HP/Compaq :: How Is AnEliteBook Mobile Workstation Going To Feel For A ThinkPad Owner

I really like the new EliteBook 8450w and 8470w and I think it is time to replace my Thinkpad W500. Can anyone clue me in on how my experience might be different? I know plenty of people with consumer HP laptops but I don't expect it should be anything like that.
How is the noise (my Thinkpad is very quiet)?
How is the "feel"? The plastic body on my Thinkpad makes it feel cheep for what it is.
How are the hinges?
How is the keyboard? I absolutely love that they fit a num pad in the 15"
How is the trackpoint?

From all the specs listed on this machine it should be a CAD powerhouse, however it seems that there are a number of people on the net reporting lots of driver issues when trying to run CAD software.
I'll be running things like Solidworks and some other engineering aps that use some 3D modeling and am wondering if there is any kind of a consensus yet as to weather this machine is good to go or not. This machine will be used for work, so I don't want to mess around with something that will be crashing all the time.
Is it just the Dell bloatware that is causing the issues? If I reformat and reinstall the OS how difficult is it to find all the proper (stable!) drivers to get this machine up and running again?

I have an M6300 Mobile Workstation that does not turn on. The green "On" indicator goes on and then the Cap Lock indicator just blinks. The screen never turns on and I never see the Dell opening splash screen when starting the computer. I have to hold the power button for over 20 seconds to turn the unit off.
What is going on with this computer especially what the blinking Cap Lock indicator means? Can I guess that it could be a hard drive problem because it tries to start, but never does and hangs with a blank screen, a Blinking Caps Lock indicator and the "On" indicator on steady?

Using Defender Offline "Beta" as instructed on MS website for Windows8.1. Â Created the media on a USB drive, then on a CD. Â Manually selected boot device on the boot sequence page. Â Followed all the instructions to the letter, but the Defender Offline media won't boot on this new W540, either on USB flash drive, or on the CD drive. Â

I recieved the W540 a few days ago, and I see there is a slot behind the battery for a SIM card, I tried using my SIM card and I still can't use mobile broadband. Can I use mobile broadband on the W540? do I need any drivers? and if I can't use it, can I buy something like this for the expresscard slot and insert the SIM in the slot behind the battery?

I have L440 with 64-bit Win7. Earlier experienced major WiFi connection problems, which were fixed with BIOS and WiFi card driver update.

Briefly after that Wireless Radios Master Control no longer lists Mobile Broadband, it only shows 802.11 Wireless/Wimax and Bluetooth.Â

Windows Network Connections lists "Mobile Broadband Connection" as "Not connected, N5321 gw Mobile Broadband Driver. Diagnosing this connection suggests to "Turn on mobile broadband capability", which I cannot do as it is not listed in the Wireless Radios Master Control.

I have a new X240. It has a sim card slot on the right side. I am running Windows 7 Enterprise 64 bit.

it seems that the x240 does not recognize wwan hardware. I can't find it in the device manager. It doesn't connect to any network when I insert a SIM card. Also, no unknown devices show up in the device manager. I installed the following drivers in an attempt to fix the issue:
-Ericsson N5321gw wireless WAN
-Sierra Wireless 7355 - Gobi 5000

... but no success.

I also tried running commands in cmd window to check the status of the wwan:
-netsh mbn sh int
-netsh mbn sh cap int=*

... but I always get the same message: "Mobile Broadband Service (wwansvc) is not running"

I am starting to think that having a sim card slot does not neccessarily mean that the x240 is Mobile Broadband capable.

I am trying to share my 3g connection to my other devices. My internet is working on my laptop. I've enabled mobile hotspot in access connectoins, I've connected a 2nd device and the device is properly showing up as a connected device. But when I try to load a webpage on my 2nd device, it times out. I tried also with other devices (ipad, android phone), but to no avail.

I have a T420 Thinkpad and have 2 external monitors connected; Â one using VGA into the docking station and one using DVI into the docking station. Â The laptop does not recognize the mobile PC display as an option when I attempt to extend to a 3rd monitor. Â The ultimate goal is 3 monitors extended: Â 2 external and 1 (the laptop display). Â Is this possible?

