Mar 3, 2013I rebuilt my new XPS 15 with Windows 7. I didn't build any recovery media before I wiped the hard drive. Where can I download the recovery tools to restore to factory build ?

View 1 RepliesI recently bought a T530 with Windows 8 pre-installed. I want to create recovery disc(s). However, in the "Create a recovery media" wizard, I don't have the option of selecting DVDs if tick the option "Copy the recovery partition to the media". I have a bunch of DVDs lying around and I would like to use them. Not to mention that I don't intend to buy USB drive just for this purpose.
View 9 Replies View RelatedToday I received my new worklaptop, a W540 with Windows 8 installed.
The first think I wanted to do was to create recovery media (I'm going to re-install on a SSD). However, trying to run the Windows 8 "Create recovery media" tool, as sugested by Lenovo, results in the following:
The option "Copy the recovery partition ..." is grayed out, and I can not select it. Pressing Next results in the following:
I have been sent 4 sets of Windows 7 Recovery Media from Lenovo over the past week and a half. These DVDs are unusable as they will not boot because they were created as non-bootable DVDs. When looking at the DVDs, they all just have 1 file on them - 0A44006.dvd. I was sent a set of the 32bit version and it has multiple files on it with Bootmgr and 6 directories and will boot just fine. The 64bit DVDs obviously were created and replicated without any of these files to make it a bootable DVD.

3 of those notebooks are HP Probook 450 G2's (PN: J4R69EA)
(These are the models with the 128GB SSD drives)
The other two are Lenovo E540’s with similar specs.
So first things first, create recovery media. So that is done before I hand them to the end users in question. While trying to create the windows disc, the "HP Recovery Disc Creator" program demands Dual layer DVD's: "Please insert a Dual-Layer DVD to proceed" The DVD's in question I’m using are "Sony DVD+R 120min/4.7GB" discs that in the past have always worked. (and at this moment are working for the Lenovo portables)
[URL] Unfortunately this is not the same interface I have. I can only choose a drive to create a backup to
(in this case it is Drive F: for internal drive) I also tried an external DVD writer with the same results.
I have not tried a USB stick, but this is not what I want and since you can only create one set of backups…

This would not be that big of a problem if there was an actual windows 7 key printed on the portable. If I had a key, I would just reinstall the machine straight away with a clean windows 7 image so I dont have to clean out all the HP software. but unfortunatly this is not the case. so i need a Windows 7 Recovery disc to be created.
ive just finished setting up my new acer ES1-512, And was about to make my recovery media through the acer console in windows 8.1, and the program will not open ? i get to the part where it wants me to allow the program to make changes, but then nothing happens ? i have tried going to the file location its self to to start the program but this makes no difference, ive looked all over acers site to see if i can re-download the console but have found nothing?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI've just replaced HDD by SSD and tried to make a recovery USB media by means of 8.1 recovery utility. The process takes suspiciously short time, but finishes normally reporting that media is created. The size of all files on the flash is about 200 MB. When I did the same media with HDD the size was 12GB. I tried to boot with that flash and it failed with a message about corrupted media or the like. I always believed that windows does not take into account the physical structure of the drive and cannot understand what's going on and what to do.

I installed (after changing Sata to AHCI) without incident. After the install completes I reboot and it crashes. The OS goes to "attempting repairs". I can run a "refresh" of the OS and it will fix the issue and then crash again after a reboot.

View 15 Replies View RelatedI just received my XPS 15 and plan on dual-booting Win 7 and Ubuntu. I'm trying to install both, but I have no disk drive boot option in UEFI mode, only in legacy mode.
How can I boot from a disk using UEFI mode?
I'm in the process of upgrading my L521X/XPS 15 to Windows 8. The A09 BIOS introduced UEFI booting, which I of course intend to use. However, I can't get Windows installed when Smart Response is activated in the BIOS. The installer simply doesn't show any disks - even when loading the correct drivers. Changing to AHCI allows me to install - but of course without the benefit of Smart Response. Now, the question is: is it possible to use pure UEFI and Intel Smart Response Technology on the L521X?

