i have a FW290 CTO that is about a month old. since today, i havent been able to watch a dvd or any blu-ray movie. when i put in a dvd i got this message:
Windows Media Player cannot play this DVD because there is a problem with digital copy protection between your DVD drive, decoder, and video card. Try installing an updated driver for your video card.
so after this message, i tried to put in my dark night blu-ray disc and my intervideo BD player would not work.
what happend?
what do i do?
edit: when i try to run a BD it states " your display environment does not support protected content playback.
i used to be able to play the BDs...what happend?

When I first got my laptop, I was able to play all the CDs in order to download my software, etc. However, now it won't recognize any CD I put in or launch anything. I'm trying to install an Epson printer and I put in the software CD. Nothing will happen. I can hear it whiring and I keep thinking that it'll launch but nothing does. This is what it looks like with the CD in:
Doesn't even show up on the side bar. I can't have a laptop that can't even recognize CDs or DVDs.

I did a clean install of Windows 7 on my Studio XPS 16 and everything is working except I can't play DVDs.
I installed the latest firmware for the DVD and got sound but no video.
I have also installed the latest ATI drivers and chipset with no luck.
Device Manager shows the driver for the monitory is a generic pnp monitor and I cannot set the resolution of the monitor above 1024 x 768. So, I am assuming that my problem is either the monitor driver and/or the ATI driver.

Does anyone know why my Latitude D600 won't play back-up (burnt) dvds, but it plays the original disc? When I put in the burnt disc I hear a clicking sound, but nothing else happens.
I have been trying to use burnt -R discs and dual layer discs; these discs play on other dvd players. Should my laptop plays these discs? And if so why doesn't it? I believe it still has the original drive in it; I bought the laptop second hand.

I have a Sony VGN-AR38G.
I have upgraded the HDD and RAM 2 months ago after a hardisk failure.
Current specs as follows:
Intel Core2 CPU T7400@2.16GHz
Nvidia GeForce Go 7600 GT
2x2G RAM
2x320G HDD
Optical Drive: Mata BD-MLT UJ-210S ATA Device
In device manager it says the device is working properly.
Current driver version is 6.0.6001.18000, which should be the latest (Ver1.06)
The laptop was purchased in June 2007. Broke Dec 2009 due to hardisk failure. Then I upgraded some hardwares (HDD & RAM), reinstalled Vista Home Premium (Burnt disk) then upgraded to Win7 (Retail disk).
Then 2 weeks ago, I left it on battery only, thought it would go into hybernation when the battery drains, however I had a nasty system loss, basically all I had was the Vaio logo and BIOS info, not even F8. So had to reinstall the system. Did pretty much the same thing as before, except I did the firmware upgrade of the optical drive, which I don't recall doing the last time. Then, I'm stuck with the Win7 upgrade.

Let me first start by asking your forgiveness if I have stuffed this quick little guide in the wrong spot. I spent a rather brief 10 minutes searching this forum, and I don't believe I am repeating a write-up someone has already done that follows this simple method. If I am incorrect, I ask a moderator to please place this post in its proper home. As you can see, I am not an avid poster here, and I really don't want to be slammed for not searching with enough gusto, etc.
Alright, on to the quick 'n easy...
I have a new VGN-AW235J, so proceed with courage and fortitude if our letters don't match. I found this as I was trying various ways to cleanse this beautiful machine of it's bloatware. It worked for me, and that is all I will claim.
This method requires that you create the restore DVDs.
If you don't have a handful of restore DVDs, go do that now and come back...and while you're up, bring a snack.
One more disclaimer: I didn't take the greatest notes while doing this, so my instructions may be sufficiently vague to cause minor trepidation on the part of the reader. With that being said, each step should be fairly obvious while in front of your machine...DVDs in hand..........................

I am looking at the Sony VGN-FW378J/B. One of the features I like about it is the Blu Ray. I rent mostly Blu Ray from Netflix as I have the PS3 and can watch them. My girlfriend doesn't so I figure I am in the market for a new notebook, I may as well get the Sony with Blu Ray and HDMI and I can take it to her house and watch Blu Ray on her TV through my laptop. I didn't think anything of it until I was listening to a computer show where they said that some computers won't allow you to play the Blu Ray through the TV.
They called it "mirroring" I believe. Either something in the hardware and DVD protected it from playing on the TV.
So My question is, has anybody hooked their Sony notebook to their TV through the HDMI cable and played a Blu Ray movie? And if it did work how was the quality?

