HP/Compaq :: Can Virus/spyware Corrupt Recovery Partition
Jan 4, 2010
I bought a HP-Pivilion DV14-1551dx a month back and I haven't created recovery discs yet. After a month of usage I suspect some virus and spyware in my laptop because some of my friends browsed unprotected websites. Will the virus and spyware affect the recovery partition? Now if I create a recovery disc from the recovey partition will it be safe to use those discs or will it be affected by virus and spyware?
In mac, when you say download a virus, must it be open/run before it can excute itself? does it also require the user's password before it can continue? if you did not open/run it, then the virus will not excute and lay dormant inside itself or its package (trojan). is this correct?
I got a virus somewhere along the line. Every time I do a factory install it's never right. Can the hidden recovery partition become corrupt? If so, how do I wipe my hard drive clean so I can use the "Completely Restore Coomputer to Factory Default" setting?
I’ve just done a clean install of my Dell Vostro -- reinstalling vista and removing the recovery partition in the process. Outcome = a ‘cleaner’ machine with none of the preinstalled bloatware/c**p from Dell. (first time I’ve done anything like this, but followed a brill guide in the Dell section of this forum ).
I’m about to tackle my Mums Compaq Presario C310EA. The aim is to remove all the rubbish she has accumulated over the years, incl any spyware/ adware she may have, and generally have a bit of a clean sweep…. hopefully resulting in a faster laptop. I’m backing up her data, and moving some of my Dad’s stuff somewhere else.
Basically I want to clean up as much as poss, but unfortunately she has no xp disk, just the recovery disks (cds) she burned when she first got the laptop.
As she has no xp disk I guess the best I can hope for is to reset the laptop to the factory settings (?) .. not ideal, but I don’t think the (factory set) bloatware is too much of an issue for her – she’s not a heavy user.
Should I use the recovery partition for this, or do I need to use the cds she burned? .
I’d like to know the best approach – and can’t seem to find a set of instructions to follow.
I have a dell XPS m1530, and because I am pretty sure I had a virus that my antivirus software could not pick up I reinstalled Vista.
I ended up reformatting the partition it was on before installing over, I also reformatted the recovery partition. But, apparently XPS system comes with a MediaDirect partition that I was unable to reformat (the windows set up did not let me do this).
I am wondering now if it's possible for the virus to have lived through the reformat in the MediaDirect partition. If so, how can I reformat that partition?
I recently bought a HP HDX 16 laptop, and today I've created my recovery disks. I also have a recovery partition.
My question is: If I remove that recovery partition, and go back to the factory installation using my recovery disks, will my recovery partition be back?
I've read that those recovery disks bring your notebook back to the state as it came from the factory, so that would include the recovery partition, right?
I'm thinking of formatting my laptop to restore everything to it's original state(actually kind of have to!) but the problem is that I've never done so via the partition.I used to use the Recovery DVD but since it's broken this is my only choice. So how do I do it and will I need to install the drivers myself after?

I have a problem with my Latitude D 400, it recently started to become slow to the point where I cant work with the computer. I tried to re-install windows xp with the recovery drive on the computer but it says that the drive is corrupt. The computer does not have a cd reader so I cant intall a cd. Also, I did not get the recovery disk. How could I install a fresh windows xp?
got a DV7 with 2 partitions- C: drive with OS ad D: drive with the recovery part.
I have burned 3 recovery dvds from the laptop.
If I put in a new hdd, fire up the recovery discs.. I know it will create a C: drive with the OS.. but will it also create a D: drive with the recovery part same as original hdd?
ive got a hp pavilion dv9823em notebook and one of my friends formatted my recovery partition drive. for some reason i didnt make recovery cd either now i want to reboot my notebook, it wont let me. is there anyway i can reboot it?
I have tried to split to the C partition into 2 partition with "Paragon - software"
after it finish the machine reset and didn't boot again I tried to do recovery but it doesn't load, i manage to install another version on windows 7 home when i log in the machine i found that the recovery partition become dynamic and still cant boot from it
I tried to get HP backup and recovery manager for my lap but i cant find this version now i Need to do recovery what i should do
I have attached a screen shot of my disk management
I bought an HP-DV6 1045EE, but I didn't like the partition scheme..
This was the way it first was:
C:Local Disk [288gb] D:Recovery [10gb]
C was preloaded with Windows Vista. I shrunk the partition using Vista's Disk Management as much as I could, and shrunk it further to 50gb using Gparted. After doing this, I couldn't boot into Vista anymore. So I restored the image using the recovery manager.
I then created another 50gig partition for Win7, and installed it. All well and good.
Then I created an extended partition out of the remaining space, since all other partitions were primary, and created two logical partitions, 1 unformatted and the other NTFS.
After this, I booted into Vista and saw that my recovery partition had turned to unallocated space, even though I'd made sure not to touch that partition no matter what...
I am changing the hard disk of my laptop from 80gb to 320gb. for the primary drive i.e. c: i can use the recovery disk that i created to load the os and the drivers.
