Aspire AS7720-6604: original hard drive (p/n WD3200BEVT) 320 GB crashed and need to replace. Is it alright to replace it with p/n WD5000BEVT 500 GB hard drive. I want to get it but want to make sure its compatible for my laptop.
View 9 RepliesI have an Aspire 4720z that had a hard drive failure. I replaced the hard drive with a new Seagate and went to the Acer support pages. Since I was foolish and never followed the process to use the e portion to create recovery disks, I had to purchase the recovery disks from the Acer website. When I start the system disk, it goes through picking the language etc. and then tells me to insert the first recovery disk. I do this and it pops up a warning about making sure you do not have any external drives......make sure you want to do this as this will reformat the C:......etc. At this point I click next to go on and it pops up a Recovery32 Type Mismatch error and won't go any further to recover my system. Based on all the reading that I have been doing on this it would seem that there may be some HDD formatting issues that I need to resolve, but I am at a loss.

I recently purchased a new 5920G laptop and have been delighted with my purchase.
After becoming familiar with the 5920G's basic functions, I am trying to become more adventurous and I am thinking of burning some DVDs.
However, I am confused because the machine came with what appears (to my computer-illiterate eye) to be 3 sets of software to do the same functions - Acer Arcade Deluxe, Cyberlink Power Producer and NTI CD and DVD Maker.
Can someone more knowledgeable please tell me whether all these 3 programs are the same and ,if not, what the differences are?
Also which one would be best for a beginner like me to use for burning DVDs ?

I am using an acer aspire e11 with Windows 8.1. The computer is used for home use and is not joined to a domain. I recentlly reset the device to factor default using Acer's Recovery Management utility. When the recovery was complete, I downloaded and installed all the applicable windows updates. I have one user account that is an administrative account and everything works just fine. I created a second user account as a standard user. When I sign in as this standard user, I get an error message that states: "The Group Policy Client service failed the sign-in. The universal unique identifier (UUID) type is not supported."

When typing in wordpad , notepad and more, why not work Ctrl + D?
But the others shortcut is working , like Ctrl + V and Ctrl + C.
Lately I have been having problems with the touchpad this week, started with freezing sometimes, which I typed in google to see another have this problem and to switch setting of touchpad to no delays, which worked as freezing hasn't happened at all anymore at the moment....and later in week, having some difficulty when typing when I click to type in a certain place but then the blinker moves elsewhere, problems with copying and pasting sometimes, as when I copy to highlight upwards, the page did not come up immediately when I slowly moved the mouse up as you do, but when it finally went up, it highlighted the entire document. Doesn't happen all the time....
View 9 Replies View RelatedI've been trying to follow various vague guides on how to replace Acer screens. The closest guide on this forum is for the 6930 but the layout is quite different once you open them up. I have so far removed the speaker cover and detached the screen from the main laptop. I have also un-popped the screen bezel but am now stuck. The proplem is that as far as I can see, I need to get the whole bezel off in order to accesss the LCD fittings but I can't because it's catching on the hinges (and the small circuit board for the AC in socket) which protude from the screen. How do you remove the bezel? It looks like it should slide up away from the hinges but mine is getting caught everytime. What have I missed?

Replacing/upgrading the CPU on an 8930 is not so difficult. With care, a small cross head and flat head screwdriver and some thermal grease the following procedure can be carried out in less than 20 minutes. The description here is for information only; if you choose to try it out bear in mind that things can still go wrong and you do it at your own risk.
The linked photos show my upgrade of a T6400 to a P8600.
A list of CPU benchmarks at NOTEBOOKCHECK shows the relative merits of these two (and other) CPUs. Whilst the P8600 is not cutting edge technology it is significantly better (in my mind) than the T6400. In addition (BIOS permitting) the P8600 also supports VT, hacking the BIOS is my next step; I have not covered it here as I have not done it yet and anyway others have already covered potential approaches Add to that the fact that I got a good deal on eBay (under 70 GBP) and you can see why I chose the P8600 above possible replacements. Most of my use is development and design so I do not need to be at the expensive cutting edge, but superior performance and hopefully virtualization are key for me. One interesting difference in the choice of CPU is that the FSB should increase from 800 to 1066MHz.So on to the CPU swap out...
First shutdown the notebook and disconnect the mains power adapter. Turn the notebook over so the base faces upwards with the screen hinge nearest.
Unlatch and remove the battery (1). Unscrew the 7 screws holding the access panel in place. If you are careful the screws can remain in their locations as the panel is removed to avoid needing to record where they each came from.
Carefully release the panel by lifting the edges gently releasing the internal clips, start at the recess (3) and work round both sides to the side opposite the recess. The side opposite the recess has lugs not clips and so this edge should be slid out when the others sides are all unclipped (like opening a door with the recess at (3) representing the handle and the opposite side the hinges).
Once released the panel comes away easily and completely, most force is required releasing the first few clips but this need not be excessive and can be helped with a well placed thumb nail.
From now on static discharge is an issue, make sure you are careful to avoid damaging your laptop. Tweezers may be useful as the screws are small, avoid dropping them as they could find there way further inside and become difficult to rescue............

I believe it is MXM2 and as such can be replaced.
The current card is the nvidia 8600m-gs and I'm very much afraid it isn't going to last very long, i bought this machine to play games (COD4, Bioshockand such), since the 8600 is included in the bad cards list you can see my dilemma.

View 10 Replies View RelatedI recently received an Acer 3680. Upon bootup, it gives a SMART error for the HDD, warning of imminent failure and a need to back up all files. According to the previous owner, it has been doing this for months. I want to repace the HDD, but have some concerns about the service / recovery partition. I recently made some back-up CD's and reinstalled Windows Vista Home Basic. This was done to wipe out the previous owner's data, plus see if the backup dics really would work. The CD's I made are the only discs I have for it.
If I buy a new hard disk drive (larger and a different model than the current one), will I be able to create a service partition on it, with whatever information is supposed to be on the service partition?
Will the backup CD's I made from the eRecovery software be able to install the OS onto a new hard drive, or will they only work with that exact model drive?
Basically, I am preferring a new HDD that will be partitioned and have the data just like the current one, but larger, with no SMART errors. Is this possible?
