HP Lockups :: Can HDMI Cable Between G6 And HDTV Cause Overheating And Shutdown
Oct 19, 2014
I have tried two HDMI cables for 3 year old HP Pavilion g6 to connect with HDTV. Both cause the HP to overheat and shutdown. It worked a year ago but former cable broke. I have dusted by blower underneath. I was trying to watch free movie on HULU. Does not overheat when using otherwise.

I'm trying to connect my Pavilion dv6 to my HDTV using an HDMI cable. I'm getting video, but not audio from the TV speakers. The problem started after I upgraded from Vista to Windows 7. I had no problems with HDMI with windows Vista.
I've tried updating/reinstalling the audio drivers from HP's website, but it doesn't work. I've also tried going to the control panel and changing the playback device, but the HDMI audio device icon no longer appears in the playback devices dialogue box. The only playback devices are Speakers and Dual Headphones, Independent Dual Headphones, and SPDIF (Digital Out Via HP Dock.)
Why is the HDMI device not shown in the playback dialogue box?

I have been conecting my Studio 15 laptop to my 720p HDTV for months. Some days it works fine, most days it doesn't. When I hook up the hdmi, the screen will appear on the HDTV, several seconds go by, both screens go blank and then the picture is back on the laptop.
I have tried starting the computer with the HDMI already hooked up and the TV at the correct input. I havetried adjusting the resolution on the laptop to match the TV resolution.

I had some movies on my XPS 1530, so I decided to connect it up to my parents Samsung 37 inch HDTV while I was home for Thanksgiving. This would be the first time I have every used the HDMI output jack on my 1530 and I have noticed some strange things. First, when I connected the HDMI cable my computer it detected the HDTV but every time I try to switch to it, either by FN+F8 or in the nvidia control panel, it reverted back to the notebook screen. The only way I could get it to work was by rebooting the machine with the HDMI cable plugged in. After it reboots, I can then change to the HDTV no problem.
So why would I need a reboot to get it to work?
Second, after I finally get connected the only resolution that seems to work is 1280x720(720P). If I try to go any higher the picture on the HDTV will flicker terribly. I have connected my 1530 to other displays using the VGA connector and have gotten higher resolutions before, so what's the deal with the HDMI connector?
Background info:
XPS 1530 (Bios A12)
Fresh installing of VISTA Business
Video Driver - (laptop2go modified) 177.98

I have a studio xps 16 with the Radeon 4670. When I connect my laptop to my 37 inch HDTV via HDMI, the image does not fill up the TV screen. Is there any way I can adjust the resolution?
Also I have downloaded a couple of 1080p movies, but again they do not fill up the TV's screen, and don't look as stunning.
I don't understand why it wouldn't fill up the TV since if you burn the movie onto a blu-ray disk or dvd, it would look stunning on the HDTV.

My problem is with over-heating, I've had this laptop for a while, and although I've maintained it, It has been used a lot. I've installed a few games, and while playing them it's not uncommon for the laptop to overheat and shut down. The laptop normally gets pretty hot, when it's on for extended periods of time (but doesn't usually shut down), the fan does work, and does go faster when the laptop's doing a lot of things.
My issue with this is, let's say for example I'm playing GTA IV; this laptop is equipped to play this game, based on the minimum recommended hardware, and also the recommended (besides CPU) so I would naturally assume playing it is going to be with no lag, or problems. This is not the case as with other newer games, Mafia II, Dead Island, and others gave me the same problem, starting them up and playing usually gives me good FPS (playable anyway) but after maybe ten minutes, very rough lag starts, I'd get like a maximum of 10FPS if even that, despite the fact I know my system can handle it.
So far I've
- Open the laptop, cleaned it out, ensuring no dust is in it
- Defragmented the entire C drive, had over 50k fragments
- I use gamebooster software when playing games to ensure no resources are wasted on background programs
- Tweaked my nvidia geforce 3D settings to maximize performance
- Tweaked settings in game, low graphics, etc
- Updated Graphics card drivers to latest version
All of this maybe got me a few extra FPS, so you can see my frustrations, I've exhausted every option I know, which is why I've come here, the lag problems seem to be related to the overheating problem because like I said booting up the games from a cool laptop, usually means playable FPS, but lag starts as the laptop heats up, and uses 100% cpu power. My only other thought would be replacing the thermal paste. This is a pretty strenuous operation.
My specs are:CPU: You Have: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU P8600 @ 2.40GHz
CPU Speed: You Have: 2.4 GHz Performance Rated at: 27.048 GHzRAM: 4.0GBOS: Windows Vista Home Premium SP2Video Card:GeForce 9600m GT300GB harddrive, 107GB free right now, direct x version 11

