Dell :: UPDATE: Latitude E Series + Dock Fan - Identified
Dec 11, 2008
So ive been having fan issues with e6400+E/Dock for months now.
I have the dock with a 19' monitor on top and, a 17 incher attached to the left.
For some reason, after about an hour of use or when using a multitude of programs at once, my fan would kick into high gear and proceed to drive me nuts for hours. When looking up my temps, I noticed that the fan kicked in when my NVIDIA Quadro went above 61/62 degrees (occasionally going as high as 71).
Granted, I probably should have done this simple test months ago, but I finally decided to you use my setup W/O the 17 inch monitor and completely disconnected it from my dock.
Low and behold: no fan issues.
Temps remain in the mid-50's and fan stays at a low, quiet speed.
It appears that the extra work needed to drive the additional monitor is pushing the temps up and kicking in the fan.
So I have two questions as a result:
1) Didn't DELL test this dock before marketing/advertising it to be able to handle multiple monitors (without the aid of a very noisy and distracting fan)?
2) Am I supposed to just live with this now or, is it safe to try and over-ride DELLS factory settings to get the fan to remain at a low setting (how high is 66-70 degrees for the Quadro anyways)?
Multiple monitors are critical to my business and I honestly would not have dropped 2gs+ for this system had I known the fan would be this noisy and distracting.

Im starting a thread b/c many people seem to be experiencing some issues with their Latitude while docked.
Some of my problems (keep in mind I use TWO external displays):
1) Most prevalent is my fan issue. This might only apply to nVidia GPU users. It appears that two things are happening: a) the dock simply does not allow for proper heat dissipation.
This for me is a fact as my laptop runs both cooler and, utlizes much lower fan speeds while undocked. b) DELL may have set the fans to kick in at lower temps particularly with the nvidia gpu

I have 2 new E7420 laptops that are replacing some older ones.
When I dock either of them, all I get is a flashing cursor on either the external screens, or the laptop screen. I get the Dell logo, then just a flashing cursor on the top left of the screen.
I can turn the laptop on, wait for it to boot, then dock it, but of the 3 times I've tried that, the USB didnt work once.
Have just upgraded to the latest BIOS, but it didnt change anything.
Is there some BIOS setting or something I need to change?

Does the Latitude E7240 can support two external displays without a dock? Can have one plugged in to the mini displayport and one in to HDMI and output just to these displays?
Or is it limited to just the laptop display and one single external display?

When I take it off the internet works fine.
Running two Toshiba 32L2300U 32" tv's that have VGA connections. Since the eport only has one VGA connection the other is connected with a DisplayPort to VGA adapter.
I need to work from home on two monitors, not the laptop in a dock with the lid open and one TV screen. (Internet is restored when I open the lid as it's in the dock but only one monitor works.

I have a Dell Latitude E7240. My issue is that when it is connected to the D/Dock station, the rear USB ports are automatically disabled.
Is there a way to have them enabled while docked?

It seems that since I updated to Vista and to Window 7 subsequently I can't get the audio to work out of my dock. It works fine out of the side of my laptop.
Any ideas on this? I wouldn't think it is a driver issue as sound does work.

Anyone else experience issues with the display port on the e series dock?
I've got a E6400, E4300 and E4200 that I'm using with a E Port replicator.
I'm connecting it to a dell ultrasharp U2410 monitor via display port.
Several times a day, the monitor will go blank and say there is no signal, then 10 seconds later turn back on.
Several more times a day the monitor will go into standby and say there is no signal, the only way to get it back on is to open up the laptop and press FN F8 several times to switch the outputs, and sometimes that will work, other times it won't. in that case I have to either reboot the computer, or go into the intel graphics settings, tell it to use single monitor, and use the dell digital u2410.
I've called dell support, they are useless. I've updated the video drivers, I've reloaded the computer, I've tried 3 computers (but on the same dock since I only have one docking station).

We have three dock posibilities:
- basic dock
- pro dock
- ultra dock
They differentiate by the number of ports and by the power adapter supplied with them. I had an opurtunity to try my W540 on pro dock, which normally has 65W or 90W power adapter. The computer warned me about insufficient power, and did not charge on dock, everything else worked fine. The I disconnected 90W and connected my original 170W power supply to the doc. Everything is working normally since.
So, my question is: Since I don't need all the ports on the ultra dock, nor on the pro dock. Would basic dock work with W540 and 170W power adapter too?

I have a X1 Carbon and a OneLink Pro dock. I have it setup with evey thing working, no issue's whatsoever. My concern is that when the laptop is completly charged while connected to the dock, is there any way to switch to battery while staying connected to the dock to be able to use the extrnal monitor, ethernet, and usb ports etc?
What i have noticed is that even when the battery is 100% charged , the dock keeps charging as the battery doesnt fall below 100% and in long term it will reduce the battery life.

