HP/Compaq :: HDX 18t: Low Sound From Speakers
Sep 1, 2009
I just put in a DVD to test the speakers sound quality and noticed the sound is very low. Even when turned up via the touch controls the audio is barely audible (hardly one of the best laptop audios). Am I missing something, or did I get a bad apple?

Bought a new dv7-2000, custom built. Nothing spectacular
As soon as I received it, I formated the drive and installed Windows XP Pro SP3. So far so good. All drivers installed, everything working.
Except for one little detail : I have sound on subwoofer only, no speaker, not even on headphones, no matter what jack I plug in. Sub does turn off when I plug the headphones though.
I tried several IDT drivers, all act the same.

have you ever noticed, sometimes, a kind of popping noise coming from macbook speakers (I have the alu one) when you are launching a program that will require the use of speakers? (never happened in itunes, it occurred only when launching quick time videos or some videos / music from the web...)
As said before, it is not always occurring but it happens only sometimes. Is it maybe linked to the osx putting speakers in standby when not needeed for a while (it happens also with electrical supply) ? I read something on the net about a drawback for this behavior inside leopard, but is it really the case?
Moreover, this 'popping noise' intensity is constant whatever the preset volume of the speakers is, and, up to now, I have never heard it with the speakers set off.

My computer went through a standard update, nothing out of the ordinary and all of a sudden my audio doesn't work. I restart my computer and it works for a couple of minutes and then it stops. Ten minutes later it works again and then cuts off and so on, so forth.
Product Number: C8F10AV
Model Number:
I have Windows 8, 64-bit operating system.
I followed the direct HP support website to troubleshoot the problem and it told me to turn the volume up.

I have a DV6-265us laptop running MS Vista SP2. Recently, my internal Altec Lansing speakers stopped working. First it was the left speaker, then both. I thought for sure the speakers just died, so I ordered a replacement on EBay and just got and replaced it yesterday. BUT, I still don't have any sound. I can plug in external speakers into the speaker port and they work fine.
Now here is the strange thing. The speaker icon on the status bar is working exactly like it did before. Its not showing any red X or error at all. I can test the sound and the visual looks like its working, but there's nothing coming out of the internal speakers. I've gone to Control Panel, Device Manager and there's not red Xs anywhere. The device driver says its working fine, but I didn't trust it, so I did a HP driver restore and put back the original one that came with the laptop .. .Still nothing.
I've read the troubleshooting articles on the HP Support pages, but nothing has worked so far. My next step is either to replace the audio board or the power button board. I'm not sure about the audio board because I don't know how its tied into the speakers AND plugging in external speakers IS working. It's really a sub board and seems to only have the external ports for the microphone and speakers as well as the infra-red port. The internal speakers are plugged into the power button board and I thought that is where the problem might be since putting in a new internal speaker didn't seem to work. The microphone is also plugged into the power button board, but that seems to be working though.

As you prob realized already, the SOUND Quality sux on the 1535's..I was googlin' around and came across this fix on how to improve the sound.
[url]
I followed this dude's instructions, and just like that the SOUND drastically IMPROVED!! Sound is much more crisp, LOUDER, and improved bass.
All you have to do is use the Default Microsoft Vista drivers instead of the crap Dell Drivers..Just uninstall the Dell Sound drivers, and restart the machine..Vista should automatically put the default one's in..

Also, this solution doesn't work:"All u need to do, is right click Communication headphones, and click Disable.right click Sound button on taskbar> playback devices now you have speakers and headphones selected as default device, and communication headphones seleted as default communication device."The communication headphones have been disabled, but the speakers still play alongside the headphones.
I think part of the problem is that the playback device is "Speakers and headphones", but I can't split this into two separate devices for the life of me. if I disable "Speakers and Headphones" and enable "Communication headphones", the problem fixes itself and then introduces new problems: certain programs requiring sound output do not work, and the volume-changing buttons on my keyboard don't change the volume.
I have IDT High-Definition Audio CODEC (as a driver?).I can't remember what I did before this happened. I suspect it was the audio driver update, but that's a wild guess.

