Currently using Norton Identity Safe's standalone password manager, but would like to start using Lenovo's instead. Attempted to import .DAT and/or .CSV files from Norton, but no option for these file types appeared in Lenovo's Password Manager.
If not an option to import directly, is it possible to add one of the files to the location Lenovo stores the password manger entries?
i recently bought my W520 and everything works just fine - except for the internal webcam.
I installed the drivers (current version) from the Lenovo web site but the webcam won't turn on. The green just wouldn't turn on and when I press Fn+F6 the communication tool shows up without any webcam video. Same thing for skype or any other webcam tool.
Sometimes after booting it works for a few seconds but then the image freezes and it won't start again until after several system restarts.
System Details:

When will there be a BIOS update to fix the UEFI/Bitlocker issue? The TPM won't pass the keys to Windows when UEFI mode is on. An X220 owner has this issue as well: [URL] ....

I realize that there are several threads on W520 shutdowns, but I haven't quite found a similar problem to mine: A random, sudden shutdown occurs while the laptop is on battery. The problem does not occur when using the power adaptor. It also seems to have nothing to do with physical movement of the laptop, nor with power consumption/heat. After going blank from one second to the next, the laptop restarts. Seeing that the laptop works fine with the power adaptor, is there any reason to believe that components on the main board could be the problem? If not, I could just get another battery, even though this still seems ok.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have 2 x 4GB sticks of G.SKill F3-8500CL7D-8GBSQ DDR3-1066 PC3-8500 CL7-7-7-20 SO-DIMM.
They worked perfectly as the only memory sticks in a W500, but I'd like to install them in addition to the 2 x 4GB Lenovo memory sticks that came with the W520.
Is this going to work and be stable at all? After reading the W520 specs, I'm still uncertain about the memory speeds of the two different sets of sticks and if that is a real compatibility issue. I don't know enough about memory specs.
I've got W520 with Windows 7 + all the latest drivers.
About a week ago I run into the following problem:
1) The onboard speakers don't play any sounds. Instead they produce a single click when music playback starts. And that's it.
2) Music plays fine via the headphones. So the clicking sound occurs with the onboard speakers only.
I've got all the latest drivers installed. I tried to reinstall the Conexant and nVidia driver but it didn't work.
I've had this continual problem with my W520, which I can't seem to solve. Windows Search is disabled, I go into services, set it back to Automatic and start the service. It works fine all day long, no problems. When I shut off the machine, sometimes, not everytime, when I bring the machine back up, the service is now disabled and I go through this entire process again. What is strange is that at other times, after reboot, it is still enabled.
I've checked the event log, there is only an entry that indicates that the service was disabled, but there is no information in there which indicates the process that did the disable.

On the software side, I tend to keep it light, thus making it quicker and less likely to have conflicts.
Is there any tool out there which can tell me what process keeps disabling this service? It is very frustrating, having to go through this all the time. I know there will be some that say it slows down your machine, that may be their experience, but it is not mine and that penalty is outweighed by the convenience of being able to quickly search a 6GB email account.
I just updated my ThinkPad W520 using the System Update utility and after rebooting I realize that the battery icon is totally gray and shows the message "Battery not installed". Checking the installations log of System Update I see

And the Windows battery icon shows the info correctly. Is there any way to uninstall the updates?
Just upgraded from Windows 8.1 preview to Windows 8.1... since then my display doesn't look right at all. Resolution seems to be set to 1920x1080... which I belive is correct.
But text, icons and windows seem bigger than they were before.
Also the display is lacking sharpness around text. Do I need to upgrade some drivers or something?
I have a new W510 but I cannot get the fingerprint reader working for Windows logon. I have the Lenovo fingerprint software installed. It can enroll my fingerprint with ease, which also shows that the reader works. I have turned on the option "use fingerprint scan instead of password when logging into windows". When I restart Windows, I see a fingerprint logon option, but it still defaults to CTRL+ALT+DELETE. When I pick the fingerprint option and scan my fingerprint, the lght blinks twice and nothing happens. I know from my old W510 that I should be seeing a Lenovo Fingerprint icon on the logon screen, but I just cannot get that to display. What have I missed?
The virtual agent was no support - it gives me a setting that doesn't exist, tells me to reboot, tells me that the first time I log in I will need both fingerprint and password, but afterwards it only needs fingerprint.
Btw my mobo,cpu,memory i believe were all replaced last time i took it in with this issue... Still getting it consistently:

