Apple :: Does OSX Have Any Built In Scanning Tools - Like Vista With Windows Fax And Scan
Feb 15, 2009
On Vista, if I want to scan something I simply go to Windows Fax & Scan, and literally press select the scan i want and press scan.
Can OSX Leopard do this? Cheers
Today's the day I was planning to go to Apple.com and buy a new Macbook pro, and i'm having a few small worries. The cost, the fact that it's my first Mac ever, what if I hate it despite enjoying it when I went to the store to check one out for real etc....
Currently I have 2 PC's, a quadcore desktop for recording with Pro Tools, and a 13.3' Asus laptop for school. After seeing a friend use Logic Pro 8, I think I want to make the switch, but I have a couple questions:
1. With Pro Tools, you are required to have 2 hard drives, is that necessary with Logic Pro 8?
2. Will Logic Pro record fine with a 5400rpm HD, or do I need to upgrade to 7200rpm? (I only record a couple tracks at a time)
3. I think Logic Pro 8 would run fine on a normal macbook, but it seems like there is no firewire port? So do I have to spend the extra $700 to get a MBP for a firewire port?
4. Any MBP models I should avoid? I've never even looked into buying a mac before, so this is all new to me...ohh and yes I need a laptop and not a imac cause it needs to be portable since I will probably be selling both PC's...
what tools can we use for benchmarking Apple/mac systems?
So far OpenMark is pretty much dead. I use XBench at the moment, but the result presentation is very much in text mode. Would be nice if we have something like Passmark Performance test tool of Windows.
i've installed kubuntu and when i click install parallels tools from the menu, the cd rom drive gets mounted but i cannot double click on the installer. i googled and i saw that i should go in terminal and type cd/media/cdrom. that didnt work as it said cannot locate folder or directory?
I'm sure I have a virus that won't let me do a full scan on Windows Defender (only quick). It won't list ACER's eRecovery option. How may I do a factory reset? This is an ACER Aspire 5742-7653.
For those that use Windows on your Mac's, which version do you recommend? I'm thinking, what's best for battery life, performance etc..
I have a copy of Windows XP Pro SP3 and Windows Vista Ultimate SP2. I'm tempted to go with XP for simplicity, and the fact that it has equal compatibility and a shed load less intrusive DRM.
I'm planning on install Parallels. I'm confused as whether to use XP or Vista. Would it be easier to install XP onto Mac? Vista looks different, and I don't mind using something different. If Vista will cause problems, I would rather use XP.
Also, is Parallels a popular choice? How is Bootcamp? VM Ware?
I've always been a Mac fan and am quite impressed with today's update. I recently purchased 2 new 13" Macbook's a few months ago for my mother and myself. The only complaint we both have is the horrible 2.3-3 hour battery life, instead of selling our lovely investments do you think we can pay to have the new built-in battery placed into the system or should we sell and repurchase? I understand the new systems have quite a few new hardware updates but that's all irrelevant, we just want that new sleek battery life!
We also want the new iPhone 3GS. Grr Apple, you always know how to do it right.
I just have one more question before I pull the trigger. Originally, I was looking to buy a new computer whether it was a laptop or a desktop. At first, my eyes were on a Vaio Z (P8700, 4 gigs, etc.....), Macbook Pro...etc...
The reason that got me to change to desktop is its performance numbers on paper. I already have a laptop so the new computer can either be desktop or laptop. In all seriousness, how much of a "day-to-day" performance boost will I notice by going with the desktop? (a noticeable enough performance to make me say..."wow it was really worth it to go with a desktop"? Day to day activities include opening many many windows including browsers, word/powerpoint, msn, movies, etc. Some more demanding applications will include photoshop/lightroom and some games.
By talking to a lot of people on forums, they keep on saying that for day to day operations, I won't notice any difference (I want the most smoothest experience, opening/alternating windows...which I am not getting with my laptop at the moment). Even for these small day to day applications, will I notice a difference in this desktop against one of the latest laptops? Honestly, gaming is important but not the deciding factor here.
I was also thinking of getting a premium laptop and then buying a Samsung HD240 as an external monitor but people said it will put great stress on my laptop (overheating issues...)
my main consideration is the Dell XPS16 because of its beautiful screen. I did not even CONSIDER a MBP because I have been a PC user forever and even at school, I hate using the MAC because of its OS; I need me my windows!
But I heard I can run Windows on a Mac; the best of both worlds!
It seems too good to be true. Can I use a Mac just as if it was 100% a PC? Is it easy to do? How does it work?
After an install of XP & windows 7 and use of a silly program to ramp the fans up; I've actually found that Vista is the best one for the job and actually ramps the fans up automatically, which means I can play games!
Finally then, it solves my problem, as partly why I got the macbook was to run windows, but was gutted when even if it was doing nothing, the heat coming off of it was really hot to touch.
