Dell :: XP Or Vista For Gaming
Feb 20, 2008
Which operating system will give me the BEST performance for gaming.
I do not want opinions, I want hard proof please. Please show me some before and after results of benchmarks (real game benchmarks, not just 3DMark) on XP, then again on the same hardware using Vista.
I just have to prove to a friend that XP is better for gaming than Vista is.

Firstly I apologize if this has been asked earlier, but I couldn't find an answer to my question. I have a 1530 on order. The OS will be Vista Premium x86. There are 2 things I need to do-
1. Upgrade the HD from a 5400 to a 7200, I have the HD.
2. Install Windows Vista Business - I have an original retail version, and I absolutely need this.
I have the Vista Business Retail DVD. What I want to do is have Windows and the dell partitions configured exactly as they came with the original computer, only with Vista Business, and on the new hard disk. I don't want to alter Media Direct, or delete the restoration partition. Everything should be the same except the Windows Versio

I was wondering if anyone has tried out any games on the V13...
I am considering getting the V13 (and you gotta admit, it's one sleek looking laptop); but would really want to be able to play Starcraft 2 on it. I simply want to play it on all low settings and have playable frame rates..
I would be getting the Core 2 Dual 1.3Ghz config...
And of course, the only video card choice, the famous GMA 4500MHD..

Background:
A few days ago i bought an Acer 7730 laptop with Windows Vista pre-installed and no disks. After initial hesitation i have decided to keep vista and not downgrade to XP. After all there will be more service packs and tweaking should speed it up lots anyway.
However, i really want to get rid of the three partitions on the hard drive. There is only one physical hard drive but there are three partitions; a hidden 10GB one (EISA configuration) which from what i have gathered is now obsolete, a C: partition 111.44GB and a D: partition 111.44GB. There is no need to split a drive into several partitions now that we have the NTFS file system (unless you are using multiple operating systems of course - but i am not) so this is really annoying me.
I have made the 2 recovery DVD and the 1 applications/drivers DVD. I have an old WinXP disk that i can use to format the laptop if required.
Question:
Using the recovery disks (which i'm assuming contain a copy of my bought OEM Vista that was pre-installed on the laptop), can i delete the partitions, format the hard drive and install Vista onto a single c: partition?
I've done this exact process before with WinXP hundreds of times but i'm not sure whether i can do the same for Vista with just the 3 DVD mentioned...

I have owned my XPS 1530 for about 8 months now. It has been quite some time since i took my original temperatures, but i remember running games like warhammer online, call of duty, etc, at a temperature of 45c idle status , and like GPU 71c under hours of gaming. I think the hottest it got was GPU 79 degrees. 8 months later i decided to try gaming again and to my surprise my laptop is getting SO hot that it burns my hands and my speedfan shows the GPU at like GPU 64 idle ( 69 when the batter adapter is in) and up to 91-95 when on a game. I used to have a zalman laptop cooler which kept my comp a bit cooler, but i only noticed it effecting my temp. by about 2-3 degrees. I am going to undervolt and get my broken zalman replaced but I need to know one thing:
Do I have defective hardware? Is it normal to see an increase in temperatures as laptops get older? I am very afraid that something is damaged. Also, is there a specific driver that i should be running which can help my graphics card cool down, or am i one of the unlucky few who have been given a bugged 8600gt.

I realize that many people here have an m1710 and i figured this could be a place to get some answers. So im playing Oblivion on my m1710 and i noticed when i have it at the highest resolution with no AA it gets really shitty fps so i turned it down to the second highest with no AA and i still got shity fps when in battle and such. I then proceeded to turn it down even lower. After all of this I still get shitty fps (down to like 8 in battle) even when its at like 1280 by 1024 so this is all with antialiasing off and when i turn it on not much happens except like 3 less fps. So i was just wondering if anyone knew what the hell my problem was because its annoying me. Even when i overclock my graphics card it doesnt really help but maybe 3 to 4 fps better.
my specifications are:
m1710/ 2gigs of ram / t7400 dual core processor 2.16ghz/ nvidia go 7950gtx ?