We have one setup with 2 Dell 24" Ultrasharp monitors (U2412M) using the display port and DVI port. The fact that I couldn't get native resolution of the screens when having dual monitors is strike one but I understand. If you only have 1 of them i would get native resolutions with the display port.
Anyways I had problems with the machine crashing and always when docked. I made sure the dock had the latest firmware and that the driver was also updated. It crashed so much that eventually the hard drive got corrupted. It kept showing NTFS errors so Lenovo replaced the drive for me. I was really crossing my fingers hoping the drive was bad in the first place thus all my problems.
Nope it still crashes! The client just can't use laptop with the onelink pro dock. I already have the latest drivers too.

Since I'm using LAN internet, My X1 Carbon is always connected to ThinkPad Dock at home use. In addition to connect the internet, the Dock is always charging my battery. AFAIK, the battery life will be shorten if it's always charged/plugged. Its better to work on battery after 100% charged and return to charge if asked to.
I just worried, is connecting to ThinkPad Dock after 100% fully charged can shorten X1 Battery Life?

I use the Displaylink dock to connect to an external monitor, but it has suddenly stopped working. The error message said "check connections". I have done so - replaced the digital video cable between dock and monitor with a new one, cycled both dock and monitor on and off several times, but windows can not find an external display.
The Lenovo settings app has been giving me an "updating... " message for 3 days (I have raised a query on that elsewhere) so I can't use that to check out the display problem. I should say the display problem started today, and the "updating.."

I have Lenovo T420s plugged into ThinkPad Mini Dock Plus Series 3 with USB 3.0 90W. The problem I have USB 3.0 port on the dock (blue one) works as USB 2.0. The laptop port works fine. I am checking it by plugging Seagate mobile HDD - when the HDD is plugged into the blue port on the dock station Windows (7, 64-bit) complains 'Device can perform faster', using laptop's port doesn't trigger the message.
USB 3.0 driver is installed.
BIOS version is 1.37.
Intel Chipset drivers are updated.
Device manager shows the connection as a chain of two 'Generic USB Hub's, if HDD is connected to the laptop's port its chain of 'Renesas Electronics USB 3.0 .......

I have an issue with the OneLink dock and the ethernet port. Initially it was working but after a BIOS update it now always gives me "Unknowns USB device".
I just got my hands on a i7 X1 Carbon 2 and a OneLink Pro dock and at first it all worked out as it should.
After a while the "System update" prompted me that there were updates I let it run, including an updateof BIOS from 1.06 to 1.07. Now I can no longer get it to work.
Whenever i plug it in i know get: Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)
The SuperSpeed link to the USB device keeps going to an error state Compliance. If the device is removable, remove the device and then disable/enable from device manager to recover.
I even did a full system restore and started from the beginning...

The W540 has an onboard video card in addition to the NVidia video card. We use AutoCAD and Revit, and will never care for the onboard video card driver. We cannot seem to get the 170 watt Ultra Docking Stations (plural) to work with our W540 Laptops (plural) when selecting the NVIDIA card and using an external monitor. We have updated all the drivers Lenovo has asked us to including the firmware on the docking station. We have followed the instructions to make the change in the BIOS so that the NVIDIA card is only used. We have called Lenovo support twice on two separate occasions. On one occasion, they said we are not the only people to call in about the problem, and that our only course of action is to get another docking station or return the dock to our vendor. Using Windows 8.1, W540 on an ultra dock and using HDMI? Even though I mention HDMI, (because I think it is the main suspect), DVI seems to blue screen the laptop too.

How can I configure Bitlocker in X1 Carbon using Win8.1 so that the laptop won't ask the freaking Bitlocker Recovery Key every time when I boot the laptop IN the OneLink Pro Dock station AFTER I've used the machine WITHOUT the docking station (or vice versa)?
Bitlocker works OK if I boot the laptop every time in same mode (using always docking station OR not using it ever). However, I need to use the laptop in both modes; with the docking station (at work) and without it (at home and when travelling). And I'm not wanting to type the looooooooong Bitlocker Recovery Key every time when I boot the laptop in different mode.
How can I tell for the Bitlocker that both these modes are trusted ones?

