Feb 12, 2009My flatmate is having a problem with her laptop (Dell Studio 15)
I'm entirely sure on the specs but I do know its Core 2 Duo, ATI Gfx card, 3gb ram, 25gb hdd, and the usual.
Basically the laptop powers on ok however during the booting up stage the laptop pretty much stops just before windows is supposed to load up where the screen is black with the mouse cursor available which can be moved however from then on it doesn't do anything.

2 - Windows is unable to find a system volume that meets its criteria for installation. What? My HDDisk size is 298.1GB free space?

Jan 11, 2009Firstly I apologize if this has been asked earlier, but I couldn't find an answer to my question. I have a 1530 on order. The OS will be Vista Premium x86. There are 2 things I need to do-
1. Upgrade the HD from a 5400 to a 7200, I have the HD.
2. Install Windows Vista Business - I have an original retail version, and I absolutely need this.
I have the Vista Business Retail DVD. What I want to do is have Windows and the dell partitions configured exactly as they came with the original computer, only with Vista Business, and on the new hard disk. I don't want to alter Media Direct, or delete the restoration partition. Everything should be the same except the Windows Versio

A few days ago i bought an Acer 7730 laptop with Windows Vista pre-installed and no disks. After initial hesitation i have decided to keep vista and not downgrade to XP. After all there will be more service packs and tweaking should speed it up lots anyway.
However, i really want to get rid of the three partitions on the hard drive. There is only one physical hard drive but there are three partitions; a hidden 10GB one (EISA configuration) which from what i have gathered is now obsolete, a C: partition 111.44GB and a D: partition 111.44GB. There is no need to split a drive into several partitions now that we have the NTFS file system (unless you are using multiple operating systems of course - but i am not) so this is really annoying me.
I have made the 2 recovery DVD and the 1 applications/drivers DVD. I have an old WinXP disk that i can use to format the laptop if required.
Question:
Using the recovery disks (which i'm assuming contain a copy of my bought OEM Vista that was pre-installed on the laptop), can i delete the partitions, format the hard drive and install Vista onto a single c: partition?
I've done this exact process before with WinXP hundreds of times but i'm not sure whether i can do the same for Vista with just the 3 DVD mentioned...

Oct 18, 2008I have a Studio 17 with Vista Home Premium preinstalled. Im trying to install Vista Ultimate 64 bit, and when I boot from the DVD, it says Loading files, than at the end of that it shows me to screen with the Microsoft bar like its going to load windows, but then I immediately get a blue screen with the error irql not equal to or something like that.
I tried disable the flash cache in the BIOS but it still gets the blue screen as soon as it trys to enter the setup screen.
My BIOS is set to ACHI and I have not changed that.
I wanted to try out the 64 bit Vista and still have my 32 bit on it in case I run into some apps that wont run in 64 bit.
anyone have any idea what I need to do? I have a seperate logical partition that I made for the Vista 64 bit. So I have 2 partitions, a C: partition which has the Vista Home on it that came with this laptop and I was hoping to install the 64 bit onto the D: partition but Im getting the blue screen.
Do I need to do anything with the ACHI setting? I have 4 gigs of ram and would like to use it.

for SATA or what have you during the install.
Has anyone successfully installed Vista (any version) from scratch?
Did you have driver issues? Did everything work when you were done?
I plan on putting in a different HDD and trying the install just to see
how far I can get.

Feb 4, 2009Might as well outline what I did. Picked up a 2Gb stick of Patriot RAM for my Studio 15, boosting total RAM in the laptop to 4 Gb.
Vistax86 can only use 3.5Gb (Task Manager showed 3518 Mb capable of being addressed, to be exact) of it, and since I plan to move to a 64-bit OS when Windows 7 SP1 comes out, I'm in a situation where I have 500 Mb of unused RAM in my setup.
I decided to use the remaining memory as a RAMDisk. Downloaded and installed DataRam's RAMDisk beta (http://www.cenatek.com/product_page_...load_list.php), a tool recommended in the OCZ forums as part of a series of tweaks for Jmicron SSDs.

Oct 7, 2008Has anyone been able to get their Ethernet Controller to work on the Studio 17? I have the wireless working, but the Ethernet Controller will not load any drivers, automatic or manual. I have searched Intel's site and downloaded every 64 bit driver from Dell's Studio 17 download page.

Aug 15, 2009I decided to hold off on upgrading to Windows 7 on my Studio 1555 but I wanted to perform a clean install of Vista. So I popped in the Vista installation disc that came with the computer, partitioned the hard drive, and installed Vista. Now it is up and running but with a few problems. The problems are; (1)the ethernet controller is not recognized, (2)the intergrated camera is not recognized (when I open Webcam Central is says "Please plug in a supported webcam), and (3) the displays that used to show up when using the brightness and volume function keys no longer appears. I installed all of the drivers on the drivers and utilities disc that came with the computer but these problems are still there.

I've ordered recovery disks with absolutely NO problem for other manufacturers. What a mistake that was.
I got in contact with Dell. They insisted that they need to know the original owners name in order for everything to be transferred so I can get the disks. Only one problem - I can't .....