I currently have a 13" Unibody Macbook and I'm looking to hook it up to a 32" Sony Bravia LCD.
I am looking to purchase the Monoprice Mini-DP --> DVI dongle and hook that up with my Monster 400 HDMI to DVI cable.
I have the very same cable which I use to connect my HP desktop to my Sony LCD TV.
My only concern right now is what I read about DVI-I versus DVI-D. On the cable's packaging it says "SINGLE-LINK Connection ... For connecting HDMI to DVI components up to 1080i resolution"
I'm looking at the pins on the DVI portion of the cable and its group liked this:
9 pins (3x3) SPACE 9 pins (3x3) SPACE horizontal metallic piece.
The Monoprice adapter and the Apple adapter looks different in terms of the slots which the pins will go through.
I just want to make sure I have right components before I buy the adapter.

I've had an Inspiron 15R (N1550) for a year and a half now. Six months in, the fan shot its bearings and had to be replaced under warranty by a Dell technician. About four months ago, I started experiencing overheating issues again resulting in thermal shutdown when running resource-intensive applications for any length of time. After use, the case would literally become too hot to touch. I updated my BIOS, cleaned out the areas I could reach with canned air, and operate the laptop on a cooling pad at all times. Even this had, at best, minimal effect on the duration for which the computer could run without reaching excessive temperatures.
Recently, I noticed that the fan wasn't throttling when running high-load applications, either, so I installed SpeedFan and confirmed that it never seemed to come out of the idle state. SpeedFan appears to have fixed the throttling issue, however, even when clocking the fan to a minimum of 60% and a maximum of 100% once any of the components rise above 55-60deg (c) while blowing cold air at maximum speed from an external fan directly over the vent, I get at most half an hour out of games or high-demand video editing software before I experience another thermal shutdown. If I stop playing halfway through, then quit the game and examine the temperature gauges on SpeedFan, Cores 0-3 show as between 85-93 degrees, and two readings, Temp5 and Temp6 (the chip for which simply reads "DELL") shows as 90-95 degrees.

I'm a proud owner of a DELL xps M1730 laptop. Recently I experienced using my laptop on my television screen (LG). However, recently something went wrong. When I try to establish the HDMI connection my laptop won't change it's screen to the television screen.
It changes the resolution on the laptop screen and that's it. When my friend get's here with his xps m1730 it does work for him.
I tried connect a screen trough the DELL quickset but nothing I do seems to help and it is hard to find information on the web concerning this issue. Maybe it is a very easy procedure and I misschanged some of the settings....

I have a dv6500t computer. I recently bought a 23" lcd monitor (HP w2338h) to go with it. I was using the vga cable that came with it, which works perfectly fine. I then bought a link depot hdmi cable to use to connect my monitor. The cable works fine, but when I restart my computer (with the hdmi cable still plugged in) my computer brings up the blue screen that says my computer was shut down to prevent further damage. But when I take the hdmi cable out, this screen doesn't pop up and shut my computer off. Why does the hdmi cable do this?

Does anyone here own these cables [url], or a different brand? If so, would you care to share what you think about them and if it's better than using the MDP to DVI converter?
I'm thinking about pulling the trigger on these but it seems that this is a new product and there aren't that many reviews yet so I'm still a bit hesitant.
What are your thoughts?
Or if anyone owns the adapter [url] .
Also, I'm seeing that you can't get audio through the adapter for the MBP. If that is the case, would I be able to get audio if I went through the MDP -> DVI ->HDMI route?

I am considering a 24" monitor which I need t share as a second on my 1710, as well as the primary on my gaming rig (2X8800GTX SLI).
I want to drive it @ 1920*1200. I dont want to use the VGA connector for one of the machines, when I do resolution drops to a max of around 1600*1100. So, I am looking at some of the monitors that have DVI and HDMI connectors. The thought was to connect one of the machines via HDMI with a special cable like one from bluejean cable, and use the other straight through, and choose a monitor with an easy one touch toggle between the two.
I read some horror stories that the HDMI link via a DVI-HDMI cable isn't optimal, and someitmes has its own resolution or sync limits. Does anyone know about this?
My other choice is a cheapo DVI switch, but it would be cool just to hit the input button.

I have a Sony Vaio 17 inch full HDMI laptop using Vista. I have been using a HDMI cable connected to my TV for a few months now all working fine yet today for no apparent reason the sound has started coming through my laptop rather than the TV. I have gone to the control panel and tried switching the default sound to the realtec digital however this did not work and I ended up with no sound at all.I have tried two different players both VLC and Zoom player.

