Dell :: Ethernet After Resuming From Sleep/standby?
Nov 9, 2009
So I just got my Studio XPS 1340. Everything is good. Just installed Windows 7(clean install). But, there is a problem with the ethernet when the system resumes from sleep/standby.
I didn't test ethernet with vista. There seems to be no problems with Wifi resuming from sleep. Is this just a Windows 7 driver problem? I updated the bios, drivers, basically everything I can find I updated.
Still happening.
Also turned off "Turn this device off to save power" option.
Any ideas?

I have a DELL XPS L521X running Windows 10 technical preview.
I have been having an issue for a while that the computer automatically resumes from standby at seemingly random times. As of late, it is also staying on indefinitely (or until a low battery event at least), despite my settings in Power Options that specify standby after a given amount of time.
This happens when it is plugged in or not, and is (of course) particularly annoying when it is unplugged and in a case that isn't ventilated.
I have checked the system and application event logs, and don't see the kernel-power event when the system resumed, but I don't see any information on why it did so.
Also worth noting: I checked my LAN and WIFI adapter power management settings, and the "allow this device to wake the computer" box is greyed out.
specifically what hardware or software is causing a resume event? Do you know how to ensure that the computer sleeps after a specified period of time when on battery?

I have Windows 7 RTM running on my nc8430 laptop. It has been working great. The only issue is a standby problem. If I put the computer to sleep via the FN-f3 combo it goes to sleep like it should and wakes up like it should. My power profile is set to put the computer to sleep after 10min of inactivity. If after 10min I let the computer go to sleep on its own, upon resuming it from standby I get a black screen. The computer is on and everything is working with sound, just no screen.
I am assuming it is a possible BIOS problem or video driver problem. I have the most recent of each and have tried different video driver versions but no fix.

I'm about two week in after purchasing a Dell XPS 13 (L322X)... I've begin noticing the keyboard backlighting fails turn on after resuming (opening the lid) from sleep mode. Depressing the FN with the backlight doesn't remedy only a system restart does. Could this be the result of flawed keyboard drives? If so how do I get the drivers?

So my X220 with the Intel 6205 card is having issues reconnecting to WiFi when resuming from sleep or hibernation. It takes about a minute for it to do so, though occasionally it will reconnect right away. Maybe 1 out of 20. When doing a cold boot or restart, it connects immediately upon the desktop showing up.
This was not always the case, in fact when I first got my X220 in June, I have not had this issue.... In fact, I don't know when it started happening, but it was maybe a couple months ago. I just thought it was my old router going bad. Well I got a new router, and it still happens. I have the latest Intel WiFi drivers from Lenovo, and I even tried downgrading to the previous driver from Intel's site. Still the same problem. I tried setting a default profile in access connections, and that does not work. In fact, it behaves the same way if I totally uninstall access connections as well. In fact I tried this on three different brand routers, and I can reproduce it on all of them (Asus, Netgear & TP-Link) so I think this is not a router issue. Other devices in the house reconnect right away with no issues (iPhone 4, PS3, Mac desktop, Dell laptop).
I currently have BIOS 1.24, but this was happening with 1.21 and 1.23 as well. My X220 originally came with 1.16, and I haven't updated it until 1.21. Unfortunately I don't remember that far back, if the problem started occuring then.
There was a brief discussion about this in another thread, but it went nowhere so perhaps this will get more attention. At least one other user reported the same issue.
Here's a clip of exactly what happens. When i press the button or open the lid from sleep, the windows wifi icon will start spinning for a few seconds, then turn into an X. then only about a minute later, does it quickly connect to the wifi and I have full signal. Manually clicking on the icon and selecting the access point does not speed up the process. It will only connect when it wants to, about a minute after resuming from sleep/hibernation.

Apparently its a common problem on the SXPS 13 where the Ethernet adapter fails to work after the system resumes from sleep. It is caused by the NVIDIA chipset driver.
Can you check if yours is working correctly after the system resumes from Standby or sleep? If so, can you post what OS you are using? Which driver(Win 7 or Dell one)?

Cannot enter standby in the Studio XPS 1640, Windows Vista 64 bit.
Whenever I click on standby, the computer acts as if it will go into standby, but then goes immediately to the login screen again.

Does anyone know how much energy Dell's latest laptops use when in standby mode? I've tried looking on their website, but I can't find any definitive figures (I'm using a Precision M4400, if that helps).
Before I always used to hibernate or shutdown my laptop to save energy, but I'm curious if standby mode really uses much power or not.

I was trying to update my drivers, I went to dell website and got a few update for my drivers, but now, my computer won't go into standby or hibernate. If I try to go into standby, after I see the "preparing to standby" my computer goes black and the on light still on, then I can't wake the system up I have to press and hold the power button and reestart. When I try to go into hibernate mode after "preparing to hibernate" I see a blue screen with that says something like "an error has happened and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to my system, the problem could be caused by a new software or driver... etc" After I restart it says, your system has recovered from a serious problem and then it ask me to send a report error, I do and then my web browser and open this: [url]I know the problem was a driver that I was trying to update to make my computer work better but instead it messed up. How do I undo the updated drivers?

I upgraded my Studio XPS 13 to Windows 7 Pro RTM and Im using the latest NVidia drivers for my 9400M. Problem is that occasionally, going into or coming out standby does not work. Going into standby,
the screen may blank out and there is constant hard drive activity, but the system never powers off. Or, coming out of standby, the screen is just blank. Most of the time it works ....

