(1) Would it theoretically be possible to put a PGA 988 version of i7-640LM into an Envy 15, and
(2) Is it easy to upgrade the HDD's for a couple standard 2.5" SSD's?)
From I understand, most people's complaints and bad reviews about the Envy 15's battery life and heat are about the older version with the HD4830, and the new version is a bit improved. That said, I can't say that I approve of a 1++ lb extra battery pack for a laptop to really be mobile, and I bet it still does get noticeably warm... Right?
So, I started thinking - the main benefits of this laptop for me would be the graphics card and USB 3.0... Maybe I can sacrifice some other factors to increase battery life and decrease heat.
I took a look at a list of i7 mobile CPU's and found the i7-640LM... And while this model is mainly available in BGA form, I correctly figured that Chinese eBay sellers might have an ES version in PGA 988. That's a 25W TDP, low voltage, dual-core CPU that would surely eat up a lot less power than a quad-core, 45W i7. I'm not sure if that CPU's memory controller would allow using four memory sticks, but I don't mind 2x4Gb... It's just another way of lowering the power usage, heat, and weight. So, question number 1: Would such a "downgrade" theoretically work? Would anything with hardware and/or BIOS prevent me from doing this? Considering that I'd want USB3, I guess I'd have to buy an i7 model from which to do the downgrade.
And secondly, are the HDD slots just standard 2.5" trays (and ~9mm thick or even thicker) and easily upgradeable? I haven't done the research, but I figured I might get a couple of SSD's that are especially low power... Though I bet just about any SSD's would be a better than HDD's.
Got Win 7 installed, all went well, boots and runs. Need drivers for Network, Chipset, USB, and some unknowns. Have tried the Intel HM87 Express drivers they didnt do much and the Intel ethernet drivers with same resuts. Win 7 is needed for some SMB SW compartibility issues.
have a HP ENVY TouchSmart 15-j005se laptop running in Windows 8.1 Sinle language. I already have a purchased Windows 7 Professional x64. I tried to downgrade my OS to Windows 7 Pro. I prefer in UEFI installation, so create a OS installation USB in UEFI mode in GPT partition and enabled legacy in BIOS. Then the installer is booting from the USB device and everything is going well till it reaches to the HDD partition window. I can't see my HDD on the installer window. I already have a HDD with 4 visible partition, C (OS), D (Data), E (Recovery) and 100 MB system in FAT 32. i want to format only my C, because D contains all my data backup. I tried to browse intel Storage driver, still it is not detecting my HDD.  I really want to switch back to Windows 7 Pro.
When I downgraded from win 8.1 to win 7 I noticed there were about 11 items with problems being displayed in Device Manager. These ranged form network and ethernet to PCI , USB and various others.  NVIDIA indicated it could not load until the Intel stuff had loaded first. That wasn't in DM, it cropped up when I attempted to load some of the drivers manually.  I really don't want to guess at what's gone wrong here but could if have something to do with hardware set up for win 8 being used with win 7 drivers etc?
Would it be straight forward to clean install windows 7 on to my HP ENVY m6-1205sa? Will all the drivers be found easily and will all the HP software be easy to install like HP Advisor, fn key control, simple pass, cool sense, drive guard and the like?
I wanted to downgrade my new HP ENVY 15 TouchSmart 15-j023ea to Windows 7 because it's more familiar/usual to me, but unforunately I've noticed that my laptop does not appear in HP's driver list  Also, recent Envy 15 TouchSmart models do not have windows 7 drivers (At least this is what I've seen)  My laptop came with Windows 8 Installed. I installed my windows 7 on this machine and realised I have NO drivers for it... That's the reason I came back to windows 8 right now, and try to find a solution.  I really want to downgrade to windows 7 x64. Are there any drivers for this OS?
I have an HP Envy j011dx that came with Windows 8 Home Edition(64b9t). I put in an SSD and upgraded the ram and installed Win 7 Pro(64bit). Everything is working great except the control keys don't work. When I hit the left ctrl, I get, [9- and the right ctrl, I get, l; I have searched and tried a few different drivers and have looked at some posts about downgrading to 7 and haven't seen anything on this issue. I have ran all windows updates and tried several different drivers. I put the old HD in with W8 and it works so it isn't a hardware issue. I originally looked at this post before doing the downgrade and it gave me the confidence to move forward with putting Win7 on. I have until Friday to take this back to the store if I can't get it working. I have also checked the region/language settings.
my sisters new computer out of the rubish bin after she threw it there in disgust and frustration at the W8 operating system... Her daughters disabled and uses specialised mobility software that works well with W7 but not W8...  Looking for a complete set of drivers so we can install Win 7 and save the day (and this computer from an untimley death)... here are its specs...                Operating SystemWindows 8 64-bitCPUAMD A4/A6/A8/A10 79 °CRichland 32nm TechnologyRAM15.0GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 809MHz (11-11-12-28)MotherboardHewlett-Packard 198A (Socket FT1) 29 °CGraphicsGeneric PnP Monitor (1920x1080@60Hz)768MB ATI AMD Radeon HD 8650G + 8750M [code]....
i have everything except the audio working properly. after installing all the drivers i can find i end up with a second hd audio driver with the yellow question mark and no driver i try will install to fix it. i start with 2 hd audio drivers the conextant fixes one of them and the modem one is also installed.. what the heck is the other one for? i did use the microsoft one first then the hotfix for sp3 then the conextant and no matter what that extra one will not go away.. also no audio will play in media player or startup sounds etc..
