Sony :: 1 Month Old Vaio Overheating
Jan 22, 2009
When I watched a film the other day the laptop was actually burning me. I installed speedfan and it said the temperature was 74c
I thought well to stop it burning me I could plug it into my HDTV only to receive a BSOD 20 mins into the film claiming a video card failure.
It still boots up fine but even on desktop idiling its still at 60cand gets hotter still when doing basic tasks

The good:3.06 Dual Core CPU (Probably best for a notebook PC, performs better than quads IMO)1GB GPU (Mobile Radeon HD 4650) /Almost impossible to get a 1GB GPU on other brands with this price.
I have a problem with the GPU (see "the bad" below) but other than that, can play 3D intensive games like Crysis/Crysis Warhead in "Gamer 4xAA" settings without any problem (well until the PC crashes...).
High resolution screen (1920*1080 on a 16.4" / 134 PPI) Again, a no-brainer for that price.Price: Paid 134K JPY (approx $1400). Similar configuration costs over $2K in Dell, and has 512MB GPU.....

I have a FW-390J and yesterday I have noticed a dead pixel appeared at the lower left corner, that is new and was not there before..
This morning I found another dead pixel very near to the first one and if I focus enough I can see a couple of more fainted dots..
I feel a bit frustrated and disappointed. I had the same problem with a my previous Toshiba A300 which I replaced with this model

I bought a VPCF111FD about 3 months ago and on my 3rd day of purchase, my laptop froze while browsing firefox with 3 browsers open and a youtube link. The fan started to make a lot of noise and I could feel a lot of heat coming from the side grill. I had to manually shut it off.
Just last week, the problem began again when it was a warm day in the house. I was playing a video game (League of Legends) and the computer froze while the image on the screen turned purple as heat began to pour out of the machine. I freaked out and shut down the computer, and when I came back an hour later to turn it on, it would get to the Vaio screen (or Windows screen sometimes) and then just freeze as the fan picked up again. This happened several times until a message displayed saying, "The i7 processor is now booting from the factory image".
The next day, everything ran completely fine and I even tested by running Team Fortress 2 and doing CAD modelling and no freezes occured. I made sure by doing a spybot, Avast, Defragment, and System restore scans. Then today, the same thing happened with the laptop freezing while I'm playing a video game.
I think the problem is with the fans since they don't get loud until the computer freezes, but I'm not entirely sure if heat is the problem since there are days when I can game for hours on end with nothing happening.

Recently I purchased a Sony Vaio VGN-SZ750n, and I've noticed that this computer runs VERY VERY hot.
The GPU runs at about 60 degrees celcius
The Two cores are running at about 52-55 degrees celcius.
The program I'm using to check the temperatures is Speedfan.

I've got a european Sony Vaio Z (first generation), which seems to have some major overheating issues, especially when it's connected to an external display.
Setup:
Sony Vaio Z11VN -> Docking station -> NEC2690WUXi (running at 1920x1200)
Here's a summary of temperatures when this machine is in SPEED mode (Nvidia 9300gs) in Windows XP (idle)
GPU: 92C(198F)
HD0: 41C(106F)
Temp1: 66C(151F)
Core0: 78C(172F)
Core1: 78C(172F)
Clearly, the temperature drops if I switch to STAMINA mode, or if I unplug the laptop from the docking station, however, in the latter case the temperature drops to perhaps 70C.. so that is without running it on the external 1920x1200 display.
and when running 3d applications or games, the laptop can simply shut itself off for no reason whatsoever (overheated?)
I've heard about overheating problems of the NVIDIA GPUs.. is this such a case? (NVIDIA 9300GS)
I'd like to know if anyone else have had this problem with their Vaio Z (i've seen ppl having problems with the FZ)
My model is a VGN-Z11VN (swedish, although distributed via the UK)

I owned previous Z with P8400 and it was very hot when 100% loaded with 3D-applications (3DMark or games) in speed mode. It is known to overheat with T9900 as well. Now Z uses GT 330M which outputs almost twice as much heat as 9300M GS (I wouldn't count i5 because it has same TDP as Core 2 Duo). Other manufacturers aren't putting 330M in such a small enclosure mainly due to thermal limitations.
Sony posted few images showing its heatsink and fan. I don't see significant changes in cooling system and I'm sick of that.
I don't want to pay premium price and then find 330M unusable due to overheating.

