Acer :: The Disaster Manufacturer Pt.2
Jun 16, 2009As you may remember I sent my laptop of to acer for the screen to be repaired, they wiped the harddrive, kept etremely poor contact and kept the laptop away from me for a mo nth. Overall, it was a horrible experience.
Not only that, it was a botch repair job and the laptop died soon after being returned. I had no choie but to return it to them, reluctantly. About 3 weeks go back before i hear anything, then I get an email saying it had bee shipped back to me. A few days later, it still hasn't come. then after a few emaisl to them moe I get a replying saying sorry, but the guy wo said that was mistaken, and it had in fact not been shipped out to me.
Then after another barrage of emails I hear they can't actually repair it, and want to replace it to a new one. And of course, they won't swap the old harddrive in. There was no way I could back everything up this time as it died completely so soon after i got it back. This is unbelievable. I then get an email saying I can buy back my own property from them(ing warranty), which later turns out to be a lie too, I can pay £40 to have 4 DVDs backed up off it. 16 gigs from a 250 gig HD. Oh, joy.
I don't know what to do at this stage. Because they outright lied to me and have jerked me around this much, and the damage was their fault, I think I might have something I can stand on. This is absolute insanity and I can't see how anyone involved is an actual human being.
I want to know what I should do. A guy in my house who worked for apple said i should find a cheap solicitor and get them to send a letter, as big companies don't have time to deal with that kind of thing, and i'd at least get it back quicker.

Apr 11, 2009IT seems that for their specs the price they ask for is reasonable, but i am biased towards them cause the last ACER i bought raised high temperatures and made lot of fan noise, and i grew to hate them. But i cant shake off the fact of their reasonable price.
As far as electronics go, i've learned that once you encounter a bad Manufacturer, he'll always not exceed your standards. But i need your output on this matter.
So Is ACER a good notebook manufacturer?

Aug 8, 2009I have had a breakthrough in my laptop experience. I actually opened it up.
I followed the manual and no problems as of yet.
My question is the point in me opening up my laptop was to find the motherboard make and model and revision version number. I was checking to see if there was a bios update for this laptop and the advice given was to get the exact motherboard make etc..
and the best advice on how to get an exact match was to open it up. I did and I searched as far as my cheap tools would let me. I was able to remove the cpu fan but when I went to remove the cpu heatsink I could not get the screws to budge. According to the manual the cpu is beneath the cpu heat sink and this is where I thought I needed to go to find the motherboard make and model etc...
Dell :: Inspiron 1501 Battery Cannot Be Identified
Dec 12, 2008I bought this laptop about 2-3 years ago, so nothing is under warranty. A few months ago the end of my A/C adapter cord broke off. I put it back together, and it would work when plugged in, but I noticed my battery would not charge. If I would unplug the laptop it would immediately shut off. Not sure if my battery coincidentally died at the same time I broke the cord, or if that had anything to do with it. I was told to buy a new battery. Still didn't work. I just bought a new A/C adapter. Still doesn't work. I'm positive both the battery and A/C adapter are compatible with my 1501.
Here's the message I get.
"Warning: The Battery cannot be identified. This system will be unable to charge this battery."
I then press any key to continue, but like it says, it does not charge.
I have been reading forums on this issue for quite some time now, and have seen people mentioning updating the BIOS. I ended up trying that, but still nothing. Well, atleast I think I did. I just downloaded this and installed/restarted:

Aug 5, 2009I am working on a Dell Inspiron 1501 laptop. At first the laptop displayed a message when first turned on "Warning: the battery cannot be identified This system will be unable to charge this battery.
Press any key to continue." I googled this warning and some recommended that the BIOS be upgraded. After the BIOS was upgraded the warning message did indeed go away.
But Windows XP still does not recognize this battery, and shows the laptop to be running on AC power even when the power adapter is not plugged in. Also, the charge light on the laptop does not light when the power adapter is plugged .....

