Sony :: Vaio VGN-FW93XS One Month Review

Sep 23, 2009

The good:3.06 Dual Core CPU (Probably best for a notebook PC, performs better than quads IMO)1GB GPU (Mobile Radeon HD 4650) /Almost impossible to get a 1GB GPU on other brands with this price.

I have a problem with the GPU (see "the bad" below) but other than that, can play 3D intensive games like Crysis/Crysis Warhead in "Gamer 4xAA" settings without any problem (well until the PC crashes...).

High resolution screen (1920*1080 on a 16.4" / 134 PPI) Again, a no-brainer for that price.Price: Paid 134K JPY (approx $1400). Similar configuration costs over $2K in Dell, and has 512MB GPU.....

Sony :: Vaio NW Review

Jul 29, 2009

Sony Vaio NW Review

The Sony Vaio NW is a 15.5” widescreen notebook recently released onto the market. It’s a budget machine, but you get a big bang for your buck. Currently, there is not a Configure-to-Order option available; you have to select from preconfigured machines. Nonetheless, all the current configurations offer just about as much processing power as a relatively demanding user would want, with Intel Core 2 Duo processors, option for discrete graphics, etc. Consumers looking for an inexpensive 15” notebook with great features should give this a serious look, although those that require lengthy battery times might be turned off. In general though, this is a great multimedia machine.

There are several preconfigured options available on sonystyle.com, and other configs are available in retail stores such as Best Buy and Staples. Retail stores usually have cheaper versions but they come with integrated graphics, whereas online the configurations offered all have ATI discrete graphics.

My configuration:

Intel Core 2 Duo P7350 2.0GHz, 3MB L2 cache, FSB 1066MHz (Centrino 2)
Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit (a free upgrade to Windows 7 is available)
Splashtop Linux Browser for Instant-On access to the web
15.5” 1366x768 glossy widescreen display (WXGA).............

Sony :: VAIO VGN-NS230E Review

Sep 25, 2009

Sony VAIO VGN-NS230E

Weighing at 6+lbs, this general-purpose notebook is a good buy at around 700USD. The 15.4" screen of 1280x800 is stocked with an Intel Pentium dual Core, a 250GB hard disk drive and 3 GB of RAM. Pentium Dual Core? What is Sony thinking about in this computing age?

Regardless this is a good overall notebook that can be very attractive due to its low price. Having this system for over 3 months now, and I have nothing but praise for its quiet and smooth performance.

It is EPA Energy Star compliant with a Greenpeace policy rating of 4.0

Sony :: My Two Months VAIO S Review

Apr 12, 2010

I have the European Black version with Core i3 and HD graphics called VPCS11X9E.

I ordered the VAIO S as soon as it was released in Denmark, I actually wanted the Z, but it's too expensive for me, I did some changes to my VAIO S to get at least some of the screen quality from the Z to my S (read below):

1. Great build quality, no flex anywhere.

2. It's basically silent during surfing and light office work. The fan will turn on only under stress.

3. Keyboard is excellent. It's actually the best keyboard I have ever used, I love it. Makes me want to write more than I should.

4. Lots of connections, HDMI, VGA, Card Reader, 3 USB, everything I need.

5. Integrated DVD-drive, few 13" actually have this.

6. The screen is by default not very good, but I did 2 things that really helped a lot. First I purchased a Vikuiti ARMR200 screen protector , which turns the VAIO S glossy screen into a matte screen. Second (and even more important), I calibrated the screen using Spyder3 Elite from Datacolor (download my current calibration below). After this, the screen is excellent, the viewing angles are still not that good, but at least the screen is good enough for me to my webwork with proper colors, I would have prefered a little higher resolution, 1440x900 pixels would have been perfect.

7. I also have the matching dockingstation called VGP-PRS10, again great build quality and I really like the idea of not having to plug in all the cables when working from the desk, just note that the HD graphics version that I have, does not support DVI out on the dockingstation, don't ask me why.

8. Btw, after re-installing Windows and doing a clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate, the notebook is blazing fast, I have no speed issues at all, amazing.

Sony :: Vaio Z Review For The Anal Buyer

Jan 6, 2009

I'm trying to avoid doing useful work, so I thought that I'd type in a quick review for the more discriminating / demanding buyers out there.

