View 5 Replies View RelatedI just got a nicely loaded E6500 from the Dell Outlet. It has XP installed but came with a Vista Business licence and I am just not sure whether to or if vista is an "upgrade" or not. I've read a bunch of reviews comparing the two systems but they were all done on Vista's release and did not account for the SP1 and other fixes, those reviews seemed to give Vista a slight edge but by no means was it overwhelming. So I was wondering what peoples opinion of Vista was now that its been on the market for a while and has had some fixes applied.
Brief specs on the laptop:
2.5ghz, 3m L2C, 1066FSB
2gb ram (1 dimm) have a second 2gb dimm on order.
250gb 7200rpm HD
Nvidia Quadro 256mb vid card.
my usage:
I am not a gamer. I do some limited video, Photoshop and audio arranging. For the most part it will be a general usage computer mainly using MS Office apps, web apps and multimedia playback.
I asked Dell Tech Support to send me the install media for Vista Business 64-bit for my E6500. They said that since my System Type is "X86-based PC," I won't be able to run 64-bit. Is there no workaround? Is that really true? My refurb laptop came with XP Pro installed as a downgrade from Vista Business 32-bit. It has a T9600 processor. Does anyone have experience installing Vista Business 64-bit on a laptop like mine?

For those that use Windows on your Mac's, which version do you recommend? I'm thinking, what's best for battery life, performance etc..
I have a copy of Windows XP Pro SP3 and Windows Vista Ultimate SP2. I'm tempted to go with XP for simplicity, and the fact that it has equal compatibility and a shed load less intrusive DRM.
I have a "Hive" error message that displays on a blue screen. Windows does not load. Any wa getting this machine going ....

Does anyone among you have the same specs with windows 32-bit?
Does your laptop read 4gb of RAM or do you only get 2.75-3.5gb of RAM?
Is it possible for me to get win 7 64 bit instead of 32 bit when it is released.
By the way, I got a friend who has a XPS M1730 with a 2.53ghz core 2 duo and 4gb of ram and using win vista 32 bit, but he told me that his laptop does read 4gb of ram.Any explanation?

It's good idea to install windows 7 64bit?

