Dell :: Upgrade From CCFL To LED LCD Screen (M1330)
Mar 9, 2010
I like repairing laptops as a hobby. I recently bought a M1330 laptop without a screen and with a small video card problem. The laptop still worked on external screen, but showed some lines.
This was due to the NVidia gpu problem. I managed to fix it by using a hot air soldering station(Youtube video). To decrease the chance that it arrises again, I also did the copper mod(description). This meant that I could finally use the laptop for my work if I could just install a LCD screen.
Since I have spend quite some time on repairing the laptop already, I decided to invest some additional money to upgrade from a CCFL to a LED backlit LCD. I ordered a new cover, screen and LED LCD cable.
When I assembled all the parts, everything fits perfectly .....

I have an XPS M1330 purchased about 2 years ago.
The screen went extremely dim permanently one day when the battery reached its near absolute low. For some reason the screen came back to a brightly lit life after a system restore. The same problem occurred again and sadly after sitting on it a few weeks I did not have a restore point old enough to troubleshoot with the same solution.
Now I'm not sure if system restore really had anything to do with the monitor crapping out because I've never heard of such a scenario, but I'm just going to throw it out there on the off chance that it does .....

I'm looking to buy a M1530 LED WXGA+ screen (1440x900). I currently have the stock 1280x800 CCFL. I have some question that I'm hoping some of you would be able to answer:
Will the LED screen fit normally within the stock CCFL backing/bezel?
I'm looking at screen descriptions, for the LED's I don't see "inverters" listed as included but in some, though not all CCFL have it mentioned in the description, is this something that's no longer required? or is it built into the panel?
What is a good price for these panels? The panel I'm looking at is a Glossy 1440x900 LED screen for $205CAD with shipping and taxes included. Good price? bad? Is it possible to get it cheaper?
Concerning batterylife, I have a 9cell and am averaging of 3.5-4hrs of usage with wifi on and screen in one level just before full brightness on Power save mode. Will I see a very noticable increase in battery life? I keep hearing people spout "30%" are there any actual tests?

So dell replaced my m1330 with a SXPS 1340, but they did not have any LED ones available, so they sent a CCFL.
They agreed to swap it with the WLED screen. My question is, is the casing different for the CCFL and WLED like it is on the m1330? I know the LED casing is thinner on the m1330.

My current configuration is the following:
CPU: T7500
RAM: 2GB
Is it worth upgrading to T9500 and 4GB of RAM?
Should I do it through Dell or by my own? I know that doing it by my own is much cheaper but what's happening with the guarantee? Moreover, will I need a new charger? How much does it cost approximately?
Is there anything else that I should take into account?

I currently have 3gb of Corsair Ram(2gb+1gb) on a M1330, 2.2ghz, 120gb hdd, with Win 7.
I know Vista only recognized 3.2gb RAM with video ram/system resources eating some ram. Does Win 7 recognize the full 4gb?
I am trying to maximize performance for photo editing and would like to know if I should bother upping the memory to 4gb. I heard putting in same RAM chips(2gbx2gb) will allow dual-channel performance. Is the speed difference using dual-channel noticeable?

i'm new to these forums and know VERY LITTLE about computers. i bought my laptop 2 years ago and cheaped out on the processor to save some cash.
i want to upgrade the processor now because it is a little slow for my liking plus i want to be able to play some newer video games like BC2 and MW2.
my current processor is an Intel Core 2 Duo CPU T7100 @ 1.80GHz
I dont know too much about computers like I said but im pretty sure I want one that can run at at least 2.4GHz and read that the T8300 ran at 2.4GHz in a thread but that thread was about 3 years old XD.
edit: found an Intel Core 2 Duo CPU T8600 @ 2.4GHz for $210. is that a good deal?

I currently own an M1330 with the Intel 950 graphics (meh.) I want Nvidia graphics. I know that this cannot be done via the motherboard that is currently installed. I have located a few resellers of a motherboard with an 8400M GS GPU. I am well-enough versed to install this hardware in my system as I have disassembled this beast once already to upgrade my CPU.
Question 1: Is there any motherboard that contains a higher level GPU than the 8400 GS for the M1330? I've heard rumors or maybe seen references to a GT GPU?
Question 2: Is this upgrade a simple drop in or are there other considerations to pay attention too? example: will a new motherboard necessitate a different tray/heatsink or combination thereof?
Question 3: Are the connections on the Nvidia GPU MoBo the same and in the same location as in the Intel GPU MoBo?
Any other input I may not be considering would be most helpful. I am going to be away from home for a bit and my laptop will do duty as TV Machine /Movie Machine/Company of Heroes Machine. The Intel GPU simply does not make the cut for even full screen DVD content (without chopiness.)

I know some folks have put a T9300 in their m1330, but the screenshots I've seen show the bios incorrectly detecting the CPU speed (A06 I believe). I want to know if the new A07 bios has corrected this issue, but I never saw any followup. Can anyone who has done this upgrade confirm/deny if A07 fixed the detection issue?

