Apple :: My Experience - MacBook
Jun 6, 2009So here goes...
1. My Microsoft Intellitype Pro keyboard has better options than it did for my XP machine. I mean, When I pressed the mail hotkey my keyboard had it would open some bizarre mail client, one that I never configured. I wasn't even able to change what the hot key did! Now it's a completely different story in OS X. I can use the default mail client, which I'm using, but if I wasn't, I could use it to do a completely other task. Fantastic! I mean, my keyboard has a bunch of hotkeys which I never used, simply because they did what I didn't want them to do, but now I'm using them so much more because they actually can do what I want! I love it!
2. My Logitech VX Revo has more settings too! I can eject the damned CD, zoom, take a screen shot, use expose, search in finder, etc etc all on my mouse! I'm blow away.
I'm not going to make this list tiring to read, but I think that OS X is really, really impressive. I wasn't expecting much when I plugged in my Microsoft keyboard to the USB slots but I was totally wrong. I mean, for God's sake, the calculator/log off/sleep buttons work on the keyboard.
Apple :: OS X 10.6 Experience On 64GB SSD
Oct 28, 2009I have an older Samsung SLC RBX series 64GB SSD lying around. This was one of the very first generation SSDs to come out on the market. I was interested in installing this in my early 2009 15" MBP, and I wanted to ask how the experience of a limited hard drive (i.e. only 64GB) will be in Mac OS X. I am currently on a 500GB WD Scorpio Blue, and have about 50% used with various documents, music, etc. Obviously, I realize that I won't have the same functionality with a more limited hard drive. However, the speed improvement I think will be far worth the decrease in capacity, and I was hoping that someone with experience running Mac OS X on lower capacities drive could chime and let me know of some of the pros and cons.

Nov 3, 2009I decided to upgrade my Vista/Fusion installation to Windows 7/Fusion today on my Alu unibody Mac.
The experience took a couple of hours, and I have to say it was a nervous operation.
A few heads up for those making the trek....
The setup program would not run until I uninstalled McAfee completely. Just disabling does not do the trick.
The mouse button stopped working several times at key junctures, when it is asking for input. Pressing the escape key after bringing up the VMware menu bar seems to alleviate the problem.
I could not re-install McAfee after the installation from the VMware menu bar. I'll have to see if I can do it later from the Fusion install disk.
After installation, Windows 7 seems to to function OK, but I did not do any in-depth testing as I'll want to have a working antivirus before I proceed further. If I can't get McAfee back on, maybe I'll install AVG's free AV.
Apple :: Low Graphic Score From Windows 7 Experience
Aug 27, 2009running windows 7 via bootcamp on my MBP.
The graphic score from windows experience is very low (1.0). Other scores are normal.
Is there a driver that I can download to fix this graphic issue?

Apr 22, 2010I'm curious what the relative strength of this laptop is in terms of gaming? I'm a really casual gamer; I currently play DotA and Dofus, I know the MBP will handle these, but how about WoW, Heroes of newearth and, most importantly, SC2? Any ideas? I'm assuming it will handle most of these OK, but I think the graphics will limit its performance in SC2, the 320 isn't a gaming graphics card, and is painfully truncated with 256mb... any one with a MBP 13 and the SC2 beta around to comment on this?

Mar 3, 2009I just tried bootcamp and installed the latest nvidia mobile drivers for my Macbook alu. When I tried playing UT3 (which runs pretty ok to my surprise) within minutes the Macbook got very hot (especially around the area where power is plugged in). Is this normal? Fan started blowing pretty hard within minutes too.

I am not talking about crisis or anything like that on them... but maybe Team Fortress 2, Warcraft 3, and a little WoW. Jun 30, 2009I'm looking @ getting a new 15" Macbook Pro /w 3.06 Core 2 Duo processor, 4 GB RAM, and 320 GB @ 7200 RPM. I am planning on getting it as a desktop replacement and will use it for gaming and office work. I know it's going to be perfect for the latter, but am curious as to how it will hold up for the former. The Mac gaming videos I've seen online are very promising and they are the older model. How realistic would it be for me to play games using a windows OS? Also, I am better off getting XP, Vista, or Windows 7?

Feb 25, 2009I just recieved my refurbished 17" Macbook pro yesterday and love it. It looks just like new to me and is built like a tank. I have more of an observation than a question, that i would like to say.
I have been reading posts on this board as well as others about heat related issues when playing GPU intensive games like COD and WOW. I am a MAC newbie coming from Windows based laptops that i have used for years. The last windows laptop I used for several months and gave to my youngest son was a Gateway FX-7811 which is a gaming laptop. It has a 9800 GT 512MEG card and builds up heat fast. What I am trying to say is I would never ever ever use a laptop for gaming WITHOUT using a laptop cooler first. your laptop needs the ventilation and airflow to cool it . I am amazed how many post I have read where users are apparently using their laptop without one.

Apple :: MBP Freezing Within Minutes When Gaming
Mar 6, 2009First my Macbook DVD drive was broken, sent back to store and decided to upgrade to a Macbook Pro while this was possible. This MBP now seems to be having problems with the videocard: when I play a game, within minutes the laptop starts revving up the fans to the highest speed (might be normal?) and a few minutes after that, the game/laptop just freezes. This is with Hallife2, Left4Dead and others.
I'm losing ALL confidence in Apple. Is it normal for the fans to start blowing that quickly after starting a game? And is there a know issue with MBP's locking up after a few minutes (due to overheating?)

