HP/Compaq :: 2530p With 2 X Intel X18-M Raid 0 Face Melt
Dec 14, 2009
I have a 2530p with the 2.5" OEM 160GB spinner in the optical bay and 1.8" bay vacant. Although this would be completely ridiculous, I'm considering getting two 160 gb intel ssds. I am wondering the 2530p has support for raid 0 and if so, how to properly configure it? This combination would clearly result in the melting of faces and possibly my computer.
Also, has anyone seen X-18m G2's 80 or 160? Cant find them anywhere...

I'm really impressed with this computer (HP EB 2530p) but read in the review that the fan tends to get loud and that it get's fairly hot.
Exactly how loud does the fan get? I'm a student and I dont want to sit in a room with 200 other students looking at me and my loud laptop hehe. Is it really noticable/annoying when under medium load (word/excel + youtube perhaps)?
Also regarding these temperatures, does it get uncomfortably hot should you sit with it in your lap for an hour or 2?
I'm not sure if I beef up all the "cons" because I'm so picky, but if I am, please tell me to wake up :-)

I'm trying to install 7 on my 2530p. I checked on HP we site but no official drive for this OS. So I called the support and asked for more details. They said that there's no driver for the moment. Soon they will relase them. Now they suggested to use the vista buisness 64bit driver using the compatibility task. My question is about which driver should be installed and what is unnecessary.

I just got my 2530p. The problem with my 2530p is the fan noise. It is on constantly. I would think that the speed of the cpu fan should go up and down?

I am using HP 2530P at home and connect to wireless access point for accessing the internet services. Recently, I found my wireless connection icon in the system tray are shown incorrecly. actually the wireless controller card is conencting to the wireless router and no problem to connect to the external network (Internet), but the connection icon in system tray indicate the connection is disconnected like below. I am no sure it is a window vista problem or my HP notebook problem.

my 2530p
I finally fired up my computer, and instead of Vista it installed XP. In the box is a Operating System CD for WinXP Professonal as well and a Application and driver recovery DVD for WinXP. That should be the right CDs and only the OS on the computer is wrong. There's a Vista sticker on it, mind.
And no spamware? I got a trialversion of Office 2007 that I need to kick off again and the installation created a tiny 1GB partition which only holds some HP tools. Convenient. And the IE contains a spambar with google search, lots of AOL and some HP stuff.
Now I feel slightly annoyed that they added a UK plug to the parcel and not a European one eventhough I will need it anyway soon and for a longer time. Or maybe that is standard when asking for a UK keyboard and English windows?

Was happily surfing on my Studio XPS today when I spotted this:
At first I thought a component must be overheating inside the laptop but it's above the CD drive which I hardly ever use. What the heck could have got that hot to melt a couple of keys! I don't think I will be using the laptop on my lap any more.
Strongly worded email to Dell sent.

after lots of considering and looking for alternatives I finally ordered a 2530p today. After all, I think this is the best notebook for me.
I never bought a computer where a full windows version is not available on CD and thus never had bad experience with lots of stuff preinstalled.
How bad are the 'extras' on HP business computers in Europe? And do you have any advice on how to clear the computer up and what to delete?
looking at the order sheet I'm a bit confused regarding the OS
OS: Vista Business wXPP OFC Ready 2530p O/S
Restore Media: DRDVD Win XP 2530p Recover Media
Restore Media: OSCD Windows XP Pro Media
My guess is that someone forgot to update the order website

I just bought a 2530p, with 1.8-inch 120GB hardisk. The partition is assigned as below.
- 101GB for C:
- 9GB for D: (HP_Recovery )
- 1GB for F: (HP_Tools)
I would like to replace existing 120GB HD with larger one, and would like to ask some question.
1. what is the largest size of 1.8-inch hardisk for 2530p? I refer to "Service and maintenance information" manual, the hardisk size seems only up to 160GB, could I installed 260GB or even larger hardisk?
2. Is it neceessary to keep the partition of HP_Tools or HP_recovery?
(if I delete the partition 'HP_Tools' or 'HP_recvoery', can the OS be booted up?)

I finally received my 2530p today, and it's a thing of beauty
The only slightly annoying bit is that HP delivered a British wall contact instead of a general European one, probably because I ordered a British keyboard. But I might still have a suitable cable somewhere, or use an adapter instead.
Anyway, Vista is preinstalled on this computer and I could also opt for XP instead. The manual doesn't say how to do that. Can smoeone explain to me how to install XP? Someone mentioned earlier that I should make a backup disk for Vista anyway. So what's the general workflow? Get the computer up and running as is, make backup disk, somehow install XP over it?