My strongest biases: like quiet computing, must have a great keyboard (good feel, no weird key placement, good key travel), must have a good screen (no grain, not too much bleed,

good color accuracy, good black levels), high-res screen, good touchpad/touchstick, good quality speakers, card reader slot, bang for the buck, light weight ( You can't really notice it, and if you really must have 800, then just auto-hide the taskbar :> If you already autohide the taskbar, autohide the status bar in firefox

Sony :: VAIO ZScreen Protector Review

Jan 2, 2010

Disclaimer: If I am breaking any forum rules by posting links of ebay or my flickr site, I apologize in advance. I am also in no way affiliated with this user selling the item and do not take any form/type of credit from the seller. I am simply a customer on ebay reviewing a product I have purchased.

After reviewing a lot of complaints about the chassy/keyboard/wrist-rest scratching the screen, I simply had to get a screen protector for this really expensive investment. I've purchased all kinds of screen protectors from ebay and only found one that does not burden me with negatives. I wanted to make it seem as though there is NO screen protector on my screen. So I purchased the below and boy was I surprised.

(I removed the ebay link, just to avoid breaking forum rules, so instead, search "Anti-Glare Screen Protector 13.1 SONY VAIO Z Series")

I purchased two of these. Because if I screw up with one, i'll have a backup. Fortunately for me, I was able to put this one my screen with only ONE tiny bubble, which is on the corner of my screen. Everything was flushed and fit perfectly...

Sony :: VPCZ112GX/S Quick Review

May 20, 2010

I purchased the Sony VPCZ112GX/S from Best Buy online for $1729.

It has

2.4ghz i5 core cpu
led back lit 13" 1600x900 screen
4 gigs of ram
330 geforce w/1 gig of ram
128 gig solid state hard drive
Came with Windows 7 but also came with a Windows XP downgrade CD

weighs like 3 pounds....

It was between this and a Macbook Pro and I'm VERY happy I went with the Sony over the Macbook Pro. Macbooks are nice on the outside but this machine is just EVERYTHING I could possibly want from a laptop at a great price. Runs games great, screen is amazing, decent battery life. I just couldn't say enough good things about the laptop. If anyone is interested in buying one and has questions just ask me, but I'll save you the run around...

I looked at 30+ different laptops, read tons of reviews and this was by far the best overall machine for the money hands down.

Sony :: FW 465 J/HInitial Review (with More In-depth Analysis To Come)

Jul 7, 2009

Just received my 465 J/H from JandR yesterday. Speedy shipping, as the site said that it ships in 3-5 business days and I received it 4 business days after ordering (though I live in CT, where shipping only takes 1 business day).

My initial impressions are as follows:

-While the shipping was fast from JandR, I was very disappointed to see that the package wasn't double-boxed. JandR did wrap the Sony box up in a rubber-sheet material and taped it up, providing a bit of protection, but would much rather have seen true double boxing with a couple extra layers of protection for the Sony box.

-After seeing a few finishes in person, I decided on the Titanium finish, which is a nice warm silver sheen. The black looked better on screen than in person, and the chocolate brown just wasn't my cup of tea, although the finish is actually the nicest of the three (very refined looking, just a little too dark for me). Overall build and finish quality of the computer is excellent.

-The weight of the FW is very surprising. While it is undoubtedly the lightest of the 16.4" laptops, it actually feels lighter than my old Dell D620. Maybe due to weight distribution (most of it is in the back, near the hinge, where the battery is) or overall unit shape, but either way it feels lighter than it looks...............

Dell :: 6 Month Old XPS M1330, Second GPU Failure

Mar 2, 2009

I have the M1330, T8300, LED, 4GB, 250 GB, 8400 GS. This is the second time the GPU failed(GPU failed first week of use) and there will be a technician coming later on this week.

Has anyone had success getting a replacement laptop, i.e XPS Studio 13. Seeing that I have 6 months left on the warranty and the extra 1 year for GPU issues, should I continue to get the 8400 fixed?

Have they resolved the issue with these "newly soldered motherboards"? Should I just ask to be replaced with an X3100? I don't really game, but do watch a lot of movies, especially HD rips.

Acer :: Laptop Slowing Down After A Month

Jun 15, 2009

One thing I hate about PCs and laptops is that they inevitably slow down, which is somewhat understandable as OS and software demands increase year on year. However, my fear is that my Acer 6930G is slowing down on me only after a month of use! I can see the beginnings of it struggling to do what used to be simple tasks.