I'm trying to install windows XP Pro 32-Bit on an hp notebook (dv7-3160us) but am getting the blue screen of death. I've tried to use nLite following other threads but none of the sata drivers are working for me.
I bougth a Hp dv4-1275mx, and I need to Downgrade to xp because I coldn't install a software in Vista ... please Someone can Help me?? I just intalled the xp 64 bits, My video, Sound, Wireless and network... works very well but I can't find the SM bus Controller and other devices...
to successfully downgrade from Vista to XP on this machine?
If so can you supply a posotive web link where to find the right drivers,so all devices in the device driver section are activated & don't have any exclamation marks present.
I know there is a thread on HP's website & its not very instructive,it seems a bit hit & miss.
If you get it right ,you get it right!
I managed a couple of tries, but always ended up without a network controller &
I have a dv9000(dv9316ea) and i downgrade bios from F.26 to F.16 because overheating problems. After i downgrade i turnt on and after the windows xp screen appert it shut down. I try reinstal Windows but when windows start to install it shut down.
i've completed the downgrade of vista to xp successfully Except for the OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller exclamation point!
using siw.exe i see it's an: OHCI Firewire Ricoh Co Ltd R5C832 IEEE-1394 Controller. i've tried downloading every ricoh driver i can find and none of them have any inf files showing anything IEEE. the rest of the card reader files are there just no 1394...
I'm shopping for laptops right now and I'm pretty much stuck between these two. My main question for the 14 is will it be able to do full hd? I know 1920x1080 is a bit much to ask for on a 14.5" screen but I haven't been able to find a solid answer for this question. The 14 has more features and the internal cd drive is a plus, but not a dealbreaker for the 15 since the cd drive isn't used too much. Taking out price, which one would be a better buy?
I have a couple of questions about the Envy v2. I'm certain the answers are somewhere in the massive owner's thread but it's way too long to want to go through at this point.
My questions are:
1) Audio quality of external speakers. Is there enough bass in them? Do they sound "tin-y"?
2) Noise from the fan when the GPU is in high use. How loud is the fan? Has anyone put a decibel meter to it?
3) Temp of the GPU. My Studio 15 is hitting a high of 70c when running and was wondering how the newer ATI is.
The first I heard about the Envy line was that it was a gorgeous laptop with a great display and above-average speakers. However, it was fundamentally flawed with a horrible trackpad and overheating issues(present in the 13, but further aggravated in the 15). After the spectacular fail of a release, I dropped the Envy out of consideration.
To the present, I've recently started looking at a huge array of laptops and have taken the Envy into consideration again. From what I've heard, the Envy 15 is in its second generation(I need a full-HD laptop and won't be considering the Envy 13). It now comes equipped with a i5 processor and the HD5830.............
I pulled the trigger and purchased an envy with these specs,
• Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit • Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-720QM Processor (1.6GHz, 6MB L2 Cache, 1333MHz FSB) w/Turbo Boost up to 2.8 GHz • 4GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm) • 320GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection • 1GB ATI Mobility Radeon(TM) HD 5830 Graphics - For i7 Processors • 15.6" diagonal Full High Definition LED HP Ultra Brightview Widescreen Display (1920x1080) • Webcam Only • Intel Wireless-N Card with Bluetooth • HP Color Matching Keyboard • 6 Cell Lithium Ion Polymer Battery
Tech specs known at the moment: - Intel CPU - Windows 7 OS - Lithium Polymer battery with optional extended external battery - Interfaces: HDMI, 2xUSB, hybrid jack audio
How does the 1/6 GHz processor stack up against the more traditional core duo? Is it roughly equal to a 2.53 GHz processor? I love windows 7 and might trade my Macbook Pro for one.
HP's envy 15 line with the ATI 5830 GPU (i7-720/820). I do have one big concern however, and that is heat. Could anyone post their max GPU / CPU / HD temps they usually get while running an intensive game / benchmark?
I need to connect my HP Envy 15 to my TV`s VGA port, and I'm looking for the best alternative. This is because I only get a stretched picture when I connect it to the DVI port through a HDMI > DVI-adapter.
HP has an official HDMI -> VGA adapter. What's people experience with that? Perfect? Problems? I see that Envy 15 is not listed as a supported model for it, but does that matter?