I purchased my M1330 over a year ago, with an internal 120gb hard drive.
I just purchased the HITACHI Travelstar 7K320 from NewEgg, since I'd like a both faster and larger drive.
However, I am curious about the following:
Right now, my hard drive is flush with the side of my laptop. It has a black trim on the side that is the reason for the flush side. It came this way from Dell. However, in purchasing the new hard drive, what can I do to make the side flush again, as well as the hard drive secure (dust, falling out, etc)? Can dell provide the part (side cover)?
For your reference, you can notice the hard drive cover in this photo (far right of the laptop):

I have been pondering whether my Studio 1537 came with a LED backlit screen since Dell didn't include a Centrino 2 sticker although all of my laptop hardware meets the req. for Centrino 2. Who knew what else Dell could pull?
I decided to fire up my Studio 1537, Inspiron E1505, and Mini 9 to do a comparison with the LCD backlight on full power with Notepad maximized (lots of white).
The E1505's LCD was about a year old and is CCFL. The Mini 9 and Studio 15 are brand new and both were advertised to have LED backlighting.
The E1505 looked dim and yellow compared to the Studio 15's CRISP white color, while the Mini 9 had an almost purple tint to the white screen. I work with white light a lot and can say the E1505's LG CCFL was around 4000-4300K for color temperature while the Studio 15 was more around 5800K and the Mini 9 at 6200K or slightly higher.
The problem with white LED's is that they have a shorter lifespan (~20,000 hours) compared to red, blue, and green (usually 100,000 hours). This translates to noticeable decrease in white light output after 2.3 years of non-stop 24/7 usage.
Another major difference I observed is that the CCFL at max brightness is equivalent to the LEDs at about 40-50% brightness!

I recently had my screen replaced by dell dispatch for my studio XPS 1340. My hinges were loose, instead of replacing just the hinges dell dispatch had replaced the whole screen. My question is can you tell a difference between CCFL and LED. My specs is LED I just want to make sure the technician, replace with the right screen. Is LED thinner than CCFL if so what is the technical spec of thickness between the two. Is there a way to check if you have a 1.3 or 2.0 webcam.

There was a discussion on this subject before but I can't find it. Currently I own XPS 1330 with nVidia GPU and LED screen. My GPU died a while ago, was replaced.
After that I applied copper mod. But it will die some time in future again. So I'm thinking to replace my mobo with one that has integrated GPU.

A month ago I received my new laptop from Dell. After a short inspection I discovered that instead of 2 HDDs only one was appearing in device manager.
After a bios check that confirmed that only one HDD was installed I called Dell Support. The person allowed me to open the laptop and to my surprise there were 2 HDDs but one of them was not fixed with screws and it was able to move freely inside.
Those from Dell decided to replace my laptop and one week later I received a new one .....

I have an M1330 with LED and love the display. I came across such a good deal for a refurb Studio XPS 13 that i could not pass it up - (P8800, 4GB, 500GB 7200rpm, 512MB N10M-GS,
Wireless 1510, Bluetooth 370 for $875 shipped). Only problem is that it has a CCFL screen instead of LED.
Will the difference be really noticeable? Am i going to regret it?

I need to replace the LCD on my M1330, I have never replaced an LCD panel in a laptop before but upon researching it seems it should be simple enough..
I currently have a Chi Mei (CMO1309) but upon researching replacement screens on this site, have decided to purchase the Samsung panel part code (tm107)
My question is, will the inverter I currently have work for the new panel?

I got a XPS m1330 with an LED screen. On low brightness, I can see dark spots across the bottom of the screen.
They are usually visible on a white background, like in "My Computer" window. So, I had my screen replaced and today the tech came out and put in a new LED. I am still having the same issue, so I am wondering if they are all like this.

I bought myself a Dell xps m1330 when I was in Japan last year and it's been rather troublesome. (I had to replace the hard drive.)
The built in monitor has recently died much to my disdain. I have a spare monitor lying in my room that would work. The thing is that when I start my laptop,
I can't get the display to transfer over to my old monitor. Is there a certain key combination I can press on startup to make the display go over? My nvidea control panel has the ability to choose a preferred monitor but I can't see to get to it..

I've just noticed a dark line has appeared on my M1330 led screen- right across the top.... it goes right across the screen and is about 3mm thick.
You need to look right at the top (above the XPS M1330 text). It's there all the time! What can I do?

So I received a friend's XPS M1330. Who got it back from dell for motherboard replacement (gfx card problem).
It was working great till one day he boot it up and the screen had nothing on it. The laptop runs with an external display connected. The warranty expired nearly a month ago =/
How do I know if the screen is completely dead, or that the inverter or backlight died. If the screen is still alive can i simply replace the inverter or backlight? How do i test that the screen is fully dead?