After researching a portable laptop with good battery life, and fast processer speed I choose the best buys blue label 3510nr laptop. The screen was gorgeous, and I bought it to get adapted to vista. One the volume of the speakers is clear for a laptop this size inside windows looking at videos or playing music baqck but strangely enough when viewing DVD movies the volume is very quiet. When the computer first started a DVD is went from 0 to ffering several numbers for US language and it plays in US mode but I wonder what this was. Also my movies downloaded from utube and various sources throughout the years ran fine on XP and xp PRO but 50% only will play in AVI not the movie in windows media player. Also I am perplexed at how strange the new Media player is compared with earleir versions that ran under XP. Waht can I do about seeing my movies, and possibly whats up with the sound as Ive checked all settings in control panel. Im scared to even call HP as their customer service horribible.

just picked up a new DV7-1270ca and did a clean install to Vista Ultimate 64B. I noticed that a few of the apps that were on the machine are missing and can't be downloaded? Can anyone tell me where to find these apps? I did make a set of recovery disks prior to deleting the recovery partition but they don't seem to contain files that are accessible unless one does a complete recovery...which kind of defeats the whole purpose of my intentions.
I notice that i don't have the control panel for my sound anymore. Not sure if this is related but i think since i can't individually configure my speakers without this application i notice some crackling sounds in movies i play which i am assuming to be because the subwoofer is set too high?
I am also missing complete functionality of the keys that reside directly above my keyboard. The keys work, but i notice i no longer see a visual screen confimation and get the clicking sound when i access them? The mute button should also turn amber when i mute the machine but it no longer does. I did check HP support but the only file they had was HP MediaSmart SmartMenu Update which is only an update according to the Readme. It states that i must first have HP MediaSmart SmartMenu installed for the update to work but HP does not supply a download link for this utility?
There are also a few other apps that i can't remember the name of that are missing i know.
Has anyone else done a clean installation?

I recently got a dv7 (17.3") and I've been looking around for a good notebook cooler. The current cooler is not for this size and was wondering for any options available out there.
I've heard of the the Zalman-NC2000 but I'd have to "reposition" it to use it's capabilities. My next option would be the "NZXT Cryo LX". I am considering getting this one but would like to have other alternatives before I commit to it.
I use this laptop for gaming and photo/video editing so portability would be a plus.
Also, any good messenger bags for my lappy? I'll need space for my cooler and wacom tablet. I've been looking around for a long time as this and some were just a tad "tight" fitting in.

i downgradeed my new HP Mini from win7 to xp pro.
but i had a problem now, it seems the system dont recongise when i insert my mobile sim card after i had installed Qualcomm Mobile Broadband Drivers & HP connection manager.
what make things worst, the connection manager actually unable to install complete due to an error msg: no WWAN card found! (Which i did insert)
I did check with the guides/ FAQ in HP site. but i cant find any modem in my device manager.
The only mistake i made is i forgot to check if this part is working in win7 enviroment before i do a downgrade.

Just had to share my experience with HP's Bluetooth mouse they currently offer because I can barely find any information regarding their mouse, just that they offer it and the specs. I just recieved it, I've gotten about an hour or two of full use with it after an awful installtion on Windows 7. So yeah my thoughts so far, pretty nice once you get it working.
Another thing, if you have EPP discount, or Academic discounts, and some other coupon codes you can get this at a nice deal. I was able to get it for about 44$ with a retractable mouse (20$) and free shipping at that point. So I got about 81$ (including shipping) worth of stuff for 44$, almost 50% off with all the discounts I had. Not bad I would assume for a nice looking mouse.
I'm just trying to provide an informational post with this mini-review. I hope it helps some people who are looking for a BT mouse.
Installation
In a couple words, pretty bad. Being bluetooth, I'd thought I'd fire up my bluetooth adapter, then just hit pair using native Windows, and let Win Update do it's thing if needed. Everything went through fine, choose no pairing code, and things installed, but things didn't work. Threw in the disc, followed instructions, no worky still. After a restart, and trying again, seemed to work....

