was on the windows desktop had a look at the battery symbol. It showed that the laptop was connected to external power and that the battery was being charged.
I wen't away from the laptop to let it charge the battery for 12 hours as told by the documentation. After two hours i came back to have a look at the laptop and it was off. Curious I turned it on again. After booting up it showed the battery at 60% and the laptop running from battery. Yet the ac-adapter was connected to the laptop. I hadn't changed anything. I pluged the adapter cable in and out, but it wouldn't recognize that the was external power available. Turning the laptop off an on again didn't work either.
Now I feared for the battery. My guess is that at one point it started to run on battery power even though it was not charged for 12 hours. Then when the battery was depleted the laptop shut down. This might have permanently damaged the battery!
I guess as soon as the laptop was off the ac-adapter charged the battery again, and when I came in it was just at 60%.
So I turned it off removed the ac-adapter, removed the battery, put the battery back into the laptop pluged the ac-adapter back in and booted up again. Now it showed it was running from external power again. All fine. It charged the battery as well. Actually it charged the battery up to 99% and then out of nowhere the battery symbol changed and it was running from battery AGAIN! Even though it was still connected to the ac-adapter. This happens all the time. It is reproducable.
So I thought something might be wrong with the ac-adapter.
I powered down the laptop and removed the battery. Now with only the ac-adapter connected ,I tried to start the laptop. The control lights above the keyboard came on for 2 or 3 seconds and then the laptop turned off again. Trying to hit the power button again after that didn't give another reaction.
Conclusion: The laptop won't run just on external power with no battery in the battery bay.
I put in the battery again. AC-adapter still connected. Hit power. Laptop starts to boot. Then while booting I removed the battery. Laptop keeps on booting - finishes booting - runs nice and well at full speed not missing the battery - FOREVER.
So it won't boot with the battery removed, but it will run without it flawlessly??? Strange isn't it?
Next test: I put in the battery again while the laptop is running from mains. And now it charges the battery again until the point... you already know... it "forgets" that it is connected to the ac-adapter and starts running on battery power. So now I boldly removed the battery while the laptop was running. After all it was still connected to mains/ac-power.