Dec 11, 2008So ive been having fan issues with e6400+E/Dock for months now.
I have the dock with a 19' monitor on top and, a 17 incher attached to the left.
For some reason, after about an hour of use or when using a multitude of programs at once, my fan would kick into high gear and proceed to drive me nuts for hours. When looking up my temps, I noticed that the fan kicked in when my NVIDIA Quadro went above 61/62 degrees (occasionally going as high as 71).
Granted, I probably should have done this simple test months ago, but I finally decided to you use my setup W/O the 17 inch monitor and completely disconnected it from my dock.
Low and behold: no fan issues.
Temps remain in the mid-50's and fan stays at a low, quiet speed.
It appears that the extra work needed to drive the additional monitor is pushing the temps up and kicking in the fan.
So I have two questions as a result:
1) Didn't DELL test this dock before marketing/advertising it to be able to handle multiple monitors (without the aid of a very noisy and distracting fan)?
2) Am I supposed to just live with this now or, is it safe to try and over-ride DELLS factory settings to get the fan to remain at a low setting (how high is 66-70 degrees for the Quadro anyways)?
Multiple monitors are critical to my business and I honestly would not have dropped 2gs+ for this system had I known the fan would be this noisy and distracting.

When I continue, everything seems to be ok; the battery charges normally. The warning appears on every Start. This started recently possibly after I installed Norton 360 Premier security package.
Can I continue ignoring it or does it really have a message for me. The laptop is an Inspiron 1501 and is slightly under 2 years old.

"warning The battery cannot be identified. This system will be unable to charge this battery press any key to continue"
I did search the Internet and this forum but have not find any workable solution. My latop came with BIOS version 2.1.0 A07, tried to refresh the BIOS with the same version, and higher versions all the way to version A15 but no luck.
The battery does hold charge and the message disappear if I remove the battery and bootup with the AC adapter alone.

I know that they have a 128GB option and also a 256GB option for their SSD drives and wanted to know the make/model/manufacturer of the drives.
As we know, there is a world of difference between the performance of the various SSD drives available, with the Intel models being the highest performing ones, while some of the other SSD drive models being pretty poor from a performance perspective.
I talked to Sony support who expressed complete ignorance on the make/model/manufacturer of the SSD drives employed in the FW models (VGNFW590 CTO is the model I am looking for) and thus was wondering if the folks on the forum know the details on it.

Apr 29, 2013I have an Inspiron 1750 that will not recognize the hard drive. I have done the on-board diagnostics and the preboot assessment says that no diagnostic utility partition identified.  I am hoping that I just need to replace the hard drive, but I did not make a restore disc before it crashed. Which of the drivers I need to restore the computer to it's factory settings.

Sony claims VGN-Z790 CTO has upto 7.5 hours of standard battery life.
However, other preconfigured Z Series laptop such as VGN-Z790DND, VGN-Z798Y/X, VGN-790DLX, VGN-790DKX, VGN-Z790DMR, and/or VGN-720D/B has upto 6 hours of standard battery life. It's mystery I was unable to figure out.
what's difference between Z790 and Z720? (I mean fundamental differences like circuitry design or expansion limitations such as maximum ram support and so. Couldn't figure this out... probably one of those model number decryption wizard would know it.)

Feb 15, 2010My friend is having problems with her HP DV4 Notebook.
1) The keyboard goes into crazy mode every now and then.
Sometimes she will press a key and it will take several seconds to appear.
Other times, she will hit backspace while in Internet Explorer, and it will take her into a new tab or a whole new program.
Pressing a key once, such as an r for example, will lead to 20 some r's before it stops.
2) The fan seems very loud. She says it was like this since the day she bought it. Seems excessively loud to me.

Jun 12, 2009I have dv6700 which came with a s-video out and I cant thank it enough for the countless times it has come in handy. Now my friend bought her dv4t and it came with a vga-out only. I know there is a HDMI port, but we are trying to connect to a SD-TV here and that doesnt support HDMI. I bought a vga-to-rca adapter in the past to use with IBM T60 notebook and it didnt work on that. Probably that notebook inherently didnt support tv-out from that vga port. Does HP notebook have the capability to do tv-out from vga port and if yes, what do I need to connect it to a standard definition tv set?

May 4, 2009I've recently started to have a problem with my HP Pavilion ZE4900 notebook. For some reason, it can't get a charge.
When the AC adapter is plugged in, an indicator light will light up to confirm that the laptop is charging. But whenever I plug the AC in, the light doesn't come on anymore. Sometimes the light will come on, only to go back off a second later. I've ruled out the AC adapter by using another one and I've ruled out the battery by taking it out and trying to power it off the AC alone. With both, I still have the same problem, which leads me to believe that it could be an internal problem.
