Apple :: Mac Mini - What Size Lcd
Mar 7, 2009
I just ordered the basic Mac Mini tonight. Picked up 4GB of ram from newegg and a 500gb HDD. Shopping for a LCD now.
Is the GPU good enough to power a 26'' monitor? I'd be willing to go to 24'' at the lowest.

Have any of you been able to find any pics of size comparisons between these two nb's?
I tried punching the numbers into sizeasy but I'm not 100% certain that I had the correct dimensions, would be great to see an actual photo.

I tried a search and couldn't find the answer. Does anybody know why the size of the mini screen changed from 10.2 to 10.1, the resolution dropped slightly because of that too. I bought one in November with the 10.2 and they are sending a replacement with the 10.1, any reason to just keep the 10.2 and repair it.

Does anyone have the wired full size apple keyboard w/ the numeric pad?
I got it a couple days ago and it definitely takes some getting used to. But that phase is over now and I love this keyboard. The build quality is amazing and typing feels just like my MBP keyboard.

I am going to get a SSD and I wanted the 80GB from intel, but Kingstons 64GB can be had for 140ish
I would use it for only apps and the OS
I could get a portable hard drive or flash drive (32GB+) for Media..
Would this be a good decision or should I just get the 80, or should I save more and get a 100GB+ SSD?

I have already figured out what i want on my 17'' macbook pro I'm going to buy except about the storage drives. I work with huge databases and after seeing the improvement other people I know have had after switching to ssd drives, (people who are running the same program(s) I do), I have decided that is what I need. But I really need help figuring out what size ssd I need to get, and whether to do something goofy like remove optical drive & replace with ssd or plug ssd in to expresscard slot(if even possible?)
details below:
I will be running windows via bootcamp, as the programs I mainly use only work on windows. I was looking at the 128gb ssd, and the 256gb ssd. I am not sure if 128gb is enough though. When I'm not working in windows I figured i could use the mac os for basic web stuff etc. and I would like to learn to use some of the mac music making programs for fun eventually, but I don't think I'd need much space for that(right?). I'm not a huge gamer, but i would also like room to throw a couple games on my pc, i mean mbp to play once in a while, and figure 2-3 games is going to take up around 20gb at least. I need my music, that's going to be like 10gb probably. And then I also need some room for some random movies and videos that I like to play in the background sometimes while I'm working. I figure that's prob around 20gb. So would 128gb drive be enough or should I go for the 256? It's a huge cost increase, but I figure, it's already costing me around 2700, so an extra 600 is worth it for being able to use it the way I want to, and I would just consider it an extra business expense. I read that windows 7 takes up around 30gb and could not find out how much space mac os takes up, so I would really like to hear from ppl with experience here.....

I am pretty new at this partitioning thing and only plan on putting windows on for gaming....I will only be putting games Empire, Medivial 2, Rome, Total War and Age of Empire III on it along with a virus scan for potential online problems with online gaming w/ these titles.
How much HD space should I dedicate to windows with this being the direction I am taking?
I have just bought the Macbook 2.0 Aluminum w/ 4GB upgrade

I don't really get why no other companies out there tried to beat the size and weight set by macbook air. I know many sacrifices were made when macbook air was designed 2 years ago, but I thought years later companies would have designed notebooks/netbooks of similar or smaller size without making too much sacrifice. what is the reason no one tries to beat this? all the notebooks out there are still at least 1 inch.

Seems there's some sort of odd issue with only some apps running under SL where they don't retain any sort of settings as far as where the window was.
Preview, for example, always opens in the same not-actually-"maximized" position no matter what I do to it. I open a lot of PDF files, so I'd like to be able to specify how they open. (A plus would also be to auto-select the annotate -> comment function).

I saw this over on MacRumors and am more interested in them lettting OS X send sound out of the mini display port than the actual HDMI on the Mac Mini. If what I have read over the last few months is true, OS X is the only thing stopping sound from going out of the mini display port (granted you are using a monoprice HDMI adaptor already).

if this keyboard supports BT 2.1? there is no tech specs on apple's website.
I get repeated keys and there is a firmware update that should take care of that.
also I had to pair it every 2-3 days because when I come back from hibernation or sleep it always have problems connecting. does the light blink when batteries are low?
I saw this software update, [url]
what does it add, and is it for this keyboard? all the keyboards in the download section have the same picture but there are d/l updates from 2006 when this keyboard wasn't even around.