I thought before maybe its Bluetooth related as sometimes when screen would turn black and then come back, I would get a 'Bluetooth Device Not Discoverable'. So turned off Bluetooth in the BIOS, but still having display/sleep issues.
I removed hte Lenovo Power Manager/PM Driver, and turned off sleeping in the Windows power settings (in every setting including if Low Battery Action).
Using Win 8.1 x64 and the latest Synaptics drivers, if I'm typing or holding a key the left click does not work. I've tried every setting in the Synaptics control panel and can't figure out how to disable this behavior.
How to disable this? It's very annoying, especially as there is a delay after pressing a key before I can click the mouse of around a half second.
Easily recreated by opening notepad and holding down the A key, then trying to left click something.
Just received my Thinkpad W520 4270 CTO with bluetooth installed. It was a DOS workstation that I installed Win 7 x64 Ultimate on and I finally got all the drivers installed but the bluetooth software says there is no BT device connected to my laptop. I checked the BIOS settings and confirmed the BT is enabled. I even disabled it, saved, then enabled it to toggle. Hitting the Fn+5 combo doesn't trigger the light or any "Found New Hardware." When the laptop first boots up the BT light flashes along with the wifi light and the HDD activity light. I haven't yet been able to load another OS, but I'm downloading Arch Linux and BackTrack 5 to test to see it's possibly an OS issue.
I realize the sticky about the "do not update the bluetooth drivers" but I'm not getting my bluetooth to work at all, not even being recognized by the OS as an "unknown device."

The IEEE 1394 device is now completely missing from device manager. It seems like hardware failure. BIOS reset and factory restore did not resolve the matter.
I have contacted a local service depot so the machine will go in for warranty service next week (after labour day weekend) if not resolved beforehand.
I have a w520 that is out of warranty. From time to time, the screen just turns off while I'm using it (no, not a dimming/screen off during idle isse). Everything else works perfectly though. I have to shake the laptop (lol, seriously...) and the screen comes back on! It's been getting more and more frequent. What gives? Is this a known issue? Is there some loose connection somewhere inside? What should I check?
View 6 Replies View RelatedIf the system has been on battery at any point of the session, color calibration seems to mess itself up according to what's on screen. If darker colors dominate the screen, the colors slowly (but visibly) go all weird. When there's mostly white content on screen, it returns to normal.
I've been browsing some power management settings and none of them seems to relate to this. The system is W520 with FHD screen, Intel 8.15.10.2538 drivers, Nvidia 332.21 drivers, Windows 7. This does not occur in Ubuntu, nor on an external monitor.
I am using Lenovo W520 with windoiws 7, RAM 8 GB. It is very slow and when I type something it appears with noteable delay. Also i am using virtal machne windows XP there. How can I get better performance
View 7 Replies View RelatedThis morning upon booting up my ThinkPad W520, the multi-card reader is no longer working. A look at the Device Manager (Windows 7, 64-bit) shows the "Base System Device", and reports "The drivers for this device are not installed." Attempting to get Windows to natively install the drivers does not work. Some googling shows others with similar troubles in the past; recommendations include installing a Ricoh card reader driver for Windows XP or Vista; this did not work. Other available drivers include 8ass82ww.exe and 8axv51ww.exe - these do not work. Installing Lenovo's own Support Center software shows the Base System Device driver is not installed. I can't find a way to install it. I've tried installing driver exe files and searching for those same files using the Windows browse-for-files window when installing drivers for Base System Device.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI upgraded my w520 from Win 7 to Win 8 last year with zero problems. Now I upgraded my W520 Win 8 to Win 8.1 via the store download. Except the webcam everything works fine.
In e.g. the Skype desktop application, Google Hangouts or the camera app, the built in webcam no longer works.
The green light turns on, but I just get the crossed out camra icon in e.g. the Skype video options. No video.
I see there are no drivers yet for Win 8.1 on the Lenovo support site for the w520 camera. In device manager it still shows the 2011 camera driver 1.1.0.1147 and says "This device is working properly."
But it does not work properly. How to get the camera to work or is it just a matter of waiting for a driver to be released eventually?
I tried uninstalling, reinstalling, camera is enabled in the Bios and permissions are set to give Skype and the camera app access to the camera. I also tried the W530 drives as was suggested elsewhere.
I have this as an "other device" in device manager. I had to do a full reinstall a month ago but thought all the things were installed.
Also there is a second "unknown device" with location "on Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Embedded Controller" are these related or is this a second issue ?
I'm trying to have simultaneous sound from both the headphone jack as well as the internal speakers. I've enabled the concurrent audio via the Smart Audio panel (Audio Director), tried the blue and red buttons (got successful results), but all of the computer sounds still come from the headphone jack.