I have a ThinkPad X240 laptop with Windows 8.1 Enterprise x64 installed. Sound plays just fine from the laptop's speakers, and when I plug external speakers into the laptop's 3.5mm audio port they work just fine too. when the laptop is docked in my Ultra Dock 90W docking station and the external speakers cable is plugged into the dock's audio port, no sound is heard. If I'm playing music through the laptop's speakers, as soon as I plug a cable into the dock's audio port no sound is heard. I can still use the laptop's audio port to connect external speakers, but that defeats the object of having an audio port on the Ultra Dock.
The Ultra Dock has (I believe) the latest firmware installed (version 2.22.000) and I have the latest audio drivers installed: in Device Manager > Sound, video and game controllers > Realtek High Definition Audio > Driver version is 6.0.1.7188 which is the latest available from Lenovo Support downloads. What do I need to do to get the Ultra Dock's audio port working? I mistakenly posted this message on the "X Series tablet ThinkPad Laptops" board.

I have a T420 that I'm using with a Mini Dock Series 3 - 90W 433710U docking station. I'm trying to connect to two external monitors (both HP 1965's) using the DVI and VGA outputs on the docking station. From the VGA output, I'm running a VGA (M) to DVI (M) into my monitor. I can only get either the DVI or VGA outputted monitors to work by themselves, but not together. When I connect both external displays, it will switch off one of the external monitors (the first one connected). Both are verified working as external monitors with the T420, just not at the same time. When using the DVI output, I can get dual monitors to work using the ThinkPad display as one monitor and the DVI-connected external monitor as the second. Is there a way to connect to two external monitors from a T420 with a Mini Dock Series 3 - 90W 433710U docking station? Or do you a multi-monitor adapater, such as an Cirago HDX3DV01 to do that?

I have a new Lenovo Ultra Dock 170w and have power logitech speakers hooked up to the dock using the audio port. When the laptop is off or removed from the dock, I get a what sounds like static coming through my speakers fairly loud. I prevously had a T500 and a dock in the same configuration without this issue.
I have removed the dock power and still get the audio distortion. I have to completely remove all connected wires aside from audio before the noise go away. I am thinking there is a grounding issue with the audio jack on the Ultra Dock. Only happens with powered external speakers... I have tried with other speakers and get the same noise over them too.

I am running a IBM Thinkpad W540 with a Lenovo Ultra Dock Docking Station 170 (Model 40A20170US). I have 3 Asus 23.6" LED HD Monitors (Model VN247HP). These monitors have a standard VGA connection and 2 HDMI ports, By default you are provided a VGA cable and a HDMI-DVI cable. When I plug these monitors into the Ultra Dock no signal is found(including the VGA).
When I plug into the direct VGA port on the laptop, the monitor gets signal. If I use a Mini-DP connection with a Mini-DP-DVI adapter I get signal just fine. If I plug my this monitor into my desktop under HDMI and DVI connections it works just fine.
I have gone into the bios and confirmed that under display the "Video Mode on Dock" is set to Advanced(I tried standard and it did not work any better). I have the latest video drivers for the Intel HD graphics driver (10.18.10.3412) and the NVIDIA Quadro K1100M (9.18.13.4052). The USB ports work just fine, as does the power cable for the docking station. I tried applying the latest firmware update but the program runs and nothing happens. I checked for any other drivers that might have resolve the issue but have not had any luck.

I bought this laptop about 2-3 years ago, so nothing is under warranty. A few months ago the end of my A/C adapter cord broke off. I put it back together, and it would work when plugged in, but I noticed my battery would not charge. If I would unplug the laptop it would immediately shut off. Not sure if my battery coincidentally died at the same time I broke the cord, or if that had anything to do with it. I was told to buy a new battery. Still didn't work. I just bought a new A/C adapter. Still doesn't work. I'm positive both the battery and A/C adapter are compatible with my 1501.
Here's the message I get.
"Warning: The Battery cannot be identified. This system will be unable to charge this battery."
I then press any key to continue, but like it says, it does not charge.
I have been reading forums on this issue for quite some time now, and have seen people mentioning updating the BIOS. I ended up trying that, but still nothing. Well, atleast I think I did. I just downloaded this and installed/restarted:

I am working on a Dell Inspiron 1501 laptop. At first the laptop displayed a message when first turned on "Warning: the battery cannot be identified This system will be unable to charge this battery.
Press any key to continue." I googled this warning and some recommended that the BIOS be upgraded. After the BIOS was upgraded the warning message did indeed go away.
But Windows XP still does not recognize this battery, and shows the laptop to be running on AC power even when the power adapter is not plugged in. Also, the charge light on the laptop does not light when the power adapter is plugged .....

On Start, I receive a message: Warning: The battery cannot be identified. The system will be unable to charge this battery. Press any key to continue.
When I continue, everything seems to be ok; the battery charges normally. The warning appears on every Start. This started recently possibly after I installed Norton 360 Premier security package.
Can I continue ignoring it or does it really have a message for me. The laptop is an Inspiron 1501 and is slightly under 2 years old.
