HP Lockups :: 4540s BIOS Appears To Be Totally Dysfunctional
Oct 17, 2014
Am having serious problems with my 4540s, which is about two years old. The bios appears to be totally disfunctional. I cannot get in via Esc, nor by pressing the key which I want, such as the F9 key to select boot device. The machine runs Ubuntu linux and I discovered that I have removed both the HP_TOOLS partition and the Recovery partition. I have now reconstituted the HP_TOOLS partition, but cannot fix the bios.
The machine indicates that the hard disk is faulty, although I can read it apparently without problem on my Mac. However the machine will not hop over the hard disk to try and boot from either the internal CD/DVD drive nor from a usb CD/DVD drive. I have not yet tried a usb stick.
After a period of running, I found I could not, for example, delete emails in T-bird, clicking on an icon would not open the program and I could not close some programs. Occasionally the only way to turn off the machine is by holding down the power button. At the present time it will not start at all, but just cycles through the simplified hardware check, and then sits there with the HP logo on the screen when I exit the test.
Removing each of the 4GB memory chips and/or placing them in an alternative slot has not made any difference.
I discovered lately after updating my BIOS from hp website URL....that when i use my dvd driver to read dvds he gives me a message that telling me and I don't know how to get my original BIOS before updating .

I have a HP Envy TouchSmart 15t-j000 and I want to enter bios. When I restart the computer just the HP logo appears. I've tried to press ESC, F1 - F12, insert, delete, home, end... Nothing works. Do you know how I can do this?
Hey i was playing some half life 2 without my power cord hooked up and after a couple minutes my computer totally shut off. Is this a safety measure or is something wrong. It works fine with the power cord in btw
just got off the phone with Apple .... seems like I might have a cursed NVIDIA graphics card... had basically kept my MBP ('07 model) in sleep mode when I went to office. When i came back, the white light in the front wasn't pulsing anymore and it was replaced by a bright constant white light - proceeded to open the lid... and the screen was totally dark ... tried a few key combinations in random to get it up and running but to no avail .. then checked a few forums on this issue... seems like lots of ppl have the issue but a lot of them also managed to get the screen back on by resetting the SMC and PRAM (which I proceeded to try) ... unfortunately hasn't worked for me despite multipe resets of the SMC and PRAM. Gave Apple a call and all things point to the graphics card having conked out ... this sucks big time! ...
The worst thing is that after switching on my machine, I can still load software by doing the keyboard shortcut for spotlight and typing the application ... e.g. itunes is working and I'm still managing to play songs through myh machine.. only issue is that the display is totally dark...
Now.. my big issue before I send it across to the service centre is backing up my "Downloads" folder....
how I can go about doing this through terminal ? I think I just might be able to pull it off with the keyboard if I get sufficient and specific help!!!! basically I'm looking for transfer of all contents from "Downloads" folder to an external hard disk with the name "Active" ...
I have a Envy Spectre 14" with Win 8.0. For the last month or so I have sound disappearing (totally) at random times. Rebooting has generally solved the problem...but that can be a pain if I'm in the middle of a lot of projects. It was working this morn....closed the lid...opened it 30 min later and NO sound.
it happened two times today, the screen went totally black, the fans stop working and the "sleep lights" turned on and off. Soon after the disc drive made the sound that id usually makes when turning the computer on.
My tv tuner INTEX IT-TV 150 FM plays only audio. The screen turns totaly white with no video signal. When calling the supporting staff at INTEX, they told me to install HP Pavilion dv4 video driver. Could this be the solution? If so, where could I find the video driver?
I have HP pavilion dv7 which won't let me in BIOS to change boot order.
I have windows 8 32 bit installed and it keep booting normally no matter which key (Esc,F9,F10,F1,F2 etc) at start up, is pressed or keep pressed.. it wont stop booting and wont let me in BIOS. All it does it that if keys are pressed it will start beeping but then boot anyway.
I want to boot it from USB and install WIndows 8.1 64 bit.
I have set a password on my laptop BIOS four years ago and i have forgotten it. i get no error codes to the effect of "system disabled". reset it if possible.
I've had a HP Envy 15 touchsmart laptop (Windows 8 originally, windows 8.1 now) for about 2 months now and haven't had any problems, till a few hours ago i attempted to update the bios of my laptop using the hp support assistant. After the restart, the pc would no longer start up and took me to a blue screen with the error message SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED. Everything I have done so far short of a refresh or reset has not worked and if i could I would like to avoid both as I do not have the bandwith to go download windows 8.1 again.
I own a CQ56-203SG Laptop which was doing fine for years (I do not remember when I bought it). No misuse, no hard hits. New HP Battery since a few month. No difficulties before. Used it with Ubuntu which worked perfect! No M$Windows ever touched this machine. It does not boot any more. Even BIOS is not reachable.Start by pressing the power button leads to: Light in power button is on, orange light in key F12 is on, white light in CapsLock key is slowly blinking. No signal by coded blinking recognised.
Fan is on, slowly, constant.Monitor remains dark. HD lamp does one short flicker when powered on, remains dark then. It does NOT make a difference if lid is closed or open. Obviously even going to BIOS is not working. Last status before failure:OS working, lid closed, machine was sleeping.Did not wake up. After several attempts it woke up exactly once. After restart it remained dark for ever. Formerly all that worked fine for years. I tried to power down completely including battery remove and then press power button to drain capacitors. No result. I tried the Win + b keystroke combination, no result. Machine dead.

I have a ZBook 14 on which I have defined a password for the Guest User of the BIOS. Accidentally I lost this password and now I cannot access anything in the BIOS. Is there any way to reset the Guest User password?