I rencently reinstalled windows 7 on my W520 and it refuses to activate my nvidia quadro 2000m (Code 43).
For a while the fan is overheating and the right left hinge become very hot. I think the graphic card is dead but I want to know why and if I can stop the overheating. Is the the graphic card soldered onto the motherboard of the W520?
Only the Intel HD graphic chipset is running ...
I have a quad core Lenovo W520 (i7-2820QM) equipped with Intel AMT. I have all RAM slots populated (original 2GB in each that came with the machine). I have updated to the latest BIOS (1.42 at the time of writing) and latest Intel Management Engine Firmware 7.1 (7.1.85.1216 at the time of writing). The machine has Crucial 256GB X100 SSD installed in the main compartment and a regular HDD in UltraBay.
The computer acts normally in sleep mode and restart sequence only when Intel AMT states that "ME is in recovery state..." during boot.
When it looks like AMT is happy problems begin. The problem is that when I'm trying to put the computer to sleep it goes all the way until the end per normal procedure and then suddenly decides to power itself off! Obviously Windows doesn't like this and displays recovery suggestions after starting the laptop again. This happens when connected to AC and also when disconnected from it. Also, when computer reboots it turns off all power (i.e. the display along with backlight, indicator LEDs turn off and fans spin down for a sec) inbetween and automatically starts up after that.
I've tested this on Windows 7 and openSUSE 13.1 (which I had lying nearby) and same behavior happens on both OSes. On Windows, all the latest drivers and updates were installed. So I don't think this is driver nor OS dependent - rather firmware/hardware related problem.
What is funny, it doesn't matter whether Intel AMT is activated in BIOS or not. What matters is whether the Management Engine is in some kind of recovery state or not. When it's not, computer starts acting crazy as stated above and behaviour is repeatable. Intel AMT itself seems to work however. Changing the power policy in Intel ME configuration doesn't work for sleep issue.
Some things I've also tried doing:
* Replace CMOS battery (measured its voltage before putting it in, of course) with a new one - no effect
* Tried two different brands of SSDs (OCZ Vertex 3 and Crucial X100) - no effect
* Tried both legacy and UEFI modes - no effect
* Scanned RAM for memory errors - no effect
Could Lenovo try to repeat this issue and possibly do something about this?
I researched I need the Intel SATA AHCI Driver for performing a clean Windows 7 installation
I tried:
1. Mobile Express Chipset SAAT AHCI controler drivers from the (a) Intel websites (b) Lenovo website and (c) extracting drivers from running system
2. tried supplying drivers on DVD/CD and USB
3. tried to integrate drivers into Windows 7 Installation using RT7Lite
4. did bios update
5. switched from AHCO to compatible mode
In any case it finds the driver as the correct one (when I click hide drivers that are not compatible, the one remains). But always displays no driver found and doesn't continue setup.
This seems to be a bug!!!
1. Is there a way to fix this and perform a clean Windows 7 installation without recovery?
2. Am I trying the wrong driver, but have to install a driver for a different device first???
I am about to replace the HDD with an SDD and there can not use recovery!
When I connect my external monitor (ASUS PA248) to my W520, the audio disappears. When I disconnect it, the audio returns. This seems a bizarre link between audio and video, but there it is. Note that the PA248 does NOT have built-in speakers.

How to get rid of this error. This has been occurring for a few months now.
I recently set an HDD password on my W510. Now I would like to disable it again.
Unfortunatly the option to set the password is now inactive in the BIOS: It says "Hard Disk1 Password [User]", but I cannot select the option in order to change it. This appears to be a bug. I once had a T61, where changing the password was no problem.
I would really like to get rid of the password again.
We have new Thinkpad X240 laptops that don't have the ability to change the password using CTRL + ALT + DEL. They are using Windows 8.1. These laptops came with Windows 7 and we used the Lenovo media to install Windows 8. The ability to change the password was present right after the Windows 8 install but when we upgrade to Windows 8.1 from the Microsoft store we can no longer change the password.
View 3 Replies View RelatedMy Thinkpad T430, less than a year old, is having issues - corrupted .dll files, Windows Update not working, all sorts of fun stuff. I've exhausted pretty much every other option I can find to try to repair this at this point. The nuclear option is a reset to Lenovo factory settings from the Windows repair environment accessed by pressing F8 during boot, but before I do that I want to understand *exactly* what I would be doing to my computer.
Specifically: will a factory reset return all Windows system files to their original state, meaning there is no chance that the issues I'm having will persist? Will it guarantee that Windows Update will work again and that all of my .dll and other system files will be in a fresh, non-corrupted state? Does the process replace current system files with original versions that were installed on the computer?
I just don't want to restore to factory settings and find that Windows Update still won't work and now I have to install over a year's worth of updates manually from the Microsoft website, one by one, or go through the trouble of having to reinstall all of my programs, get my files back on the computer, fix settings to be as I want them again, etc. only to not have these issues fixed.
