Dell :: Vostro 1310 Fan Noise
Apr 9, 2009
I recently purcahsed a vostro 1310 laptop. It's been absolutely great, except for one thing: the fan is incredibly annoying.
Once the processor reaches 45 degrees celsius, the fan kicks in, lowers it to 40, and then turns off. A few minutes later, the computer will go up to 45, and the fan will kick in again; so it goes through this loop of turning on and off, which is incredibly annoying.
Doing some more research, I've found that other people have also had this 'problem'. Undervolting and switching to powersaving mode solved the problem a bit, but once it hits 45, I still have the same problem.

im not sure if i want a graphic card in it, as it would just eat battery life and i would get nothing much out of it, since i have no plans in gaming with it.
i will be, however massively watching movies, and streaming movies (99.9% of the web, not dvd player) would that need a dedicated graphic card?
i would also like to know which are the best in terms of :
price, screen quality, build quality, weight, which ones have the same keyboard,current known issues, and are they any rumors or known news of any updates of any of these models in the next 6 months worth waiting for?
ive also bought a m1330 a few months back, but since i had some issues with school, i had to return it and delay my purchase to this year.
the laptop was getting extremely hot, like not even possible to put on my lap kind-of hot. is that issue fixed?

I am at that horrible stage of deciding on a new laptop after my brilliant yet flawed ibook decided to break, signaling the end of my relationship with anything mac.
I need a compact notebook for traveling (2 year overland trip starting in October - africa/mid east/asia). i have been looking at several 12-13" notebooks and i have come across the Dell.
While it is listed under the business market i think it might suit my needs. Primeraly i need to use photoshop and lightroom to manage my photography workflow,
write reports in word, browse the web wirelessly and (last but not least) play football manager while im sitting on trains and buses!
It seems that i can spec the dell with a T8100 dual core 2 processer (2.16 Ghz), 3mb cache, Nvidia video card, 3GB RAM and a 6 cell for around £550, which is pretty good considering the spec.
However coming from mac i really need some advice into whether or not this processing speed will be enough for me as i am not up to speed, i know that the centrino chips are better but with a sub £550 buget im just looking for the best i can get and i like the service that Dell gave my parents when they got a desktop from them

I am looking for a second small laptop. I was thinking netbook but now consider 13'. I noticed that the Vostro 1310 is $599 with very decent spec and Inspiron and XPS 13 are a few hundred more expensive.
I guess that's because the Vostro uses Morem CPU. If I go to Outlet, I can grab a Vostro 1310 for $4xx. If there is a coupon going on, the deal is even sweeter.
I know XPS 1310 has much better build quality but how about Vostro 1310 vs Inspiron 13, if I don't care about CPU difference?

I made a previous fan about the issue I had with Dell's managment of the fan settings. In an attempt to combat this, I thought I'd try installing a previous BIOS to see if it fixes the problem (perhaps there was an alternative fan managment setup).

note: my process below is for Australia where we do not have access to Microsoft's online AnyTime Upgrade for Windows products...
I'm in the process of purchasing a Dell Vostro 1310 on behalf of a family member who's just started University (College)
I've configured the one we want into a shopping cart at the Dell Store. However, it only comes with Vista Home BASIC included. I can upgrade it via Dell to Business or Ultimate for a further $237. I would rather have Home PREMIUM but Dell does not offer that for Vostro as it's a "business" system. That's fine. But Home Basic is not suitable.
Here is what I'm planning and I want to run it past the experts here before going ahead.
* Purchase the Vostro 1310 from Dell with HOME BASIC included in the price.
* Purchase ULTIMATE UPGRADE for $80 from MS via offer for ADDITIONAL PRODUCTS at the itsnotcheating.com.au site.
* Take delivery of the laptop from Dell with HOME BASIC pre-installed
* Use the ULTIMATE UPGRADE to do an in-place upgrade of the the pre-installed Vista HOME BASIC to ULTIMATE...

