Dell Inspiron M501R :: No Longer To Boot Up Its Shows Black Screen And Beeps 7 Times
Mar 10, 2013My Dell Inspiron M501R will no longer boot up - its shows a black screen and repeatedly beeps 7 times. I understand this means the mother board has failed. The service tag is <ADMIN NOTE: Service tag removed per privacy policy> - its waranty has recently expired.
Interestingly, if you google "Inspiron M501R" google suggests "Inspiron M501R 7 beeps". So I'm guessing this laptop has been designed to fail soon after the waranty expires.
I have written a letter to BBC Watchdog asking how long a laptop can be "expected" to last and whether this would be covered by the UK Sale of Goods Act.

Feb 18, 2013I have a Dell Vostro 1500 which sometimes ,doesn’t want to boot.
I was using Windows 7,I have changed it to XP ,and it’s happening the same thing.
If I want to restart it , I’m getting a black screen(without any beep) , and when I'm turning it on ,I must press 20-60 times on power button and maybe it will work.
In the same time ,I can keep it on,3 4 days ,without any problem.
I discovered that, when I want to turn it on (forced),if I press hard in the middle of the keyboard ,around keys "y /u/i/k/j/h" ,I hear a small sound, and after this its booting.

Sep 14, 2009extensa 7220 laptop.
When turned on it goes past the Acer logo screen then a blinking cursor shows at top left of a black screen & what I can only describe as either a very loud continuous beep or audible alarm sounds for up to 3/4 mins then the pc will continue to boot into Vista & work normally.
I've run utilities like HDtune to check the hard disk - it says its fine, I'm going to run memtest for the memory, I've read about the phoenix bios codes but it doesn;t sound like any of the sequences.
Lappy is 1yr old in three days time :-(
Dell Vostro 3360 :: Can't Boot From SSD
Feb 9, 2013I got a new Vostro 3360 with the i7, 8GB of RAM, a 500GB 5400 RPM HDD and a 32GB mSata SSD drive which was used to cache the HDD with the Intel Smart Response Technology. Unfortunately, the computer also came with Windows 8, which is useless for me, so I'm trying to install Ubuntu 12.04 on it.
Now, I managed to overcome many issues so far; I got the Secure Boot turned off, unchained the HDD and the SSD, turned the raid flag off for both, and managed to repartition the SSD so that I could install the Ubuntu system on it. However, I can't see to be able to boot from the ssd no matter what I do. It shows in the BIOS as present, but I don't have it as a boot option. I tried installing the system and keeping the GRUB bootloader on the HDD, that didn't work either.
This is supposed to be my new work computer and trying to get the installation to work is eating up a lot of time...

When i turned it on again, i saw a message about a failure shutting down the OS. And now i can't start it because it can't fin Operating System. How can i restore it to factory settings?

Nov 4, 2012I installed Windows 8 on my Vostro 3560 and even installing the new driver for Win8 video card AMD HD 7670 Randeon the note presents several bugs this board, such as:* apps made for Win8 (with technology underground) not roam well with AMD board, where they are fighting or simply leave the slow note.* The computer now does not go into an idle state automatically after the time set in the Power Options, due to various errors that prevent this driver please note the suspended state.* The fingerprint reader no longer works at the log on screen or lock Windows 8. The reader only works when I'm on the desktop or on the start screen, also due to a problem with the video card drivers because it is causing several incompatiblidades system.All these mistakes I vii event log windows.Have I contacted AMD who said that Dell is to update the driver for the notebook has two cards (intel and AMD) and fits Dell make changes and corrections.And then Dell??