For example, streaming HD videos on the net (youtube HD, GameTrailers HD) was a cake walk during the first few weeks of use. Now it struggles and stutters when trying to stream sub-HD content. Opening the task manager shows that its maxing out both cores of my CPU when viewing these videos. This is abnormal. And from time to time the system will fail to respond for 30 seconds or so.

I'm not too happy as I've only recently purchased the laptop. There are probably many reasons why, but I'm not sure where to begin. Anyone be able to lend me some insight at why my laptop is behaving like this all of a sudden?

HP/Compaq :: HP DM3 Completely Dead After 1 Month

Dec 29, 2009

I was a happy DM3-1030US customer for about a month until this morning when an incredibly strange and frustrating problem has rendered the laptop useless.

Last night when I finished using the PC I left it disconnected from the charger so it naturally ran out of juice and turned itself off.

This morning I plugged it back in and slid the power switch, the fans turned on power light lit up (but not caps lock and Wi-Fi light is orange) but the screen is completely black. The fans remain spinning, computer is clearly receiving power and turned on but nothing happens at all. I've tried leaving it in that state for 30+ minutes to no avail.

I tried removing the battery for 20+ minutes then trying again to no avail. Most frightening of all I completely removed the power and turned on the PC via direct AC power with exactly the same result. This leads me to believe something has completely failed at a hardware level in this machine. Has anyone else experienced anything at all like this?

I'm very dissapointed that such an issue is occuring with a brand new machine like this. I've always thought the price I paid (around $500 from staples with multiple rebates) was too good to be true and now that appears to be the case. Unless HP is extremely graceful in their resolution of this matter I don't see myself purchasing another product from them again, which is a shame since I've purchased multiple laptops as well as my 30" monitor from them in the past. I was even considering purchasing the new Envy 14 when it's released.

HP/Compaq :: Month Old Dv4theavy Flickering Of Screen

May 13, 2009

My friend received a dv4t a month ago, and we did clean install on it day one. But this morning, it started flickering heavily - past the point where its 90 degrees to table surface. So while opening the screen lid, everything seems and works fine upto the points when screen is approx perpendicular to keyboard, and even a slight push beyond that and screen either goes blank or it flickers heavily altering white and black screens, no desktop visible. I did another clean install, and problem was persistent even while clean install was in progress, and even after it was done and I installed drivers for it from SWSetwup folder. I am currently chatting with HP rep and he apparently knows nothing about it.

HP/Compaq :: Battery Dies One Month After Warranty Expires

Feb 18, 2010

One month after my warranty expires, my 12 cell dv5t battery stops dead in its tracks. No warning, no nothing! (Was working fine up until it died, and hadn't even lost much usage time, considering its been used fairly much.) And I have a 3 year extended warranty, that, of course, doesn't cover the battery!

But there's a tiny bit of good news. . . I learned a very good tip ---I didn't know, until I was on the phone with the HP sales guy spending $160 for a new one (double grr) that you can still use your laptop with a dead battery, if you take the battery out! I thought there was no way to use my laptop, and now I can, so at least I won't lose valuable computing time while I'm waiting for UPS. Small consolation, but I HATE it when I don't have access to my computer!

Dell :: Inspiron E1705/9400 BIOS Update This Month

Dec 5, 2009

It's been over two years since the last update, but Dell finally released a patch for the faulty nVidia graphics chips to help delay failure. That's the only fix listed in the A10 release. I wanted to let everyone know that if you have an nVidia graphics card in your E1705 or any other laptop from 2006-2008 you should check for the latest BIOS update because these cards have faulty thermal design that causes overheating and failure. The symptoms are odd colored pixels, video flickering, rebooting and system crashes, program crashes, odd lines on screen, etc - once you start to exerience this it's already too late, your chip is damaged and needs to be replaced. Likely, at this point, every system out there is probably already experiencing some form of failure so to be safe, if you're still under warranty, I'd use it to get a new card as soon as you can and apply this BIOS update. Anyway, you can find the BIOS update here:

Sony :: VAIO- If A VAIO Had No Ram Should (if All Else Was Working) It Be Getting POST Beeps

Looking a little more i found that all the ram is missing , so now im not sure if its worth buying some ram to see if it works or not ? The lack of ram would prob explain the lack of display but i wonder if i should be getting POST beeps at least, which im not.

So my question is if a VAIO had no ram should (if all else was working) it be getting POST beeps ?
