Acer :: CPU Upgrade Failure

Jan 16, 2009

I attempted to upgrade my ageing aspire 3053 to the quickest processor I could find, a Turion mobile X2 - TL-60 to be exact.

I prepared well for it, buying arctic silver 5, IPA and whatnot. I even paid some dodgy ebayer £2.50 for the service and repair guide for it.

However, it has not gone very well, after installing said new processor, the only thing the machine would do was turn on, pass POST and then the fan would spin at 3 bazillion RPM and then switch off. Cue 7 attempts of applying the thermal compound and much swearing, still to no avail.

After leaving it on the coffee table in bits for the past 3 weeks, I finally decided to call it a draw and re-install the old Sempron. Oh dear. Didnt quite go as expected either....

My machine now is only half the laptop it once was pre-faffing. I can no longer complete the XP setup, as, after all the files are copied across, and you enter the stage where you set up the internet connection, quite a few odd things happen. The cursor jumps around the screen like the machine is struggling and you have to hold down the keys for at least 30 seconds each to get them to register.

I have taken it to bits again to see if I could faff with it some more, and have noticed a couple of things:

1) The mainboard appears to be now warped.

2) There is a slight burr on the heatsink where the cpu core will sit - looks like a manufacturing defect.

Dell :: M170 Gen2GPU Failure (Bin Or Upgrade)

May 25, 2008

I've just picked up a second hand XPS170 with the 6800 Go Ultra stuffed inside. Long story short - the GPU died on me yesterday.

I've tried all number of things to bring it back, including removing and reseating the card itself. Blind flashed the rom back to stock (many thanks to zzpulp for the walkthrough!) but to no avail.

Getting no display at POST at all, even though it still boots through to XP eventually.

Question is, do I fork out for a replacement 6800 Go Ultra from DELL (about £220/$430) or do I take a serious look at the upgrade route, perhaps the M1710 path?

Dell XPS 15 L501X :: RAM Upgrade - Boot Failure

Jan 8, 2013

The last few days I've been trying to replace the 2x 2gb RAM in my XPS 15 (L501X) December 2010 laptop by 2x 4gb (Corsair CMSO8GX3M2A1333C9).

This should be possible based on the processor (Intel 460M) and the chipset, but somehow it isn't. Both with Windows 7 and Windows 8 my laptop just won't boot. Both give an error just after the Windows logo appears. Replaced it with the old 2x 2gb and it boots normally.

Loaded BIOS defaults, didn't work. Erased CMOS by removing the battery, didn't work either. BIOS is updated to latest W8 version.

Also with just 1x 4gb in one slot, the problem stays the same: laptop doesn't boot. (Also tried for the other one of course to make sure the problem is not that one of them is broken.)

Acer :: 5100 Restore Failure Oxa0000002

Nov 23, 2008

Here is the story: PC started running slow, then started to get system failure BSODs.

Unplug the PC of all external drives and such, let sit for 30 minutes and it would work fine for a few days, then all would repeat.

So, I made a system restore point, and burned a system recovery DVD. I then tried to do a clean install of Vista Home Premium.

Ok, so here's the deal. It was installed onto D drive. Dont know if that was a good thing or a bad thing.

But it went through the entire install just fine, the new desk top came up, everything looked great for about a minute. Then it turned itself off and has yet to run.

I kept getting an error message 'boot failed' and tried to roll back to the restore point [no good, it reset] and the recovery would not load either. Having purchased the notebook from BestBuy I was not given any restore or system discs, so I ordered both a system restore disc and a recovery from Acer, direct. They came in the mail Thursday.

I put the system disc in, and it said it was Loading RAMDISK Image, the progress bar went all the way over and then it asked for the recovery disc.

Inserting the recovery disc, the Restore to Factory Default scrren came up, and it warned that "partitioning C drive would erase all files, etc, and did I want to continue?"

After clicking OK, it proceeded to run down to about 30% completed and then I received the following Failure to Boot, Error Oxa0000002

So then I tried the whole procedure over, and its the same. Again, and again.

So then I called Acer tech, and was told I needed the Acer ISO Image, which I downloaded, unpacked, and burned to CD [using another computer obviously] and it will not even run that CD.

Acer :: Bios Update Failure 5633Wlmi

Nov 17, 2008

I upgraded to 4 gb and the Bios was only showing 3gb/Vista 4gb.

I updated the BIOS via bootable DOS Fdd after reading things here and knowning that it was not possible via x64 Vista.

Update finished and notebook shutdown, not restart.

Now it will not turn on.

No lights with power adapter or battery.

I have tried the "crisis" disk method. holding fn+esc.

Tried power in and holding Insert.

I've tried with and with out battery/power adapter.

Opened and bridged the clear-cmos for 30 seconds.

Reseated RAM and CPU.

Tried all of this with 1gb, 2gb 3gb and 4gb.

but alas she is still in a coma.......

I have tried Acer support for help but they want it sent to them, I want to avoid this if I can.

Can a failed BIOS really kill a notebook?

Acer :: Aspire 8920G - Black Screen -> Alt+f10 Failure

Jul 27, 2009

I have an Aspire 8920G laptop.

I have Windows Vista Home Premium preinstalled (with no installation nor recovery disks delivered).