I think there are many others' complains about the fan noise. When in a quiet night the fan's suddenly noise really hurts me. Finally I noticed that it is the PCH diode that trigger the fan. when the temperature of PCH goes over 65 C, the fan starts running at full speed while CPU is around 50 C and lower. So will the next bios solve this problem? just make fan starting running at 65 C or lower with a  very slow rpm to just cool down the PCH, rather than a instant full speed running at 70C. And I also want to ask that why the PCH is so hot, there is no any cooling part on it?
I also have to complain the HDD overheating. 42-45C is a normal temperature now while my 5 years old Inspiron 1520 is normally 35-37 C. the place for the HDD is not perfect. It avoids the feeling of vibration when putting HDD down your wrist, but the CPU heat around it becomes a new problem. I think it is unsolvable. And the workmanship of DELL is getting worse, since my new Vostro 3560 has many small flaws...

I plan to get a Dell Studio Slim/Vostro 220 Slim. At first I wanted a Dell Studio Hybrid, but since I am using this computer for streaming live TV I can't add in a tv tuner to that and is out of the race.
Therefore the Studio Slim/Vostro 220 seem like the best small dell computer that I can use as a media center PC (streaming movies, pictures, live TV all from WMC/tv tuner). Does anyone know how is the noise level is? Can it be heard? Watching movies? Fan noise?
The noise of the system is a deal breaker/deal maker for me so the more detail anyone can give the better

I bought a Vostro 1500. It has been fine and I got XP instead of Vista. 2GB of RAM.
It boots up fine with quick Dell screen, black XP start up screen with thermometer line at bottom, then light blue XP screen then Vostro.
Before the destop icons show up next after Vostro and I am all set. Now it stops at Vostro.
I can get to programs using task manager file open and browse. Not very convenient.

I know the Vostro 3300 just came out.
For those who own the V13. Do you miss having HDMI? How's the build quality on the V13? And with the Vostro 3300 out now, the Vostro 3300 would be a better buy, no?
Any differences that I should take note of?

I find the noise of the fans of my M6400 quite disturbing.
It is certainly much louder than the noise from my M6300 (also a 17" high performance laptop), or my former D810
The fans kick in quite often after short periods of being off.
Is there a way to slow down the fans or have them off for longer?
Is there a compatible fan in the market that is quieter?

I just got a Dell Studio 15 from the Dell outlet and while it's a great laptop I am wondering about the fan. It runs constantly and you can definitely hear it the whole time.
When I opened the media player it revved up a little but I wasn't even playing a video. Is this fan noise and constantly running fan normal for the Dell Studio 15?
I love the laptop but I think it is louder than usual and find it odd that the fan runs all the time. The bios installed is A05.
I have the model with an ATI video card if that makes any difference.

Whenever I am using my M1530 for simple tasks, such as surfing the web or checking my email, my fan is always running. It isn't running loud but it is audible 20 or so feet away. Hardware monitor places the CPU temperature at 45C and the GPU at 62C. According to task manager my CPU useage is right around 10%. Is this normal?

I just recently purchased a Dell Studio 17. I am very happy with my purchase, however, I have started to notice a high pitched whining noise sometimes when I have it plugged in for charging.
If I disconnect the charger from the laptop, the noise goes away and sometimes it goes away on its own..

I just got my M1530 a couple of days ago and I have a few concerns and I wondered if you would be kind enough to comment on.
This is my spec:
XPS M1530 CORE 2 DUO T9300 2.50GHz,800,6MDisplay 15.4" UltraSharp Widescreen WSXGA+ (1680x1050) TFT with TrueLifeMemory Dual Channel 4.0GB (2x2048) 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAMHard Drive: 320GB Free Fall Sensor (7200RPM)8xDVD+/-RW Slim Slot-Load Drive,
including SWBattery XPS Primary 6-cell 56WHr Li-IonGraphics Card 256MB NVIDIA GeForce Go 8600M GTIntegrated Sound Blaster Audigy ADVANCED HD Audio
Firstly, I notice that my hard drive (I assume the hard drive is located on the left palmrest side) always appears to be spinning loudly enough for me to notice. Is this normal? It also makes weird clicky noises intermittently and I have no idea why.
The CPU fan seems to be on an awful lot. I have a Gateway MT6821 and the fan only comes on under heavy load, with the dell it's on almost all the time.
Finally, build quality - I have noticed that the trim that sits around the LCD panel is about 2-3mm away from the screen on the left side. Is this acceptable or should I return and ask for a replacement laptop?