Can I access a recovery method on bootup?
I would like to buy a Dell Latitude 6540 and have found out the following statement in the configuration:
“Operating System Recovery Options: no media”.
It also says: "Dell Backup and Recovery: Dell Backup and Recovery Basic"
I think this means that I will not get a recovery disk along with the system.
If so, I wonder how I can re-load the system in case I need it for whatever reason (for example how can re-format the HD if I need it to?)
How I can get the original system restore/recovery media for the above machine?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI paid $60 just for some recovery discs to recover my accidentally formatted Yoga 2 Pro. The discs came with no instructions whatsoever, and using them is weird. First of all, there is two disc 1's, no disc 2, yet there is a disc 3 and 4. Support confirmed this is normal. There is also no prompt between discs 1,1, and 2, so despite making my best guess at when to switch, I can't confidently say I'm not screwing things up.
After the whole process completes, the bios can't find bootable media.
I currently installed Ubuntu and it was good but It drained my battery so I decided to take it off. After that my computer started to act weird. The Media Direct partition appeared in next to my OS and Recovery partitions. When i would press the MD button, I would get a blue screen and eventually every time I press the button It just turns on my computer. When I try to turn it back on after putting it on hibernate, it states that windows did not turn off right and it restarts windows. I have decided to a clean reinstall of Vista and MD but I have a few questions. I found this tutorial on how to do it on the internet but i found that i have to completely delete all the partitions including the recovery partition. I was wondering if there is a way to do this without having to delete that partition?

I finally ordered one from the Store, and tried it out tonight. I set the boot order to USB HDD, and, well, nothing happens! First, I see a cursor in the top left corner, and then I see the little circle of balls wait indicator, but i never get any other screen! Could I have a bad USB media from ACER?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI recently acquired a new Thinkpad W530 with Windows 7 Pro.
I want to immediately replace the 500gb main drive with a larger one. I plan to do this by imaging the system partition of the current drive to an external USB hdd, and then then writing the image to the larger one after it's installed in the W530.
My question: Can I then just store the original drive away as is, to use for recovery (should the need arise), in lieu of creating recovery media now?
It seems pretty clear the answer should be "yes," but since I've always used XP up until now I'm wondering if there are any kinds of Win 7-specific watchouts (maybe licensing-rleated?) that would keep things from being as simple as popping the original drive back in the main hdd slot to get things back to exactly where they are today?
I have a brand new T440 which I am populating and customising.I created a new partition on the HDD using MiniTool Partition Wizzard. That may have created the problem - I can't create the recovery media. I get a message that the files are not there. I should have done it before partitioning - too late now.
However, using the Partition Wizzard, I can assign a drive letter to the Recovery partition, and it becomes visible in Windows Explorer (File manager). I can copy the content on an external HD drive.
I have made a Recovery disk on a USB Flash Drive using the Lenovo “create a recovery disk” in the Lenovo Solution Centre software.
The USB Drive seems to have been created successfully. It shows in Windows Disk Management as cbd_drive (D 14.48GB NTFS Healthy (Active, Primary Partition).
When I interrupt the boot with F12, The USB Drive comes up as an option (USB HDD: Sandisk Ultra), but when this option is selected, the screen flashes briefly, then returns back to the boot options again, so the USB drive will not boot properly – the boot fails and reverts back to the boot options screen.
The root directory of the USB contains the following -
BOOT (Folder)
FactoryRecovery (Folder)
usb.tag
winRE.wim
I have read other threads on here, and think I have covered the issues raised there. This is the first time I have used a USB flash drive as a recovery disk, so I may be missing something very basic.
Is something wrong with the USB drive
I have been asked to recover a HP Mini 210-2080ee with a failed hard drive. I am unable to source a recovery DVD or USB since the machine was bought in the Middle East and the media is not available in Ireland or the UK.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently ordered a new Carbon X1 20A7 for a VP here and noticed that it, as well as all the other sets we receive for the T430's, W530, etc all contain 4 things - 3 discs and a small pamphlet. The Pamphlet explains that the discs should be labeled 1 2 3 and all (Ive checked an order of 100 T430s and the first 17 boxes are all wrong) contain 2 x #1 and a #2 - I have looked in the old lab and found older shipments that all contain similar 1 1 2 instead of 1 2 3 .

Is there a way to start the process besides from boot up?
I am trying to restore a corrupted M5 to factory defaults. Since the HDD was corrupted, the Acer eRecovery would not work. I purchased the Recovery Media CD set, changed BIOS to boot from CD, disabled secure Boot.
The System Disc comes up, i selected Restore Operating System to factory default. I get prompts to insert Recovery Disc 1, and after a few seconds get a message that the is no sufficient disk space to copy temporary files.
The HDD is 500GB, C: drive is 450GB and 415GB free.
I have had the laptop for three months.Every time it boots up it I get the message: checking media/media fail.
It then goes to a blue screen with error code 0xc0000001. I ran diagnostics and got the message error code 2000-0145 validation 100079.
I've been looking and can't find any answers. Firstly my laptop specs

windows 7 ultimate x64 (retail not RC)
t9300 cpu
8600m gt gfx card
320gb 7200rpm seagate momentus hdd

i have 4 primary partitions, one EISA, one OS, one DATA and one Mediadirect. Now im wondering if it is safe and if its possible to format the Mediadirect partition in windows vista diskmanagement? Will windows still work without the MBR screwing up after rebooting the computer?