I'm pretty sure this has to be a common problem but so far I haven't been able to dig up substantial information about it, although I've found scattered evidence. Just over the 1 year mark and the 1 year warranty expiration for my Vaio VGN-FE890, it started running dramatically warmer, and when running intensive programs it would get extremely hot.
Specifically, it's the right 2/3's of the laptop that gets the hottest, with it getting hotter the farthest to the right. The laptop was originally very cool during the first year, so the change was easily noticeable when it happened.
I can easily hear the CPU fan going all the time when it's on and warmed up, sometimes louder/faster than others, so I know it's working. I need to do some testing to be sure, but at the moment I'm not certain if it's the graphics chip that's generating the extreme heat, or if it's the processor, but it's certainly one of the two. It's definitely not the battery or the HD. It's always very hot ever since the change, but it definitely gets dramatically hotter when running processor and/or graphics intensive programs, especially 2D and 3D games (too hot too touch the underside of the laptop). Needless to say, I haven't overclocked or touched the graphics (NVidia GeForce Go 7400) chip in any way.
Not looking for random idle guesses about the source of the heat, I can do that myself, but if anybody is familiar with the problem or owns a similar model Vaio suffering from the same issue I'd be anxious to hear about it. I want to determine if this is a known, documented problem with this model and/or this graphics chip.

I have the M1330, T8300, LED, 4GB, 250 GB, 8400 GS. This is the second time the GPU failed(GPU failed first week of use) and there will be a technician coming later on this week.
Has anyone had success getting a replacement laptop, i.e XPS Studio 13. Seeing that I have 6 months left on the warranty and the extra 1 year for GPU issues, should I continue to get the 8400 fixed?
Have they resolved the issue with these "newly soldered motherboards"? Should I just ask to be replaced with an X3100? I don't really game, but do watch a lot of movies, especially HD rips.

One thing I hate about PCs and laptops is that they inevitably slow down, which is somewhat understandable as OS and software demands increase year on year. However, my fear is that my Acer 6930G is slowing down on me only after a month of use! I can see the beginnings of it struggling to do what used to be simple tasks.
For example, streaming HD videos on the net (youtube HD, GameTrailers HD) was a cake walk during the first few weeks of use. Now it struggles and stutters when trying to stream sub-HD content. Opening the task manager shows that its maxing out both cores of my CPU when viewing these videos. This is abnormal. And from time to time the system will fail to respond for 30 seconds or so.
I'm not too happy as I've only recently purchased the laptop. There are probably many reasons why, but I'm not sure where to begin. Anyone be able to lend me some insight at why my laptop is behaving like this all of a sudden?

I was a happy DM3-1030US customer for about a month until this morning when an incredibly strange and frustrating problem has rendered the laptop useless.
Last night when I finished using the PC I left it disconnected from the charger so it naturally ran out of juice and turned itself off.
This morning I plugged it back in and slid the power switch, the fans turned on power light lit up (but not caps lock and Wi-Fi light is orange) but the screen is completely black. The fans remain spinning, computer is clearly receiving power and turned on but nothing happens at all. I've tried leaving it in that state for 30+ minutes to no avail.
I tried removing the battery for 20+ minutes then trying again to no avail. Most frightening of all I completely removed the power and turned on the PC via direct AC power with exactly the same result. This leads me to believe something has completely failed at a hardware level in this machine. Has anyone else experienced anything at all like this?
I'm very dissapointed that such an issue is occuring with a brand new machine like this. I've always thought the price I paid (around $500 from staples with multiple rebates) was too good to be true and now that appears to be the case. Unless HP is extremely graceful in their resolution of this matter I don't see myself purchasing another product from them again, which is a shame since I've purchased multiple laptops as well as my 30" monitor from them in the past. I was even considering purchasing the new Envy 14 when it's released.

My friend received a dv4t a month ago, and we did clean install on it day one. But this morning, it started flickering heavily - past the point where its 90 degrees to table surface. So while opening the screen lid, everything seems and works fine upto the points when screen is approx perpendicular to keyboard, and even a slight push beyond that and screen either goes blank or it flickers heavily altering white and black screens, no desktop visible. I did another clean install, and problem was persistent even while clean install was in progress, and even after it was done and I installed drivers for it from SWSetwup folder. I am currently chatting with HP rep and he apparently knows nothing about it.

