Sony :: Vaio Z R4041M3 BIOS Disables EFI BOOT
Oct 24, 2009
I flashed by BIOS with the R4041M3 so I can install the latest NVidia drivers for Windows 7.
I wanted to enable "Advanced" options with the InsydeH20 hack (which requires EFI boot) - and I kept getting those
"Remove disc or other media" messages.
I thought something went wrong with my USB stick, tried at least 5 of them and finally also tried Windows image itself - with no luck!
Then, I switched back to old BIOS - and the EFI boot worked immediately on the first USB drive!

if it is possible to update my Z540C's bios (current version: R2168M3) to R4041M3 without any problems?
My concern is there might be some hardware issues that might compromise the performance of the laptop given the fact that my model is an older one.

I downloaded all win 7 drivers, and I'm ready for a clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate 64b on my Vaio. I wonder whether it would be wise to first install the bios upgrade for Win 7, version R4041M3, before I start the OS installation?

Updated: Found a better way to backup Bios only, Please see the end of this message
Let say your Vaio Z is using Bios R4040M3 and you move to Bios R4041M3 to use the official VT support. Later on, you want to move back to R4040M3 to use the Advance Menu hack. Unfortunately, you cannot move back as Sony never publish the R4040M3 Bios update. This is my current situation.
I decided to investigate a way to back up the current Bios. Using a program called Universal extractor, I managed to extracted the files in the original Bios update. The bios update uses a program called Insydeflash to flash the Bios. The Insydeflash uses a file called platform.ini to control its setting.
In the platform.ini file, there is a section called [FDFile]. The section [FDFile] has a parameter called BackupName. If we put in a file name here, the Insydeflash should save your current Bios into that file. Unfortunately, I cannot make it work with the Sony supplied Insydeflash. (version 3.38).
I managed to get the newer version of Insydeflash (version 3.72). The newer version has a new ini section called [BackupROM], as the following:
..........
[BackupROM]
Flag=0
FilePath=c:
FileName=....................

Working on my daughter's Sony. A couple months ago the CD/DVD drive stopped working,probably due to physical damage or bumping while open etc.
Now a couple of days ago when trying to start a screen came up about winload.exe, an unexpected i/o error--OXC0000e9 etc. Tried the option to boot into safe mode but nothing happened,computer just shut down after a while.
Today I tried the Vaio recovery disc using an external DVD usb drive,(I enabled the boot option in the bios). It says "loading Windows files" for about 5 seconds then goes to a small Microsoft logo for a few minutes and then shuts down.
I have Acronis True Image installed on another computer so I tried the emergency boot disc I had made. It brings up the Acronis program,reading it from the CD I guess. I tried the Startup recovery manager option but an error window came up "no hard disc recognized"
Now when trying to load normally without the DVD hooked up it says "Error loading operating system"

SONY VAIO VGN-NS105N
I want to boot from a usb stick, but can't do it.
I accessed the BIOS and enabled "external".
Then I re-sorted so boot from external device was first choice, cd-rom was second choice and the hard disk third choice.
When I installed the usb stick and attempted the boot I get an error 15.

I was flashing the newest BIOS to my SR290 last night and in the middle of flashing it froze. I waited quite a while to make sure it wasn't just taking its sweet time but eventually had to pull the battery as holding the power button didn't even do anything.
So I wait a few and then try to boot it back up and it won't power up at all. I plug it in and the charging light won't turn on.

I am very close to deciding on Sony for my next machine.
Half of the people hate them. Half love them. Half the reviews say there are crap. Half say they are machines built by Gods.
It is a lot to sift through.
The WEIRDEST thing I have heard is about the BIOS and how it is not really a completely hardware controlled BIOS like most are .....

1. Is it possible to boot from an external drive connected via e-SATA or USB? I work as a developer and sometimes need to test the software on different operating systems. I often use Virtual-pC but sometimes I need a non-virtual environment.
2. Is it very hard to replace the internal hard drive (for same reason as in 1)? Currently I use a Dell Latitude where it is very easy to swap hard drives, just loosen two screews and slide the hard drive bay.
I have sent a mail to Vaio support here in Sweden but I haven't got any answer

When you boot your Vaio you will hear a special chime, this is one of Sony Vaio's feature. I know that some people do not like this sound and disable it in the boot menu. On the contrary, I quite like this chime. I want to use it in my mobile phone as a ringtone or a message sound. I try to find it in my Vaio S36 but couldn't find it. Can anyone please help me find the boot sound file or tell me where it is located in hard drive?

I own a Sony VAIO VGN-S460 wich has de heating known issue.
I found a post in this forum wich talks about a BIOS revision R0101V0 or R0102V0 that solves this issue.
However the post is closed (it is from 2005) and all de download links are dead and I can't find anywhere those BIOS.
I could find R0103V0, but it needs neither R0101V0 or R0102V0 installed for the update.

I just recieved my Sony Vaio FW490 today. After uninstalling the trial version of Office 2007 (student version), windows refuses to boot normally. I tried several system resores without success.
Although it said that the restore worked properly, I kept rebooting to repair windows or vaio restore center or something like that. I finally called Sony tech support, and they walked me through restoring the C drive to its original state option

Any idea how to re-enable the settings?
