Apple :: Defective Intel SSD

Sep 25, 2009

Ordered a 160GB G2R5 SSD to replace the 500GB 5400rpm drive in my 15" MBP and received the drive yesterday. Opened up the MBP, removed the 500GB and put in the 160GB Intel SSD. The SL installation started fine, I used the disk utility and formatted the drive (MacOS extended (journaled)) and the installation began...

When the bar was almost at the end (said 10 min remaining), a big yellow exclamation point icon appeared on the screen and said "OS installation encountered an error, please contact the software manufacturer (something along these lines)". I was surprised of course...

I re-started the machine, initiated the SL installation again, started disk utility and it took about 10 minutes (spinning beach ball) to detect the Intel drive. Once it did, I formatted it again and initiated the installation. This time, the installer quit a lot earlier (about 25% in) with the same message.

Thinking that this could be a SL related issue, I popped in the Leopard DVD and started Disk Utility. The drive was detected immediately, but it showed up as "8MB Intel SSD". I tried formatting, etc, but it never reverted back from that 8MB stage. It was detected as an 8MB drive with the SL installation DVD as well....

Apple :: Defective 13" MBP Display

Jun 20, 2009

Quote:

I had a similar issue with my new 13 MBP. The screen appeared yellowish, almist unsaturated colors and lower in contrast. I had a 9C9E screen version. Compared to the white macbook and imac that I have, the screen was brilliant, but something off with the colors. So I made a genius bar appointment. The "genius" told me that LCD's are all different and there is variation amongst them (i believe that is acceptable to a degree).

Apple products however are highly QC'ed. So this guy tried to sell me a 129.99 dollar calibrator to fix my problem. I kindly took him to 2 floor model pieces, and compared them to my MBP. And mine was the only one different. I was promptly given a replacement MBP, no questions asked. Now I have a 9C9F version and it is PERFECT!. I can truly make out the increased contrast, increased gamut of colors compared to my older macs.
So if you guys have issues go to the apple store. Don't let a genius make a fool out of you by selling you some more hardware.

I did try to calibrate the screen before I took it in with Super Cal... just something seemed off.

Exact same problem as this fellow here. My 9C9E seems extremely orange/yellow warm, and the colors are definitely not as saturated as I was expecting when comparing to my calibrated 24" panel......

Apple :: Defective Magsafe Adapter

May 21, 2010

a lot of times when i let the magsafe get magnetically attracted to the port, it aligns crookedly (the side-butt round part of it sticking up a little bit) and I gotta push my thumb down to align it in place, flush with the machine edge. I can also do this and it will land straight but not if I'm being sloppy and careless with the magnetic attraction -- more so than the other 3 unibody MacBook Pro's I've had with the same macbook air charger). Do you think the cable is defective, it stills seems to be doing it with my computer. Tried it on my buddy's classic MacBook Pro (the magsafe adapter) and it does the same thing. Also, tried the classic adapter on mine and it has the same fit as on his. So I don't think it's my port, I think the cable is either defective or just more strongly magnetized and needs to be corrected with a push or something.

Apple :: Defective NVIDIA 8600 GTMacBook Pro 2.2 GHz

Feb 22, 2010

Just got my refund from Apple after I spoke to them regarding the NVIDIA 8600 GT issue that has recently plagued my notebook. (It originally wouldn't boot, no chime - nothing.

So the Apple Store charged me $310.00 for the flat rate repair job. Got the notebook a few days later and found the phrase "Replaced - Graphics Processor Issue on MLB". Called them back, they opened up an investigation and issued my refund a week later.)

Anyhow, a few days after the repair, I noticed that my MacBook's fans started making a grinding sound. Granted, it was before the video card failure (and I had hoped they would fix it) but the noise seems to be more apparent after I got it back. Seems like the issue had manifested to both fans. Plus, my video card seems to be running hotter than usual.

I'm getting 74° C just by browsing the web. I did some research and I guess this is somewhat normal for the video card, but it doesn't seem real encouraging. I also notice a faint smell coming from the ventilation gap on the back of the computer. I don't want to say it's the smell of burning plastic, but it's somewhere around that range. Not sure how to describe it.

Apple :: 2.93 GHZ Intel Core 2 Duo

Jan 23, 2009

I realized while browsing through Apple's site that they are offering the new 17" with this processor, yet I don't see it listed on Intel's site.

What are the differences of the 2.93 Ghz in the 17" and the 2.8 Ghz found in the 15"?

To anybody's knowledge do they have plans of updating the 15" to accomodate the 2.93 Ghz?

Any signs I should look for indicating a bad drive?

Apple :: Basic MBP With Intel X25-m Or Level 2 MBP

Feb 2, 2009

I am thinking of getting the 8600 MBP with 2gb, the basic hard drive, etc. Then replacing the hard drive with the 80gb intel x25-m and selling the the original. This would come out to a few dollars more than the 2.53gb macbook with 4gb and the 320gb hard drive.

I don't need a lot of space because i have multiple terabytes of external media collection hard drives.

Doesn't the 2.4 consume less watts than the 2.53 as well? This would be better for battery life, which I care about.

Apple :: Will Ditch NVIDIA For Intel Graphics

May 27, 2009

I'm planning on making the switch to a Mac but I don't need a new notebook till Q3 09/Q1 2010. I know the next major hardware refresh is coming soon and I want a Macbook to last through uni but I don't know Apples sales strategies.