I just recently bought an HP - dv6 WF536AV Laptop. The sounds were proper from the built-in Altec Lansing speakers , till i updated the audio drivers via HP Support Utility.
Now i do not get any playback from the speakers mentioned above, but while plugging in my iPod headphones, there is audio in the headphones.
I've tried to reinstall the IDT Audio driver from the HP Support utility as well as one downloaded from the website :
IDT High-Definition Audio Driver 6.10.6289.0
[URL] ....
Yet, nothing is resolved. Of what i understood from various articles on the web, was that the new driver sets the headphone jack as the primary device for audio output and hence it does not reach the speakers.
Also , I'm pretty sure of this not being a hardware conflict since the laptop is recently purchased and i've rarely used the headphone jack.
Following are the details about my system :
• HP Pavilion dv6t customizable Notebook PC
• black cherry
• Genuine Window s 7 Home Premium 64-bit
• Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-350M Dual Core processor (2.26GHz,3MB L3 Cache)
• 512MB ATI Mobility Radeon(TM) HD 5470 sw itchable graphics[HDMI, VGA]
• 4GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)
• HP TrueVision Webcam and Digital Microphone

I've got W520 with Windows 7 + all the latest drivers.
About a week ago I run into the following problem:
1) The onboard speakers don't play any sounds. Instead they produce a single click when music playback starts. And that's it.
2) Music plays fine via the headphones. So the clicking sound occurs with the onboard speakers only.
I've got all the latest drivers installed. I tried to reinstall the Conexant and nVidia driver but it didn't work.

I am facing a strange problem with my Inspiron 6400, a tick sound is heard from the laptop internal speakers everytime I press a key on keyboard OR even if I press a multimedia key provided at the front of the laptop. This has never happened before and I am unable to fix it.
The sound starts coming as soon as the system boots up. I have both Vista and XP installed so I get an option to select the OS I want to choose on startup. I hear the sound on pressing any key of keyboard even at this stage before selecting the OS. This confirms that it has nothing to do with the OS but is something wrong at the hardware level or BIOS, which I want to find out and need your help.
Two days back there was a Blue screen with some error (which I couldn't recall) and the problem started after that. It asked me to shutdown the machine to prevent further damage. I forcefully shut it down and then it wouldn't boot until I pressed the ESC key several times. However after that, the system is booting up normally but the sound keeps coming. How annoying it is.
I tried muting the internal PC speakers from Vista/XP but to no avail.

On startup, there is a constant ringing sound from speakers or earphones.
I have discovered that if I momentarily plug a jack into the mic plug and remove it, the sound dissappears for the session until the next startup.
I have not been able to resolve this issue using any of the sound settings.

I got a new used laptop but there is no sound at all, the earphone jacks don't work nor the speakers. The mouse pad does not work well either, and, I cannot use my Logitech mouse via. usb port? I am getting ready to re-install because I though this might solve the problem. I tried installing some drivers for AC97 Sound Controller but that did not work either. The drivers would not install, then I uninstalled AC97 in Add-Remove Programs by accident, I was trying to Update it. Then I installed another AC97 from download.net. After this I tried again to Remove and re-install a newer driver but it would not uninstall or install.