- I tried to do a "recover / estore" but there was nothing in the list - I already installed the laptop also installed many programs (e.g: office, winscp, irfanview etc.)
- I tried to go through the "help center" on the laptop and same issue - nothing, all empty

Feb 19, 2013I got a brand new VOSTRO 3660 with x3 USB 3.0, and since it has no CD/DVD my only option of creating Factory Recovery Image with DataSafe is thrught USB
which is USB 3.0.
I have done some digging before posting, and I understood that I had to enter to the bios and change USB debug Mode to Enable in order to make it work as USB 2.0 (Disable USB 3.0 functionality to install Windows 7 from a USB Flash Drive).
thing is that I tried that several thing to recover the windows 7, deleted the usb flash drive and made several copies and in the end of it I always get to a screen which tells me that "if you are trying to restore your pc from usb 3.0 ................change to a different usb port " .

Apr 8, 2013I have strange quirks with caps led indicator and brightness keys: they work just after power on, in grub menu but they cease to work after operation system boots to graphical environment.
Caps lock itself is working fine: just indicator don't light up. Brightness control itself is working also: I can configure brightness if I map other buttons. Just function keys don't work. I've tested it on opensuse 12.3 kde and gnome running 3.7 kernel: both are affected. Opensuse 12.2 with previous kernel didn't have such quirks. What causes this quirks.

1. Ensure Sata mode is set to RAID in BIOS or in some systems Intel Smart Response Technology
2. Go to RAID BIOS(Use Ctrl+I) and disable accelerate option for SSD (Only if HDDs are not detected while OSRI)
My raid setting is ISRT, but I can't enter the raid bios, cause CTRL+ I does nothing. I also tried CTRL + R and G but neither worked. How to reinstall the OS?

Mar 19, 2013I've created a MSDOS boot disk on a USB thumb drive for a legacy application. After selecting F12 and booting from the USB thumb drive, the bootup stops or freezes. I'll power off the machine, boot back into windows, and try to read the USB drive. One of two things happen,
A. the drive is corrupted with gobbeldy characters or won recognize at all, or
B. files will be deleted, autoexec.bat, config.sys, command.com
There is no rhyme or reason, I've replicated this 20 times and got different results. I've used 5 different drives, two of which are brand new. Sometimes the laptop will freeze with a solid loud beep. I just was able to find an identical 3700 to test, and the same things are happening.
I've been able to boot this on over 20 different laptops, all core 2 duos, but moving to the core i3 on this 3700, this happens. Unfortunately I have no other newer machine to test this on, although it booted from a 3 month old compaq with an AMD chipset.
I've disabled/enabled the execution bit in bios, other than that what's causing this, I've never seen a BIOS do anything like this before.

Mar 21, 2010I'm having this problem at the moment where *sometimes* the screen does not come on during bootup. "The lights are on, yet no-one is home".
If I'm lucky I will see the Dell splash screen and then it goes black but most of the time I get nothing. Strange thing is that the lights are on for the buttons (volume, play, etc) but the screen is not.
I know its not a Windows problem, because I can here the Windows startup sound being played. Its almost like the signal to turn the screen on is not working.

Nov 7, 2009I received my Win 7 DVD, did a fresh install and it detected my webcam. However my webcam no longer works in either skype or MSN.
Skype reports the error 'cannot capture video, camera may already be in use' MSN returns the error 'cannot connect to webcam. Close any programs that may be using your webcam and chose setup audio/video'
The only thing I can see 'blocking' these apps is the Dell Webcam Console. I can't see any way to uninstall just the console, I think it comes bundled with the default windows 7 driver. I can see the path is

I have changed the setting 'automatically launch webcam console when video is played' but still no joy. Tried uninstalling and installing old drivers but no luck either.

Jan 8, 2010I have Inspiron 9300. Unfortunately, my geforce 6800 died and I bought as a replacement x300 which was installed by a laptop repair service (they fixed other thins too.
It was due to power surge). Everything works but when I boot up the computer or when the display is set to be turned off in the power settings in Windows instead of being actually turned off the display is on and is all white.
Also brightness regulation does not work via Fn +arrows keys and is set to maximum and the white color is so intense that I get a headache after a couple of hours staring at the screen.
