Acer :: Is My New Aspire 4741G Defective
May 16, 2010
While the screen is nice and bright, all colors seem to have a very slight tint of yellow to them. I realize I can fix this with Nvidia Control Panel, but is the abnormal yellowish tint indicative of a defective backlight? I'm afraid I can't even return the darn thing because I already registered it online.

I am getting service on my xps m1530 to get my 8600m gt replaced... I have heard about all of the issues nvidia is having with these and am wondering if I am going to get another bad one that will have to be replaced again or will get one that is fixed?

I'd like to know if anyone sent their notebook in for repair because of the defective Nvidia GPU problem? What was your experience, how many repairs, did Dell replace the defective parts with the same and did anyone get a replacement?
I've got the Vostro 1400 and I'm headed down that road. Would like to hear how it went for anyone with any of the other affected models also.

I'm from Singapore and this is my first post in this forum. =]
I own a m1330 with an 8400M GS. I've heard a alot about the defective GPU with all the vertical lines and crashed and whatnot. I've had my fair share of BSOD too.
I've also heard that this problem only affect those laptops shipped to the states, and I'm from Singapore, so am I spared from this nightmare?

Ordered a 160GB G2R5 SSD to replace the 500GB 5400rpm drive in my 15" MBP and received the drive yesterday. Opened up the MBP, removed the 500GB and put in the 160GB Intel SSD. The SL installation started fine, I used the disk utility and formatted the drive (MacOS extended (journaled)) and the installation began...
When the bar was almost at the end (said 10 min remaining), a big yellow exclamation point icon appeared on the screen and said "OS installation encountered an error, please contact the software manufacturer (something along these lines)". I was surprised of course...
I re-started the machine, initiated the SL installation again, started disk utility and it took about 10 minutes (spinning beach ball) to detect the Intel drive. Once it did, I formatted it again and initiated the installation. This time, the installer quit a lot earlier (about 25% in) with the same message.
Thinking that this could be a SL related issue, I popped in the Leopard DVD and started Disk Utility. The drive was detected immediately, but it showed up as "8MB Intel SSD". I tried formatting, etc, but it never reverted back from that 8MB stage. It was detected as an 8MB drive with the SL installation DVD as well....

i just had my motherboard replace coz not getting any display and the tech support was trying to convince me that is not the issue with the 8600gt on my m1530 cuz im not getting any vertical lines.
furthermore, they told me (which i called 2 other tech rep to confirm this, which added up total of 3) that dell has asked dell to make them new non-defective 3d card on new material

I ordered a xps 1340, recieved it today, after working with tech support deemed the slot load rom drive is dead.
I did not get on site service when i was ordering, that said I absolutely offended by and refuse to follow their process to resolve this.
That being me shipping a laptop i have had less than 2 hours back to dell for them to hopefully fix the issue and then wait for the shipment back.

I'm considering purchasing a Lattitude E6400 with the Nvidia 160M card, but I've read about Nvidia's problems with mobile chip failures cause of bad bump materials.
Does anyone know if the problem is fixed for the 160M or are those cards prone to failure as well?

Here's what my laptop does.
It doesn't play DVDs. I try 10 times and then it successfully plays a DVD, but the first few tries it freezes up after 1 preview.
It makes a clicking noise on the inside at any given time during use. It makes me think it's sitting at a bad angle, so I move it around. I don't think that's the problem; I sit it flat

I know not every nvidia unit is going to fail, but my previous v300 compaq did, and the replacement dv2700TSE I got is starting to do the same thing almost 6 months later. I was looking at the new SE and it has the 9200gm which I believe is on the list of possibly defective gpu's correct?
So what are my choices HP wise? no ATI (which im not a fan of, but at this point 'll try anything). Im not a huge gamer but like to load up FarCry 2 and other games every once in a while with medium settings. I also do a lot of 2d photoshop work and some CAD work. Id like to stick to the 14.1 size but doesn't look that will be an option.

I had a similar issue with my new 13 MBP. The screen appeared yellowish, almist unsaturated colors and lower in contrast. I had a 9C9E screen version. Compared to the white macbook and imac that I have, the screen was brilliant, but something off with the colors. So I made a genius bar appointment. The "genius" told me that LCD's are all different and there is variation amongst them (i believe that is acceptable to a degree).
Apple products however are highly QC'ed. So this guy tried to sell me a 129.99 dollar calibrator to fix my problem. I kindly took him to 2 floor model pieces, and compared them to my MBP. And mine was the only one different. I was promptly given a replacement MBP, no questions asked. Now I have a 9C9F version and it is PERFECT!. I can truly make out the increased contrast, increased gamut of colors compared to my older macs.
So if you guys have issues go to the apple store. Don't let a genius make a fool out of you by selling you some more hardware.
I did try to calibrate the screen before I took it in with Super Cal... just something seemed off.