I have an "incredible" issue with one of my USB key, a 4gb Sony. if I plug it directly to the mac (in either the 2 ports), it won't be recognized, but if I plug it in the USB hub attached to one of the 2 ports, it appears on the screen one problem, if I'm out, no hub ...
The USB key appears on windows vista and 7 as well.
I tried to format it, but no way.
And ho yes, actually couple of weeks ago, it worked perfectly fine.
what the battery life of the new(er) unibody macbook pro 17 was like under windows. I read a review somewhere that says the new macbook pro (the one with advertised 8hours battery life) managed about 1 1/2 hours in windows, is this true? the only reason I'm looking at the 17inch pro is because I program a lot in Windows and Linux, and 17inchs would be fantastic to display more code, but I still need good battery life. portability is no issue, as I'm a big guy and I carry 2 computers with me right now anyway. any other cons to installing windows on this beast?
I have a Dell XPS PP09L laptop and Windows XP needs a driver for the built-in network controller and when I do a search for it on the dell website nothing comes up. I even googled it and the links that came up led me to a no results page on Dell. What is the model of the network controller that's in this model and where I can get a driver for it?
Using my inspiron 2330 (only 18mths old ) as normal next thing it tells me it encountered fault and has to reboot anyway it keeps saying scanning and repairing drive (c) then does not allow me to log in so i manage to get into bios to do a scan and it guves me a error code of 2000-0142 validation code of 112406 and and then says harddrive 0-s/n wd-wmc152946178
When i finally manage to log in my desk top screen is flashing and keeps telling my hard drive fault ....
Was toying with the idea of getting a 15" MacBook Pro, but as OneNote is a major application with me, dual-booting with Windows 7 like I'm running now, or using Parallels, is required.
What kind of battery life are you guys getting with Parallels / Fusion (or running Windows natively via Boot Camp)?
I have a new XPS 15 laptop and the card reader is not recognizing the pictures on the card. I did get it to read it last night but today it will not read.
i set up this thread to compare the temps between windows 7 and windows vista. i googled for it but there's no comparison chart. please feel free to contribute.
windows vista:
idle: 62-65 under load: 77-85
windows 7:
idle: 55-60 under load: 70-80
i see that windows 7 runs noticeably cooler than windows vista. Please post your details so that other users can have an idea about what to choose if they decide to bootcamp windows.
i bought yesterday hp pavilion 15 p012st laptop then load windows7 but i cant scan wireless internet i can only connect to internet by line. i instilled this drivers : [URL]

Any one know of tools to track down what is consuming space on a hard drive partition?
I am trying to provide remote support for my mother-in-law's Inspiron 8200. Last summer I put in a new HDD and maxed the RAM to get a couple more years out of it. I partitioned the drive into 10GB and 70GB. I installed Win XP home + all service packs and updates, prgrams etc. on C:.
I moved "My Documents" to the second partition, the drive letter ended up as E: for the second partition (optical drive is D. She only has about 3 GB of data so there should not be any issues.
She recently called saying that attempting to install TurboTax resulted in an insufficient disk space error. When I had her look into it, C: is almost full, 9.5GB used. This seems unreasonable to me. I have a couple of other laptops configured similarly and the OS and programs only take about 6.5GB. This lady is not one to install lots of stuff.
My daughter is there visiting so I had her read me the space taken by each folder in the C: partition. Adding up the numbers it seems that there is at least a couple of gig unaccounted for. Do I have to actually go into every folder to find any space hogs? Nothing I heard so far seems unreasonably large.
I am suspecting some kind of bug or spyware is creating a file that is consuming the space on C:. I had a problem with Zone Alarm 9 creating a ridiculous log file on one of my boxes but she is not running ZA.
E: has plenty of space only the 3GB of data in My Docs.
I am trying to replace my laptop fan in a Sony Vaio VGN-S270. I removed all the necessary screws and plugs to get to the fan, but there are three screws connecting the fan which I'm not sure how to remove. Two of them are located on the lower left of the fan and are gold in color. They appear to be spring-loaded and have a threaded center to the screw. This seems to be an extension of the fan itself and covers one of the chips.
The other screw is very small and is located up and to the left of the actual fan portion. This screw looks to have a circular head to it, but its so small I can't really tell what type of tool to use for it.
Just got me an Aspire 5536G (2.2 ghz Turion, ATI 4570) and it is running hot! After a few minutes of Prime95 the CPU gets up in the 90s (Celcius), and 15-20 minutes of gaming gets it there too.
Is there a tool that lets me undervolt and lower clocks? The BIOS is very anemic, so I cant set things there.
I am also looking for a good fan speed and temp monitoring program. I have tried a few but only CPUID HWMonitor reports temps for both cores and two more sensors (presumably located near the GPU). SpeedFan only reports one temperatur.
Last couple days, I have been getting the error msg: " HP TOOLS Drive E: running out of space... " then something about pls CLICK here to find out the free up some space... I click and the only thing listed is the RECYCLE BIN which is empty...