I've been a diehard thinkpad fan for years and I'm looking to upgrade from my T60p. I love the build quality, but I've been reading too many issues with the FireGL V5700 in the new W500 series. Moreover, I've read good things about overclocking the Quadro M770 to get closer to the M1700 speeds. So I'm now looking at the Dell M4400, normally I abhor the chassis construction of Dells, but the all magnesium casing of the 4400 series looks very good.
First, coming from a thinkpad, will I be satisfied with the build quality of the Dell?
Second, I'll be primarily using autocad, rhino and 3ds Max and have a question about the effect of screen resolution on the acceleration of the viewport displays in the various programs. Normally, I'd get the highest resolution screen possible, but will there be significant performance degradation from sxga+ (1440x900) to the wuxga (1920x1280) display when using these viewport accelerated programs due to the more demanding resolution?
Third, considering that the system uses DD2 memory, will I be able to upgrade the cpu to other Core2 ES chips that you can find on ebay? It looks like these chips use pins, I haven't been keeping up to date with the new mobile intel chips, are they all pga rather than bga format now?
And finally, when can i except some sort of deal on these systems on either the Canadian or American sites? I've been seeing a lot of 30% deals on inspirons and xps systems, but not on the precisions.

I keep getting the error  "Required CD/DVD drive device driver is missing" whenever i select to install windows.
I have my 2x 250gb drives in Raid 0 Â but i keep getting this error all the time, any kink to a driver ?

I own a Dell Precision M4800 Workstation running Windows 8.1 64-bit and the problem is that when I type text, no matter where (address bar, Office, iTunes, etc), and go to move my cursor immediately after, it takes about 3-4 seconds of me swiping on the touchpad to get it to move.

I posted a few times in other threads and received a lot of good advice on which laptop to buy. This led me to the e6400 which I ordered from the outlet.
Received it over the weekend and got it up and running. Though not as stylishly groundbreaking as some, it has a nice sleek, cool look.
It is a business laptop afterall. I will agree with others on the speakers, pretty poor, even for a business laptop. But, other features are nice.... backlit keyboard, screen, keyboard layout/size

I just purchased a tt290yab with 1.4ghz blueray and all the trimmings. So I though I would post and introduce my self...
After owning a vaio P as my sole machine for a year this thing flys even with vista installed and untweaked.
I was wondering if anyone had any tips or advice, things I could tweak... Best video playing software etc.. ?
Also my laptop came refurbished and has the noise cancelling capability but I don't have the headphones. Anyone know where I can get some? Or the part number for them so I could call sony? I tried the ones from my vaio P but they dont work.

I am from Belgium and since yesterday a proud owner of a m1730
After weeks of surfing the net to get the best bang for buck I got myself a brand new m1730 with sli 9800m gt, 6gb ram, a 2,5Ghz duo, blu ray, etc... for just 1839€. Believe me this is very cheap for this laptop in Belgium.
I also game on my Imac (which I bought to do mostly Lightwave and 3d coat) from 2008 with a 8800gs (in reality a 8800m gt) and 3,06 ghz core2duo .....

I have had a major problem with my M1710 having a fit when running on batteries!
theres a slight flicker when running aero on vista, but the computer has a major fit when running Studio 11 from pinnacle.
have had a great deal of discusion with dell and Tech support with out success.
they suggested new mother board and 7950gtx card!
anyway through reading alot of posts on the forum i tried increasing the clock speeds of the 2d setting on the graphics card
the core is now set at 150 and memory 200
i tried it at 100/150 as suggested on another post.
However 150/200 has created significant performance increase when editting on pinncle studio 11! and vista areo runs smooth as silk
Increasing the Clock speeds cures the flickering problem!

I just received my new Vaio Z11 laptop a few days ago. I'm very satisfied with my purchase as it's my first ultra portable laptop. I have the i7-620M version with the 1920x1080 screen and 256GB SSD (4x64gb).
I have a few concerns though:
First, Is it safe that I make a clean install of W7? My Drive came with a single C Drive partition but I'd like to partition my drive into C and D drives. Are there specific tools to use for SSD's?
Second thing is regarding the Fingerprint Scan. I have been able to apply it on Windows Logon, and have also set it for Power On mode, but unfortunately when I turn on my laptop it doesn't ask me for the finger print it only does that at the Windows Logon screen. I have checked the bios and saw nothing that has Enable finger print or something of that sort, there was just a clear finger print option.