I accidently hit the arcade button on the cinedash panel, instead of the power button. The computer started directly up into arcade deluxe, after a short install. Nice feature

I thought, and choose to exit arcade through the exit feature. Then I noticed that the computer prepared to hibernate, but instead it shut off after it finished.

After turning the computer on, a small complaint about improper closing the computer popped up, and I choose to start windows normally. Now the boot loader ran, and when I expected the logon screen, instead I met a black screen with a working mouse cursor. I eventually had to force power down, since crtl alt delete didn't work.

Since then, all boot options, safe mode etc leads to the same black screen.

Vista looks like it's going to boot normally then goes to a black screen with a working mouse pointer. The hard disk light just pulses every couple seconds.

I tried extracting the battery but it doesn't work.

I tried to alt+f10 - Vista Recovery page, so it gives me menu called "Edit Boot Options". There is the path to winload.exe and this:
"Partition: 2
Hard Disk: b8f0ffa4

[ /NOEXECUTE=OPTIN
]"
That's all what I have when I press ALT + F10.

I could type "Enter" = nothing happened
"Esc" = shutdown the system
"F8" = go to recovery page.

Hit f8:

Goes to a "Vista system recovery" or something like that, i'm not quite sure what its name was. Anyway it had about 6 options, including "Get windows to check for and correct the faults on your disk" in a little bit more high tech talk. And "Restore to a earlier point". Since the "Checking and correct faults" said it was recommended, i thought i'd go for that.

It ran its tool, told me to click the restart button. Runs it again, tells me to restart again.

And now it enters its final state - Its virtually dead :|. If i turn it on, it will go to the black screen, that talks about an improper shutdown, with the options for Safe Mode, Safe mode with networking.. etc. Any of these 4 options all result in the same black screen displaying only the mouse cursor.

I was not trying to install or upgrade nothing, was not trying to change form vista to xp or so.

I have not deleted any hidden partition (as far as I know...)

HP :: Envy 15t USB Failure

Aug 7, 2014

I have a two week old HP Envy 15 laptop running Windows 8.1. Today I plugged my cell phone into the laptop to sync my music and the phone was NOT recognized as a device. Then my logitech mouse and keyboard immediately stopped working. They work via a mini usb bluetooth. I tried rebooting and that didn't fix the problem. I checked the device manager and some usb devices were showing yellow. They were

- Intel 8 Series / C220 Series USB EHCI #1 8C26- Intel 8 Series / C220 Series USB EHCI #2 8C2D- USB Root Hub (xHCI)

I rebooted into diagnostics and tested each USB port and it said the USB ports were fine. Rebooted again and still nothing was working. I followed the steps to uninstall the devices and then reboot, and nothing happened except now the bad devices are listed as "Universal Serial Bus (USB) Controller" and "Unknown Device". I've tried reinstalling the driver to no avail. The HP and Intel sites don't have a driver package for Windows 8.1 that works. The HP Intel Chipset Installation Utility does not install properly - "An unknown error occurred. Setup will exit"I checked the event logs and they had a few events about the "pointer device". "A pointer device reported a bad angular logical range", "A pointer device reported a bad angular physical range", and "A pointer device did not report a valid unit of angular measurement".At this point, the ports allow power though, but still won't connect anything plugged into them. Is this just a plain hardware failure or is there something more I can do to get this working without having to send the laptop back?

Acer :: 5570 RAM Upgrade

Feb 10, 2009

I checked with Acer and Crucial.com to determine that I could upgrade from 1GB to 4 GB , removing the two existing 512 MGs and installing two 2 GBs in their place. When both 2 GBs were installed the computer would not boot. After checking with Crucial tech
I tried with just one of the 2 GBs and then the other. Each worked fine individually.

I then downloaded the Vista Flash BIOS 1.32230 and after some help from the Acer tech people was able to install it. It did not change anything. Finally Installed one of the old 512 MGs with one of the new 2 GBs and that worked. Am now running on 2.5 Gigs which is an incredible improvement especially with the Vista OS. If anyone has been able to update to the full 4 GBs please let me know what I've missed. Incidentently, the 2 GB RAM can be ordered online from crucial.com for about $21 and installation is a snap ( about 5-10 minutes ).

Acer :: 6920G Max Upgrade, Cpu+gfx+hd

Dec 9, 2009

I have an acer 6920g which i intend to upgrade to the maximum possible starting with the cpu, after a bit of research the only contenders are the T9500 and the X9000 but im wondering if its worth it for the x9000 as i believe the bios is locked out on my acer so wouldnt be able to overclock it.

Even still it is 200mhz faster than the T9500 but am i going to notice this in the real world?

Next will be memory, apparently the chipset only supports up to pc5300 667mhz ram but will take pc6400 800mhz ram and downclock..

So to confirm, there is no gain in putting in faster ram?

Either way i will be putting in 4gb of decent low latency ram.

Now for a tricky 1, graphics......

I currently have an ati hd3650 512mb card that resides in an mxm2 slot which when i bought the laptop was the best gfx card i could find in it but no i want to put a 9600gt in to compliment the rest of the upgraded system (as i do play the odd game!) but have not found anything confirming if they work fully, i have found a card on ebay that has an acer bios and is ddr3, i'm assuming that with an acer bios it should work?

Also i will be putting in a large but fast hard drive such as this
