my friend is thinking about purchasing a new laptop for his mother. The HP DM3 laptops look to the best solution so far since they are both lightweight and have great battery life, something he thinks she'll appreciate. One thing i'm not sure about is their ability to run Adobe Photoshop CS4 smoothly.
I don't use Photoshop very often and when I do, it's on my laptop, which is pretty decent in terms of specifications. Will the program run fine on a laptop with a Intel CULV or AMD Neo processor and integrated graphics? Which leads me to my next question:
Which Pavilion laptop would you recommend? Are they both similar to each other than the processors?

I've got an HP HDX X18, it was working perfectly for almost a year, purchased in jan 2009. If anyone could help diagnose my problem i would be thankful. First I've got a BSOD after restart an unusual beep sound than OS freeze. After 2nd restart my laptop does not start not even boot up, black screen no error appear no change in display. The disk LED blinks orange a few times, no other response. CAPS and NUMlock lights are on, not blinking cpu fan seems to be working. Before BSOD i installed EVGA Precision for temp monitor (NOT for overclocking!). Also as suggested by HP support, reseated the RAM. Screen still blank. No idea if there is disk activity but that should not stop from entering the BIOS, if Im right.

i bought a dv3 series laptop, as usual it comes with crapware vista.
I downgraded it to windows xp without a problem. i am having lot of issues trying to install the drivers.
I loaded sp3, right after i installed windows. I downloaded the drivers from [Drivers] HP dv3, Compaq CQ35 / CQ36 (INTEL) most of the drivers installed fine, the problem i am getting is with the graphic card driver, nvidia refuses to install, saying that cannot find hardware configuration for your specific hardware type. for the sound i install the UAA update for sp3 which i found from [url] after i install the operating system finds audio on high speed blah blah, load the driver and when i restart the soundcard disappears. cant get my head around this. after installing most of this, i am left with 4-5 unknown device entries in device manager. cant figure out what is causing this.

above my keyboard, right above the F5 to F7 keys, there are touch-sensitive buttons that let you change the current song, stop song, pause/play and stuff. it works with windows media player any time, but with itunes it only works when itunes is the window that's opened at the time, is there any way to make it so it works with itunes any time? i use itunes more than media player and i'd rather it work with itunes instead

I have purchased a dv5178us Pavilion laptop 3 years ago and I feel it is time for memory upgrade. The manual and all the online memory stores say it only accepts 2 x 1GB memory modules.
I wonder if anyone have tested to install more memory, let's say 2 x 2GB modules, and if it works. I'm guessing that it may function based on some eMacs that used to work with more RAM that the manual informed.

I have done all the searching I can in the past week to find information on the heat output of the HP dv6 series equipped with AMD processors because I plan to order one tomorrow or Tuesday, the dv6-1260se Artist Edition.
I really did not want to create a topic for this because I was sure it has been addressed at least in part before but I couldn't find enough information to confirm or deny my overheating fears.
If any dv6; even dv5, dv7, and HDX 16 owners; have any information on the heat output of these models.

I took a dead HP DV6103nr. I am trying to diagnose if its the motherboard or something else.
- The notebook is completely dead, no lights, won't power on.
- I get 18.9 volts from the end of the AC adapter power tip where it plugs in.
- I have completely disassembled the notebook. I get 18.9 volts through the USB/Power Jack board, which is separate on this notebook, all the way to the motherboard.
- When I disconnect the USB/power jack board from the MB, and plug in the AC adapter, the blue light on the USB/power jack lights. As soon as I connect it to MB, lights out.
Would this indicate replacing the MB?

regarding purchasing a new motherboard for my HP DV6189eu laptop. The original one went dead with no screen and no bips at boot...
I know from some research that is common of that model of gpu (7200go) to die like that. So I am heading towards buying a motherboard with a different graphic chip, like a Intel one.
The original motherboard is spare number 443774-001. My main question is if I have to be careful in buying a new motherboard or just a new one for the same DV6000 series model with AMD socket is enough?

I have a dv9820us laptop, it came with Windows Home Vista Premium 64. I trashed vista fiasco, and installed Win7 64. I cannot believe HP don;t support Windows 7 for this laptop.
Almost everything works fine with Win7, but not the audio, mic, etc. The conexant audio driver has problems and is not compatible with Windows 7. Does anyone know how to fix this? maybe a official driver is available?
I tried a modified version of the driver from here, but it still doesn't work, sometimes the audio work, sometime don't.
I hate bloatware vista, and I don't want to pay for the recovery cds from HP. (i don't have the recovery partition and the recovery cd that i made, brings an error)

a friend of mine has a DV9620us. I INstalled WIndows 7 Ultimate x64. I got pretty much everything working on it except for 2 things that I cannot remember how to fix.
1. The remote control that comes with it. I installed Wireless Assistant for W7, but it still didn't respond.
2. While I have the quick launch buttons installed, the mute button does not turn amber when muted. It's not a najor issue, but I would like to be able to have his laptop fully working the way he brought it to me (especially since it used to be mine.)