I own a Vaio NS-190J and I had this problem ever since I upgraded to Vista Ultimate from Home Premium. I've also upgraded to Windows 7 RC1 as well. I've tried downloading every BD playback program possible and it still doesn't read BD. DVD's/CD's burn/play fine btw. Is there any way to fix this or is this drive going to be a very expensive DVD drive to me?
Also I have a problem with the keyboard. Whenever I am typing it likes to replace my cursor where ever it pleases it its very annoying.

I just want to warn you that you can never play games using Sony VAIO Keyboard, I tested all New VAIO models at store, and they all have the same Keyboard issue, and that's:
Let's try FIFA 09 for example, while playing you'll see that there is a problem in the keyboard, when holding arrows Down and Right or Down and Left together to move players, then any letter button to (pass, sliding tackle, sprint or whatever else), the game doesn't response to the letter press.
To confirm that issue, open Word or NotePad, hold Down and Right or Down and Left together, then a letter button for example "s", the letter "s" isn't printed.
So you can never play games using Sony VAIO Keyboard, you have to get a GamePad or an external keyboard.

When i try to play a 1080p movie over hdmi on my tv, it doesn't run smoothly ( i think its called framedrops?)
The videocard is a 9300m GS and since i've got hybrid graphics, a driver update is not possible.
The laptop is a vaio z21wn.
I've tried multiple things (coreAVC, MPC, VLC, etc..) but none seem to give better output.
Are there other solutions to this problem?

Would I be okay using the highest battery power settings while watching a DVD? That would turn off the graphics card but I wasn't sure if DVD playing really needed it.

current MacBook unibody owners. I'm curious how good is the MacBook when watching DVDs or playing downloaded videos; such as the screen quality and battery life? Does the 1280x800 screen size seem too big?
I'm a Mac & Windows user and love both environments. Yet, I'm unsure if the MacBook will work for me.

I'm not sure whats the best way to rip a DVD, but I keep reading about Mac the ripper and Handbreak. I think I understand that you use Mac the ripper to get on the computer first, then handbreak it if I wana get it on my Ipod. (If this isn't right can some clarify it for me please). But through all my searching I can't seem to find links to download these programs to test these out and play with it...so if anyone is kind enough to provide a link much appreciated.

Just bought my 5920G laptop from Dixons - looks great BUT - I cannot write to any DVD media. I can write to CD and I can read DVDs no problem.
Windows media player suggests I get compatible DVD media for the drive speed - I have used 3 types - all up to 16x.
What speed should they be and what media is recommended?
I want to create some backup image DVDs as the PC comes with nothing!

I have an HDX16 1050ev.
When I got it, I forgot to make recovery discs and now that I got it back from the service (they replaced the HDD cause it was malfunctioning) its empty, as they told me.
I kept a backup of the Recovery partition (D with windows back up and by Copy Paste before I took the laptop at the service. Now I copied them all back at the new partition that I made.
When I make a new partition in the new HDD, 10GB in size, and try the Recovery Option (Esc and then F11) it says no bootable device.
Is there a way to make the notebook see that the recovery partition is actually in place?

Does anyone have any issues watching DVDs? I have a few DVDs I made from a Panasonic DVD/VCR (transferred from a VHS to DVD) and it will randomly say skipping over damaged area while playing on my MB using the standard DVD Player software. The same burned DVDs work fine on Panasonic and my roomates DVD player. Would it be better if I tried using VLC or some other program?

What is going on with this acer software? Used to be able to watch blu-rays on something called acermedia. Did an upgrade to something with a ridiculous name - BYOC, and now the abmedia solution doesn't allow viewing of discs. Is this correct, or has something gone wrong with update?

I purchased a 6920-6508 for my mother so she has a PC to get email, surf the web, do some web video calls with the grand kids and keep pictures on, etc. So this laptop came with 4gb of ram, a DVD RW+- and Vista 64 on it but I can't burn DVDs. It can burn CDs with no problems but I get no joy when trying to burn a DVD (I am using TDK DVD+R 1-16x 4.7GB media). It can read DVD just fine, and I took one of the DVD+R disks that I was trying to write on, over to my 4 year old PC with a DVD burner in it and I was able to burn a disk just fine and the 6920 could read the disk I just burned with no problems.
Now if laptop came with a set of recovery DVDs I wouldn't be so frustrated, I just can't see my mother burning DVDs anytime soon, but I would like to burn a set of recovery disks so if she ends up trashing the system I can help her through a recovery process.
I have it all set up for her, and I want to mail it off to her, but I dread sending it to her with out the recovery disks. I am wondering if there is just some kind of driver problem for the DVD burner not being quite 64bit ready and maybe it that can be upgraded to a working driver, or maybe there is some kind of work around, but I just don't know.
Does your DVD burner work in your 6920-6508? According to the DVD player is a Slimtype DVD A DS8A1P ATA Device and the driver version is 6.0.6001.18000.
