so story is, i jump on a new game called Demigod, cpu running at 2.8ghz , after about 5-10mins of playing, i notice both my cores are running at 100% and the game lags like crazy, frame rate goes down really bad.
so i figure, hm, cpu bottleneck for a game.. strange.. lets have some overclock fun - i go ahead and set my x9000 to 3.4ghz, now the game runs great, my cpu cores dont reach 100% and the frame rate is great, all is good and great. only problem with running at 3.4ghz is that after about 30mins-1hr of playing, my m1730 powers down due to what i can assume to be overheating

I couldn't find an actual thread about this so I figured I'd start my own that can be easily picked up by search engines assuming your good selves can add some good info to it
I took the plunge after finding a final stepping X9000 OEM chip on Ebay for 269£ and I'd like to upgrade from my T9300. I'm fairly used to working on open laptops and I replaced the CPU in my old Inspiron 8000 with no problems so I figured I should be able to handle this swap as well.
However, I have a few questions.
1. I read in the M1730 thread "Dell is offering the X9000 but like ifti was saying it should be that hard of an upgrade because it looks like u can do it without removing the motherboard
the only thing is this may void your warrenty ud have to check that"
Has anyone successfully switched the CPU on the M1730, and can they confirm that you don't need to remove the entire board and the screws are accessible from the top of the board to remove the CPU?
2. What can I use to clean the existing compound that I will have to remove before applying my own compound (Arctic Silver 5)
3. Any other advice before I break open my M1730?

Well for the past couple weeks I have been having some problems with my M1730. My processor has been overheating and causing my system to blue screen. Before that was happening I noticed it was getting really hot (70+ just while browsing the web) so I was asking my contact about the penryns, if they were just a simple swap in or not. At first he told me that my motherboard did not support them but after I showed him that the new A06 bios says it handles new cpus and the penryns are the only new procs to come out for my laptop, that they should work just fine. He said he was going to check into it for me but while he was doing that for me (he was checking into it for me for about two weeks) my system started to blue screen and lock up. So I told him that I was having some problems and mentioned that some of my friends have the X7900 and X9000 and even have them overclocked to 3.4ghz and they weren't having the same problems so I thought there was a problem with my processor and asked if he could have someone look at it for me.
Instead he said he would just swap it out with either the X7900 or X9000, whichever one I preferred, and I picked the X9000 of course. Well a couple hours later he emails me back and said he doesn't know why but he is not able to put in an order for the X9000 but can for the X7900 and asked if I wanted that one instead. I told him that I really wanted the X9000 because it is the new 45nm processor and should run cooler then the merom and since I am having heat issues that the X9000 would be the best bet. I asked if he could try it for a couple days to see if he is able to get it for me. I am wondering if I should wait and try and get the X9000 or if I should just get the X7900?

it made quite a bit of differance. Now I'm contemplating going to the X9000 2.8Ghz.
Is there any reason I shouldn't? Will I see any differance? I'm basically trying to get my computer to run as fast as possible. Not sure why, just always have the urge to work on and improve things

I'm curious if anyone knows if these notebooks can be overclocked? If so, how?
I read a review that one laptop vendor allowed over-clocking via BIOS but I'm not sure if Dell does this also and was hopeful that those of you much more learned than I could tell me if it's possible on the new Dell 6300 64 bit with the Intel Core 2 Duo Extreme X9000 chip?

several people here who have been able to upgrade their SZ's to x9000 processors. I want to do the same but I want to know if it is as simple as putting the processor inn or do you have to do some modding. I am also interested in upgrading to a x7900 or t9500. Basically the x9000 is my first choice, x7900 is second and t9500 is 3rd and I want your advice as to what to do, and will I need to do any modding to put these processor in my SZ670?

So been shopping around and the only laptop that really has what I want is the XPS 16, looks good, big but not overly huge(have a 15.4 right now), great screen and good numbers other than that.
But whats the real experiences with it? I'll only get the RGB LED as thats the entire reason for me wanting it, I wont game on it, but I will use it for movies and things like that. Any experiences with it will be welcomed.

Pretty much the title. I know there are 4GB single laptop ram sticks out there. If the M1330 is running a 64 bit OS (such as Vista x64 or XP x64), can I put in two 4GB sticks and will they be recognised?

I browsed through both dell.com and dell small business and I was wondering what was the difference? Am I not allowed to order from dell small business if I'm not a business? Also which ones tend to have better deals if their inventory is same/similar?

Picked up a great deal on a 1730 with a 128SSD and 320 2nd drive - Does anyone know if the 120 will be faster than if I were to go with 2 7200 rpm drives? The price difference for the SSD is "UP THERE" so I at least want to know if its as fast as a conventional 2 hard drive raid zero approach.
Also does anyone have any links to spec's for the Dell 128SSD? Is it the Memoright 128GB.

when i start up internet explore for the first time, i get a thin line that run's right across my screen, but when i minimize IE and maximise it again its gone. it only seems to be there when i first start up IE.
this was a response i got from another forum.
"My psychic powers tell me you have a graphics card with poorly written drivers. You should check to see if there is an update available from the manufacturer. Then install it. Reboot. See if your problem goes away"
i have had a brand new motherboard fitted today, and this problem was there beforehand, i also have the latest drivers installed.

if you right click my computer, then manage, then reliability and performance, monitoring tools, then reliability monitor (whew!) you'll see a graph that shows how "stable" vista has basically been for you. i'm just curious what everyones out there is. my last one dated 3-2-08 was 4.86 out of 10!!!! i started at 7.6. my wife has a cheapo $499 compaq with vista basic, 512 ram, not even sure of the processor, and i checked hers. in almost a year, she has never dropped below 8 points! her $499 laptop, is more stable than the $5000 plus laptop i use! the lowest i got was 4.02. i'm now slowly starting to creep back up. all sorts of different windows errors and such.

Does anyone know which screens/laptops are compatible?
If there is a large range of screens that will fit I will most likely just buy a broken laptop with a good screen to fix it.
The service tag is 9TCL14J

Ok so the Studio 1737 premium display is the RGB LED display. Using LED's.
For example even high end HDTV's the most expensive $4,000 Samsung using LED back lighting lists a 2ms response time.
I have never seen such specs mentioned for the 1737's RGB LED display.
I know it has to be fast, because on my 22" Samsung LCD which is back lit using conventional CCFL has a 2ms response time.
and when I connect my 1737 to my 22 LCD via HDMI, I can tell that the response time, on the 1737 is faster, my guess is because of the LED's can adjust or turn on off faster than CCFL.
