Nov 11, 2009

I just received a new T430 less than a week ago, and ever since I first handled it, the left palmrest has been making clicking/snapping sounds even under light pressure. This region of the palmrest appears to be above the SmartCard reader. Video of this phenomenon is below.

HP/Compaq :: DV3T And Bluetooth-hot Palmrest

Nov 14, 2009

when I use my HP Bluetooth mouse the right palm area of the laptop gets really hot. Has anyone else experienced this? Is is normal? That area does not seem to get hot when using the trackpad, just the BT mouse.

I think I'm going to switch to a non-bluetooth wireless mouse.

HP/Compaq :: HP Dv4 Heating

Jan 3, 2009

I recently purchased the highly touted HP dv4-1155se from Best Buy. I am very pleased with it so far, and have found 64 bit vista much less of a pain than I thought.

With that being said, the only thing I am worried about is the heat issues - it seems to get very hot when playing a game or intensive graphic operation. I was using CPUID Monitor, and the temperature of the AMD Turion X2 peaked at 82 Celsius. I assume this temperature isn't normal? Is this temperature hazardous for my computer? Do you feel like it could go even higher? I feel like it should handle heat better than this, especially after playing a game for only 30-60 minutes.

HP/Compaq :: HDX 16t Heating

Dec 3, 2009

I bought an HDX 16t back in may, and have loved it.

But I notice, after installing Speedfan, that this thing gets VERY hot

even propped up a half inch off the desk, playing any game that's demanding gets the thing to a blistering 96*C... WAY too hot for a laptop.

Now here's the interesting thing, when it hits 96* it stays at 96*, like the fan kicks into turbo mode or something.

is this a defective product? or do all 16t's have this issue?

and if it is an issue I can fix, what are some ideas? besides getting a cooling pad, I don't really like the extra bulk under the front of the laptop. But for fixing the comp, should I mess around with some setting somewhere to make it kick into turbo mode at a lower temp? (like 88), should I under volt it? it's a new laptop with no trapped dust.

HP/Compaq :: HP Pavilion Dv9000 Over Heating

Apr 9, 2009

While playing WoW the FPS is from 15-65. When it cools off, ill get a great FPS and can play it fine but it will quickly heat up and drop for 20-30 minutes at a time. Right now im using a cooling pad but it doesnt help much at all except to give me that 45-60 FPS time for about 5 minutes. The bottom gets so hot at times it can literally burn my skin, I have a couple of marks to prove it.

HP/Compaq :: HP Dv5t Left Palm Rest

Jan 16, 2009

I know the HP dv5t's hard drive is on the left side , but is not located near the palm rest...instead it's near the battery compartment, just below it.

So what is under the left palm rest? Is it the GPU? CPU? It's pretty hot when in "High Performance" mode, but slightly warm when in "Power Saver" mode.

HP/Compaq :: Laptop Shuts Off With 18% Battery Left.

Mar 23, 2010

I updated the bios which fixed other issues. I updated the drivers and did all the win7 updates to rule any of that out. When teh laptop gets down to 18% it just powers off instantly. It does not go through a normal shutdown process or hibernate. I can power it back on and it shows 18% battery left. Is the battery going bad? I dont think this machine is barely a year old yet. I have no problems on wall power. Could it be a Win7 power setting? Just surprised win7 would slam the power off like that.

HP/Compaq :: (DV7T-1285DX) Subwoofer = Left Speaker

Feb 19, 2009

I just recently picked up my new DV7, wiped the drive and re-installed Vista Ultimate x64. The machine itself runs great, but after installing all the drivers and the most recent bios, I hit a strange snag- I have my right channel speaker, works fine. But my left channel isn't coming out the left speaker, but out through the subwoofer. I've tried uninstalling the IDT codec and letting Vista use it's own driver, same deal. Re-installed IDT, same deal. I get no sound at all through the left speaker, and Vista only recognizes me as having 2 speakers.

HP/Compaq :: Grinding Sound Coming From Top Left Vents

Feb 10, 2010

So a few days ago, my computer just all of a sudden began making a
strange "grinding/crunching" sound which seems to be coming from the top left side of the computer. The sound is very clear especially from the back left corner vent. The noise seems to come and go but still has me very worried. I've read this noise may indicate a dieing hard drive, however tests came by negative and also the hard drive for this notebook is in the middle, not toward the top left. Anyway, I recorded the sound twice and was wondering if you could take a look and tell me what you guys think (you might wanna turn your volume up). I have an HP Dv7t

Sony :: Palmrest Warranty

May 5, 2010

I've never had a Vaio but I just wondered, does Sony replace the palm wrests under normal wear and tear?

I ask this because I hear a tiny bit of creaking in my right palm rest and the computer is only a few weeks old. I am worried this will get worse.

I also purchased and invisible shield to put on the palmrest but what is Sony's policy on palm rests?

Apple :: Palmrest Unibody MBP Fading

May 21, 2009

I was cleaning my MBP today and I notice that at certain light angles, I can notic fading/discoloration in the finish where my palm normally rests. It's sort of the same effect as rubbing fine sandpaper over a painted surface.

