HP/Compaq :: Where Is Lid Switch On NC6400

I have the issue of backlight not turning on on my NC6400. My guess is that the lid switch is faulty. But I can't figure out where the switch is located.
When I boot up, the screen flashes on for a second before the backlight turns off. With a bright light, I can still see the HP logo during boot up and the computer continue to boot into windows just fine. If I set the lid to the angle in which the computer lid is closed/open (the hdd indicator light changes color), sometimes I could get an instant of backlight.
I think the lid switch is stuck or broken, but I can't find it on the outside. Anyone know where the switch is? I'd also be happy with just letting the screen be on all the time if it comes to that.

here is my specs;
Chipset: Mobile Intel Calistoga-GM i945GM
3D accelerator: Intel GMA 950
IDE controller: ICH7-M Family Serial ATA Storage Controller - 27C4
I think that is enough. Basically I want to know exactly what CPU's are compatible for an upgrade and also if it is possible also to upgrade my DVD drive (currently its a 6x MATA DVD-RAM UJ-842S).
I doubt this but worth asking: is there a chance that I can change the network card to a 802.11n?

I have an HP nc6400 that was given to me. It is BNIB, but was put aside and never used because the display was always bad (someone forgot to warranty the unit back in the day).
Anyways, the laptop runs fine. All drivers are ok, XP SP2 installed, etc.
However, the laptop will boot and look great, but a few minutes in the display will go "black". You can faintly see the icons and desktop, but the light just goes out--if you know what I mean. My guess is a backlight or inverter, but I am far from a laptop expert and before I spend the money on the part, I'd like to hear from anyone who has experience with this (any tests I can run to tell for sure, kniown problems, etc)
FWIW, I can hook the laptop up to an external monitor and the display is great, so I know it is not driver related.
I believe it is the model with WXGA (1280x800) and not WXGA+. I assume when replacing anything, I'll need to look for WXGA parts.
It's a great little laptop and I'd like to get it working. I actually like the look and feel of it better than my Latitude D630.

I upgraded xp to win 7, like we all are going to have to do, but can't get the finger print reader to work. It does show in devices that there is one on the machine. I downloaded the drivers for Vista but they got me nowhere.Â

I'm fixing a DV6000 for a friend, basically the wireless switch is disabling the wireless even when it's switched to the on position. I remember reading about a registry hack that can disable the switch, but I can't find it now.

somehow the wifi switch on my hp dv2000 broke. i dont know how it happened, but it doesnt matter now as i cant use the internet because it is in off mode. i tried enabling it on device manager, but with no luck since i think its because it is still in the off position, and w/o the switch itself i cant manually switch back to the on posistion... anyone know how i can replace the switch? is it sold by hp, ebay, online retailer? is it an easy fix? and most importantly is it expensive? some crappy pics taken from my phone show the problem...

my DV9774ca I plug my HDMI cable in and watch on TV just fine, but have had to manually switch from laptop speakers to digital output manually. You have to remember to do this before starting Media Player, etc, or have to go back and start again.
Its the Realtek High Definition Audio.
how to get it to automatically switch audio to the digital when HDMI is plugged in?

I want to move my entire system to a Solid State drive.
I have done time machine backups to an external USB HDD.
Can i boot Snow, run disk utility, and restore a time machine backup from the old HDD to a the newly formatted SSD and be cool?

When taking off the hinge cover on my Dell XPS M1210 I found out that besides Power and Media Direct switches there is a third hidden switch labeled SW_CAP.
My question is: Does it serve any purpose?
PS. I started taking my lappie apart due to overheating... sometimes the fan would not turn on...any suggestion? Replace the fan?

I can’t enable hibernation on my laptop. I’ve reinstalled system recently and installed all (at least I hope) drivers.
If I try to enable it in dell quickset feature (tick off the option), after pressing those next, next buttons and returning back to quickset, it’s not enabled again.
If I try it in windows power options, I keep getting message “the file cannot be access because it’s being used by another process”

assuming that the processor on the m1210 is not solder, would it be possible to switch the processor to a quad core? they are the same pin size and i think if i some how i find a better cooling system and bump the power it might work, but maybe this sounds TOO simple to do. i currently have the 2.0ghz t7200 cpu. let me know what you guys think. will the bios recognize and run (also stable)?

I have a Sony VGN BX51XP which I have just updated to Windows 7 (not an easy task after the hard drive failed) but I spent several nights trying to sort it and then my mate took about 20mins to solve! But I have the problem of my mouse cursor roaming all over the screen as soon as you rest your arms on the keyboard area. I am a graphic designer and I a longtime PC user. I am looking to make the switch and since I have a 22" LCD monitor, the macbook is very appealing to me because when at home i can just hook it up to that and also have a very nice portable laptop.
As far as which macbook model to get is where I am having problems I know the entry level aluminum one is the P7350 @2ghz and the high end one is P8600 @ 2.4ghz. Either way I will be most likely upgrading the ram to 4gb but which processor should i go with? I get mixed reviews from apple friends some say I will definitely notice the cpu difference while some say it is only marginal in real world use. MY most intense program will be illustrator/photoshop / multi-tasking.

Once I turn off the wireless switch, I can't seem to turn wireless capability back on without rebooting the machine. The wifi LED remains unlighted and 'diagnose and repair' attempts do not work (telling me to turn wireless capability on by flicking the switch, which is already in the ON position).
Has anyone else faced this issue?

apple didnt release drivers which support gpu switching in it's new version for windows. basically, the drivers used in your dell is the same as that which will be used by my mac because our boards are the same(mcp79).
for the gpu driver, i'm currently downloading 179.82, A06 from dell.com and then i'll paste a modded inf so that my 9600m gt is also detected ....

I am trying to use a Latitude D630 docked in a PR01 port replicator with a KVM switch. The problem I am having is that the video signal is not displayed using the PR01 DVI port.
The Latitude D630 itself does not have a DVI port, however, when docked in the PR01, the port replicator has a DVI port that will display a video signal when connected directly to a monitor. When the KVM switch is placed in line between the PR01 and the monitor then the DVI signal is not displayed .....

I purchased my M1210 in late December and got it configured so that I could switch to Vista if I wanted. I got MCE on it and I think the configs for Vista. Here's my dilemma: I don't whether to switch to Vista or not. I got the free upgrade CD that Dell sent me. I have read, though, some really bad reviews of Vista. Is that b/c some systems don't have the right configs? Should I switch? I'm heading off to college in less than a month. What should I do? The college recommends either Windows XP Prof. or Windows Vista Ultimate (oh yea, why ultimate? isn't that overdoing it? i thought at first it was but then the dell college website also recommends ultimate. why is that?). Would my system be ready for ultimate? The upgrade I got is for Home Premium. They recommend I get ultimate but, unless there's something I'm not seeing, I think Home Premium will suffice. But should I switch or stay with XP? If you do think I should switch, is there some guide online somewhere that can guide me through it (ie. which drivers to backup, etc.)

I have the Acer Aspire 6935G and it came with Vista, which I hate. I want to switch to XP Home but I can't locate the various drivers apart from on sites which claim to offer 'free drivers' but then ask for fees. Has anyone experience of siwtiching from Vista to XP on this machine please, or can anyone point me to a reliable source of drivers?
