Dell :: Windows Media Revocation And Renewal
Feb 12, 2010
After upgrading my Inspiron 1520 to Windows 7 Professional from Vista Home Premium, and try and play DRM protected WMA files, an error comes up after some time (varies from a couple minutes to a couple days) in Windows saying "Windows Media Revocation and Renewal:
You must restart the machine to continue content processing". I use WMP as my primary music/video player, but I tried playing my protected DRM files with Songbird, and get the same error .....

I have a dell laptop (E1705) that I bought 7/2/2006 and had a warranty on until 7/2/2007. My warranty expired and I have taken excellent care of my laptop since then but this did not stop my laptop from dieing and refusing now to turn on.
Now, I know this is somewhat slippery but is it possible to reactivate my warranty on the laptop and then have them fix it under warranty? My immediate thought was "of course not" but after looking at the dell warranty website and entering my service code there was an offer for "Limited Warranty Reinstatement" for $49 or else I could select "limited warranty upgrades" and extend my coverage until 7/2/2011 for $149.
It would seem that I could purchase the warranty again. Has anyone done this? If I do get the warranty again do you think they would service the laptop or would I have spent $50 for nothing?

i got a new hp tx2 and when i turn it on it came loaded full of "crap" so i wanted to reload 7.. and they didnt send an OS cd... So i went ahead and created a recovery cd and when i reloaded still had all the crap installed.. so i called them up, and was told that HP can not provide me with an OEM CD.. they can only "sell" me a recovery cd which has all their software and drivers preloaded.... So the technical guy is right? i cant get Windows OEM media from them? how stupid is this? dell, toshiba, fujitso, sony send the cds but hp doesnt and they dont even give you an option to buy it.....

I have a Vostro 1700 with Vista installed. When I got it I didn't want the Dell Mediadirect softare on there so reinstalled with those partitions removed and just Vista on there.
I also tried installing Windows XP to see how that worked on it; XP installed fine and worked well, but I had the problem that if I touched the Media Direct button it could knacker up the whole XP installation. Obviously,
I couldn't resist trying, and low and behold, when I pressed the button my XP installation was corrupted! (my original thread on it was here - New Vostro 1700 laptop! Why are there four partitions, and can I get rid of them?!)
I've really not liked Vista, and do want to get Windows 7 on the Vostro, but what I want to make sure before I pay out for Windows 7 is that I'm not going to have the same problem with that damn Media Direct button .....

I understand the upgrade version requires a previous version of Windows installed. But given the way Boot Camp works, I don't think its possible to have Windows installed if I want to install Windows 7 (or any new copy of Windows) to my Macbook.
I also know that there is a registry workaround should I encounter problems w/ the Win7 Setup program not accepting my key.
Anyway, my main question is will this upgrade media work for me if I decide to install it via Boot Camp?

This is what I have, and I imagine HP probably use the same drivers for most of its late model laptops on windows 7 for the touch activated media button i.e. the back lit strip above the keyboard just below the LED screen that let you activate WIFI, sound. playback..etc..
I have read from several posts that windows 7 install fine on HP laptop just that the touch strip driver does not work with the factory drivers.

Since updating to Windows 8.1 I have had little other than problems. It added a few useful features, but other than that made things worse in general.
At first the problem was barely noticable at all. I would rightclick on a media file and sometimes it would maybe take a second longer than usual to bring up the context menu. Over the last two weeks it got longer and longer. At first it was mainly only when rightclicking on a media file. I noticed a big change when I tried to rename songs and movies last weekend. WHen it took about 5 seconds to bring up the menu.
Since yesterday that went up to 8 seconds and I also started seeing it when right clicking on any folders, apps, or games. Anything really. Another strange thing, every now and then after I right click, it would wait 8 seconds, the screen would go blank almost like it refreshes, and nothing would happen. Sometimes it would even move icons back to their "default" places before I moved them. Which is another annoyance. This has NEVER happened before I updated to 8.1.
I have the HP Envy 15-j063ei
Windows 8.1 64-Bit
8GB RAM
1TB HDD
Core 17-4700MQ 2.4GHz
GeForce 740M 2GB

I recently bought a T530 with Windows 8 pre-installed. I want to create recovery disc(s). However, in the "Create a recovery media" wizard, I don't have the option of selecting DVDs if tick the option "Copy the recovery partition to the media". I have a bunch of DVDs lying around and I would like to use them. Not to mention that I don't intend to buy USB drive just for this purpose.