Exact same problem as this fellow here. My 9C9E seems extremely orange/yellow warm, and the colors are definitely not as saturated as I was expecting when comparing to my calibrated 24" panel......

a lot of times when i let the magsafe get magnetically attracted to the port, it aligns crookedly (the side-butt round part of it sticking up a little bit) and I gotta push my thumb down to align it in place, flush with the machine edge. I can also do this and it will land straight but not if I'm being sloppy and careless with the magnetic attraction -- more so than the other 3 unibody MacBook Pro's I've had with the same macbook air charger). Do you think the cable is defective, it stills seems to be doing it with my computer. Tried it on my buddy's classic MacBook Pro (the magsafe adapter) and it does the same thing. Also, tried the classic adapter on mine and it has the same fit as on his. So I don't think it's my port, I think the cable is either defective or just more strongly magnetized and needs to be corrected with a push or something.

I bought an HP laptop for 1300 dollars a year and 3 months ago. The laptop's manufacturer warranty expired in January. So in the beginning of April my laptop died for no reason. I took it to the local Geek Squad in Jensen Beach, FL, and they reluctantly told me it was the motherboard. Now I didn't purchase the extended warranty from HP, but since the laptop is barely a year old and it just died out of nowhere, I've called HP to see if they would help me out. This is the second HP laptop which motherboard has died this year for me. My mother's laptop's motherboard died in February and they swapped hers out for free. Apparently her model qualified for a free motherboard but mine didn’t.
I've been arguing with countless customer service people, being transferred all around, getting promised to be contacted and never contacted. I've escalated my problem twice now with HP to hear from case managers and I've yet to hear from them despite their promises.
I've got the invoice from the Geek Squad to prove that it was a defective motherboard. I saw another person at the Geek Squad TODAY while picking up my laptop with the same exact problem, with an HP laptop! Why should people pay 300 dollars to make sure their laptops last more than one year? They may not be obligated to fix these problems by law but it'd be the right thing to do seeing as how it was their fault. In today’s economy I can't afford 500 dollars to fix everything when HP initially put a bad motherboard in my laptop in the first place!
And to top it all off, my hard drive ALSO fried -because- my motherboard had fried!

Just got my refund from Apple after I spoke to them regarding the NVIDIA 8600 GT issue that has recently plagued my notebook. (It originally wouldn't boot, no chime - nothing.
So the Apple Store charged me $310.00 for the flat rate repair job. Got the notebook a few days later and found the phrase "Replaced - Graphics Processor Issue on MLB". Called them back, they opened up an investigation and issued my refund a week later.)
Anyhow, a few days after the repair, I noticed that my MacBook's fans started making a grinding sound. Granted, it was before the video card failure (and I had hoped they would fix it) but the noise seems to be more apparent after I got it back. Seems like the issue had manifested to both fans. Plus, my video card seems to be running hotter than usual.
I'm getting 74° C just by browsing the web. I did some research and I guess this is somewhat normal for the video card, but it doesn't seem real encouraging. I also notice a faint smell coming from the ventilation gap on the back of the computer. I don't want to say it's the smell of burning plastic, but it's somewhere around that range. Not sure how to describe it.

I purchased a Dell M1730 laptop a couple of years ago. A few months after I received it, the original LCD panel was shattered in an accident.
I shipped it back to Dell and they replaced it with a new Samsung panel (not sure what it had before) which looked just as good, except that after a couple of months it developed a one pixel wide red vertical line 80% of the way up from the bottom of the screen near the left side.
Because the line wasn't very distracting (only showed up on certain colors like dark grey and dark red) I lived with it for a while, but I recently decided I should get it fixed since my warranty is running out this year.
I emailed Dell recently and they sent a technician to my house while I was at work (my wife was at home) and he repaired the M1730 so that the red vertical line was no longer present.
I'm not sure what the exact nature of the repairs were, but he did mention to my wife that apparently when my panel was previously replaced, they had only used 2 of 8 screws .....

I've discussed this machine in other threads, but it wasn't until now that I found out that a restocking fee was charged.
The machine in question had problems with a wavy keyboard and an eject button that would stay lit, then go off and eject a disc at random. This happened multiple times. I also had a problem at boot up, where the machine made a ringing noise for over one minute, then booted up. Given these problems, I called Dell to return the machine after having it for two days.
The machine was a "Previously Ordered New" Inspiron 1537 from the outlet. I think it's not too much to ask that it be free of defects out of the box. If there are multiple problems, then one should be able to return it within 21 days for a full refund.
If you find yourself in a similar situation, my advice would be to make sure someone in Tech Support logs in the system the problems you are having. I didn't realize that this was necessary .....