I took pictures but it can't be noticed in pictures.

I think an investment in a palm gaurd would be worthwhile.

Just FYI.

Apple :: Palmrest Stain On White MB

May 27, 2009

I just made the long-coveted switch to the Mac world and I ended up getting the 13" white macbook just this past Sunday.

Long story short, I had to fill out a questionnaire for something, pen had spilled some ink into my hand, unknowingly, and I went back to my computer to finish typing up this report, took my hand off and then BLAMMO, blue ink stain.

I did a search and saw recommendations of toothpaste and isopropyl alcohol. Would these be good to try out or are there other remedies you guys can teach me?

Apple :: Palmrest Paint And Temp

Feb 26, 2009

I swung by the apple store recently, and checked out their 15" mbp (since the 17" wasn't/isn't in store yet). I put my hand over the palmrest to check out the keyboard layout and that particular laptop's left side palm rest area was pretty darn hot!

This brought up 2 concerns:
1) With the heat and the skin/oil contact with the aluminum surface, will that ruin the paintjob faster? is there even a paintjob or is the silver color the aluminum's natural and only color?

2) Regardless if the paint comes off or not, is there a way to make it cooler and more comfortable to type/game on? For those that play fps games or WoW, we all know our left hand is pretty much in the same spot, and if our wrists are constantly getting a spa treatment, it's not going to be very comfy. I know there was that ilap whatever thing you place under the laptop to diffuse the heat from concentrating on your laps, so I wonder if there's something like that for the hands.

HP/Compaq :: HP DV7T Quad: Audio Is Louder From Right Speaker Then Left Speaker

Mar 1, 2010

The right speaker in my notebook is louder then the left one is. The only way to compensate for the problem is to lower the "balance" in the sound properties for the right speaker (I have it all the way down to 70 if you can believe that!) Now my audio sounds even between the left and right speaker. I think it's ashame that seems to be the only fix for the problem. Not sure if this is a driver issue or a hardware issue.

NVidia installs audio drivers to the computer when installing the video drivers (which I still don't understand why...I thought NVidia was a graphics company?) Then I install the IDT drivers/software afterwards. HP has verified that this is correct so everything on my end is up to date...minus of course offical drivers for the 320M video card that everyone is still waiting on!

Dell :: Studio 15 (Heating)

Dec 6, 2009

I've had my Studio 15 for 10 months now and it has always heated up very soon after startup but lately it has been getting so hot that it burns to put my hands on the palm rest or the touchpad.

In the last few days it has also been switching itself off randomly which I think might be from the heat. When it turns back on I get a blue screen with a memory dump and it doesn't let me turn it back on for a while.

Also when it gets hot, the laptop seems to slow down, freeze or mouse movement/video play stutters on the screen which I don't think should happen for 4GB of ram .....

Dell :: GPU Heating Up Under Vista

Jul 16, 2007

I have an m90 with NVIDIA Quadro FX 3500M.

It came with Windows Vista Ultimate 32bit preinstalled.

I've installed Windows XP as a second OS(dual boot).

Immediately I noticed that GPU under Windows Vista in idle state keeps heating up.

In Windows XP its temperature stays at the level of 60 degrees C in idle state and the fans are not engaged.

In Windows Vista its temperature in idle state goes very quickly to the level of 80 degrees C the fans are engaged, temperature goes down to the level of about 60 degrees, the fans are disengaged and everything repeats.

Anybody knows the possible reason of GPU heating up under Vista?

Both OSs have latest drivers installed.

Dell :: Latitude D630 Over Heating

May 21, 2010

I have a D630 that is still under warranty, but I've been having huge overheating problems with it. (We're talking 160F+ under light load). This is the model with the Nvidia video card.

When I first called Dell, they sent someone to replace the fan and heatsink. That didn't solve the problem. I figured that I was suffering from the notorious Nvidia thermal issue, and they replaced the motherboard. The problem got worse, and they replaced the motherboard again, and the problem got slightly better.

The thing is, I don't actually need an Nvidia video card because I don't do much aside from internet browsing and copying files over the network. I was upset after the fourth time they sent a Dell technician, that I called them and demanded that they replace my Nvidia board with a standard Intel graphics board. They finally agreed.

Yesterday a technician came out with a new motherboard with an Intel video chipset rather than Nvidia, as well as a new heatsink and fan that matches the new board. Now the darn thing is running at 190F at light load!!! it's actually worse than the Nvidia one was!

Do any of you have any clue what the problem might be? I don't even want to use this thing anymore. What's even more interesting is that we've issued about 30+ Intel D630's out to our associates at work, and none of them have any issues. I wonder why it's just mine.

Dell :: New Heating Problems With XPS1640

Dec 6, 2009

Got my XPS1640 back in June, undervolted it and never had any temperature problems and it has performed greatly. However, a few days ago I updated the GPU, bios and cpu ( i think) drivers to be more up-to-date. Got A11 (was A08) and used mobility modder for the new ATI driver.

Since then however I have had problems. CPU temperatures have been raising (around 80+ or so - before it would only reach 70 max) causing the laptop to throttle back giving me dire frame rate in games.