I have been sent 4 sets of Windows 7 Recovery Media from Lenovo over the past week and a half. These DVDs are unusable as they will not boot because they were created as non-bootable DVDs. When looking at the DVDs, they all just have 1 file on them - 0A44006.dvd. I was sent a set of the 32bit version and it has multiple files on it with Bootmgr and 6 directories and will boot just fine. The 64bit DVDs obviously were created and replicated without any of these files to make it a bootable DVD.

DVDs will load successfully and play, but BlueRays will not, even though this computer has a BlueRay player and the Cyberlink software to play them. It recognizes the BlueRay title, appears to load the disk and then returns to the initial screen and does nothing. When I click play, Cyberlink asks if I want to restart or resume playing. Either button I select returns me to the beginning of the process.

Using Defender Offline "Beta" as instructed on MS website for Windows8.1. Created the media on a USB drive, then on a CD. Manually selected boot device on the boot sequence page. Followed all the instructions to the letter, but the Defender Offline media won't boot on this new W540, either on USB flash drive, or on the CD drive.

I have a desktop HP Envy h8-1417c 64 bit PC and I recently updated to Windows 8.1 (from Windows 8 - which came loaded on the PC). After the update, Windows Media Player still works fine, but it will not accept new album art and information when I try to rip one of my new CDs to the music library. It searches the internet, and finds the correct art and information, but when you click accept, nothing happens. The CD selections simply stay blank. I can still see the older files info and art (prior to the update) so I know it has retained what was already ripped. I also have a music editing program called Gold Wave (which works with Windows 8) and it can no longer find album art. I also have iTunes loaded and have no problems finding album artwork and info with this program.

for the E6400 media bay (I hope that's what it's called, I'm referring to the location where the optical disk is). I'd like to add a SSD before my trip to overseas and I have a few questions about this:
1) what kind of SSD should I get? I'd like to get a 128GB or 256GB SSD. Is it any 128/256GB SSD or do I need to get a specific kind?
2) If I want the SSD to be the primary drive and a 500GB HD to be the data drive, do I need to put the SSD in where the HD is and then put the 500GB HD in the optical disk caddy tray? (I bought the newmodeus caddy tray)

I'm trying to get hold of Media Direct for the Dell 6000. I've searched quite a few boards and come across links to where it was supposed to be, but they've been old links.
I've also been able to download 80% of the ISO on a torrent I've found, but its now stopped as the guys who had 100% have gone off line.
I was hoping someone here has still got a copy of the ISO so I can reinstall it onto the laptop I've just replaced the hard drive with.

I just got an i9300, that I'm having fun setting up. I've already done a couple hardware upgrades (OUT; 1GB PC4200, IN; 2GB PC5300. OUT; 60GB/5400, IN; 160GB/5400). See "sig" for rest of specs.
I've got a copy of Windows MCE 05. I'd like to set this up with Dell Media Direct 3.0. I've done a ton of searching the forums here, and a few other sites. I've printed out several hard copies of "How To Install MD3" threads for reference.
OK...so, here's the crux. I need a copy of MD3. I "acquired" (nudge, nudge, wink, wink, say no more) a copy, and burned the ISO to DVD. When I first used it, it set up the partitions, and then gave a wierd error about "not being able to find the Media Direct PLAY button...". Setup halted in it's tracks. I ran it a couple times, same error. After the 2nd try, I exited out and installed MCE05.
My hard drive had the 47MB (EISA Configuration) partition on the front, my C: drive, followed by a 2.01GB "Unknown Partition". Looks right, but, both the 47MB and 2.01GB partitions are empty. 100% empty.
So, I install MCE05, all the drivers, Nero 7 and Cyberlink PowerDVD 6. Defrag. I then put the MD3 disk in, and let it do it's thing. The Installation Notice comes up, and then it halts IMMEDIATELY thereafter, giving an error of "This system is not supported by this Reinstallation DVD. Installation will now exit."
Are there different versions of MD for different machines/OS'es/etc?? What version do I need for my system/OS??
What are the chances that I can sweet talk Dell into sending me a copy, where this system is out of warranty and I'm the 2nd owner?
If the chances of that (above) are "none", does anyone have a copy of the "correct" version I can "borrow" so I can get this set up?