Okay.
So, I purchased a used Dell 1545 off of eBay that had everything with it except the Operating System. I figured - no problem.
I've ordered recovery disks with absolutely NO problem for other manufacturers. What a mistake that was.
I got in contact with Dell. They insisted that they need to know the original owners name in order for everything to be transferred so I can get the disks. Only one problem - I can't .....
ive seen videos of people logging into there windows vista user account using the inbuilt fingerprint scanner,
I cant seem to find anything on my system which will help me do this??
I previously had XP installed as its operating system and combining it with the dell security centre I was able to login using the finger print scanner,
unlike vista where it simply doesnt work ?
I have a lot of stability issues with Factory Vista x64 installation, I will try to install from scratch Windows XP x64 and Windows Vista x64, I am not very familiar with Dell Notebooks (ex Lenovo guy), please could you tell me where I can find the correct installation sequence for all the drivers and tools?, I did some tests already, but I was not able to successfully install Dell Control Point, I got and error in the middle of the installation, I think I am doing something wrong, also I have installed the driver for UWB, but I do not find the tool to setup the Wireless USB hub?
View 9 Replies View Relatedi have recently formatted my hard drive and installed cean copy of Vista Ultilate on my DELL Inspiron 1525 machine. I did not use dell recovery partion to install, instead i use Vista Disk.
I was able to install all the drivers except bluetooth. Whenever i try to to install bluetooth drivers i get following error " The installer be run on windows vista only"..
i was with dell tech support for couple of hours but they were not able to solve my problem. The bluetooth is enabled in BIOS, switch is on etc.
I want to dual boot the new Win 7 RC with the default Windows Vista OS already on the M1530.
My issues lie in not being able to make a 5th partition on the HDD for Win7 to go onto. Is there any way to keep my computer intact the it is and get Win7 on the HDD?
Before I deleted the Media Direct Partition but thats a horrible idea... just wondering if it would be possible without keeping another 2.5" HDD around just to have Win 7 sit on.
My flatmate is having a problem with her laptop (Dell Studio 15)
I'm entirely sure on the specs but I do know its Core 2 Duo, ATI Gfx card, 3gb ram, 25gb hdd, and the usual.
Basically the laptop powers on ok however during the booting up stage the laptop pretty much stops just before windows is supposed to load up where the screen is black with the mouse cursor available which can be moved however from then on it doesn't do anything.
My girlfriend wants to install Windows 7 over Vista on her laptop. Is there anything that would prevent her formatting the HDD and installing Win 7? Something in the BIOS
View 4 Replies View RelatedWindows XP/Vista Reinstall Guide for Dell 17" Laptops
Specifically made for the XPS M1710
Also works for the Inspiron 9400/E1705, 1720, XPS M1730, Precision M90 and M6300, see *NOTE* below
Guide Version 1.20 (Last Updated: 5-20-2008)
I've gotten probably about 15-20 requests on a guide with the drivers I personally use for my XPS M1710 for reinstalling Windows, since I have both an XP-dedicated M1710 and a Vista-dedicated M1710. So... I finally got around to posting it for everyone to see, and it includes some things that some people don't know about... It was originally going to be just what drivers to use, but instead, I morphed it into a full reinstall guide, as there are some things in here alot of people don't know about.
I'm splitting this guide into two parts. The first being for Windows XP, and the second being for Windows Vista. Both are similar in ways, but its better to do it in 2 different sections, to avoid any confusion. I'm not posting a guide for Windows x64, as I unfortunately do not have a copy of it in either XP or Vista form, and most people on the forums don't use it, so this guide is sticking to the 32-Bit versions of the respective OSes.
*NOTE*Inspiron 9400/E1705 - Exchange the Gigabit Ethernet drivers outlined below for the Broadcom 10/100 drivers on the Dell Downloads site for the Inspiron 9400/E1705.
Inspiron 1720 - Exchange the Gigabit Ethernet drivers outlined below for the Broadcom 10/100 drivers on the Dell Downloads site for the Inspiron 1720. Also, exchange the Modem drivers for the one specifically for your laptop. If you have a Webcam, add that software in as the last "driver" installed before moving to the next step.
XPS M1730 - Exchange the Modem drivers for those specifically for the XPS M1730. If you have a Webcam, add that software, along with the "Logitech GamePanel" software, in as the last "driver" installed before moving to the next step.
Precision M90 - Procedure should be the same as that for the XPS M1710, including all drivers.
Precision M6300 - Exchange the Modem drivers for those specifically for the Precision M6300, and also add in the fingerprint reader software (if wanted/needed) as the last "driver" installed before moving to the next step
For the newer (Inspiron 1720, XPS M1730, Precision M6300) model laptops, you MUST DISABLE AHCI (change the setting from AHCI --> ATA) in the BIOS in order to proceed with installation of the Operating System without issues, otherwise the installation WILL FAIL......................
I am trying to start my computer, it gives the message:
NTLDR is missing
Press any key to restart
I have Dell XPS M1530 with Windows Vista installed on it.
This is now available for download for the M6400, and probably some of the other newer-model laptops from dell as well....
View 5 Replies View RelatedI am not sure if I am the only one who had problems with the XPS 1640 so far. So I would like to hear your Dell Stories as well!
Uhm it all started with me unpacking the Notebook and noticing a french manual instead of a German one..
that wasnt too bad but once I noticed that the right speaker was not sounding too well (it sounded pretty messed up especially once I turned the notebook a little up)
My Dell Inspirion 1721 fails to start the Windows boot.
The F8 and CTRL F11 do not work at all. I did the hours long total diagnostic that is built in and everthing passed - so must be software.
How do I recover? Can I just install a new version of Windows (to replace Vista) and save the existing files and software on the laptop?
I have a Dell Inspiron 1720 with Windows Vista. The Windows is dead and always boots to a repair dialog that gives me only two options: reboot and shutdown. It also does that when trying to bot in Safe Mode. So I tried to boot on the recovery partition to try to recover my installation. The problem I have now is that the recover option needs my administrator password. I've tried 3 wrong passwords since I really don't remember it. After the third fail, I got a dialog telling me that my administrator account as been disabled! WHAT!! It disabled the only account I need to recover or reinstall!! How can I recover my PC now!!?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a Dell Inspiron 1440 that won't boot now. Â Using WinVista Ultimate and needed to reboot but it hangs after the Dell logo/Inspiron screen with the white status bar is completed at the bottom of the LED screen. Â I removed the 500GB HD and inserted a new 1TB Win7 Professional that I've been working on for the last couple of weeks and it won't boot either. Â Same situation on both HD (2 Win OSes on same laptop with same issue). Â FYI, I have 8GB RAM in the laptop (been that way for couple of years) but I don't suspect the RAM as the issue. Â I do have 2-2GB RAM DIMMs that came with the laptop initially in case that's a test I need to make.
Functionally, it appears like the boot sector on the HD isn't "available" but I've tried two (2) different HDs and I get the same issue. Â Hence, I think it's not a HD issue.
What IS the issue and what are my options? Â Laptop appears to be fine otherwise. Â New motherboard? Â $$??
Pressing F2 or F12 doesn't get me anywhere at startup time either.