I noticed quite a bit of noise on my 1340. This is the 2MP camera and I had used recently a M1330 with 2MP and I do not remember any noise.
Is this normal for noise on a 2MP camera on 1340?
I have attached a picture where I covered the lens so you can see the noise on the black background.
Also what does it take to change the camera? Is it embeded with the scree and is the screen also changed with it?

The fan starts after a few minutes when the machine has booted. The fan will start even if I only run simple HTML-webpages etc. Afterwards it never stops but keeps running relatively fast (and noisy).
My current config is:
* P8600(2.40,1066MHz,3MB)
* NVIDIA Quadro NVS 160M
* 250GB serial ATA HDD 7200RPM (Free Fall Sensor) (Seagate ST9250421ASG)
* Intel WiFi Link 5300 (802.11 a/b/g/n 3X3) 1/2 MiniCard
* Dell Wireless 370 Bluetooth
* Primary 6-cell 54W/HR LI-ION
* 15.4in Wide Screen WXGA+ (1440x900) with LED backlit
* Windows Vista Ultimate to XP Pro SP3 Downgrade SP1 with XP SP3
(Running XP currently on the machine)
Since I don't play games much and generally don't run 3D-software it was maybe a mistake to buy the E6500 with the dedicated NVIDIA-card, but I figured it was a nice feature to have in the future if I needed it.
I've tried various software to reduce the fan noise without much luck. Currently I'm considering returning the E6500 for a downgraded version without the NVIDIA-card, a lower clocked CPU and a slower HDD.
I'm considering:
* P8400(2.26,1066MHz,3MB)
* 250GB serial ATA HDD 5400RPM
* Mobile Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator X4500HD
1) Does anyone for sure know if the fan will run slower or maybe not at all if the E6500 is equiped with the Intel X4500HD instead of the Quadro NVS 160M when I surf webpages etc. and don't run GPU-intense software?
2) Will the fan run slower with a 2.26 GHz P8400 instead of a 2.40 GHz P8600?
3) Will a 5200 RPM HDD generally generate less heat in the system vs. a 7200 RPM HDD? (and hence generate less fan noise?)
4) I would really like to know how the BIOS determines how fast the fan should run? Is it dertermined from the overall system-temperature? The CPU-temp? or the GPU-temp? HDD-temp? Maybe an average of these?
Right now the fan has run relatively fast (docked) for about an hour. According to PC Wizard 2008 the temperatures are:
- ACPI Thermal Zone: 31.5 Celcius
- Core 1: 25 C
- Core 2: 26 C
- GPU: 49 C
- HDD: 38 C
- Processor(s) activity: 1-3%
I have the fan-noise issue whenever the machine is docked or not. I like the E-port Plus very much, a digital S/PDIF-audio out would have been nice though. I hope I can use the E-port Plus with the integrated Intel X4500HD if I decide to downgrade. Dual-view is a must for me.
5) I'm not sure if DELL at all will exchange my E6500 for a downgraded version. Does anyone have experience returning DELLs when asking for a downgrade? My argument is to much noise from the fan to my taste, but I don't think DELL will buy this if there's no problem with the machine, so I probably will have to pay for the return of the first machine as well as freight for the new machine. It's quite expensive here in Denmark. Returns cost about $125 and Dell will pick up the machine, the only way to return here afaik. I have 3 year International Next Business Day On-site Response, but probably of not much use if the machine isn't broken or don't need repair.
I nice side-effect from downgrading to a slower system though, will be longer battery-life, but my ultimate goal is less noise.