My main concern is the integrated graphics that the MB may come with when it is refreshed. What I wanted to ask is if anyone knows the likelihood that Apple will drop NVIDIA and go back to Intel.

Because if that was to be the case, I might as well buy one now (or once SL is released) because i'd rather have a Centrino 2 based MB w/ NVIDIAs iGPU then go back to Intel (harsh, i know... but it's the truth).
Even with all the benefits the Calpella chipset/Westmere CPU would bring i.e. USB 3.0, SATA-III, Bluetooth 3.0, native SSD support, removal of FSB, integrated memory controller, DDR3-1600, improved wireless tech (w/ finalized 802.11n spec), lower power consumption, 32nm Nehalem.

Man I wish Apple would stick with NVIDIA for their next platform. NVIDIA has greater compatibility than anyone else and I know for a fact that the integrated graphics that will come with Arrandale are just a higher clocked 4500MHD so it will still be a lot weaker then even todays Macbook offering (9400m) which is like taking two steps back.
Would be frickin AWESOME if we could get Calpella with a variant of Arrandale without its integrated graphics core. Instead, couple it with a 40/32nm shrink of the current 9400m based on the G300 architecture.............

Apple :: How Will AMD And Intel Legal Battle Effect

Mar 17, 2009

Intel has issued a notification to AMD stating that their x86 license expires in 60 days. That itself isn't news to Apple seeing as they don't use any AMD x86 CPU or AMD anything really. Where it gets a tad interesting is the fact that AMD owns the x64 extension to x86 (Intel/ EMT64 is a licensed version of AMD64) . If I am not mistaken Snow Leopard is supposed to be native 64 bit of course running on Intel CPU's. If Intel goes through with their threat and AMD plays the same card with x64 could we see Intel with the capacity to only produce 32-bit CPU and AMD completely out of the market until the legal squabble is settled in court?

Correct me anywhere I am wrong but I think Apple has a very big stake in this upcoming legal battle.

HP/Compaq :: HP Laptop + No Defective GPU- Exsist

So what are my choices HP wise? no ATI (which im not a fan of, but at this point 'll try anything). Im not a huge gamer but like to load up FarCry 2 and other games every once in a while with medium settings. I also do a lot of 2d photoshop work and some CAD work. HP/Compaq :: HP DV6700t Notebook With Defective MotherboardHP Won't Fix

Apr 15, 2009

I bought an HP laptop for 1300 dollars a year and 3 months ago. The laptop's manufacturer warranty expired in January. So in the beginning of April my laptop died for no reason. I took it to the local Geek Squad in Jensen Beach, FL, and they reluctantly told me it was the motherboard. Now I didn't purchase the extended warranty from HP, but since the laptop is barely a year old and it just died out of nowhere, I've called HP to see if they would help me out. This is the second HP laptop which motherboard has died this year for me. My mother's laptop's motherboard died in February and they swapped hers out for free. Apparently her model qualified for a free motherboard but mine didn’t.

I've been arguing with countless customer service people, being transferred all around, getting promised to be contacted and never contacted. I've escalated my problem twice now with HP to hear from case managers and I've yet to hear from them despite their promises.

I've got the invoice from the Geek Squad to prove that it was a defective motherboard. I saw another person at the Geek Squad TODAY while picking up my laptop with the same exact problem, with an HP laptop! Why should people pay 300 dollars to make sure their laptops last more than one year? They may not be obligated to fix these problems by law but it'd be the right thing to do seeing as how it was their fault. In today’s economy I can't afford 500 dollars to fix everything when HP initially put a bad motherboard in my laptop in the first place!

And to top it all off, my hard drive ALSO fried -because- my motherboard had fried!

Dell :: M1730: Lower Quality Or Defective LCD Panel?

May 21, 2010

I purchased a Dell M1730 laptop a couple of years ago. A few months after I received it, the original LCD panel was shattered in an accident.

I shipped it back to Dell and they replaced it with a new Samsung panel (not sure what it had before) which looked just as good, except that after a couple of months it developed a one pixel wide red vertical line 80% of the way up from the bottom of the screen near the left side.

Because the line wasn't very distracting (only showed up on certain colors like dark grey and dark red) I lived with it for a while, but I recently decided I should get it fixed since my warranty is running out this year.

I emailed Dell recently and they sent a technician to my house while I was at work (my wife was at home) and he repaired the M1730 so that the red vertical line was no longer present.

I'm not sure what the exact nature of the repairs were, but he did mention to my wife that apparently when my panel was previously replaced, they had only used 2 of 8 screws .....

Dell :: Charged Restocking Fee On Returned 1537 That Was Defective

Feb 10, 2009

I've discussed this machine in other threads, but it wasn't until now that I found out that a restocking fee was charged.

The machine in question had problems with a wavy keyboard and an eject button that would stay lit, then go off and eject a disc at random. This happened multiple times. I also had a problem at boot up, where the machine made a ringing noise for over one minute, then booted up. Given these problems, I called Dell to return the machine after having it for two days.

The machine was a "Previously Ordered New" Inspiron 1537 from the outlet. I think it's not too much to ask that it be free of defects out of the box. If there are multiple problems, then one should be able to return it within 21 days for a full refund.

If you find yourself in a similar situation, my advice would be to make sure someone in Tech Support logs in the system the problems you are having. I didn't realize that this was necessary .....