Today I got my HP EliteBook 2530p in "FU432EA" configuration. It was important for me to have an optical drive, so i chose the configuration with the 120 GB 1,8" HDD.
The 2530p looks great so far and performs pretty well... If there weren't the extremely annoying noises coming from the notebook.
The HDD with its 5400 rpm (it's a Samsung HS122JF, very slow btw, not really faster than 4200 rpm drives) makes a clearly audible, very high frequency noise and turns on/off every 30-60 seconds resulting in clicking sounds. I can live with that for the moment, because I'll upgrade to some SSD in the near future.
But the second annoyance is the fan inside the laptop. Even when idling in windows with temps below 50 °C the fan turns on every few moments. Unfortunately I haven't been able to control the system fan or even read the actual speed. I tried Notebook Hardware Control, SpeedFan and HWMon, but neither of them reported me anything about the fan. I tried undervolting the CPU with RMClock (which doesn't really support the new Penryn CPUs) and got a few degrees less, but this wasn't enough to keep the fan quiet. In the BIOS there are no options regarding the fan, only some "keep fan always running on AC power", which I disabled.

My problem is that my 2530p won't come back from sleep mode; the screen stays black.
As seen in this thread, [url] this is a known problem.
It seems that switching from IDE to AHCI will do the trick, but I have no idea how to do that without causing an other problem. I use vista.

I just bought a refurbished Elitebook 2530p that didn't come with a wireless card, so I bought a "Broadcom 4322AGN 802.11a/b/g/n Wireless LAN adapter (Sangria) - For use in Most of World (MOW)". This WLAN card was listed on HP's parts page for the 2530p here.
However, when I installed it and connected the antennas, the computer doesn't recognize it at all when booting up. It doesn't even acknowledge the presence of a new device.

I am comparing this against the connector in the 2510P to see if there could be a possibility of retrofitting the 2730P connector to obtain a SATA output. The 4200RPM ZIF drive in the 2510P is ultraslow and ZIF (PATA) alternatives in SSD or 5400rpm HDD form are poor value for money. micro SATA is the way to go..
Found the HP Media Library has systemboard pictures. The 1.8" drive connectors for 2510P, 2730P and 2530P are here:
Though it is somewhat difficult to make out the 2730P 24-pin socket. Can anyone take a photo of it and link on here? Here's the one for the 2510p
.
More pics at [url]
We can see that the 2510P ZIF socket is very different to the 2730P systemboard connector. BUT! There is the unused 24-pin socket on the 2510P that looks remarkably similar to the 2730P 24-pin SATA connector. Could this be used to provide SATA on the 2510P?...........

I recently noticed that my 2530p (great laptop btw) runs about 10 degrees hotter (53-55C versus 40-45 C just idling) when it's in the dock as opposed to when it's just on my desk. Normally this isn't really a problem but when doing anything remotely taxing on the processor the CPU temp shoots up to 60-70C when it's in the dock.
So I searched around and there seems to be no mention of this anywhere on the Internet. I figured it might be an airflow issue. So, pulling the base off the dock it appears that the supposed vent through the right side of the dock (where most of the airflow is supposed to run) is blocked almost entirely by the sliding latch mechanism.
Is this just terrible design or is something broken? I considered drilling holes through the latching but it looks like there's flat cables running all over it.
Does anyone else have a 2530p with the 2400/2500 dock, and if so, do you have heatflow problems? Have you found anyway to fix them? I tried raising the dock up off my desk but that doesn't seem to help too much.
Bonus question: The S-video port on my dock doesn't work at all. Is this because the 2530p doesn't output s-video, or is my dock just broken?

I have a new 2530p here. When I start it up it shows a screen where I can choose what language I want to install of Windows Vista.
If I choose a language, can I later recover the laptop to it's original state, so I can choose the language again?

I'd have liked to run them in a RAID 0 config but not sure if I can? I know that in the US you were given the option of RAID HDD's?

I know that Envy 15 has the ability to use RAID using the Dual SSD option:
From HP website:
Versatile storage options include the ability to add two solid-state drives in a RAID-0 configuration to improve the overall speed of the ENVY 15 while providing excellent disk performance.
Now my question:
It's possible to use RAID 0 using two HD 7200rpm?
The default one comes with 500GB Seagate then I'll buy another one of this + the hd caddy and cable to install it.