Everything works great with the adapter except for one thing. Once I wake the Macbook up from sleep, the TV doesn't detect it and stays "asleep". I would have to unplug and replug the wire. I've also notice that sometimes my TV would be full screen, sometimes it would have a black bar on the left and right side.

I have seen adaptors that allow me to output via HDMI.
Obviously HDMI carries audio as well as video - but will my MacBook output both audio and video through the mini display port?

I bought a miniDisplay Port to HDMI and 3 HDMI Cables and a HDMI splitter from seller mambate on eBay. Surprisingly it was all really good quality, the audio works well, I wish I had a surround sound system to test it on but I use optical audio for HT. So my Hanns G 28 Monitor is really the only thing I could test it on, and it works.
The Splitter comes wit a remote too which I thought was cool.
This is my MBP13 and he Hanns G
Funny side note, the MBP quicktime plays better 1080p vids on the HannsG dont know why. either way plex is the best program for videos.

I have a 13.3" MBP and a HP LP3065 monitor. At times, I would like to use the monitor for more real estate. I know there is the Apple mini display port to dual-link dvi adapter. Are there any other options that I will be able to use my monitor at 2560x1600 resolution with the MBP?
The reviews for the apple adapter suck and basically all of them have flickering issues. I would hate to buy it, return it, and waste my time on something I know that has a great chance of failure.
I also have Logitech Z-5500 speakers that I would like to use with my Macbook. Would a toslink to mini-toslink cable work?

Taking the Mini apart is very easy. Slide the putty knife, as others describe, into either side of the Mini, and just bend outward. That process takes under 30 seconds, and don't be afraid to make little scratches on the white plastic underneath. It WILL happen a little bit, but it's so minor that nobody will notice, and... well.... it's underneath! So who cares?
Here was my model Mini with 1GB, out of the box, with only 128MB Geforce 9400m available.
Taking it apart is VERY easy. Just remove the lid as described above, remove the 3 antennas from their clips (NOT from the motherboard). That takes about 5 seconds. Then unscrew the 4 screws in the corners of the system, taking special note of their original location! Then all you need to do is prop up the DVD drive and get your hand in there and remove the single DIMM. I was pleasantly surprised to see a 1GB DIMM in there already, not 2x 512MB, so for those wanting to upgrade to 2GB and not 4GB DDR3, you just need one stick of 1GB! Nice one, Apple! (I, of course, assume that ALL 1GB Minis come like this...)..........................

I'm trying to figure out the difference between the two other than the casing (one's metal and one's plastic). The 2140 uses a SATA connector vs a PATA connector. So for $25 extra(lowest config 2140 vs highest config 1000) you get a metal case and SATA connector?
Why would anyone buy the 1000? Am I missing something? Oh and the 2140 has a higher volatage adapter for 'fast charging'...what's left for the 1000?

For anyone waiting to buy a Mini 9 or Mini 12, the price of the Mini 9 is now $299 and the Mini 12 is $399.
I think this is going to make the Mini 12 a much better offering for those that might need a little bit more screen and hard drive.

The studio 1555 I purchased this month was advertised as having a 320Gig HDD, my invoice says that the laptop included a 320Gig HDD, but the C: drive only advertises that it is 283Gig.
My quesion is, where has 37Gig gone? Has anyone else noticed the same thing? Is it just an odd way Dell have set up the initial partitions and if I were to do a complete format and reinstall I would be able to see, and use, 320Gig?

Has anyone any experience with these ExpressCards that modern laptops seem blighted with?
For my Aspire 2920, I've purchased a 34mm adapter to provide firewire sockets. It fits the 34/54 socket and sort of works, although I need to look at some software problems.
This is where the trouble starts. The card plugs into the wider slot, but then I attach a full-size firewire connector and its heavyish cable to the card. The card can rock sideways because, being a 34 mm card in a 54mm wide opening, there can be 20 mm of sideways movement at the front while the back is held by the internal connector. Plugging and unplugging the firewire connector wobbles the card in the slot and it is obviously connecting and disconnecting rapidly without going through the software remove process.
The whole mechanical arrangement seems hopeless. The card isn't secure and there is no button to unlock and remove the card like on the old pcmcia slots. I suppose I could carve a 20mm piece of something to wedge the card into place, but maybe someone here knows how it should be done.
Surely the ExpressCard system can't be designed to be as bad as this?