My new Studio XPS 13 with integrated NVIDIA 9400M graphics came in. I tried to hook up the HDMI port to my HDTV, a Sony KDF-E50A10:
http://www.sonystyle.ca/commerce/ser...ductId=1001599
On my screen, all that displays is some random flickering colors. Ive tried changing the resolutions and various settings in the NVIDIA control panel, but still no luck.
Does anyone have any suggestions on what to try? I figure HDMI should be pretty much plug and play. The TV is 720p and Ive tried resolutions from 1280x720 to 800x600. I dont really have any experience with HDMI to be honest.
There are some custom settings in the NVIDIA control panel, but I am not too familiar with these settings:

I have a Latitide E6500 with the Nividia Quadro NVS160M graphics card. I'm running Vista Business 32bit. My E6500 vid outs are s-vga and displayport. I use my laptop mainly in my home office and I would like some more real estate, when in the office 1440x900 is just not enough. When looking at monitors displayport does not seem a common input but most have HDMI.
I then looked at monoprice and saw two possible options for displayport -> HDMI, an adapter or a cable. What is the difference between the two and which should I use if I want both audio and video signals transmitted? Or am I stuck using a monitor that has a displayport input?

So for a while now I've been using my laptop while it's plugged into my tv. But the parts of the screen are cut off (the top, left, right and bottom, which doesn't make sense since there is no reason to cut off all sides) I've seen guides telling you how to disable the overscan in the video card settings or in regedit but the thing is, I HAVE NO VIDEO CARD. The guides online assume you have one, but I don't my laptop is as plain as it gets. How can I disable the overscan (if possible)?
I have searched through my tv's settings but have found nohting even remotely related to overscan settings.I have a hp pavilion 15-n221sa running windows 8.1 and I'm trying to get the display to work on a samsung le46b650 tv.

I just got this U530 and wanted to use a dual monitor setup with a monitor that only supports DVI inputs (Samsung SyncMaster BX2335). I bought a cable for the purpose: an HDMI to DVI-D cable. I cannot seem to get the laptop to recognize that there is a monitor attached, however.
Am I going to have to use a port replicator instead or use some sort of USB 3 to DVI setup? I have no other video output options built into this computer.

I bought a Roline DP to HDMI cable hoping to be able to watch HD content in my livingroom and not having to plug an extra audio cable as DP should carry sound too.
When I do the same as on the youtube video, I get the following settings in the control panels: [URL] ....
But there's no sound coming out of the TV. I've tried it on my SyncMaster PC/TV Screen and on my Samsung TV in the living room. On the TV in the living room, the windows audio manager shows the device, but it cannot be selected as show above. It stays grey.
I've got a T420s with discrete nVidia Optimus graphics (Quadro NVS4200M). Driver version is 1.2.19.0 for nVidia HD-Audio and 8.17.12.6696 for NVS 4200M. This information comes from the device manager. I installed my system from scratch and used ThinkVantage System Update 4.
Where the problem comes from? I could only imagine that the cable isn't capable of carrying audio, but that seems rather illogic, does it?

I have recently purchased Dell Inspiron 15R 5521N laptop with Windows 8 Pro. When I try to connect my laptop to an Acer monitor with an HDMI cable, it gives me a no signal error. But when the same laptop is connected to a Philips monitor using the same cable, it works perfectly. As usual I thought that the monitor was the culprit, but when I connected another laptop to the Acer monitor using the same cable it worked without any errors. So where does the problem lie. The HDMI cable is OK, the laptop is also OK as also the Acer monitor?

I just recently purchased this ultrabook and I have noticed that the sleep and shutdown functions are not operating as expected. Restart works just fine.
Description of Problem: When attempting to put computer to sleep, the screen goes black, but the system remains on (lights on keyboard on, fan still running). I am unable to recover from this state unless I do a hard power off (holding down power button) or wait 5 minutes, at which point the computer simply shuts off. This sort of... defeats the purpose of "sleep." Haha.Same thing occurs when I shutdown the notebook - screen goes blank, lights and fan stay on, and unless I power off by force, laptop stays in vegetative state for five minutes and then shuts down on its own.In both cases, I am unable to recover from the black screen. No response from the computer, regardless of key combo (Ctrl + Alt + Delete, etc.)
Steps Taken to Attempt Solving: The laptop came with BIOS version Insyde F.09, so I updated the BIOS version to F.13. Didn't fix the problemI went into the BIOS and reset everything to the default settings. Still hasn't solved the problem.I found another thread which the user had the exact same problem as me, but on a different model notebook. I tried using their solution to roll back the BIOS. However, it still didn't fix the problem. [URL] .....