I have had a HP dv5z w/ windows Vista Home Premium - 64 bit for two days now.
1) I have a wired USB mouse that I use since the touchpad is terrible. But everytime, I plug in this supposedley plug and play mouse, there is a message that says device driver is being installed and it takes a few moments before the mouse can be recognized. Is this normal?
2) Also, the day i got my laptop, i had to download Windows updates (the automated message on the control panel said so!) and installed them. I am not sure if its related but since then i have re started my laptop 2-3 times and there is a file check process that happens as a part of the start up and then just before the welcome screen comes, i get a message
Step 1 of 3 - Configuring Updates - Do not shut down your computer.
How long is this going to happen and is this normal?

I'm looking to upgrade a few things on my HP DV9743cl and I am having some problem finding out if the factory components will support the possible upgrades.
Processor:
T7250 ---> T9900
RAM:
3gb PC2-5300 ---> 4gb PC2-6400
I've actually purchased the PC2-6400 ram, but I'm curious if it'll actually run at this performance or stay at the PC2-5300 performance level after the install.
GPU:
NVIDIA GF 8600M GS ---> NVIDIA GF ?
Can this even be done since the GPU is integrated?
HD:
2x 160gb (which I think are at 5400 rpm) ---> 1x SSD Intel x25-M 80gb for the OS and a 10,000rpm HD for secondary
Currently running Windows 7 32bit after a clean install.

A friend of mine has this model ( zd8180ea) and is having a peculiar problem. When he edits documents or surfs the web his keyboard fails to type some letters. He writes a word and some letters do not show up. Often space fails to work and words, attempts of words, are linked together. I am not a big HP expert but I think there is a faulty keyboard connection. I could be wrong and a software solution is available. Can anyone give me a hand?
OS: Xp Sp3
Where can I find the ATK drivers for this model?

Whenever I play a videogame (WoW mostly) or run a directx 3d diagnostic the computer freezes up and I get either of two results: one is a "no signal" message from my monitor (lcd screen that I route my screen on, the laptop screen is disabled) or it recovers a few seconds later with a VPU error. it recovers only about 5% of the time, almost always it's the no signal.
I tried installing new drivers, downloading all possible updates, new directx and no luck.
this does not happen every time by the way, and not always when i start the game. sometimes i get no error for hours, sometimes i get one as soon as the game starts.
the only solution that i can come up with at the moment is a hard reset of the system.
I've talked to HP online professional chat service and they told me something completely... useless... for the lack of the better term. something about some games not being compatible with some operating systems...and yeah, i can do everything else.. surf the web, play movies, leave the pc on for hours at a time and no errors, doesn't matter if it's just been started up after 24 hours of rest or if it's hot after 3 hours of a movie, the errors are always there. it's a zd8000 series laptop. ATI Radeon Mobility X600 card, 1 gig ram. about 60% of the hard drive is empty. also I've played the same game for years on it now with no problems.

I bought a DV2000 with a failed motherboard. I tried reflowing it once and it didnt work. I will more than likely be replacing the mobo after I try reflowing once more.
It currently has a gforce 6150 igp with an athlon tk53. I am wanting to get a mobo with the best graphix solution possible. So far, the best I have found is a gforce 7150 board. I know there are intel setups with gforce 8200 but I would prefer to stick with amd, although an intel board is not completely out of the question.
So, if you know what the best graphix solution is, let me know! Post up the exact model number so that I can get a mobo part number. Or, just post what you got if its better than a 7150 gforce!

