HP DV7-1270us :: Game Lag / Overheating And Shutdown
Oct 25, 2011
My problem is with over-heating, I've had this laptop for a while, and although I've maintained it, It has been used a lot. I've installed a few games, and while playing them it's not uncommon for the laptop to overheat and shut down. The laptop normally gets pretty hot, when it's on for extended periods of time (but doesn't usually shut down), the fan does work, and does go faster when the laptop's doing a lot of things.
My issue with this is, let's say for example I'm playing GTA IV; this laptop is equipped to play this game, based on the minimum recommended hardware, and also the recommended (besides CPU) so I would naturally assume playing it is going to be with no lag, or problems. This is not the case as with other newer games, Mafia II, Dead Island, and others gave me the same problem, starting them up and playing usually gives me good FPS (playable anyway) but after maybe ten minutes, very rough lag starts, I'd get like a maximum of 10FPS if even that, despite the fact I know my system can handle it.
So far I've
- Open the laptop, cleaned it out, ensuring no dust is in it
- Defragmented the entire C drive, had over 50k fragments
- I use gamebooster software when playing games to ensure no resources are wasted on background programs
- Tweaked my nvidia geforce 3D settings to maximize performance
- Tweaked settings in game, low graphics, etc
- Updated Graphics card drivers to latest version
All of this maybe got me a few extra FPS, so you can see my frustrations, I've exhausted every option I know, which is why I've come here, the lag problems seem to be related to the overheating problem because like I said booting up the games from a cool laptop, usually means playable FPS, but lag starts as the laptop heats up, and uses 100% cpu power. My only other thought would be replacing the thermal paste. This is a pretty strenuous operation.
My specs are:CPU: You Have: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU P8600 @ 2.40GHz
CPU Speed: You Have: 2.4 GHz Performance Rated at: 27.048 GHzRAM: 4.0GBOS: Windows Vista Home Premium SP2Video Card:GeForce 9600m GT300GB harddrive, 107GB free right now, direct x version 11

I have an Acer Aspire V3-551 which is having an overheating problem. However, it only overheats when I am playing some game and the laptop is plugged in. It will not over heat when the computer is on battery only. It shouldn't be the power cord because I have bought a new one since the problem started. Also, the heating seems to be coming from where the fan is.

I have tried two HDMI cables for 3 year old HP Pavilion g6 to connect with HDTV. Both cause the HP to overheat and shutdown. It worked a year ago but former cable broke. I have dusted by blower underneath. I was trying to watch free movie on HULU. Does not overheat when using otherwise.

I've had an Inspiron 15R (N1550) for a year and a half now. Six months in, the fan shot its bearings and had to be replaced under warranty by a Dell technician. About four months ago, I started experiencing overheating issues again resulting in thermal shutdown when running resource-intensive applications for any length of time. After use, the case would literally become too hot to touch. I updated my BIOS, cleaned out the areas I could reach with canned air, and operate the laptop on a cooling pad at all times. Even this had, at best, minimal effect on the duration for which the computer could run without reaching excessive temperatures.
Recently, I noticed that the fan wasn't throttling when running high-load applications, either, so I installed SpeedFan and confirmed that it never seemed to come out of the idle state. SpeedFan appears to have fixed the throttling issue, however, even when clocking the fan to a minimum of 60% and a maximum of 100% once any of the components rise above 55-60deg (c) while blowing cold air at maximum speed from an external fan directly over the vent, I get at most half an hour out of games or high-demand video editing software before I experience another thermal shutdown. If I stop playing halfway through, then quit the game and examine the temperature gauges on SpeedFan, Cores 0-3 show as between 85-93 degrees, and two readings, Temp5 and Temp6 (the chip for which simply reads "DELL") shows as 90-95 degrees.

I've bought a new laptop 1 week ago, and it's running smooth with 1 exception: Everytime I shut the computer down or save energy, it magically forgets it has fans to cool cpu and graphics card. When i try to run a game it will gradually drop fps until it shuts down from overheating. I tried to fully discharge it and disconnect it from the battery to identify the hardware and then set it to standard in the bios, then it works. But the moment I shut down the computer it is the same thing over again. I don't want to do said process everytime I start my laptop..

I have been using dell inspiron 3521 for a year now and my warranty expired recently. After two three days of warranty expiration my laptop started to overheat when i played fifa 14 and shutdown unexpectedly in the middle of the game. The game worked smoothly for hours when i used to play it before my warranty expiration date.

I just bought the 6920g yesterday:
t5800, 9500gs, 320gb drive,
However, when I play a game (call of duty 4) and let it choose its own settings, it is great for a while, but then if there is a big explosion etc, it lags down the game, and it stays lagged?
it's running on 1024 x 720 , is the 6920g expected to play this game?
I'm using stock drivers, haven't done my backup yet, using version, 7.15.00.11.7561

While playing GTA4 for a while on my DV5 I notice my temps are kind of high. The CPU hits 75 and 73 for each core and my GPU hits 70. Are these temps low enough to consistently play the game or do I need to find better cooling solutions?

