I was having bad battery life (under 2 hours) And noticed my fans were not spinning up to counter the increase in heat.
I called Apple and they had me reset my PRAM. With that done the system worked fine for a day.
Currently my Unibody will not stay connected to any wireless networks. I have tried 2 of my own routers and a friends. It will not stya connected, either on AC or battery.
Next issue involves CPU hitting 95c before the fan go past 2k rpm. Try and and play wow and the system locks up when the CPU hits 98c and the fans are still at 2k. Tried reseting the PRAM again, no luck.
I was using I8KFanGui for a long long time to control the fans and it was doing a fine job. But it sort of stopped working after I installed Windows 7 RC2 as it can only force both the fans to run at high speed.
The manual option to run the fans at low speed at all times and automatic settings don't work anymore.
I tried speedfan too but the option to turn on Dell settings is not working either. The fans turn on only after the CPU goes above 65C or so.
So, wondering if anyone else using Win7 on this laptop and able to control the fans. BTW, there are absolutely no other problems and it runs smoother than the XP days .....

and other posts with people having overheating problems with their XPS's. I blew some canned air in through the vents to clear it and it helped a lot, but i still had a tech comeout to take it apart and they put new fans and a heat sink in. I want to check their speed and make sure they're working right before i stress the system, theyre much more quiet t han t he old ones i cant really tell if theyre working right
i tried both speedfan and rivatuner, neither one shows any data on fan speed or anything.
what am i doing wrong, is there some setting im missing? i checked a bunch of the plugins w ith rivatuner but didn't see anything, and speedfan shows nothing at all. how can i check their speed?
I love the laptop but I was just wondering if the fan is supposed to kick in, slow down, kick in, slow down all the time.
It's not loud but I just find it weird since all I'm doing is Word processing. I tried Speed Fan but it refuses to open and freezes up the computer
I have installed Xp in bootcamp and installed the driver , everything worked fine, but the area above the keyboard gets quite hot.
So i downloaded "Lubbo's MacBook Pro Fan Control" but when i extract the zip and click on the LubbosFanControl.exe i get an error in profile , how do i install , what am i doing wrong.
know for those Gaming it would be a great help. [url]

View 9 Replies View Related1.I really didn't find much info on the (now not so) new white unibody Macbooks, expect some items for sale. And please, don't tell me that just buy the aluminum model for the extra $200, my question is strictly from an engineering point of view: heat. We all know aluminum Macbooks are quite hot, right? But how does the white unibody compares to the aluminum regarding heat issues?
2.What might be the reason that the whole bottom of the white unibody contcts the table beneath it, compared to the aluminum model, which has four rubber contact points on the four corners?
3.On the other thread I read a dedicated graphics card does not really add to battery consumption. Can you confirm that?
My main usage profile is office, web and seeing (HD, if available) Youtube videos. This one is rather a 15" vs. 13" Pro question, and half hypothetic. Let's say, all things are being equal on two models, the processor none the least, the only differences are one model has the integrated Nvidia, the other the integrated Intel plus discreet Nvidia combo, which one would serve me better, regarding performance and battery life? The discreet graphics would at least turn on when playing the HD videos?
4.Running native Windows (7 or XP) still suck on Macbooks, because of the drivers?
I have two laptops. One is a macbook and the other is a Toshiba that has Vista. The Toshiba works pretty well, but I want to be able to back it up like I can with the mac and time machine.
Is there any Windows software out there that can come close? I know there is backup software that comes with some external hard drives, but I think they just save your files and not your settings.
I have 2 WinPCs and a Mac and I am searching for a solution that will enable me to set up a wireless backup for all the 3.
So I am considering buying the large Time Capsule (1TB) if and only if I can use it as a backup drive for my WinPCs too. Do you know if this is possible or even better, has anyone done it?
I got the blue of death in VMware fusion with windows vista ultimate,I think "Defender" did it, every time I go to the vmware to start windows the blue screen shows up, anyway around this ? I can't do any safe modes or last good configs.