I have an M4400 running W7 pro x64, and at work I have it docked and use both the laptop screen and an external screen (don't know if that matters).
Sometimes, not always but quite often, when I put it to sleep (aka standby) by using the start menu command, it behaves as if it goes to sleep, the screen blacks out etc, but it doesn't really.
And I realize this when I've arrived at home and pick it out of its bag, it is *hot* really hot and still running.

I have a dell i9300 and I want to know what i should do with it overnight. I have been turning it off at night and then turning it back on when i wake up. I am not to concerned with the effects this may have on the battery, I am more concerned with the effects it has on the computer itself. What should i do to ensure the optimal longevity of my notebook.

I have a Dell XPS M1530 Laptop (T8300, 3gb, 8600M GT, wifi-n, dual-boot Vista+XP, ...), and 4 times out of 5 , when I want to put the PC in StandBy mode, it reboots.
Obviously, it gives me the " Windows did not shut down properly ; Start in Safe Mode/ Safe with Network" etc etc screen, and you can understand I find this pretty annoying. It also does so when I put it in hibernation mode.
It does so only with Vista, and it never did with XP. I just reformatted (the Vista partition) and installed + updated every Vista component and it still does it.
At first I thought it might have had a link in applications being open and me standing the computer by, but figured that even with the fewest apps running, it still does it 4 out of 5 times.

I have an old Inspiron 6400 with Win XP, 80 GB, 2 GB RAM, Intel Core TM2 CPU. I want to install Win 7 Home Premium and use the laptop simply as a standby in case my newer Inspiron 17R 5720 is out of action. Is it possible to upgrade?
I don't care if the performance is sluggish - it's just a standby. It would only be used for emails and internet if my newer Inspiron is down. I used the Service Tag for the 6400 to look at the available drivers. For my Service Tag, the only drivers seem to be for XP or Vista.

Today my laptop didn't boot from standby. It had been in standby mode since last night.
It will not respond to any button presses and the power light is pulsing. The light with the spanner in it is constantly lit also. Ive tried removing the battery, only using AC etc. Ive held the power button for more than 30 seconds but nothing gets a response.

Does anybody have problems with standby or hibernation-function?
If my E6500 with XPprSP3 is switched to the standby-modus (via Fn+F1 oder by closing the cover) the screen stays black after wake-up with the power-button - and the system probably freezes

When trying to put e6400 on XP SP3 to standby, the screen goes black but I am not certain the laptop is asleep. USB device lights are still lit. When trying to wake the laptop, it will not wake up and if the screen simply went dark, it will not come on. I always have to push the power button and force a reboot.

I just received my new Dell Studio XPS 13 with the integrated NVidia 9400G graphics and came across a somewhat annoying problem.
When I put my computer to sleep and shut the lid, then as soon as the lid opens, the computer wakes up from standby.
I dont want it to do this and would rather press the button manually......

My new XPS laptop is just a few days old and I'd like not to kill it prematurely. What is current consensus on best practice to extend useful life? Shut it down after session completed (i.e., in AM when leaving for work) or leave in standby "sleep" mode? I leave my employers Dell Latitude computer powered up in a docking station during the week but power it down for the weekend. With current electronic semiconductor technology, is there a negative aspect on longevity (inrush current, for example) by daily shutting down and powering up?

I just had a new motherboard installed in my E1505 under warranty by a Dell Tech. They sent a new hard drive with it, with Windows XP already installed. I also still have my original hard drive. After the motherboard finished installing, my Standby no longer works...
actually it goes into Standby, but immediately wakes up, without me touching a single thing. Also, I can't lock my computer by pushing the Windows logo + L. Using that shortcut actually logs me off the user. I tried this with both the new hard drive and the old original one. Both of these things worked fine with my old motherboard.
I did a clean install of XP on the new hard drive, and still it doesn't work. So far the Dell tech that I've been talking with online and on the phone doesn't have the answer. I've been talking to him for several days now

I got a Latitude E6530 with an E-Port II a few weeks ago. In general it's great but I have had one annoying problem a few times:
The laptop is docked with the lid closed, and two external monitors, and an external USB keyboard and mouse connected. It's running Windows 7 Ultimate.
The laptop goes into standby after a few minutes of inactivity.
When I press the power button on the dock to resume from standby, the external monitors stay in standby mode and the mouse and keyboard don't power on (no num lock light or laser on the bottom of the mouse).
If I undock the laptop and open it, the screen stays off and it doesn't respond to keyboard or touchpad input, even after several minutes. However the power light is on and the hard disk light occasionally blinks. The only solution is to power off the laptop by holding the power button for a few seconds.
Note that this doesn't happen every time that the laptop is woken from standby, it's only happened 3-4 times in a month. The Windows logs don't show any errors either.

My Studio 1735 has been quite reliable, until today when I closed the lid and left it for an hour. When I came back it simply refuses to switch on at all, so I checked the battery (full charge) and the adapter (green light) so all power sources look good. Briefly, the button on the opposite side of the laptop from the power switch did show a white light, but that's died as well now! I removed the CMOS battery in case it was a logical problem, but it made no difference.

Running Win XP on dv2000t. The Windows shutdown menu has 3 options which are RESTART, TURN OFF and STANDBY. When I click STANDBY the computer appears to turn off. I can't get it to turn back on except by restarting with the power button. Is there some special key combination I need to know? Apparently the computer shuts off when I click STANDBY.
