HP/Compaq :: To Control The Fan Speed On HP's Notebooks
Sep 28, 2009
The few programs that I know that detect fans won't even show a fan on my laptop, nor does it show on my Friend's G60 (or whatever the silver one is, I don't remember it exactly).
Mines isn't broken or anything,

Today I got my HP EliteBook 2530p in "FU432EA" configuration. It was important for me to have an optical drive, so i chose the configuration with the 120 GB 1,8" HDD.
The 2530p looks great so far and performs pretty well... If there weren't the extremely annoying noises coming from the notebook.
The HDD with its 5400 rpm (it's a Samsung HS122JF, very slow btw, not really faster than 4200 rpm drives) makes a clearly audible, very high frequency noise and turns on/off every 30-60 seconds resulting in clicking sounds. I can live with that for the moment, because I'll upgrade to some SSD in the near future.
But the second annoyance is the fan inside the laptop. Even when idling in windows with temps below 50 °C the fan turns on every few moments. Unfortunately I haven't been able to control the system fan or even read the actual speed. I tried Notebook Hardware Control, SpeedFan and HWMon, but neither of them reported me anything about the fan. I tried undervolting the CPU with RMClock (which doesn't really support the new Penryn CPUs) and got a few degrees less, but this wasn't enough to keep the fan quiet. In the BIOS there are no options regarding the fan, only some "keep fan always running on AC power", which I disabled.

None of the Vaio notebooks have IR Remote Control which I feel is very useful and has become standard since long in notebooks of other manufacturers, still I have not found anyone complaining about it in this forum. Does no one here miss the lack of it in their Vaios?

is there any way to control the fan speed of this lap top?
I have tried speedfan, rivatuner, even tried the undervolting option with RMClock (no success - the CPU was running at the lowest voltage already).
One option did present some signs of activity - Acer Asprie One (!) Fan Control utility. However, it only switched off the fan completely. Besides that, it was quite unstable and sometimes forgot to turn the fan back on after the threshold of temperature was crossed again.
By the way: computer doesn't get hot at all. The feel is quite cool, as Speedfan utility indicates these temperatures:
GPU: 41C
HD0: 36C
Temp1: 54C
Core0: 30C
Core1: 27C
It appears that I love this lap top almost for everything, except its loud operating sound.
I am running at:
ACER 5739G
Vista 32 bit,
Chipset: Intel PM45
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo T6600
GPU: GeForce GT 130M

well last night and this morning i was busy making my self a home made cooling pad, with some crap laying around the house. I don't know if there is already one but i'll put this one up. I will upload pictures tomorrow. The total project was about 1 hour and cost less than $10. It also has a speed control which is cool (it is built on my ac/dc adapter so you will make yours). My mother-tongue is not English but French, so excuse the words i might use or not use. Also their are some tools i couldn't translate the name, but when pics are up I'm sure you will know..................

i have encountered another bug aside from gpu boost issue, which is currently still unresolved. Fan speed control is not going idle on 7720 SE, even when temps are very low (below 40c)... on A12 BIOS, Â I have to restart my laptop to be able to switch to FAN Idle speed again. These are temps iam having and fans are still on.

I have had this laptop for about a year now and ever since I bought it it has had major throttling issues while gaming. I have tried many ways to make it run cooler with no such luck (It runs at about 95*C when playing most games) . The fan never runs at 100%, only aboout 70% (from what I can hear) so I was wondering if their was a way I could control the fan in order to run it at 100%.

I have changed my dell studio 1535 motherboard after ordering a refurbished one from dell. When reconnecting all the parts, everything worked well except the control media button <Previous Track> which was lighting up by itself from time to time.
I unplugged the media control panel, plugged it up again. This time the media panel is lighting up intermittently and the laptop cooler is at maximum. Unplugged again, a cable pin was short circuited and got broken in the process :(.
Fixed the cable, now the media control panel is completely down and the cooler runs at maximum speed. Removing the media panel fixes the cooler issue.
As I am not an expert into this, I was wondering if changing the panel will fix my problem or the faulty connection could have broken the motherboard control panel circuit.
PS. When running diagnostic via F12 key, no faulty issue is detected.

Will HP offer a new series of Notebooks this year? Specifically 17 inch? I am assuming the 18 inch HDX and 16 inch HDX will be just getting spec upgrades.

my notebook has the optiarc 5500S BD Rom and I've only had it for a couple days. I've tried a few blu rays using quickplay but the playback is a little stuttery, especially when skipping from scene to scene. Overall, playback is fairly smooth but my eyes are really picky and I can tell it's not as smooth and fluid as it would be if I were to watch it on my ps3.
I'm wondering if PowerDVD (blu ray version) would be smoother. What are your experiences with blu ray on your notebooks and what software do you use?

I'm in the process of looking for a 15" notebook with an Nvidia 9600 gt (or ATI equivalent gpu). Up till now, I have always bought Dell notebooks mainly for their overseas business warranties. Since Dell is only offering the XPS 1530 with an outdated 8600gt gpu, I thought I would check in this forum to inquire whether Hp offers a comparable notebook with a newer mid sized gpu? (I'm interested in having the mid sized gpu mainly for simulation gaming for those overnight out of town business trips.)