This is after I did a backup of my mac to time machine...is it related and is there a quick fix?
where I can get information about safe temperature ranges on my dad's MBP. Second, I'm currently using a program called smcFanControl to monitor said temperature and to manually change my fan speeds, 'cause the fans don't automatically kick in by themselves and can let the temp go to over 90C. I'm just wondering if that's dangerous and if there's any programs I can get that will automatically change the fan speeds to match the temperature.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI can't define fail as stop spinning, but there will be a buzz-saw, grinding like the blades are hitting something, or a sound that resembles an approaching airplane (this WWII diving airplanes) that will continue to grow. It is audible at around 3000 rpm, and when you tilt the laptop at 45 degrees it seems worse. It's not a healthy sound. To hear it the best, run your fans at 6000 rpm and then slow them down to 2000 rpm. At 2000 rpm the fans continue to be inaudible. Unfortunately, it is this audible/inaudible combo that seems to make the problem more annoying b/c I can clearly hear the contrasts. If it was always there, I might be able to tune it out.
This is not an isolated complaint about the classic mbp, but I've had so many of them over the last few years and all of them eventually exhibit this behavior. Every time I have taken it into Apple (about 3 different classic mbps) they have replaced the fan and said it was faulty. Whether they just wanted to make me happy or not is unknown, but a new fan did seem to help...until a few months later.
Does anyone else running Windows 7 experiencing slower fans? My laptop is getting hotter, which is alarming.
The BIOS with A12 should not have been affected during the change and I have the Dell OEM for Windows 7...drivers work fine, but just in case I'm asking here.
I also got a compatibility error when I tried to install the nvidia driver for my 8400GS with Windows 7 64-bit
I have a 2012 envy 15Â with Win8.1 Update 1Â and a few days ago, i noticed that there was a newer version of my graphics card so I decided to update it.
Â
After the installation, the computer screen became black and I only was able to see the mouse pointer, So i waited for almost half hour and then decided to turn of my computer. I restarted it and it kept seeing a black screen (the windows logo appeared during the boot).
Â
As I couldn't do anything with my computer, I decided to Refresh it in hope that it will return to a good state. During the refreshing the pc restarted but the power light started blinking , like the computer was at Sleep, and when the refresh finished, the screen was good, but the light kept blinking.
Â
I tryed to shutdow the computer but when i turn it on again I didnt ear the Cd rom making the usual noise and the lights where blinking.Â
Â
So i decided to maybe put it in sleep, but when i tried it, the computer screen when black for a few seconds and the pc went  wake immediately, and when i try to put it to sleep again, the Sleep option was gone.
Â
Then I thought that something went wrong with  the refresh , so i clean install windows from a bootale usb drive since the CD wasn't working..
Â
But that didn't work either, and to make things worst all my computer fans stopped working. So now I end up with a pc with a clean win8 install, the power lights keep blinking (both power button and the side light), no ability the sleep the computer, no cd drive and no fans..
it happened two times today, the screen went totally black, the fans stop working and the "sleep lights" turned on and off. Soon after the disc drive made the sound that id usually makes when turning the computer on.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI've had my MBP unibody 17 for almost a year now... it's been heating up for the past couple months (or longer?). I really haven't thought to talk about it until now.
Basically, my fans start to kick it quite often after just regular web browsing. It happens quite often if I start streaming a video or watching youtube. I don't have many apps open either. My laptop is in a cool place on hard surface that doesn't absorb heat easy either. I almost want to by a fan to put under it.
I installed SMC fan control and "fan control" since the beginning. I currently have fan control only.
Is there anything specific I can check that causes the laptop to heat up or if I messed with any "internal" settings by accident to cause it to heat up?
I almost want to think I to think it's something I downloaded or something I screwed up. My brother has the exact same computer and it runs around or under 50 all the time while running more programs than I do at times.
I'm just browsing right now with adium and and chrome running and it's running at 62 degrees.
Anyone use it? My computer runs anywhere from 68 C - 78 C. This includes running Fire Fox. Is this normal?
View 10 Replies View RelatedI was wondering if there are any ways to lower system temperature on MBP? My machine gets hot (particular the left side) even though I am just doing simple tasks like surfing and word processing.

It won't go down unless I turn it off or rev up the fans.
I'm playing a lot of movies online from netflex and others and I keep playing with the fan speeds and was wondering what's the safe temp to stay at I'd like to get a notebook cooler but I'm using one of those notebook rolling tables so theirs no room for one unless they have some kind of fans I could hook on top and have them cool the keyboard down,
I think pushing this to a max i'm going to dry out the heat sink paste in a few months or less, any thoughts on this !
do they sell USB fans for the top of the screen that I could point down to the keyboard?
I am considering purchasing a 256g SSD for my late 2008 MBP. Of course the speed increase is a given, however I have read in numerous reports that SSDs significantly reduce heat.
If I were to replace the HDD with an SSD will heat issues disappear completely or will the MBP still be too hot for a lap due to heat generated by the video card?
a lot of people that owns the white macbook complains that it gets too hot, well the area that gets hot is the gpu and the cpu heatsink.
well i decided to open that baby up and change the thermal compound. from just using it for the past hour it seems to still heat up but at a slower rate and the final temp is noticeablly lower, not to mention that it haven't gone through the break-in phase.
unfortunatly i didn't take any pictures and a lot of people have done this so if you really want to, you can search of it online. but i didn't find some information that can help you make the process easier.
taking off the keyboard cover is pretty easy. after removing the screws make sure you keep track of them, this is the hardest part. the right side does not come out that easier, don't be afraid to bend it a little bit. the trick is try to remove the keyboard ribbon right now if you can't get it completely off, then you don't have to worry about using a bit more force, there's really nothing to keep you back...............
i would just like to know how hot the 15 inch macbook pro unibody runs after being under load for a few hours. I will be playing games 3-4 hours straight some nights.
i heard it runs at 70 degrees celsius under load and it stays around there, but if its running that hot:
Is it uncomfortable to use on your lap? will you want to take it off your lap after a few seconds?
Any tips on keeping it cool? i dont understand how a notebook cooler helps that much, as there are no intakes on the bottom of the notebook. And because of that how does keeping the macbook on your bed affect its temps at all? as long as you keep the vents sucking air in and blowing air out clear shouldnt it not matter?
since i installed windows XP on my M1530 i got some serious heat issues with my laptop.
speedfan is indicating idle:
core1: 60°c
core2: 60°C
GPU: 70°C
I Did however install all drivers as described in the manual on the forum. Before format temp were normal.
Is anyone experiencing same things or has suggetions how to solve this?
does everyone use this and if so do you just use it in windows or in or both is it just for gaming does apple approve of it being used ?
