I have a first gen Inspiron 9100 that I have owned for a little over two years now and I am just now having some issues that are cause for confusion. Simply stated my video performance is going down the tubes with a quickness...
especially when playing games or watching video (screen flashes and fans on full blast in seconds).
My thoughts were that the video card is going bad but giving it some pause for thought I am not so sure if's that simple.
I have replaced both the Hard Drive and the Power Supply recently and I am wondering if increased heat or inadequate power might be the culprit... or the cause for damage to the video card.
Here's my setup for reference...
i have a dell inspiron 9100 with a 9800 pro 256 meg video card in it. i will be using it for days, then i will use it the screen goes black but i can still barley see things on it.
i have to cold boot and then its all and good until it happens again. i was wondering could my card be bad or do you think my lcd is bad for my monitor?
if its the card what card can i get to replace it because the 9800 256 card is hard to find. any help would be great.
My dad's laptop that he got about 5 years ago is a great desktop replacement. It's never caused any problems.
But my question is about the fan, it's really loud! And it's always on continuously. Is that normal? It's been like that since he got it. I've never heard a laptop so loud.
I blow into the fans regularly but is there something else I can do to get rid of the noise, or is it normal?
I have a dell Inspiron 9100 notebook .. with Pentium 4 HT Processor on it (Hyper threading). Now it looks like the processor wont work. everything else seem to be fine in the system, except the processor... Its a 478 socket type mother board .....
The date-time is not holding which indicates replace the 'coin cell' or BIOS battery. I have looked online and everywhere says it is under the keyboard but I HAVE THE KEYBOARD OFF AND I DONT SEE IT. Where the bios battery on the Dell inspirion 9100 is located?
I want to change my 9100's CPU to a Northwood...(want to see if it will make it a bit quieter....but which one do I get? There's so many different Core Stepping versions....Does it have to be a 3.0C? or will any work?
I've been dealing with this flakey machine for some time. It used to run whenever it wanted, but it had horrible USB performance when it did get to Windows (worked great otherwise). So Im pretty sure it just needs a new mobo, since it finally stopped working. For the past few months the machine would not even get past the Dell screen, no ability to even enter the bios. I did all the normal stuff....swapped ram, HD, optical drive, etc., no luck so I just let it sit for months and tick me off.
So yesterday, just to annoy myself I turned it on. I got in the bios, changed to "restore defaults" state and rebooted. No luck booting up! Tried it this morning and it booted all the way to the Windows driver load screen and did the BSOD. Tried again....no boot.
So all that to ask this. I live in Phoenix and we just had lows in the low 40s (freezing my butt off) My dead laptop suddenly is better than it was this summer, but still not operational. Could this be a temp. thing? I have not pulled the CPU or checked it's thermal pad/ grease. I did replace the bios battery awhile back. Am I just grasping at straws? I do have the svc manual but dont really want to waste anymore time on the POS.
Dell will never get another dime from me. India quoted $500.00 to replace the mobo.
I've been trying to get to the bottom of why this notebook won't power up at all[url].
Here's what's happening:
Got the notebook from a friend, came with no power adapter and no battery. I tried substituting a known good adapter from another laptop, same 19V, a bit less power (90W). I've done this before on other laptops and they'll crank up OK, even if they require a bit more than the adapter is rated for, only for a brief test, as the adapter run hot if left for a long time.
Anyway, when the adapter is plugged in, all the top panel buttons light up for just a moment, then go off, except the power button remains on, and the front lip Power and Plugged In icons stay on. Pressing the power button does nothing, nada, zilch. No fans, hard drive spin-up, blank screen, absolute death silence. The same adapter (non-HP) runs other laptops just fine.
I hate to give up on this one, it's a great older notebook, HUGE screen, two 1 GB sticks on-board, 160 GB hdd, not beat up. But I don't want to dump a bunch of money on it or throw parts at it unless I'm sure of the problem, and if it's worth fixing. I read through HP's troubleshooter section, it doesn't cover this situation or this notebook. Whaddya' think? To get it going, I MAY need a new power adapter, but I'm thinking it's not at fault (eb-Y generic) and a battery. If it turns out to be a zorched mobo, then I'll probably just end up (sob!) scrapping it and pull the RAM sticks and hdd to donate to another machine.
i've had this DV6000t (or dv6500) for quite some time. I believe i've had it since 2007, but really started using it a lot from 2009, running almost 24/7.
Here's the situation: I was playing a bit of Starcraft 2, and decided it would be fun to drop a dozen Terrain Ghost Nukes in an area. For those familiar with the game, you may notice a lot of lag when you do that. I didn't know it would lag like that until my computer abruptly shut off on me. Now nothing lights up except for the AC jack. I checked the vents, HDD, RAM, and other spots that may have heated up a lot, but nothing was really running hot. I'm familiar with how hot my laptop can be; the laptop was just 'warm' right after shutdown.
My guess is that I either: -Overheated the laptop, which is what anyone would probably expect since HP Pavilions are well known for this, or... -I may have had a power surge while I was playing.
So, I investigated my opening up my laptop to see if there were any physical damages.
It's hard to see with the blurry picture, but I actually think the chips didn't burn out. But i'm no expert with fried chips......
Yesterday, I finished my work and hibernated my computer. When I came back, I could not turn on the computer. It goes automatically to a black screen and after 15 seconds I hear beeping noises. It's one long beep followed by 2 quickly beeps. Rebooting just repeats this process.
I went to the HP troubleshooting page and found this from my symptoms

