I'm considering this upgrade, but I only have vanilla install disks.
Are there issues running a non-Dell OS on an XPS M1330? I seem to recall reading something about this here, but cannot find the related thread(s).
I understand about having to find all the drivers (I have read much of the Vista 64 upgrade thread by Trebuin [thx, T - brilliant work!]), but don't want to go through the pain if a vanilla OS disk won't 'cut it'.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have an Aspire 9301awsmi with 1GB Ram running Vista HP. Been wondering whether it's worthwhile upping the RAM to 2gb.
1. Have used "Crucial" to see what they recommend. Would an upgrade work straight off and be recognised correctly or are any BIOS changes needed. Never entered the BIOS yet!
2. What sort of gains could I reasonably expect. The biggest slowdown I have is with FSecure and certain webpages ( Forums etc ) where the system can freeze now and then.
Would more RAM help here. Resource monitor shows FSecure as the culprit hogging the HDD. Start up from cold for the desktop to fully appear is around 3+ minutes with a further 3 or 4 minutes of pretty hard HDD thrashing when things are a bit unresponsive.
my Acer TM8204. i just installed vista 3 weeks ago,but until now,i still cant figure out,why i cant turn on my bluetooth. it always give me "no device" everytime i try switch it on.
View 6 Replies View RelatedHas anyone done this on an Acer laptop? I recently bought a 5515 for my parents and after seeing all the bloatware that came on it I figured I'd do a clean OS install. I backed up the CD Key using the ABR utility and backed up all the drivers. I then started the new OS install and get all the way to "completing installation" and it sits there spinning for a good 20-30 mins before it freezes. I tried the 32 bit version first followed by the 64 bit and had no luck either try. I eventually reinstalled the factory settings using the recovery disc.
View 8 Replies View RelatedFirstly I apologize if this has been asked earlier, but I couldn't find an answer to my question. I have a 1530 on order. The OS will be Vista Premium x86. There are 2 things I need to do-
1. Upgrade the HD from a 5400 to a 7200, I have the HD.
2. Install Windows Vista Business - I have an original retail version, and I absolutely need this.
I have the Vista Business Retail DVD. What I want to do is have Windows and the dell partitions configured exactly as they came with the original computer, only with Vista Business, and on the new hard disk. I don't want to alter Media Direct, or delete the restoration partition. Everything should be the same except the Windows Versio
With all the hand wringing folks have been doing about the lack of drivers for a clean install of Win7 I thought I'd jump in to the deep end of the pool with my FZ190 and investigate an alternative. My good friends Rajesh and Dr. Pratik have done clean installs of Win7 on FZ models, but I decided to take a different approach... the "dreaded" OS in place upgrade. Partly out of curiosity, I wanted to see if it would work, but mainly because I have a ton of software that would need to be reinstalled, if I did a clean install. That would mean days or weeks of inventorying every thing I have installed, digging up installation media and then installing all the stuff. I just don't have the spare time. So...
This past weekend I imaged my C: drive (all my data and I mean ALL my data is on D:, I am a fanatic about that). MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A BACKUP OF YOUR C: DRIVE BEFORE YOU TRY AN UPGRADE! I ran the Windows 7 Update adviser and it said I had some issues:

How would we go about upgrading the Vista OS to 64 bit? Apparently had no choice of ordering 64 bit when I took advantage of the free vista upgrade from xp professional.
Now I want the 64 bit instead of the 32 bit, but I have the 32 bit CD. Anyway to obtain the 64 Bit CD and use the 32 Bit serial I received with the Vista upgrade CD?
Background:
A few days ago i bought an Acer 7730 laptop with Windows Vista pre-installed and no disks. After initial hesitation i have decided to keep vista and not downgrade to XP. After all there will be more service packs and tweaking should speed it up lots anyway.
However, i really want to get rid of the three partitions on the hard drive. There is only one physical hard drive but there are three partitions; a hidden 10GB one (EISA configuration) which from what i have gathered is now obsolete, a C: partition 111.44GB and a D: partition 111.44GB. There is no need to split a drive into several partitions now that we have the NTFS file system (unless you are using multiple operating systems of course - but i am not) so this is really annoying me.
I have made the 2 recovery DVD and the 1 applications/drivers DVD. I have an old WinXP disk that i can use to format the laptop if required.
Question:
Using the recovery disks (which i'm assuming contain a copy of my bought OEM Vista that was pre-installed on the laptop), can i delete the partitions, format the hard drive and install Vista onto a single c: partition?
I've done this exact process before with WinXP hundreds of times but i'm not sure whether i can do the same for Vista with just the 3 DVD mentioned...
I just got a nicely loaded E6500 from the Dell Outlet. It has XP installed but came with a Vista Business licence and I am just not sure whether to or if vista is an "upgrade" or not. I've read a bunch of reviews comparing the two systems but they were all done on Vista's release and did not account for the SP1 and other fixes, those reviews seemed to give Vista a slight edge but by no means was it overwhelming. So I was wondering what peoples opinion of Vista was now that its been on the market for a while and has had some fixes applied.
Brief specs on the laptop:
2.5ghz, 3m L2C, 1066FSB
2gb ram (1 dimm) have a second 2gb dimm on order.
250gb 7200rpm HD
Nvidia Quadro 256mb vid card.
my usage:
I am not a gamer. I do some limited video, Photoshop and audio arranging. For the most part it will be a general usage computer mainly using MS Office apps, web apps and multimedia playback.
I have a valid license for Vista Ultimate 64bit. If I order a Z series with Vista Home 64 (cheapest option), will I have any problems updating it with my Ultimate 64?
In particular.. will I have all the necessary disks to install any Sony software that would normally come with the laptop? (stuff particular to the laptop.. like making everything work.. I don't care about 3rd party junk software like antivirus, works, etc).
I've place my order with HP for the Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit upgrade, but I was wondering if I can perform the upgrade from Vista Ultimate SP1?
As an aside, I've completely given up on trying to install SP2 - it has never shown up in WU. When I first got my HDX18, I performed all necessary updates expecting that eventually SP2 would be an option. After many struggles with the Readiness app, installing and uninstalling various updates that may or may not be in conflict with SP2, seeking advice from HP tech support and forums then finally restoring the system to factory state and directly downloading SP2 and attempting an installation that way,
I have vista ultimate 32 bit on my XPS M1730. I'm trying to upgrade to Windows 7 Pro 64 bit.
The cd will not run from the operating system so I tried to restart and boot from cd (I'm doing this part right for sure).
The laptop will just stay for about 40 sec trying to boot from dvd and then goes to windows vista
I am planing on getting this machine for my home office use. Couple of questions about RAM upgrade.
1. It comes with 2G RAM 1x2048MB stick; I wan to get this up to 4G; Has Vista-32 preinstalled. Will I be able to USE all 4G or less than that (I know Vista reports all 4G as installed), but does it it really use all 4G. Specs say max RAM is 4G. Is it worth getting this upgrade now, or
2. Should I just get the upgrade and when Windows 7 comes out, will it be able to USE the full 4G, even if 32-bit

I have an Upgrade dvd Vista business to Win 7 that I received for my z790. Finally got around to install Win 7 and seems like I will need to install Vista first to be able to use the upgrade DVD. Any workaround?
My secondary objective is to install new SSD.The way I see it now:
1. Ghost XP on SSD
2. Install Vista on SSD
3. Install Win 7 on SSD
Is there an easier way to do it? Any more pitfalls to avaoid? Thanks!

View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm just looking for information / opinions on how to get the best deal for an upgrade to Windows 7 Ultimate.
I purchased my Dell Latitude E6500 direct from Dell USA Small Business on 2008-11-04, and shipped on 2008-11-21. It was pre-installed with Windows Vista Ultimate.
I've seen that systems purchased more recently (~June or July) qualify for a free upgrade from Vista to 7. I'm guessing there is nothing to qualify me for such a free upgrade, but considering that I haven't even had this system for a year yet, should there be any other upgrade discounts or specials available - either through Dell, directly from Microsoft, etc.?
Especially with the scores of users who claim that Windows 7 is really just another service pack to Vista, and with Apple offering their latest OS upgrade for a mere $29, I would certainly hope I'm not looking to pay the $219.99 as listed at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/buy/default.aspx - the same price as if I had never purchased Vista and upgraded a 7-year-old XP installation instead.
how to use this SQL Server. No tools to create/modify table.
I think it is better to install SQL Server Management Studio 2005. But I cannot install it.
Not sure which version of SSMS is suitable for the Pre loaded SQL server.
I am trying to set up this system. Which drivers shall I use? Anybody tried Microsoft server 2008 in their sony vaio AW? Is there some obsticle so it will not work?
View 4 Replies View RelatedWe have a server and 10 iMac workstations.
My concern is twofold
1. because these tapes are proprietary, if the drive goes down, the tape can't be read by any other machine. I had this happen a couple of years ago when the tape drive broke and because it was discontinued, I have all 5 daily tapes that could no longer be read and cost almost $100 each. Luckily I have never had to restore from a tape, but if I did, I would have been out of luck.
2. The cost. These drives are expensive. Would it not make more sense to have a couple of 16gig USB flash drives to rotate through. They are more portable and I can do a restore on any networked machine.
Or we can simply do a backup to a networked drive. I like the flash drive better than the last option because it can be moved to a safe part of the office to protect against a water pipe burst or something like that. the total data requiring backup is just under 1 gig
Would the drivers for Vista 64bit work?