Now the question is how can i create the recovery drive d:
I would prefer to have the hp recovery partition. if there is use of some other software like norton ghost then i would prefer to use any free software.
Is there a way to recover laptop without the recovery disk? I'm told there may be this function on the computer itself...but don't know how to get there..
After you get passed the bios password, I received an error telling me that there was a corrupt or missing file. These mini notebooks don't have a CD-ROM. What are my options? These were bought at an auction so we don't have the original CD to reload them.
I own an HDX16T. Day 1, I burnt RECOVERY DISKS and then I proceeded with a clean install with a new vista install.
I decided to try to restore the notebook with those recovery disks. Guess what? It appears that you can no longer use those disks without having the original HP RECOVERY PARTITION?
I just simply can't use it anymore. I can't restore my notebook to factory condition anymore. The only option I have is to Click "FINISH" and reboot.
i have pavillion DM4-3002TX Beat Edition. Â I just download and install the norton partition magic 8.0 demo from website... and suddently or accidentally my recovery partition been deleted. So I can't recovering my system anymore or disabled. Â so how can i get the recovery partition back to my notebook??
I have a pavilion dv7-6b50ei notebook pc bought 2012. It always gives a command prompt pop up which doesn't stay long enough to read. I also felt there's a virus on it which my anti-virus couldn't solve so I tried factory resetting but when I restart and press F11 it gives an error(something like a boot.. is missing). so I tried my recovery discs. Disc 1 of 4 ran fine but disc 2 keeps stopping with an error.
Now the laptop doesn't load as I think the OS has been formatted during the recovery and don't know what to do. I feel disc 2 is bad too because it also gave an error while trying to copy it to a USB pen drive. I have also tried an external dvd and run the hp test on the hard drive; the hard drive passed the test. If I can get a new set of recovery discs, it would solve my problem.
When trying to restore the factory image (F11 during boot), the laptop seems like it is trying to boot the missing Windows installation (Windows boot manager error page). The partitions "SYSTEM", "HP_RECOVERY" and "HP_TOOLS" have not been touched. The ~15 GB recovery files are still there! The Windows partition (2nd primary) has been deleted and recreated as an NTFS partition. Since then the recovery process will not start. Â How can I restore the system from my intact HP_RECOVERY partition without using recovery DVDs? (I can't access them right now.)Does the Windows partition need some specific disk label? What is the magic that breaks the recovery when a NTFS partition is simply deleted and recreated?Peter
I'm using hp pavilion dv6-6016tx.i have recover DVDs and all necessary drivers backed up.so can i delete my recovery partition. i'll be having the recovery DVDs all time with me and don't need HDD boot in case of formatting or recovery]?
Why is heatlhy recovery partition so large???How can I get into it to see why is has so much keywap in it.  I need as much space as possible. Can I boot into recovery partition. I want to see why it is so large.  I have windows professional 7, but this came with windows home prem oa 7. I want the home premium. How do I do this. I dont want to download more OS again.  I keep getting access denied. I went into security settings and try to take ownership of it, but is says access denied?
I created a USB recovery drive and I would like to free some storage by deleting the reocvery partition however the HP recovery manager does not have the feature to do so. How can I remove the recovery partition?
I am having a few problems here with a dv6000. Firstly I need to point out that the power button on the machine is broken so the only way to start it is by using the quick launch keys and booting into Windows that way.
Ok, so I have been doing some routine work on my brothers machine, however, It was getting quite low on disk space on the C partition. When I originally set up his machine I created a C: and D: partition for his documents.
No problem, I thought and went into Partition Magic with the intention of removing a gig or two from D and relocating to the C partition. Of course though ,it failed and now I have about 2 gig of unpartition space.
Windows now tells me the Hal.dill is missing or corrupt. The funny thing though is that it still boots, it hangs for a few minutes on the error the restarts and boots fine and it only displays the message on a fresh boot, not on a restart.
I ran a chkdsk /p last night, but stupidly didn't run a chkdsk /r so that will be my first task tonight.
From what I have read its quite simple to re copy the hal.dill file but I am worried this may affect using Quick Launch the boot the machine.
I somehow got infected with a horrible virus, I think it was possible a trojan horse or something along the lines of that. So then, I restarted my computer, but I chose "Safe Mode with Command Prompt".
However, it started listing a bunch of files on the black screen, so I shut it off, and tried to restart it, but failing.
Then, the computer said I should do a "system restore", so I found my system restore CD's, and had the computer do a system restore. Everything was going well, and when it finished restoring, I restarted it, yet again to see a message saying there was a fatal error and I need some sort of software or something.
I got a new 250GB hard drive for my HP Compaq 6820s hard drive a few weeks ago and now I can't boot from it as it's been infected with a virus which prevents it from booting. [I get a brief flash of the infamous "Blue Screen" before it returns to the HP screen.
Is there any way; software-wise that I can clean the hard drive of any viruses if I put it in an external caddy?