I've had my DV7T CTO for less then one month and the keyboard letters (on each key) are already starting to fade/rub off. This is insane! I suppose I'm going to have to do without a computer now to send this in to get it replaced instead of HP just sending me a replacement keyboard... Why do they insist on everything being sent into them? A keyboard replacement takes all of 5 minutes to do.

Key new features:
- game profiles now removed from driver to separate XML files. That way when a new game comes out you don't have to wait for the next driver release to have specific fixes or patches for that game.
These profiles will come out as "often as required"
- eyefinity is now supported in crossfire and crossfireX modes
- bezel correction for eyefinity
- 3D support updates
- see pic above

One month after my warranty expires, my 12 cell dv5t battery stops dead in its tracks. No warning, no nothing! (Was working fine up until it died, and hadn't even lost much usage time, considering its been used fairly much.) And I have a 3 year extended warranty, that, of course, doesn't cover the battery!
But there's a tiny bit of good news. . . I learned a very good tip ---I didn't know, until I was on the phone with the HP sales guy spending $160 for a new one (double grr) that you can still use your laptop with a dead battery, if you take the battery out! I thought there was no way to use my laptop, and now I can, so at least I won't lose valuable computing time while I'm waiting for UPS. Small consolation, but I HATE it when I don't have access to my computer!

It's been over two years since the last update, but Dell finally released a patch for the faulty nVidia graphics chips to help delay failure. That's the only fix listed in the A10 release. I wanted to let everyone know that if you have an nVidia graphics card in your E1705 or any other laptop from 2006-2008 you should check for the latest BIOS update because these cards have faulty thermal design that causes overheating and failure. The symptoms are odd colored pixels, video flickering, rebooting and system crashes, program crashes, odd lines on screen, etc - once you start to exerience this it's already too late, your chip is damaged and needs to be replaced. Likely, at this point, every system out there is probably already experiencing some form of failure so to be safe, if you're still under warranty, I'd use it to get a new card as soon as you can and apply this BIOS update. Anyway, you can find the BIOS update here:

i have had 2 problems with my Z for a while and im fed up because its out of warranty and sony will not fix it.
1. The Right hinge i believed is messed up so it does not close correctly. Due to this the right side of the lcd bezel has become cracked on the bottom right i believe because of the tension. (check the pictures). I have to keep a clip on the right bottom side to hold the LCD in place.
2. The notebook is really really hot. Especially using the nvidia. When running any 3d game it takes less than 10 minutes for the temps to get ridiculous on the cpu and gpu. It just turns off when it gets to like 103 or something. Im not sure if its the gpu or cpu but i think they share the same copper pipe for heat. Im going to put arctic silver on both of the chips if i can and clean everything out really good.
My main issue is the hinge. Im not even sure if it is repairable. If it isnt repairable where and how should I go about getting a new Hingle and LCD bezel.

I have just been given a VAIO PCG8A2M (GRX316MP) , i was told "it's broken but if you can fix it yo can have it" so having a quick look at it there's no sign of life on the display but the lights come on and i can here the HDD heads moving about.
Looking a little more i found that all the ram is missing , so now im not sure if its worth buying some ram to see if it works or not ? The lack of ram would prob explain the lack of display but i wonder if i should be getting POST beeps at least, which im not.
So my question is if a VAIO had no ram should (if all else was working) it be getting POST beeps ?

I don't know whats the diference (besides the price), between VAIO TZ295N & VAIO TZ395N. Specs in all the websites I've checked say they have exactly the same components: Intel coreduo 1.33Ghz 2GB RAM DVD-RW and 64GB SSD Hardrive. I was wonder if the diference might be in the hard drive interface, with the TZ295N being PATA and TZ395N being SATA.

I'm wondering if the Blu-ray optical drive (Panasonic UJ-232A) of the (old) VAIO Z series will be able to fit into the (new) VAIO Z series? I would really appreciate it if anyone is able to answer my question.
The reason I'm asking is because I'm seriously thinking of selling my VAIO Z690 & just buying the base Sony VAIO Z (VPCZ112GX/S). I may just be able to afford that base model & the icing on the cake will definitely be the UJ-232A drive being able to fit into the (new) VAIO Z series & work.