I'm torn between buying the Asus G51VX-RX05 and the Macbook Pro (the 13-inch: 2.26GHz and I'll upgrade the memory to 4gig). I'm a fan of the portability of the Mac and its long battery life. I'm also annoyed with blue screens, error messages, and other frustrations of using Windows. However, I want to be able to play games on my laptop and I don't know if the Macbook Pro will be good enough for me.
The games I like are not current. They include Quake 3 Arena/Quake Live, Diablo 2, Soldiers of Fortune 2, and I heard Unreal Tournament 2004 is awesome, so maybe that too. I'm a big fan of first person shooters and I want to be able to play those games without it being slow. Having said that, can I have an enjoyable gaming experience playing these titles on a Mac (I don't plan on using bootcamp)?

I know the Mac platform isn't purchased for it's prevelent skills in the gaming world, however I know there are still some decent games kicking around that work. Essentially, I absolutely cannot adjust to a windows environment and need the protection and stability of my precious OS X so I'll be getting a MBP soon (havent decided if I want to hold out for a refresh or not.)
with that said, I'm curious as to what -IS- available for gaming?
I know Blizzard has some titles that work. WoW for example
-Warcraft III
-Starcrafc II
does Diablo 2 work fine? I know it's older so would there be any compatibility?
Any RPG's or fun sim/strag/rts type games? Diablo 3 wont be out anytime before I die so I'm not holding my breath.
I recently found some really powerful stock/forex trading workstation software for OS X so that was essentially the last straw for me. Not that it's any importance to this thread at all, but I'm excited and felt the need to share.

it is pretty easy to find demo's for just about any game available for PC but the select games available for Mac I can't seem to find demo's of. One I am talking about specifically is Call of Duty 4. I would just go ahead and buy it for the PC and run it in boot camp like I do all my other games but I am curious to see how games run inside OS X. Anyone know where I can find some game demos for OS X?

I just got my new i7 vaio Z recently, and i love it!
But when I load up any games, the fan starts sounding like a jet engine. (which is good, it means its dissipating heat I assume)
However, any way to tell if the fan is not keeping up? any chance it could be causing overheating/damage? I just want to make sure I keep this thing in good shape.

I realize the 330M GT is not a tier 1 video card for gaming...but I'm curious if this card can drive the native 1920 by 1080 res of this laptop in modern games (MW2, Mass Effect 2, etc). I'm not looking for 60 frames per second...would be satisfied with 30...just trying to gauge if this is a reasonable expectation.
Closest answer I've found in the owner threads indicated that one person said it could run native on Left 4 Dead 2 and COD: World at War.
Very impressed by the performance of the i7 core and DDR3 memory...just hoping the video card can at least hold its own.

a laptop I returned to costco since it couldnt run some games. I went to Costco.com to see about building a laptop from HP through Costco. I went with these specs, its already almost $200 over budget and my wife might veto it haha but let me know if you think this could run fallout 3 at least on decent settings.
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo Processor T6600 (2.2GHz)
3GB DDR2 Memory
250GB HDD (good enough size, I rely on a server in my house for main storage)
256MB NVIDIA GeForce 9200M GE
That comes out to $744.99 and it doesnt appear to have tax, which will help. I'd like to run simple games like Halo 2 PC, Fallout 3 and maybe even Gears of War if I felt frisky. I'm not looking to run anything like Crysis. Thats the only GPU I can choose other than the onboard. I upgraded the Processor from the T6600 for $51.00, would it make $50 worth of a difference?

my HP HDX16 has the following specs:
2.4ghz Core 2 Duo 3MB Cache
4 gigs 1066mhz Ram
9600M GT GPU 512MB DDR3
500 gig 5400 RPM HDD
Now this computer does everything i need it to and more. But I have noticed something...In Call of Duty 4 I notice that sometimes it stutters during running to a mission and during intense firefights. This game is being read off of my HDD not off of a DVD.
Could the stuttering be attributed to my 5400rpm being a bottleneck?

I really think the vent being partially occluded by the screen causes the system to throttle.

i have a dell inspiron 1505 notebook. I bought it new about 1 year ago, i had it upgraded from dell with the 1.86 core 2 duo processor 1 gb of ram and a 128 ati x1300 mobility graphics card. 1 year ago most games only required a 128mb card which was fine, but now most seem to run on 256, there was a 256 option from dell for another 80 dollars on top of the other upgrade fee i already paid and i did not think it was necessary. So i know there is one out there. I have searched around on the internet for a while off and on and i can only find reviews of products i can not find any info on where you can actually buy an upgrade for this computer... I would like to get it upgraded to the 256 if it would not be too much. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
And also i play Battlefield 2142 occasionally and it had a freezing issue on the load screen so i dropped the graphic settings down a bit then it worked fine. But it has happened again, and i dropped the settings down as far as they can go with no luck it still does not work, and the EA tech told me to look for an update for my graphics card which i did and installed one that said it fixed "some gaming issues" but it did not fix the freezing issue.

Given the following hardware of the Sony VAIO X:
Quote:
CPU ~ 2.0-GHz Intel Atom Z550
RAM ~ 2GB-4GB (apparently you can add on another 2GB according to laptopmag)
HDD ~ 128GB SSD
NATIVE RES ~ 1366x768
GFX ~ INTEL GMA 500 w/ 762MB
OS ~ Windows 7 Premium (32-bit)
I don't own a Sony VAIO X, yet, but I would just like to compile a compatible/playable game list for future reference.
If any owners would like to confirm/deny compatibility with the games or would like to add a game, I would appreciate if you send me a PM or post here!