I am getting a gaming laptop seperate, this would be as a backup or if I am without gaming laptop (leave it at home, etc).
Apple :: Getting The Most Gaming Performance Out Of My Macbook Pro
Apr 2, 2009I am pretty much deciding between keeping my macbook pro (in sig) and upgrading to an imac 24" with the ati 4850. With student discount it would cost me 1879 + tax. I just dont know if its worth it for me. Most all the pc games i own can be maxed on the pro,Save for world in conflict, crysis, and some others (about 5). My 360 gets most of my gaming time anyway. I just am thinking that it would be great to have the extra power in the 4850 for some of my current titles and having power for future titles would be nice. Also who couldnt use more speed for final cut express and such.
One game that annoys me on my macbook pro is Unreal 3. It is an amazingly graphical game. The new patch enables comprehesive settings adjustment. The thing that bothers me is that I can max it but fps drops by 65% on the water level. I want a card that wont have problems like this. Im not expecting wonders with the 4850, i would still use the modpacks for crysis, and run WiC in DX9.
However am i just missusing the macbook pro? What windows operating system runs smoothest on it? I have tried xp 32 bit and noticed some glitches with the led keyboard and such. Would 64 bit be the better option? Would upgrading the ram help at all? Im pretty convinced it wouldnt because as for vram i got double the ram compared to most people with the macbook pro, and still notice about the exact same performace. Also drivers? I never even touched or looked at the drivers? How do install drivers on a mac? Do i just go to nvidia's site on windows? If i erase the bootcamp partiiton will it delete the drivers? Will it conflict with leopard?

Normally I just game under boot camp, but apparently this program allows you to game at full speed under OS X. Any truth to this? What kind of performance would I be looking at with a 9600M GT?

Bootcamp isn't very stable as the Macbook Pro starts to overheat a lot.

Jun 10, 2009I just want to know if games (world of warcraft mainly) look good in 1680 by 1050 resolution, and not fuzzy or distorted.
My current laptop is a vostro 1700 with a 1440 by 900 resolution and if i use any resolution below that resolution, games dont look too sharp.

I really don't want to do boot camp, if at all possible, but do want decent gaming performance. I will be using Fusion for all of my work-related VM's but my main Windows 7 VM will be under Paralells Desktop.
Will I get comparable gaming performance with Paralells or should I stick with boot camp?

Anyway, how does the 9400m compare to the 9300ms that is in the Asus N10J?
I already have a Clevo laptop for gaming, this would strictly be for ultaportability and perhaps some gaming while on the road for clients.

I was on the phone with Dell EPP and configured my setup for a fully loaded SXPS 1340 after about 2 hours of back and forth with the representative and manager (I am a bargain hunter). Oct 13, 2008To date, I have had X4 Motherboard replacements, X2 Screen replacements and X2 batteries, and I'm fed up with Dell. My computer is running all latest drivers and software etc, but is running really hot. The palmrest gets really hot, even if the CPU is idle. I have to retract my hand from the computer base after a few seconds because it is so **** warm. I'm not sure what is causing the heat - it was never this warm before the latest motherboard replacement, which was due to a fried GPU.
Is it really worth getting a new motherboard and going through all that hassle, if it will just happen again? My graphics in Flight Simulator and all games have become terrible (i mean, terrible) - with few other processes running, since I bought it a year ago. This is a concern that I can no longer play games on this Nvidia Chip.
Do you guys think I am right in thinking that my GPU is just messed up and chucking out crazy amounts of heat? (It is 65 degrees celcius idle)

IT IS SIMPLY AWSOME!!!!
the new looks, the really snappy and smooth interface, the new features, and the fast as hell startup time... WOW!
i was going to add some pictures but my connection is acting up again and i cant seem to upload anything so il just write some outstanding features:
1- the speed, its just so much faster than vista.... as simple as that, and it uses 630 megs of ram when i actually have 4gigs on this comp, while vista used 1.2 gigs, and as i said, the startup time is amazing .....

May 11, 2008With my 1730 I can get a 5.1 score. The 5.1 is because of my ram which gets a 5.1, I am upgrading and adding another 2gb so this will not be a bottleneck anymore. My next highest score is a 5.2 for my hd. Is there anyway to get a higher score for my hd? I have a 7200rpm, would adding another hd, and putting them in raid somehow make a difference? I would at least like to figure out how i could make the hd faster, after that my next lowest score is not until 5.4, and if i had a score of 5.4

Feb 8, 2010Well, I think it's more usual for people to leave comments over bad experiences than good experiences, so I think it would be good to do it.
Few days ago I had a problem with a XPS 1330 which suddenly stopped working. Something related with a shortcircuit with the power supply.
I checked guarantee and happily found that I bought the 3 year extended guarantee with the laptop and it was on the third year so i called customer support and after some small checks they decided it had to do with the motherboard so they ordered a replacement for me for the next day.
I even messed with the asking to come later as I wanted to backup data (just for security). Did the backup and called them again few days later. Again I had no problem, next day a technician came to my home and changed the motherboard. In matter of minutes i had the laptop working again.