Nvidia apparently has a solution to the problems faced by many in their notebooks powered by GeForce 8M series, that is, to encourage the OEM/ODMs to buy their new problem free chips. Of course, this doesn't solve the issues faced by current users and there won't be any replacement for them.
Nvidia has come out with a new GPU called NB8E-SET which is essentially NB8E-SE with the new underfill. NB8E-SE is used on many notebooks most commonly advertised as GeForce 8700M GT, GeForce 8800M GS or GeForce 9650M GS. NB8E-SET (G84-751) uses the new Hitachi underfill and is clocked at 625MHz core and 128-bit 800MHz GDDR2/3 memories similar to the current NB8E-SE.
Here's a note from Nvidia to their partners :
NVIDIA is committed to providing our customers with quality products that push the edge of technology and also continuously improve product quality and reliability. To help improve the product quality and ensure smooth and uninterrupted product supply during the current “end stage” of life cycle, NVIDIA strongly recommends that customers transition to this latest revision of the NB8E-SET GPUs as soon as possible. These latest revision units utilize “Hitachi” underfill packaging material that improves product quality and enhances operating life by improved thermal cycling reliability.

I received my Studio XPS 1640 laptop in July. I didn't open it and wanted to send it back because when I had submitted my order, literally new options for upgrades appeared. I called Dell and the lady I spoke with offered me credit for keeping the laptop, I declined and said I want to reurn it so she said a restocking fee of $343 would apply. I quickly said nevermind.
Later I called back after I OPENED the box and took the laptop out and it was defective, even my friend confirmed it. I spent like $2,700 on the laptop. The next person in the returns department didn't mention any restocking fee, understood I had a defective computer and sent me a returns label. Next day came, and the label didn't come as he said it was. Called back and told the lady in returns that I didn't get the label and she said "I will resend it" and she did. Then the label appreared in my inbox and all was set...at least I thought
I checked my Dell account on Dell.com today and noticed a "new" order being processed in the amount of $343 and the description stated it was a restocking fee charge! I quicky called Dell and the lady I spoke with said I was told I going to be charged a restocking fee, I corrected her and told her my defective computer was never mentioned to have a restocking fee attached. She checked her records and the only thing she would say is that "the restocking fee is non-refundable, I do apologize". Yeah right! I kept telling her what was said to me and I also told her that according to Dell, brand new defective computers DO NOT get charged a restocking fee. She kept saying "the restocking fee is non-refundable, I do apologize". I asked for a manager/supervisor, and she said she would do it but I would get the same answer, to which I DID get the same answer. I hung up!

Yesterday, after just a month of ownership, the display panel on my ThinkPad Yoga S1 became defective. All of a sudden, when I undocked it (after shutting down normally), the only thing that appeared on the display was a whitish image containing a dark grey vertical band (left), which happens to be the Lenovo splash screen background! The laptop runs perfectly fine when docked because it attaches to an external monitor. I tried fiddling with the Yoga's display panel, rotating through its various configurations and, after a while, a partial windows screen did appear although it flickered and, even still, nothing displayed properly in that left most vertical strip! Undocked, the laptop was and is completely unusable...

I'm planning on getting either both of these computers, Aspire AS5538-1096 or Aspire Timeline 5810-4784. Everything else is understandable except the part of the processor.
The Aspire as5538 comes with an AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-core Processor L310 1.2GHz, 1 MB L2 cache. While the Aspire Timeline comes with an Intel Pentium Processor DU4199 1.3GHz, 2MB L2 cache. I mean, are intel making pentiums with dual core? Can it beat the Athlon 64 x2 1.2 dual core? Even if it costs more with the Aspire Timeline?
Here are links I found with some detailed information about these two products:
Aspire A5538-1096

Aspire Timeline 5810-4784

My main concern is, dual core, portability, and solid design. In better words, which is the best one?

Seeing as I pretty much made up my mind and want to buy a Acer Aspire 8930G, I hope somebody here can give me some specific advice. Maybe someone who owns one of the laptops (I hope there aren't any differences, depending on the country you live in)
I am looking at the Acer Aspire 8930G-644G32MN or the ACER Aspire 8930G-584G32BN. The first one is 300 Euro's cheaper than the last one. Besides that big difference I can't seem to find any. Did I miss some specific diffence, like do they both have Surround Sound and a BluRay drive and a full HD screen? Does any of the two support DVB-T? Do they both have a 9600 GT graphics card?
The reason why I ask is because I looked through, I don't know how many internetsites with specs and it's amazing how they all differ, obviously mainly copied and pasted from other internetsites. And I really want to get the right one and not regret my purchase after a while.

I got a problem with my Acer Aspire 5315. The HDD is shown in the bios but won't show in Vista most of the time. The HDD is completely formated, including the Acer partition. So recovery is not an option.
The problem is strange because it is not consistent. Sometimes I am able to acces the drive and install Vista. But then the next day, when i try to boot again, i only see a cursor after the Acer boot screen.
I've tried running in IDE mode. I also tried replacing the HDD with a new one. I installed vista with the correct Intel driver.
I also tried running Linux live cd. It also sees the HDD drive correctly but when i try to acces it, the program freeses.
I'm affraid something is wrong with the I/O controller, or it is a loose cable.
If you think otherwise, please let me know. If not, i'd like to know how I can check the HDD cable.