Here's my story and, let's say, my analysis:
I bought a generic 2 HD sata2 RAID1 enclosure based on the chipset Silicon Image SteelVine 5744. It can be used in USB or eSATA2. This embedded chipset (named SiL5744) is known (understand "claimed") to auto-handle Sata I/II and host sata2 controllers that not support the port multiplier feature. The HD are two Samsung F1 1To. There's no jumper to rollback to SATA 1.5Go on them, you can only do it by flashing the HD's bios, however we don't need to do it as I wrote just before, the SiL5744 supports SATA 3Go natively.
The enclosure works pretty well with USB, but *not* in eSATA : the E6500 freezes/hangs just after the POST step (a potential driver issue with the installed vista 64bits is not the reason then). As soon has I disconnect the eSATA cable, the system recovers and continues as normal.
What I've tried/done so far :
Both E6500's BIOS SATA mode AHCI and IRRT mode were tested,
Intel Matrix driver and software was updated to the latest 8.7.0.1007 version (AHCI and IRRT),
The SiL5744 chip was upgraded to its latest firmware as well (in case of...)
In order to verify the esata cable, the HDs and the enclosure itself, I succeed to :
- Use the enclosure's RAID1 feature when using the USB connection, I could partition, format, and read/write on the logical volume
- directly connect *one* HD (Samsung F1 1To) to the E6500's esata port -(I have a sata2esata cable), Vista installed it and I was able to use it as normal, even the hotswap feature seemed to work fine (I unkindly removed it). I could so test both HD individually this way... On the enclosure hardware side, everything looks fine then.
An IMPORTANT thing : The E6500's ICH8/9-M sata host controller seems to support the Port Multiplier feature *ONLY* on sata port 0 -as a bubble message from the Intel Matrix soft sometimes shows up-, but this is exactly where the internal HD is plugged on the motherboard I found nowhere you can change the internal sata port ID (switch,bios,ect...). I think this is the key of the problem that seems to be a dumb port conflict, because the esata port is in fact the port sata 4 (the DVDRW drive is sata 1, dock's esata is 5 for instance). If somebody knows how to swap the sata port ID, I think I won't be toasted !

what the performance difference is between the Intel Core i7-620M and the . Intel Core i7-820QM. I always thought the quad core 820QM was faster, but on the hp website the dual core 620M is more expensive.
Is the 620M faster? And is it faster for specific things only?

I notice that the FAservice (Fast access) uses more than 1% of the CPU all the time. That is too much for me. Such a service should be near 0% as the welcome page is off.
Do you experience the same thing?
I don't uninstall it at the moment but if I can't find a solution I will do to not short my time on batteries soon.

Face login is a pain. It never works. How do I disable it? I have searched the manual, internet and contacted acer (they wanted £65 to answer and my laptop is only two weeks old!) I am about to do a factory restore in the hope that it will give me a fresh start with an option NOT to choose face or any login for that matter!

I'm new to Dell and all of a sudden a great many files have a blue clock face and red exclamation point on top of file thumbnail. What does it mean and how do I remove them. Can I remove them in bulk. I backed up my whole computer yesterday, but the blue clock and exclamation point still remains on many many files and folders.

I love my VGN-Z90NS (weight, form factor, power, RAIDed drives), but the lack of virtualization support (that is, Sony's disabling of the VT-x feature in BIOS/EFI so you can't run 64-bit guests) is starting to cut into what I need to do for my day job.
I've been looking arund for something relatively equivalent and looked at a bunch of options which were close in terms of the spec of the Z as well as size and weight (under 4lbs). For those who care, those are:
Hewlett Packard 2530p
Lenovo Thinkpad X200
Lenovo Thinkpad X200s
Lenovo Thinkpad X301
Toshiba Portege R600
I love the size/weight of the R600, but I've had my share of underpowered notebooks (even though max memory is 5GB, not just 4GB) and it's not as easy to change out the hard drive (technically voids the warranty). I've configured various Lenovos, but I really want the optical drive internal which means the X200 series is out, and I didn't like the overall look of the X301, plus for that, I'd rather get the R600 which is smaller and lighter and better looking. Not all of the Lenovo laptops offer a 9-cell (if I need it; I have one for the Z), and the Toshiba does not. A latecomer to the game was the 2530p, which is under 4lbs, can go up to 8GB of memory (and being PC2-6400, it's cheaper).