I recently bought an M1730 laptop... you can see the details from the link in my signature.
I'm running Vista Ultimate X64 on it and installed all the original Dell 64-Bit drivers from the website -
however the gaming LCD does not seem to function, it just displays XPS?

I recently had the pleasure of having a laptop (inspiron 1520) crap out on me after only just two years (i bought it November 2007). I had a laptop cooler and used the laptop for ocassional LAN parties, gaming and also to do my homework until I broke. I know some of you might say it's my fault for not buying the extended warrenty but come on, a $1300 dollar machine should last at least four years with normal care. That's the least I expect from a normal laptop. Is that too much to ask for? Anyway after that whole expierience I'll never get another laptop for gaming again, especially from Dell.
If you are considering buying a laptop for gaming consider other options unless you really need to game on the go.

Since I recently upgraded to BIOS A12, my XPS 1530 fan goes at full speed when gaming, even if the temps don't go too high...
If I pause the game and go do something else for 1-2 hours, the fan will be at full speed those 1-2 hours... it is better to quit the game instead of just pausing in those cases?

I own a dell m1530 and I've recently had a framerate problem while playing games where the frame rate is just plain unstable. (I noticed it about a month ago, wasn't like this when I first got the computer)
I've tried updating BIOS, getting most recent video drivers/reverting back to old, restoring system to factory state, lowering ingame settings to minimum etc.
It happens with every single game I play - I'll be at 100 fps for a few seconds then ill drop to 50 fps for a few seconds and back to 100 and so on. Same with games I run at lower framerates - I'll be at 40 fps then 20 then 40 etc.

Ive had my E1705 for over a year . I was very satisfied with it`s performance . It was handling all my applications without any problems . Now it broke and i will be getting a new laptop soon .
I am not a hardcore gamer but i realy like and enjoy some games . I expect games to run on max settings to enjoy them . So far ive had just a few . My newest games r Doom3 ( D3:RoE ) , BF2 , BF2142 . Also i play wow wich runs flawlessly on my E1705 .
Now we have several great games coming in the end of the year . I dont think my laptop would handle them since i see that people with M1710s are experiencing problems .
Thus i have a choice between 3 brands on gaming laptops . My budget is around 3000$ .
Here are 3 models ive been looking at .....

My temps are killing me, here in Singapore, where its hot all year round! 96C for GPU when gaming!
Its great to have winter. I bet gaming out in the yard beats any notebook cooler heheh.
Oh btw, does the GPU downclock at around 93C-96C? I've noticed I can run the game at 1028x720 when I just start playing, but a few minutes later it becomes a slideshow

personally, 9500m is tempting not sure if it's better than 8600m gt even nvidia's site states that 9500m 8600m's successor,
but it's GS...
and by the way why why why dell had to use an ATI card for xps studio 16 and used the nvidia card in xps studio 13

Apparently Dell is going to finish completely with the XPS gaming range (PCs & Laptop) in favor of the Alienware range. The XPS Studio range is expected to continue unchanged.

I have just bought a new game - dawn of war 2.
Approx 30 mins into the game the laptop just shuts down, no BSOD, just powers off. When i reboot it there is no system error saying it was a major crash or any warning telling me why.....
I have installed a heat program to record the heat on teh GPU and the CPU, at the point of crash the GPU is around 85 degrees C.
I have taken the back off the laptop and cleaned the Heatsink fan, it was pretty dusty.

I ordered my 9400 with an ATI X1400 and now that I see from reading this forum that it is considered a pretty lame GPU I was wondering:
Since I don't play games on my laptop (except Civ4, which runs fine) should I even care that my GPU sucks. Is there anything other than gaming that the GPU does that would make me consider upgrading. I have a 2GHz CPU and 2 gigs of ram and I'm really quite impressed with my first laptop. I'm just one of those idiots who gets jealous when he notices that his "toy" has an inferior component in it.
