Jan 14, 2009I have an AR-VGN370. After many months of waiting Vista Service Pack 1 finally is offered via Windows Update. I have assumed it was the Sigmatel driver that had prevented me from receivng SP 1. Is there anyone else for whom SP1 has recently become available and installed successfully? I am very hestitant to allow the install.

Jun 8, 2009I have dell studio 17 notebook with vista home premium SP1, and I'm not sure if I should install the new SP2, i'm afraid that the notebook could have problems with this update, like problems to boot windows again or some catastrophic error like that.
Has anybody install this update on this notebook, should I expect problems ? Someone note real improvements thank to this SP ? Like faster boot up or better general OS performance ?

Sep 1, 2007I have a store-bought copy of Oblivion with the latest update. I bought the Horse Armor Pack and Vile Lair Pack, but both refuse to install. I get to the screen where I enter the serial number, hit the 'Next' button, and that's where they both freeze. Under Data Files nothing shows up as being installed either. I'm not sure if this really needs a separate thread or could go in the VM sticky, but I thought it's pretty important.
It's just been revealed that Windows 7 will have a Virtual Windows XP mode that will basically be running Windows XP in a VM and include integration features like Coherence in VMWare Fusion and Unity in Parallels Desktop. They are doing this to address the remaining software backwards compatibility issues in Windows 7. Of course, Microsoft being Microsoft with their product segmentation, is currently limiting access to Windows XP mode for Professional Edition users and higher, although it is commendable that they are offering it for free.
Why is this significant for Macs? I think this is very useful because future Window operating systems and applications will be written with the expectation that they will be running in VMs in future OS for compatibility. It wouldn't surprise me if Windows 7 (kernel 6.1) and Office 2010 are already being designed in a way so that they can run well in a VM for a future kernel 7.0 based Windows OS. These optimizations would of course benefit Mac users who still have to use Windows application or perhaps even play games. I'm sure it'll also be a compelling transition point to encourage switchers, especially if they are already familiar with virtualization from Windows 7.

After confirming my computer has Microsoft 7 [32 bit] installed, after confirming that my computer shows this program updated as of today and that my computer shows Microsoft t as "activated" under Computer/Properties I am still asked for product key and then told I have incorrect #. I have also confirmed I have a microsoft product key and it is not a serial #, model # etc. It is clearly marked.
I have a Microsoft Windows 10 on a trial basis that works OK but not the 7.

Feb 17, 2009I have a Latitude XT running Vista 32bit, 64GB SSD, Bluetooth 360, and Dell 1395 WLAN card. My issue has been when I am pulling or sending large amounts of information accross the network, my Wireless stops functioning and acts as if I disabled the card. I cannot search for any networks and opening the mobility center I can turn the wireless off and on but it will not work till I reboot the Tablet.
My XT has all the current OS and Driver updates but this is really starting to bug me. This happened to me 2 times yesterday when I was copying an Adobe Standard 8 DVD to a server so that we can do installs without needing to carry the DVD. I would get about half way through the file transfer and my network would disconnect with a red X.

Apr 13, 2009when using vista my wireless will just stop working after a couple hours of use.
Basically it will just disconnect me from what ever router I'm using, and I will be unable to reconnect until I restart the pc.
The weird thing is that when using Ubuntu on the same laptop, I never have this problem.
So based on this, I'm guessing that it isn't a problem with the actual wireless card, rather some problem with the drivers; but that's just me making an educated guess.

Apr 23, 2009I'm reformating a VAIO that originally came with XP Home RTM. The recovery discs have vanilla XP on it, so no service pack, not even SP1. Yes, its an older VAIO, but I am hoping to breath new life into it by starting fresh. Now, I am just wondering, after reformatting from the recovery discs, about the install sequence. Should I first install the Sony updates from the esupport site, or should I first upgrade to the latest service pack (SP3) and then install the Sony updates?
The other crappy thing is I can't go straight to SP3, SP3 requires a minimum of SP1. That means I have to do to service pack installs, which in my opinion may have ill effects on performance on the finished product. So I have two options to get to SP3, which is better and cleaner:
RTM->SP1a->SP3
RTM->SP2->SP3

What is "Software WLAN switch"? There is a plastic switch on the front of the laptop with "Wireless LAN" written above it, it is in the ON position. I don't know what is being referred to by "Software WLAN switch". How do I enable it? I really miss the simplicity of Intel Proset's Utility.

May 24, 2010I have a Sony VGN-SZ780 notebook, wih the switchable graphics--either Intel integrated, or Nvidia discrete. The NVidia graphics card is GeForce 8400M GS.
When in Nvidia mode, in the Nvidia Control Panel, it looks like there is a possibiity of TV Out built into the NVidia card. The notebook does not have a special TV out port, so it seems to be one of those that can send the TV Out signal through the VGA port.
I bought a cable for that, VGA on one end, the other end a RCA composite video plug, and also an S-video plug. Cheap, through a vendor on Amazon. (Note--not a converter, just a cable, made for notebooks that can send TV Out hrough the VGA port.)
It doesn't work. I cannot get a decent signal to the TV that way, and the Nvidia card does not recognize that the TV is connected.
I don't know, however, if it is a defective cable, defective NVidia card, or whether that feaure really does not work well at all for anyone, and better to buy one of the converter boxes, that converts regular VGA output to TV?
Anyone here tried TV Out?

Jun 13, 2012How to disable auto brightness feature on my laptop. It's dell xps 15 with 1080p display. It happens on battery only, on every power plan. I don't mean the display dimming after a certain time, but it just goes from bright to dark. The darker the image, the darker the screen dimms and vice versa. I had another problem which was the colors going crazy when the screen went back on after unplugging charger or waking it on battery (it all went down to what was like 256 color range).
This problem was resolved after unchecking "Intel Display Power Saving Technology" in Dell Quick Set. Yet I can't get rid of the auto screen dimming which is extremely annoying. Has the laptop got an ambient light sensor or something?
I all seems like there's an ambient light sensor which is trigggered by the brightness of the screen itself and it shouldn't work like that.
Dell Latitude E5530 :: TouchPad Feature Disables When USB Mouse Present
Jan 6, 2015Okay, I can't get the "feature" of the touchpad to work where it "disables when a USB mouse is present"
Reason: There is a perpetual bluetooth mouse appearing in the device manager.
I actually have 3 mouse devices listed: Touchpad, HID-Compliant (bluetooth), and HID-Compliant (Wifi). Numbers 1 and 3 are correct. Number 2 is not really there,
When I pull the WiFi dongle, the #3 mouse correctly goes away, leaving me with two.
Clearly, the touchpad is detecting a "HID-Compliant" mouse "on bluetooth". BUT THERE IS NO MOUSE PAIRED. I tried to uninstall the bluetooth software from Add/Remove (or whatever Win7 calls it this year), but the device is still there. So I did an "uninstall" of the device in the device manager, and it comes back. (yes rebooting between all attempts)
So, something, somewhere, is claiming to be a mouse on the bluetooth stack. How do I make it go away, since it's not really there? Because it is causing the touchpad software to disable, thinking there is another device.
Additionally, when I forgot my mouse, I tried to activate the touchpad... Do you realize that it is completely *impossible* to manipulate the user interface to the Tochpad applet in the control panel without a mouse in the first place??? You cannot make the "save" button activate. This is the ultimate in poor usage design.