I am trying to decide what I should get between two laptops that I will get as a graduation present. To be honest, I am pretty much a total noob when it comes to laptops, so any advice would be welcome. My choices are between the Asus G50Vt-X5 or one of the HP Pavilion dv7t series laptops. My budget is around $1000.
I was at Best Buy the other day when I was shown the Asus for the first time and I really like how it looked and felt, much more than the overly glossiness of the HP laptops. However, I know HP has a pretty good reputation, as the rest of my family has HP's and they seem to run just fine.
Here are the specs for both:

Note: I used Cnet for the Asus laptop because Asus's own website kinda sucks for providing specs.
Truth be told, I like to game a little and would really like to be able to run Star Craft 2 (if that has any signifigance to you guys) when it finally comes out.......

my laptop started acting REALLY weird about a week ago. While I am using it, seemingly at random, the screen 'flickers' and freezes up, and the only way out is to hold the power button to shut down, and then restart.
I have included a picture of what it looks like:
I also noticed that the speakers sort of emitted a 'staticky' sound as this happened, although this could just be because the computer stops processing the sound data.
Anyone ever experience anything similar??? What to do?
Also if I check the Windows Event Viewer after restarting, it logs nothing at the time of freezing, no errors or anything.
The laptop runs sort of warm, but never part 66°-69°C
It has: Windows Vista SP1, AMD ATHLON X2 1.6, and 2gb ram.

Is there something similar to this [url]that will work in my DV2700?
The DVD drive it came with is garbage... and I usually burn on my desktop so I was wondering if there was a better use for the drive bay. Then again, im not sure its worth the hit on battery life when I can buy a 500gb.

Can any ENVY owners (any model is fine), comment on the cooling system, hardware temperatures, physical temperatures, etc.? And if anyone knows about the cooling system/features/vents for the ENVY 14.
Also, compare ENVY's gamingability to the m11x, MSI GE600 or MSI GX640, if possible.

The back of the dv9000 has some slits for airflow, and there are also slits on the bottom of the unit. Because the airflow is so weak, I can't detect by feel which way the air is actually flowing.
Does air enter from the bottom and get exhausted out the back? Or Does air enter from the back and get exhausted out the bottom?
My as-yet-to-be-made cooler's fans will be mounted below the slits on the bottom of the notebook. Therefore, it's important to know if the fans should blow air onto the bottom of the notebook or if they should pull air away from the bottom of the notebook. This is crucial because if the cooler's fans are installed blowing air in the wrong direction, they could actually force hot air back into the notebook!

I can't decide between Sony or HP (18.4" screens). I will use the laptop for music composition, movies, some gaming, etc. Since I load soundfonts into memory each time I compose music, this is a very memory intensive hobby, thus, more ram may be better. However I am unsure if anything past 4GB would be totally necessary.
My setups would be (I am only stating cpu, ram and video card)...Sony Vaio AW290
Processor - T9550 (2.66 GHz)
Ram - 8 GB DDR2
Graphics - (9600GT 512)
HP HDX18t
Processor - Quad Processor Q9100 (2.26 GHz)
Ram - 4GB DDR3 System Memory
Graphics - (9600GT 1012)
The above two are similarly priced (~$2,400) A few questions I would like to know:Which laptop has a better display screen?
Is a quad core and 4GB ram a better combo than a dual core and 8GB ram?
Which laptop would be generally faster for my memory intensive needs?
Which laptop is better for movie watching?

I got an HP Envy 15 recently with the Bing CB deal on the day it was released; but have found that an SSD on that machine would probably be necessary for my needs. I posted some questions in the owners' lounge, but haven't since gotten any response, so I assume that people there may not know the answers. So I want to see if people in the broader HP forum would be familiar with these things.
When I purchased this machine, HDD was the only option, and the HDD is not listed as a user serviceable component. But in the last couple of days, the SSD option is up on the HP website; so I can see several options that maybe available to me, depending on HP policies. Is anyone here familiar with HP policies regarding:
1) Returns of products, does the 21 days mean 21 days from purchase, or 21 days from the time that I receive the product?
2) Returns of products that was purchased with warranty? I did purchase with the 3 year accidental; but I have not activated the service with the machine yet.
3) Exchange of products, how easily could it be done through HP, for the same machine of a different configuration?
4) Bing cash back, would it still be valid if I decided to exchange it for the same machine of a different configuration?
5) Since the HDD doesn't seem to be a consumer serviceable part, would it endanger the warranty if I changed out the drive myself? Or would they even care about that?
6) How easily can HP parts such as the 1.8" brackets be obtainable from HP, some time in the next few months; based on experiences with HP products in the past.
I guess depending on the answers to these questions, I would have the option of A) returning and buying anew; B) exchange for another configuration through HP; C) change out the HDD myself with a 2.5" and just forget about it; D) wait until the appropriate parts are available, then change it out with two 1.8" drives.
I would like to keep the BCB; but if there is no other way of getting an SSD into that machine, then I might just have to let that go, and try to find some lesser discount to work with.