I just noticed that the DV4t, 6t, and 7t notebooks all look to have been upgraded/updated to include DDR3 along with the Windows 7 release. Pretty nice for the power conscious I’d think. 1.5v RAM instead of 1.8v should match up well with a “P” series chip and a LED backlit screen... not to mention a bit of a speed boost. Not the newest stuff coming, but a nice update just the same for the Intel 4 Series chipset.
Check the Spec pages here:

I bought a pretty basic DV4t for my daughter for Christmas. Did a fresh Vista 32 install and everything is working nicely as advertised. However, when I check through CPU-Z (v1.49) it only indicates a down clock to 1595Mhz. The Vista CPU meter gadget though shows one processor at or near 0 at idle with the second at about 28%. I also have a DV2700tv in the house, also with a fresh Vista install, and it down clocks to 800Mhz.
CTO Spec’s are:
DV4t, P7350, 4GB ram, 160GB HD, Webcam, 802.11n w/Bluetooth, Lightscribe,12 Cell, BIOS F.24 (factory).
Unlike AMD systems, my understanding is that there is no driver required like there is for AMD Cool-n Quiet and that the speed steps are initiated between the BIOS and the OS with the correct chip-set drivers installed. My thoughts are that either:
(1) There is a problem with the BIOS F.24
(2) There is a problem with CPU-Z and this config
(3) The is a problem with the processor
(4) Or the P7350 doesn’t down clock like the T8100 that is in the DV2700tv
I re-installed the chipset drivers just to make sure all was correct. Device manager is clear and no problems there. I checked Intel and the P7350 supports "Enhanced Speedsteps" and it at least is down clocking from 2Ghz to 1595Mhz. I’ve also searched the forums and no luck there either.

I just found out about ReadyBoost. I have a 2 gig that it can use.. Has anyone tried this.. does it do more than just prefetch?
Again, I am reading a LOT of great things about using the exFat file system on your Flash drives with ReadyBoost.. anyone tried this?
You see, my thinking is I have a CQ61 with 2 gigs of ram and on board video with 128 ram shared up to 1 gig. Windows needs a gig and the games need a gig. At some point memory should get sluggish and effect either windows performance, the running game, or both.
I am trying to minimize the processes and services windows runs, and leave more available Ram for the games to make them run as best possible. The ReadyBoost thing is just one trick I am trying to do this as well as disabling tons of unwanted processes and services using tools like Autoruns by Sysinternals, Smart Utility by TheWindowsClub and IoBit's GameBooster.
(I do plan on getting more ram when I can afford it but this is just a temp measure)
Also your thoughts.. isn't a USB Flash drive faster than your hard drive? if so, why not use one for your page file? If that works.. wouldn't that be better to help out those times when you run low on ram?
Also, what do you think of using a ram drive with a USB drive to simulate extra ram in general? (Like with Ramdisk)

how to control the fan on the HP6930P?
I disabled "fan always on AC" in the bios.
The fan is always on. It doesn't disturb at the lowest level, but it ramps up every 5 mins or so for 2 or 3 seconds. I find that ramping up disturbing and would like to disable it. Considering how cool the air coming out is compared to laptops I have had in the past (Thinkpads and Toshiba) I would say HP is being conservative with their settings.
Is there a program or some bios setting?

I just bought a new dv6 on black friday from staples, the dv6-1334 with a t4300/4gb ram.
Is anyone having trouble inserting their remote control into the slot on the left side of the laptop? My remote won't really fit...i can get it about 90% of the way in, but when i push to click it in/click it out, its like its stuck with sticky goo or something, it goes in really slowly to lock in place and comes out really slowly when i click it out of place.
Other than the media remote control issue, I'm liking this ALOT more than my tx2500 tablet with better cpu and graphics/video card.

I have a DV9000 laptop and I have problem with the fan control and the Heat Sink. The tempeture of the GPU and CPU go very high (GPU 60 and CPU 48), but the fan runs very slow, like if the tempeture is ok and after that the computer stops. As well I want to replace the pads from the heat sink, so I would like to know which types of pads I should use for this computer and where the GPU is located, because there are three chips (the CPU in right side, one in the middle and another in the left side with the nvidia signature). my computer is Intel Duo and the bios is version D.25.

if you could only spec up one (or two but not all) of the above, which would you chose?
A higher/faster processor, more ram, or a faster (rpm) or even dual HD's. I'm just trying to get an idea of what's really the most important.

Why does the volume bar have to take main focus everytime I use it causing it to take me out of full screen games?
Speaking of the volume bar, turning off the touchpad makes it impossible to use any programs until the stupid picture telling you it's turned off goes away.
I have eyes and ears for a reason! I can hear the volume going up and down, and the light on the touchpad is enough to tell me it's off!
Is there anyway to keep the hotkeys but turn off the visual reminders? =.=;;

This notebook runs fans as soon as you start it, and it runs faster 5 minutes later even if it stays idle. The noise is too much. I don't care about performance, I just want it to run at minimum fan speed. I just need to be sure it won't melt. I don't see a setting in BIOS. What can I do? If I open it up and unplug the fans, will it melt or burn to destruction? Or how can I but a notebook cooler tray-thingy when the seller doesn't allow me to try and listen to the sound the thing makes?

I've put an extra HD in a caddy delivered by newmodeus (converting SATA disk to the "PATA" connector in the DVD-bay in my 6510b - the harddrive is only able to read at 15 mb/s compared to the 100 MB/s when placed in the harddrive-bay (SATA).
Does anyone know if this is normal? is the the HP-connector or the chip in the caddy that is the bottleneck.... Any workarounds to improve the speed?
Ive tested both an intel x25M 80 gb and a Hitachi 7200 rpm 200GB in the caddy with the same slow performance...