It tells me that 3 beeps mean module problems. So i ended up testing both my memory sticks in a different laptop and they were fine. And I tested both individual pavilion memory slots, and still got the same 3 beep black screen on both. iif i was to have no memory sticks in, i still get a black screen but a different set of beeping noises, not sure if a laptop can run without memory sticks, but i figured i check)
Has anyone had a similar beeping noise black screen problem at startup?
My Dell XPS 9100 laptop just went stone dead, no lights, charger or otherwise and happened while I was not looking. With no power apparent from battery or AC charger, no other indicators are known.
I need to replace my lcd it has large horizontal line/lines that run across it. When I remove it from the plastic, and run my fingers down the edges it will correct itself temporarily. I have found a possible LCD from a inspiron 9100 but with out purchasing it I wont know if it will work. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
It's me and my crazy mods again After fitting second SSD to my Vaio Z (instead of optical drive), i got hold of Intel's X9100 ES from E-Bay...

So, after a hour or so of fitting everything in (mostly spent on opening the Z) it was ready for testing.
First results? Not very nice - X9100 ES I got has lowest VID of 1.0V (, I should have asked the seller for this before) Also, 3.0 GHz VID is outrageously high (1.225V) - so, during the first tests it was shown that almost immediately the CPU resorts to throttling (temp. gets to 105C) - completely useless .....
I have tried to put it in but there is a 1/4 in pin in the way. Is there a way to remove with out any harm. My Inspiron 9400 video card is having problems.

Guide to Switching your Inspiron 9300/M170 WUXGA into the Inspiron 9400/M1710:
You can't simply replace the display screens. The instructions below must be followed for your screen to work properly.
Required Materials: - Small Phillips (I used #0 Phillips) - Either 2 monitors (9400 and 9300) or part #YPNL-N017B (Google the # to buy it).
Step 1: Remove the display assembly. Dell has an excellent guide for this on their website. [url] Click on Display)
Step 2: Remove the LCD Bezel (the gray trim around the screen). This requires removing the screws under the circular pads. I used a small flathead to pry open the bezel.
Step 3: Remove the 8 screws around the sides of the LCD. This will make it so your screen can be taken out. Do not worry about any screws on the top, they are for other things.
Step 4: At the bottom of the screen, there is a green circuit board. On the left side, you will see a screw holding the wire down. Remove this.
Step 5: Remove the LCD screen from the case.
Step 6: Look at the bottom circuit board again. This is the board we need to swap! Disconnect the 2 connections on the board. There should be on on the bottom and one on the side that is white.
Step 7: There will be 3 silver screws holding the circuit to the screen. Remove these screws. Note: This requires a very small phillips. I used a #0 Phillips to do the trick.
Step 8: Repeat steps 1-7 for your other monitor OR if you don't have another monitor...you will need to buy an inverter chip. The mfg # is YPNL-N017B. If you google that number, you should find a bunch of sites willing to sell it.
Step 9: Simply swap the bottom circuit boards between monitors or insert the new one that you bought.
Step 10: Follow steps 1-7 in reverse to reconnect everything back up! Before screwing everything back up. I suggest you plug it in first to test it out.
Congratulations. Your WUXGA LCD will now work properly on the Inspiron 9400. For anyone wondering, you MUST replace the bottom circuit board or the brightness controls will not work. You brightness will be stuck at the lowest setting and nearly impossible to see.
I am looking into replacing my old Dell Inspiron 6400, as it has been excellent -I think I should buy another Dell!
I am looking at the new Inspiron 15, which has a 15.6" display.
Can anyone tell me whether the actual laptop itself is bigger or smaller than my current 6400? I am interested in knowing width.
I see a lot of dead space on my 6400, and hopefully Dell realized this, and instead of making another 15.4" with dead space, they made use of this and gave a better display!
"Noise The Inspiron 15 is fairly quiet, though at times the fans did get a bit noisy. Basically you wont hear this notebook at all in an environment with ambient noise, but if youre in a library like quiet environment you might bother those nearby with some fan noise."
I am in the process of buying the new Dell Inspiron 15. I just want to know if i have made the right choice. It seems to be a really good laptop and i have seen some very positive comments within some review's on Youtube.
I got a phone status update a couple of days ago that said it was supposed to ship by Nov 5th (tomorrow). Normally when I order stuff from Dell, it shows up a lot sooner, but I guess the 11z is a hot item so it's taking longer.
I ordered mine pretty decked out... I got the dual-core Pentium CPU, 320 gig hard drive, Wireless N card, etc. I'll probably still stick a 500 gig drive in it and use the 320 as an external.
I recently looked to purchase another hard drive for my wifes inspiron 17 1720 and found that the hard drive came without a connector so some sort, it appears the dell needs a special connector to connect to the sata hdd. i looked at the 1st hdd and it has this connector, i contact dell and they didnt know what i was talking about
My Dell Inspiron has a problem, everytime i connect the power supply to charge it while its on the monitor will completely black out on me... Has anyone had or heard of this problem before?