My laptop has no sound at all - built in speakers, earbuds, not even when connected to my TV using the HDMI port (which is a separate driver).
2 weeks ago all sound was working. I was watching (and listening) youtube videos using my earbuds. I stopped a video and left my laptop unused until the next day. There were no installs or updates applied that I am aware of. The next day I closed Youtube and played words with friends and there was no sound. I restarted the laptop and still no sound.
I have read and worked through many processes and fixes found on this and other forums but have been unable to get sound working. I also attempted to restore my laptop back to prior to this issie but my restore points fail (corrupted).
Drivers: Both drivers are present and state they are working properly - they are current versions
ATI high definition Audio Device Date 5/6/2010 Ver 7.11.0.7706
IDT High Definition Audio Codec Date 6/17/2010 Ver 6.10.6289.0
I have uninstalled (checked delete the driver software for this device) and reinstalled multiple times.
I have uninstalled, shutdown, removed power and battery, held power button for 30 seconds, then repowered and let the drivers reinstall (they automatically installed upon boot I was not able to run the sp50642.exe that I downloaded).
I also used the HP Recovery tool and reinstalled the drivers to factory default
I have run Microsofts problem finder and it reports all is working.
I have verified there are no settings muted or disabled. When I test the speakers from"Sound and Headphones" Properties, I get "Failed to play test tone".
FYI - I have not done an update to the BIOS but I checked and mine is the updated version F.29 but the date is 14 days older then the downloadable SP55299 version.

How I assume the switch between headphones and speakers should work: I turn on music or anything esle and if no headphones are plugged in, every sound comes from the internal speakers. Now if I plug in headphones then the sound comes exclusively from the headphones. If I pull then out again the sound comes from the speakers and so on.
In my case the situation is the following: If I have no headphones plugged in and turn on music, then I hear if via speakers. If I decide to continue listening to that music via headphones and plug them in, then the music continues to come from the speakers, but for example the notification sound from outlook comes from the headphones. This works vice versa.
If I open, say youtube to watch a video, while having the headphones plugged in, I will hear the sound via them. If I now unplugg them, the speakers will stay silent.
What can I do that if there are no external speakers plugged in (headphones etc.) every sound will be played by the internal speakers, if I plug in some sort of external speaker it comes from them and if I unplugg it it switches back to the internal speakers?

I have a HP 15-r011dx Notebook PC with windows 8.1 and when on youtube or CNN videos, the speakers carack and pop. The commercials that CNN play prior to the story are fine as is a DVD or my loaded music. I relly do not want to reinstall. I have had the computer 3 weeks and I am not sure if it has been there from the beginning. I have updated everything from HP including BIOS and have tried a different browser and adjusted volume levels. Windows has done updates.

X220 tablet (about 2.5 yrs old, out of warranty) was working completely fine last night; this morning, no sound is coming from the laptop, either through speakers or through headphones (audio jack). I am, however, able to get sound through a bluetooth-connected speaker.
I had hoped this was a software issue. Tried uninstalling/installing all sound devices, updating BIOS, updating drivers, system restore to previous date, rebooting a million times, etc. No joy.
When I run the sound troubleshooter, it says that no speaker, headset, or headphone appears to be plugged in. The sound icon has a little red circle/white X next to it. When I try to plug in headphones, nothing happens -- does not seem to detect the event. When I press the mute and volume buttons on the tablet, no response.
Also, under Device Manager -> Sound, video and game controllers, it lists only "Bluetooth Hands-free Audio" and "Intel Display Audio". I don't think either of these is the normal X220 audio driver, is it? What else should be there? I downloaded the Conexant Audio Software from Lenovo's site (this is what came up when I searched for audio drivers for the X220 tablet), and tried to install it, but halfway through, it said the install failed because it couldn't locate the device for the driver.
This sounds like it's a hardware problem -- any way to verify? Also, which piece of hardware exactly? Is it the sound card (that's presumably integrated into the motherboard --> no easy fix)? I'm guessing it's not the speakers themselves since the headphone jack is also affected, but what is my best line of testing at this point to confirm that?

My Aspire 5738 is hooked up with AOC brand 27" HDMI external monitor by HDMI cable. This monitor is without any speakers. I made this monitor PRIMARY to 15" Aspire 5738 screen.
When I play a DVD/CD using ROM drive NO SOUND comes out from built-in speakers of Aspire laptop. But picture runs on AOC monitor which is not useful. Aspire 5738 has TWO sound processors in device manager. One is Intel (Default) and other one ReaLTek, both are HD quality.
"How to configure (If Possible) any of the TWO sound processors to HDMI" OR any other practical solutions?
